A bizarre overview of a long forgotten product: the ZUNE. I thought you might find it interesting.

  • Another strange and unscripted ramble from the Old Guy Hifi. Today's amazing video is about Microsoft ZUNE software, hardware and accessories. WOW! For the masochists among you there is more info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zune. Thank you so much for watching.
    Current audio equipment list:
    Cambridge AXR-100 Receiver 100 WRMS. (“B” stock)
Schiit Bi-Frost 4490 DAC, which has been upgrade with Multi-Bit and Unison USB. (“B” stock)
    Schiit Lokius EQ (“B” stock)
Schiit Mani Phono Pre. (“B” stock)
    Loxjie D-30 DAC
Elac Debut 2.0 F-62 Speakers with minor mods, i.e., I removed the grill over the tweeter and added damping material and “No-Rez” to the cabinet.
Fluance RT-84 turn table. I ditched the Ortofon 2M Blue for the Audio Technica AT540ML. The Ortofon sounded ok but the AT cart is really on another level.
All line level cables are from Worlds Best Cable. I primarily use Mogami 2964 Wire and Amphenol ACPL connectors. I also have a few of the Canare L-4E6S, Star Quad, Audio Interconnect Cables with Amphenol ACPR Gold RCA Connectors. I like them both. I started with Mogami as almost very recording studio and arena size system use that brand.
My speaker wires are from Phoenix Gold. About 35 years ago they used to make/market 10 AWG for 9s cooper speaker cable. It is about ¾” in diameter. I have been using them for that long and love their sound.
Miscellaneous items include a small format PC (Core i5, 8GB of RAM & a 256GB internal storage. I also have a remote controlled line level switcher so I can run all my source components through the Lokius.

I was ride or die with my Zunes, still am. Have the original brown one still, and a second generation one that a friend who worked on Zune development gave me. I've fixed them and kept them alive all these years. The software is tops. The Zune community that keeps it all going is badass.

Ed - Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I had and used a Zune back in the day. It now resides in the basement. You have motivated me to find it, to see if it is still in working order. and see what I was listening to back in the day. Always enjoy your content.

Thanks Jeff. I had to dig around as well. Then I had to wait for the batteries to get enough charge to wake up. It was kind of fun and nostalgic. Let me know if you need the software as I can get you a link to it. Send me an email oldguyhifi@gmail.com

Funny I’d argue that a large part of the iPod success was iTunes but I also was on a Mac and never was on the Winamp life. The Zune is fascinating as it was a solid competitor that was just too late to the market (2006), 5 years after the iPod. The iPhone would come out only a year after the Zune. At that point any media player was on borrowed time.
The interface is generally considered the first “flat” UI and the jump off for metro. In its own goofball way it has a massive lasting effect on design as MS moved us away from skeuomorphic design which was peak Apple.

I was never an Apple fan and found iTunes frustrating. The iPod was a great product.

I don't actually remember any ads for Zune, or knowing about it in the early 00s. Maybe their advertising, getting it to the customers, was not on par, so many early adopters missed oout until the ipod itunes came out (which I DID take part in) Great trip down a memory lane I never knew about.
The Zune interfact UI looks way less clunky than iTunes.

Thanks Richy. I appreciate you sharing. I don't know how much marketing Microsoft did for the Zune in the UK. Obviously the lack of awareness was a contributing factor in it failure. It was iTunes that drove me to switch to Zune. The software was great but could only play MP3 or .wma files. I still use it to rip CDs as .wma is lossless like FLAC and sounds good. Thanks again.

Neat video. Thanks for sharing. I never bought a Zune. I did hate iTunes. Still have several old iPods, even replaced the batteries and they still work. Love the nostalgia, good memories.
Thankfully, Apple Music is much improved from the iTunes days.
My favorite music manager is roon. Unfortunately it is pricey and at 71 could not see me paying $800 for their lifetime subscription. I am paying an annual subscription and really like the integration of my FLAC music with Tidal. I even bought a used Mac mini and use it as my roon server.
Really enjoying your videos, keep them coming. Wishing you lots of success in your UA-cam journey.

Thanks so much for the well wishes. I haven't looked at Apple anything in years. I did give Roon a try but settled on Audirvana Studio. I just think it sounds better. Just a personal preference. I know a lot of people who use and love Roon. I am curious to see what Harman (Samsung) does with Roon. I think I know. Teaser!

I have a Zune HD and a Zune 80gb in my desk right now, the same ones you have (although my HD is black). Miss them a lot, both broken because of me when I was young. I killed the Zune HD by trying to make a portable charger. The first code I ever saw was a homebrew app for the Zune HD, from a zune forum. That led me to learn programming and become a software engineer. I have tried to fix my Zunes multiple times and no luck :(
The Zune software was the best music software Ive ever used, I miss that too. I used to have the subscription and collected a lot of music with the 10 songs a month.

      @OldGuyHifi  3 місяці тому +1

I am sorry to hear yours is broken. I agree the software was/is very good. Too bad it will only play mp3s or WMA files. Everything these days is FLAC. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and your comment.

I still use my zune hd 16GB to this day. Got it on my bday a couple months after it release...has a few dings but is still 100% and even with the og battery i still get about 15hrs usage....just a damn good device. MS has made it some work to get the software workin since they stopped supporting it, but the zune community has kept the software working with some great work arounds. Great vid! +1 sub and like from me...keep em comin.

I agree about the quality of the units. I have not looked into the community and may do so. Thank you for the heads up. I really don't use mine anymore but I think I may connect it up to use as an offline music source. I plan on loading it up with lossless .wma file. I do appreciate the kind words of encouragement. I am trying to improve my camera work.

Nasty comment from a nasty person. This man's video is great. He is well spoken and appears on the screen. Also open to comments from viewers. When I go to your channel, all I seem to be able to find is a bunch of dusty videos with no production quality, poor mics and sound design, and nobody appearing on screen. Coughs not edited out, funeral dirge of a pace. And of course your comments are off.
