6 Greatest Female Rock Singers Of All Time
How did you screw up the names of both the Brubeck and Beck albums? Worth noting: 'Ella and Louis', despite its magnificence in every other way, is a MONO album. In this way it becomes great speaker setup test record to make sure you're getting your L+R balance and sound pressure correct. Bizarrely you also recommended the REMIXED 2019 version of 'Abbey Road', and despite best efforts and a decent lacquer cut and resulting pressing, this 2019 MIX is inferior to the original. For less than 1/3 the cost of the MFSL, you can get a 2-lp version of 'What's Going On' cut by Kevin Gray!
Thank you for the advice. Sorry about the screw up. I knew it when I was editing but it was early in my UA-cam career and I never thought of just overlaying the words for the correction. You are not the only viewer who called me out on this. Well, I learned from that mistake. Thank you for watching.
Fabtastic pics! Thank you for sharing. Great sound. Thank you!
No problem. Thank you for watching
Even as someone who is 20, What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye is possibly the best album ever. It also is a top 5 favorite album of mine as well.
No argument from me. I love that album. BTW Rolling Stone magazine ranked “What’s Going On” as the #1 album of all time! Thank you for watching
The Beck LP is great sounding. Unfortunately the Mofi pressing goes for ridiculously high sums now. Out of interest, what turntables don’t have the ability to play 45s?
That statement has apparently bothered several viewers. My first turntable was rather cheap(age of 12). It would automatically bring the tonearm down only at the outer margin of the turntable. It could not play any 45rpm singles. Thank you for watching
Joshua Judges Ruth by Lyle Lovett👍🏼👍🏼
Yes, another great album! Thank you for watching
Time out thanks for video Brubeck and Desmond kill it!
Love that album. Same year as “Kind of Blue”. Thank you for watching
Frank zappa recorded some great stuff, diana krall. Unlimited orchestra by the league. Black sabbath first album. B52s.. Robbie and sly anything, all great recordings, fleetwood mac, a good copy of early pink floyd.. Brubeck, Stan getz quartet records, chet baker, John coltrane albums, free wheeling bob dylan.. I have always thought that decent jazz sounds better through valve amps with transmission line speakers like imf tls 50.. Amazing what sound you can get for reasonable money.. Love valve amps because you can still buy nos valves for the pre and power stages of your amp to get the sound that matches your speakers. We are all chasing the point of closing our eyes and get the feeling we have the band in the room with us..
I hear you and agree with you about valve amps. I have used tubes for the past 15 years and the sound is glorious. There are many other great sounding albums that I could not mention in the time of a reasonable length video. Jazz albums do typically have better sound than a standard pop or rock album. Likely related to the folks buying those albums being more critical in their purchase. Thank you for your comments and thank you for watching
Watched your video almost 5 months ago but owing to home renovation, I was unable to get to my CDs around the house. Now that it is over, and I would like to add something to your views. I guess with art of the compact disc, it has to be divided into boxed sets and individual CD as they are two totally different formats. For boxed set, the classical thing you mentioned is definitely very interesting. I would also suggest Velvet Underground's The Velvet Underground & Nico (45th Anniversary) which has the original banana peel; Grand Funk Railroad's Trunk of Funk which comes in like a big trunk; Dr. Feelgood's Looking Back which resembles a cigarette package; Ray Charles Pure Genius - The Complete Atlantic Recordings (1952-1959) which is like a small pick-up once you open the carrier box which comes with a handle; Alice Cooper's Life & Crimes with a picture of Alice behind a 3-D prison window and of course Jethro Tull never failed to come up with some genuine design throughout the years. Their 25th Anniversary Box Set is so luxuriously designed like another cigar box with a wonderful book within. As for individual CD release, The Rolling Stones Rolled Gold, the inlay comes with an origami design which I still can't figure out what it stands for or what it means; As I said before, Jethro Tull never stop to amaze. Their Stand Up 2CD & DVD Edition keeps the original Stand-up design. Then my favorite nband of all time Free, back in 2002, released in Japan, the album Free Live which is a replica of an envelops with stamps that can be pasted on the cover. Then later, they released entire collection individually that theie spine of each of the CD, if put together, reveal two members of the group, namely Paul Kossogg and Paul Rodgers! So much so for the nCD artwork. While going through my collection, I also came across a compilation by Harvest called Harvest Festival. It is not a particularly unusual design but the cover photo has some kind of Biblical reference. Absolutely clever. Maybe one day you would like to do one on great cover pictures of CD/vinyl? Thanks as always.
I am so glad you have listed a lot of box sets which I can explore. Thank you. The topic you mentioned may be a good one for a future video. Thank you for watching
Thanks for rekindling my interest in this album which has grown on me since I watched your video a few weeks ago. I actually bought the cassette of this album ages ago and later bought a CD but neither of them quite caught my ears until I watched your channel and decided to give it a go. Now I bought the latest version of this wonderful album on Impex and I am impressed. Thank you and I definitely agree with you it is, to my ears, better than Zombie's Odessey & Oracle.
Thank you for giving the album another listen. I have always enjoyed listening to “Elephant Mountain” but seem to forget how good an album it is. Thank you for watching
I'm shocked, there are turntables that can't play 45 rpm, really?
I was asked about that. I had a cheap turntable when I was maybe 12 that only worked on 33 1/3 rpm. The needle automatically dropped only at the outer edge of the platter. Thank you for watching
Ok Boomer.
Just my opinion. I own many outstanding albums from the 80s. My point is that when I listen to music, the 80s is the decade I listen to the least. Thank you for watching
I know you can't mention them all, but I'm surprised you didn't suggest Buckingham Nicks Polydor Records Robert Ludwig release. Great recommendations and I have you to thank for turning me on to Nightbird. Outstanding!
I’m glad you enjoyed that album. I do own the Buckingham Nicks album which is a personal favorite. Chad from Analogue Production tried to get this album recut but apparently the tapes were not in good shape. Thank you for watching
My go-to for all things volume related has always been The Jeff Beck Group, Goin' Down.
Ok. Thank you. I’ll check it out. Thank you for watching
My only question is why would you invite anyone to listen to your system when, they don't hear sound the same as you?
That may be true. However, I do go to audio shows and when we are in a room with good sound, most people agree that they like the sound of the system. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching
I hoped to actually hear the music
Sorry. That’s up to you. Also, with copyright laws, you cannot play music for more than a few seconds. Thank you for watching
"PromoSM" 😭
Very insightful video - personal musical taste notwithstanding. However, I do have a bone to pick with you regarding the mastering engineer segment. I'm a veteran recording engineer that has worked with most of the mastering engineers that you mention, and I agree that they are the best in their fields - truly master craftsmen - and I don't want to diminish their importance. However, the reason an album sounds as good or as bad as it does is not because of the mastering engineer but because of the RECORDING ENGINEER. A mastering engineer will spend perhaps one or 2 days on your record whereas the recording engineer (along with the producer and artist) will spend weeks, months and even years creating the sonic experience that you enjoy as the final product. In my experience (30 years) a great mastering session will add perhaps 10 to 15% to a final product, whereas poor mastering can destroy what everyone has spent so much time creating. Adding some final eq and perhaps compression doesn't transform an inferior recording into a great recording. Mastering will not "create" something that is not already on the master tapes that are sent to them. The final musical and sonic enjoyment of the music is the result of the hard work, dedication and creative ability of the band, producer and RECORDING ENGINEER.
Well said. Cannot argue with that. Thank you for your insightful comments and thank you for watching
Thank you also. Perhaps you could explain/expound on this issue on your channel. The public in general doesn't seem to understand. @@AllAboutAlbums
I'm Shattered that everyone didn't Boogie with Stu. Thanks Alex.
Love that. Thank you as always for watching
Classic 70s British rock with Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti and the Stones' Some Girls.
Too easy drill sergeant! Correct. Thank you for watching
@@AllAboutAlbums I was about to say that since I got them both right away, it was a much easier than usual. I don't know how I missed the last video because I would definitely have Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Anyway, glad to have found them this time. Also, got some new artists to check out. Thank you. Even though this type of music might not be my thing, I doesn't hurt to give these ladies a listen.
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti / Rolling Stones - some girls
Correct. I guess it was too easy. Thank you for watching
Great video, thank you. Can I make a couple of polite suggestions? The Oscar Peterson Trio “We Get Requests “ is a wonderful sounding album, available from Acoustic Sounds. Much more recently, Kirsten Edkins album, “shapes & sound” was recorded entirely in analog at Kevin Gray’s Cohearent Sound studio. I think Kevin Gray is an excellent engineer. Keep up the good work!
Thank you. I do agree with both of your suggestions. Thank you for watching
Stomu Yamashts's, Go Too Project, The Boston Pops , Rapacity in Blue . The Quintet , Live at Massey Hall, Kate Bush , Hounds of love and Micky Hart Band Mysterium Tremendum are the Record I take when Looking to Upgrade my stereo .
Boy, a lot to check out. Thank you for you suggestions and thank you for watching
Great suggestions. Especially like Dire straight and Norah Jones.... BTW Where can i get the painting behind you of 60s style portable audio ( red and gray ) ?? Would look great in my audio room, Thank you
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed. The wall art can be found at: Great Big Canvas and it is Hi-Fi wall art by Clayton Rabo. Thank you for watching
@@AllAboutAlbums Thanks much !
Thank you for bringing me Eva Cassidy
It’s a pleasure to do. It’s what I love to do. Thank you for watching
Alex, I wish you could have been one of my teachers when I was in school. You have a good way of explaining things. However, that might have been a little challenging because I'm pretty sure I'm older than you are. I would like to ask you some questions. After being a long time Spotify listener I finally figured out that the sound quality of what I have been listening to is substandard. And that makes me sad because I love music to a fault - like I can tell you do. So I need to find out how I can listen to high resolution sound. Would you mind if I asked you a few questions? Much respect to you from Larry in Washington state.
Of course. I may not know all the answers but I will do my best. Thank you for watching
I knew it, I knew you would respond back. Should I email you or how is the best way for me to pose a few questions to you? I promise I'll try to be as concise as possible. Cheers from Larry.
Send me a question via comments and I will answer you as soon as I can
It's always funny for me to see that americans call their audio gear STEREO ^
Yes, we use the term stereo incorrectly. Thank you for watching
David Crosby's solo debut album, "If I Could Only Remember My Name." is a perfect choice to impress friends! There's a 180g 45RPM SuperVinyl 2LP pressing, a 50th Anniversary edition, a color vinyl, the original Atlantic Records Monarch Pressing and others. I prefer the Monarch Pressing.
Thank you. That information is very helpful. Thank you for watching
A great set of recommendations, even for us streaming heretics! Comfy presentation too! Seeing you love early stereo jazz recordings, I have to mention Chet Baker's September Song album and particularly the song Alone Together. Superbly played and recorded, soooo natural! As my system improves and becomes more revealing, my list of top recordings shrinks, but this one keeps hanging in there.
I do like Chet Baker but haven’t heard that album. I’ll check it out. Also, your comment about fewer top recordings since your system improves is very interesting. I will however warn you that when your system becomes transparent to the source, blemishes will also be revealed. Thank you for your suggestion and thank you for watching
I enjoy your videos Alex. I will check out that Youngbloods album. Unknown albums: 1. Eno-Another Green World 2. Billy Joel- The Stranger.
Thank you. As for the unknown albums, correct on “The Stranger” but second album is Elton John, “Goodbye Yellowbrick Road”. Thank you for watching -
Masterpieces by Ellington
I totally agree. A great recording. Thank you for pointing that out and thank you for watching
Just curious, all other things being equal, why would you get mono instead of stereo?
Most audiophiles would argue that you should listen to the album as it was recorded. So, if the artist intended a mono recording, then that’s the way you should listen. I’m not saying that is correct, just how some listeners feel. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching
I've loved this album since it came out. It's just perfect.
I never bore of this album. When the album was in the cutout bins I would give it as a gift. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching
Been doing some sorting, weeding out, Deoxiting. Wound up with a Carver C1 with sonic holography, a Phase Linear 400 with fresh White Oak caps, a Marantz turntable, playing thru Polk 10s and Infinity SM150s. Xavier Cougat "Viva Cougat" , Michael Stanley Band, "Heartland", Carla Bonoff, "Wild Heart of the Young", Ralph VonWilliams "Fifth Symphony". When the Wife goes out, I'm cranking up the Theme from The Magnificent Seven and some Mark Knopfler.
Sounds like a good stereo system. Forgot about Carla Bonoff. Saw her back during college. Great voice. I should get out one of her albums and take a listen. Thank you for your comments and thank you for watching
@@AllAboutAlbums Her backing musicians were often a who's who of greats. I seem to recall many of them being known as The Section. Baby Don't Go and Gonna Be Mine are two of my faves. Have fun.
Nice job on this Alex, I had to Sub you.
Thank you. Hope you find a few good albums. Thank you for watching
I'm searching for the good ones.@@AllAboutAlbums
Your welcome.@@AllAboutAlbums
Those are all albums that I have zero interest in. Its crazy how different peoples taste in music can be, right?
Absolutely. That’s what makes life interesting. I don’t for a minute think that I have the ultimate taste. Enjoy your music and thank you for watching
I HATE greatest hits albums. They often include some new songs, so you HAVE to buy them as a fan.
I hear you. I rarely ever buy a greatest hits collection. If you enjoy the artist, check out an entire album and get a full experience about who they are. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching
Personally I don't like the 'remastered' editions, I think they take away some of the soul.
Many viewers would agree with you. To me it is an album by album decision. Thank you for watching
Gentle Giant is essential for showing off in all respects...
Noted. I will check those albums out. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching
Couldn’t agree more Alex.
I guess we may be in the minority. There were some good albums in the 80s, but it is the decade that I play the least. Thank you for watching
I agree with number of your picks! Great stuff. Others I might add: Tango In The Night (Fleetwood Mac), Walking Wounded (Everything But The Girl), Quiet Nights (Diana Krall), Unplugged (Eric Clapton), Hell Freezes Over (The Eagles), Days Of The New (Days Of The New),
Yes. I can only include so many, otherwise the video will be way too long. Your picks are all worthy to be included. Thank you for watching
Thank you! Great content now added to my playlists ... great stuff.
No problem. Hope you enjoy the new music. Thank you for watching
Then people will perhaps play CDs also on Blu-ray players or UHD Blu-ray players. on some of them you can also play SACD. And Blu-ray audio Should it basically be able to play on any Blu-ray player? Unlike DVD Audio
Very good points. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching
Thanks for the awesome music recommendations
No problem. Hope you enjoy them and find a favorite album. Thank you for watching
I spot some Golden Bisquits by TDN on the unknown albums but that second one has me stumped!
Correct on the first one. Second one is a British band from late 70s and 80s. Good luck. Thank you for watching
From the choices and comments there seem to be a lot of boomers hangout here whose taste didn't evolve with the times.
This seems to be true. We typically love what we were exposed to during high school and college. I always try to find new bands to enjoy. Thank you for your comments and thank you for watching
Consider some Bill Calahan/Smog?
I do like Smog, but not in my top 10. Thank you for watching
I do love a lot of XTC.
I do too. Thank you for watching
FYI @TrashTheory just released a video on XTC and it' quite interesting.
Nice. Thank you for the info. I’ll definitely check it out. Thank you for watching
I wonder if Scot from The Prog Corner has seen it as he's a massive fan. I'm also a fan and will check it out, thanks!
Beautiful album by Carl Broemel! Make sure to check out his album "4th of July" too! I can't drive to the cottage without playing one of them.
I agree. Thank you for your comments and thank you for watching
And anyone else would recommend different albums they love as its a personal taste. I may go for the beatles but you cant really recommend albums to so many varieties of people & age groups, its what you grow up with & personal, you will never find 2 people with the same record collection on the planet. I have about 3000 albums but I started in the 70s, but I certainly have a better system than my first record deck from f w woolworths for £30 & my barry white album £2.50
I do agree with you. However, I’m trying to guide people as to labels, engineers and pressing plants to make a more informed decision as to a good sounding album. Thank you for your comments and thank you for watching
