Herriot Way - Hawes to Keld, Part 2 of 4
A hike on the Herriot Way in the Yorkshire Dales with Simon AKA walking_daze.
Day 2 of 4 was a 12-mile high-level route following the Pennine Way over Great Shunner Fell.
Having spent the night camping at Hawes Youth Hostel and having had a fab breakfast it was time to make the steady climb up to the top of Great Shunner Fell, 2350ft.
It was humid in the dales and breezy on the tops which saw many people including Simon get a little well-cooked that day. The shelter on the top of Great Shunner Fell was a welcome break from the strong breeze.
Whilst it does offer a magnificent panorama of the landscape it's a proper hump of a hill rather than dramatic. However, once you begin to descend towards Swaledale and Keld all that begins to change.
Calling in at the Keld Lodge for a couple of cold ones was extremely welcome and slowly but surely more and more hikers began to appear seeking the same oasis.
We camped at Rukin's Campsite and it was rammed. However, the cafe was pretty quiet and the garden was sheltered and sunny so it would have been rude not to take advantage of the comfy chairs and try some of the local beers that can be purchased there. (By the way, the cakes are amazing).
My only warning to anyone visiting Keld is "Beware the Midges!" Sadly Swaledale is a midge breeding ground and they swarm a lot in the summer months.
Filmed on a Pixel 7 & DJI Mini 3.
Edited in Wondershare Filmora 13.
Music from Epidemic Sounds.

A hike on the Herriot Way in the Yorkshire Dales with Simon AKA walking_daze. Day 1 of 4 was a 14-mile low-level route following the River Ure through the beautiful Wensleydale. Starting at Ayesgarth Falls, calling in at the Kings Arms in Askrigg and finally arriving in Hawes. An excellent Burger was to be found in the Board Inn and finally pitched at the Hostel in Hawes for a great stay and br...

Day 3 was yet another 12-mile hike, it was a hot morning as I headed through the streets of Newquay over to Pentire. Crossing the Gannel was effortless and I was soon following through woodland along the side of the estuary. Just before arriving at Crantock Beach, I found a convenient beach store and cafe where a welcome cold drink was had. The next few miles to Holywell were relatively easy go...

Day 2 was another 12-mile hike, taking in some of the most beautiful coves, bays and beaches. The blue sky and sun made the the sea the most amazing colour on a par with something from the Caribbean. The sun was blisteringly hot and there was little respite from it until I reached the vious villages on the coves and found a handy cafe to hide from the sun for a while. I'd left home at 5 am and arrived in Newquay to drop my car off and then hopped on the Atlantic Coaster bus, it was packed full of tourists on their way to the many pretty villages. At 12:40 after picking up a traditional pasty from the Ric...

The Rosedale Circuit is a 10-mile hike starting and finishing in the pretty village of Rosedale Abbey in the heart of the Yorkshire Moors. First 2 jobs as the route is adopted as a National Trail - 1. Bridge over or tunnel under the A19 and 2, a footpath along that section of A road. We all got safely across the A19, only to nearly be mown down when a white van came off the A19 and round the corner much too fast. This can be the most dangerous section of the whole walk.
