A quick look at the new Geshelli Labs J3 Pro DAC. Full review soon.
A quick look at the the Geshelli Labs new J3 Pro DAC. The new unit has directly addressable inputs, new internal and external power supplies, a new SMT Oscillator for better accuracy and a relay switched USB board. I am very excited to dig into this unit during the review.

Is this be the best Amp I have heard? My review of the Orchard Audio Starkrimson Ultra DMC 2.0 Amp

Thanks to Leo Ayzenshtat of Orchard Audio for loaning me this amp for review. Not only is the Starkrimson Ultra (500W) DMC 2.5 the best Class D amp I have ever heard, it is one of the best amps I have ever heard full stop. It is remarkable in its clarity and power. It has no sonic sins. It is 100% faithful to the source. At $3999.00 plus $250.00 for the single ended to balanced option, this is,...

    Yes, Yes, Energy made Fantastic Speakers and I wonder where they went. I had the last Top Energy Sound Bar...it was fabulous with one caviate. It wasn't the sound it was the Postage Stamp Remote and it was the only way to open up the sound field from movie to music. It as opposed to all those that came after played music exceptionally with a wide deep sound stage. And I got it and the sub for just over a C note. I should have kept it because what I "supposedly traded up for does not play music well. I have heard that most SB's made after and up till recently don't play music well. I have heard some now do. I can't say. I'm going back to 2 Channel.

      Energy was purchased by Klipsch (Voxx Int'l) and as they do with any brand that can threaten the all holy Klipsch brand the bought it to kill it off. Which is what they do. Look at the brands they own and tell me which could hurt Klipsch, Pioneer, Onkyo, Accustic Research, RCA, Jensen, Magnat, Heco, Energy and Jamo which is the only one that has any real presence. Jamo used to be a high end brand. Now it is an Amazon throw away.

      I am still trying to figure out the op-amp situation. That said I put the big 2590 op-amp in the J2S on single ended and it fit and sounded great. If you are only using single ended outputs just go with the J2S and upgrade the op-amp later. In truth the differences, to me, between the 3602 and the 2590 are very subtle at best. The DAC boards are almost identical with some minor changes to fit the op-amps. The party piece for me on these DAC is the 4499 chip set. That's where the magic lives. I hope that helps.

    I would be very interested in your opinion about diminishing return / value for the increased price points in the Geshelli line. You can get the "classic" ESS9026 or AKM 4493 for around $250 (aluminum sans USB), or upgrade to the mid tier (that you have) J2S with Sparkos for $500-670 depending on number of opamps, and finally $780 for the J3 Pro. So call it $250 vs $500 vs $800 (approx $300-ish jumps to simplify). What level of performance / value do you see between them? Of course we all want the best ;) P.S. What wood did you choose - it looks beautiful.

    • @OldGuyHifi
      @OldGuyHifi 2 дні тому

      I can say with a level of confidence, that for the given price point the standard J2 is very good compared to comparable priced units from Topping, SMSL, etc. Now, just so you know, I am not the biggest fan of common Delta-Sigma chip implementations. For years my reference DAC has been a Schiit Bi-Frost Multi-bit unit that has been modified. I started to get an inkling that the new AKM 4499EX/4191 chip set was different with the J2S I have in. I have not finished my reviews yet so, my conclusions are very preliminary. I do hear a positive difference between the J2S and the J3 Pro. I think the differences between DACs that cost from $100 to $1000 can be far more significant and noticeable then the difference between DACs that cost from $1000 to $3000. Usually on the expensive units it is the output stage i.e., tube output or similar that makes the difference not the decoding methodology. Unless you have deep pockets or have a huge investment in your Hifi, I would council against spending much for than $1000.00 for a DAC. Wow! Did I just write "War & Peace?" Sorry. Great question. Thanks for seeking my opinion. Something I am not shy about sharing! BTW, Geshelli just sent me the unit for review. They choose the wood.

    • @dylanemeraldgrey
      @dylanemeraldgrey 2 дні тому

      I have had the same question. Have seen a couple positive reviews now of SMSL's DO200 Pro as a contender in that range, if it drops in price significantly this month, I'll probably give it a shot. Though I do like the idea of supporting the Geschelli family. So, so, so many choices...

    • @OldGuyHifi

    • @OldGuyHifi
      @OldGuyHifi 2 дні тому

      Personally, I use magic. I have both the J2S and J3 side by side and as they use fundamentally the same chip set and layout I can compare the op-amps easily from my recliner not a couch! Lol. Seriously, I make extensive notes on the sound I am hearing and honestly, I have been doing this for so long my ears are kind of trained to hear differences and I have been listening in the exact same room for 30+ years. The bottom line is that if you can't hear a difference then there is no difference but, if you can, and that difference has a value for you then swap away. I also use headphones to try and listen in a bit closer. I do not advocate that anybody spend money on something that they can't hear. Wilson, thanks for sharing your thoughts and coming back to the channel for more.

      @@OldGuyHifi yes, thanks for the feedback! But from the point of view of a guy sitting on his couch wanting to buy this and trying to select the right op amp WITHOUT buying all the chips, this is going to cause buyer hesitation from out of this world for me.

    Just get the su-r1000 amp/DAC, it does not use a chip as long you use the USB on it. It also bypasses op-amps, that is why it is one of the best DACs in the world. But if you use the RCA connections you can definitely hear the chip being used pulling the performance way back.

    Looking forward to your reviews! I especially wish you cover Eversolo used as a streamer with J3 external DAC hooked up via SPDIF and USB as a comparison. I’m about to order the A6 MA edition, hoping for less on prime day July 16/17th. I currently use the Sparkos dual Pro opamp in my aune magic DAC - only one opamp is needed for both SE and BAL outputs. I have not used the ss3602’s since I got the Pro opamp in and I have 3 of them laying around now 😅. I don’t think the pro opamp from Sparkos is very new, I’ve had it for a while now..🤷‍♂️ Also, please mention how the Burson V7 Vivids are in comparison to Sparkos. I’m very satisfied with the Pro opamp from Sparkos, ordered it unassembled without knowing, had to stack and solder it together myself in under half an hour 🙃🤦‍♂️ I subscribed because you explained how important the internal clock of a DAC is, seems that nobody else on YT knows anything about it… Thank you!🙏

      Ivan, Thank you so much for tuning in. I have been listing to the DMP-A6 with the Geshelli J2S AKM 4499 with both the Sparkos SS3602 and the Burson V7 Vivid Pro. I must say I prefer the 3602s but only just. I think they are more neutral and a bit more detailed. I will be honest and tell you I think the J2S w/3602s has a more detailed less bright sound signature that the DMP-6's built in DAC. I was comparing both over balanced and single ended connections. I am not sure I will have the DMP-A6 review done by Prime days. Thank you sharing your system configuration.

    New to your channel. You DAC explanation was very helpful as was your review of class D operation vs A and A/B. Very informative. Where I used to listen to music for lyrics and beat, now I listen for nuances- other buried in background instruments and effects. Frightening how bad my dads Fischer system was back in the ‘70’s. You could barely make out lyrics and the musical production was a “ball” of stuff resonating together. Now- we look for depth, width and location- crazy. But true- and we judge products by their ability to do those things. Lots of rabbit holes to keep an old guy busy for years to come🐇

    • @OldGuyHifi

      I have no experience with that unit but, my guess is probably not. The reason is it uses the TI 3255 amp chip that is found in a great many low cost amps from Fosi, Aiyima and SMSL. It is a good chip but, not on the order of a Hypex NCore or Ice Power amps found in comparably priced units Like the NAD C700 I just reviewed or the Cambridge EVO75. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

    Good review and digestable tech info for the I know enough tech to be dangerous viewer. Your review points of fast and "what you give it is what get out" is in line with other reviews. I am a Maggie guy so always looking for amps that pair nice with them as they are a bit unique. GAN class D is interesting as they are 2 ohm stable and can provide curent without heat, massive size, and can cost less than big class AB amps especially when stepping up for low noise floor. The channel My Own Devices reviewed his Orchard with Maggie 1.6s giving it a thumbs up. However, I was not finding much confirmation of the paring in searches. Thank you for testing the pairing. Peachtree GAN amps with Maggies had mixed reviews which maybe their preamp, power supply, and/or dac or some just prefer Class AB. I'd love to see you review a Peachtree GAN amp on the channel if you get the chance. As an Oregon trail era Gen Xer, I get the anti streaming stance. I have a Bluesound Vault with local storage for ripped CDs. I like owning media, the artist can't be kicked off or decide to leave my platform. They can't replace their tracks with remastered versions. I don't have a monthly fee. I do stream radio stations on TunedIn which are often over the air somewhere. 2 CDs for the stream not on the usual hits list: Elise LeGrow "Playing Chess" the "Who Do you Love?" cover is great. Katie Melua "The House" with tracks "I'd love to kill you" and "Tiny Aliens" being fun to see how a system plays them

      Lamar, I also have an extensive collection of FLAC & DSF files on a HD. I agree with you about all this remastered BS that the labels and artist do. I call those albums "the search for more money edition." I would love to review Peachtree and any other gear. I think once I get to 5K subs it might help. Thanks for the music recommendations, I will them in the rotation now. Thanks so much for watching and commenting and hopefully subscribing.

    Impressive amp for sure. I appreciate that they put the money inside not on the box. I know looks are important but I'd rather have components that matter inside than a pretty faceplate upfront. Plus, if they had done, it would probably be closer to $5k. And as it is just an amp, it can be easy to hide it from view if that bothers you. Don't really have a playlist per se, but I have one track I use a lot to test speakers. It's Seefeel - Plainsong [Sine Bubble Embossed Dub] from 1993. It's a poorly recorded track, lots of noise, (but it's part of its charm) it starts very low and very low volume. It's a track that require you to crank the volume up (and then gradually turn it down as the track volume increase). It will give your woofers a work out (might even help get dust out of old speakers hehe). When the track evolves, it's the twitter that is put to contribution. It's ambient/ experimental with a beat as it is a remix. If it's something you like, I highly encourage you to explore their first album Quique Unfortunately, for most of the options on streaming, they have cleaned the track of the noise and you can also get some artifacts at time (on Spotify). The UA-cam version is decent enough.

      My EVO150 is a Hypex Ncore amp. I do think believe GaNFETs can switch faster and at a higher frequency tahn MOSFETs. I must say I do very much like the EVO and have side by side compared it to the Orchard Audio unit. The OA am is better it almost all regards. It is completely neutral to the source. But the EVO is a better package and solution for my needs. Yes the equipment ahead of the amp does make a big difference. Thanks for the questions.
