    Although the 70's is probably the best ever decade for music, the 1980s was also excellent if you were'nt into chart music.
    Here in the uk we had a fantastic post-punk scene which produced some of the best and most inventive music ever.
    XTC, the cure, cocteau twins, siouxsie and the banshees, wire, the fall, the smiths, dead can dance, public image ltd, plus bands like sonic youth and pixies from the usa. Peter gabriel released great music and so did david sylvian. Many more i could mention.

    I have to chime in with my love the 80's in no small part due to a lot of the artists/albums you mention - REM, Elvis Costello, XTC, the dBs, Squeeze, Crowded House as well as The Smiths, Feelies, Marshall Crenshaw, Go-Betweens, Lloyd Cole, and The Church just name a handful. I guess I'm sentimental toward the 80's because these were my formative high school and college years and I definitely lean toward the indie alternative/jangle pop artists rather than the synth-based new wave. Thanks for another fun video! / Matt

Besides everything you mentioned, I'd add the Pretenders, the Smiths, the Cure, Bowie's Let's Dance, Talking Heads' Speaking in Tongues, and Cowboy Junkies' The Trinity Sessions. And then on the more alternative/underground side, there was, of course, the Replacements, Camper Van Beethoven, Husker Du, Screaming Trees, Throwing Muses, the Pixies, the Mekons, the Meat Puppets, Black Flag, Fugazi, Minor Threat, Sonic Youth, and so much more.

    Interesting list with a lot of really good/great music. Although a 1989 album (so almost out of the category) and i guess a very British album given the subject matter of some the songs i would include New Model Army's "Thunder and Consolation", gritty lyrics and a no compromise rock/punk attitude with a bit of folk thrown in as well that spoke to large number of my peers of the post-free festival/traveler scene.

    So, I just watched this video. You knew you were going to get flak for this one... Regarding your comment that the 1980's was the worst decade for music, you are not only wrong, you are dead wrong. You were young in the 1960s/1970s; I was young in the 1970's/1980s. The 1980s was my decade. You may not like songs made with synthesizers... you mentioned 'til Tuesday and Peter Gabriel as artists that "saved the '80s"(those artists didn't heavily use synthesizers...?) -- I think you are wrongly stereotyping '80s music as being synth-soaked and all about image. Some of the very popular '80's albums did use a lot of synths, yes. But there are many groups that you completely (conveniently?) ignore, such as The Police, Duran Duran, Foreigner, Journey, Billy Joel, Tom Petty, Styx, Hall & Oates, Pat Benatar, John Cougar Mellencamp, Genesis, Phil Collins, Men at Work, David Bowie, Spandau Ballet (many of whose music was actually not synthesizer driven), who had massive, massive hits (and massive sales as you frequently mention regarding artists), and acclaimed by critics and audience alike, from the 1980s. Sure the MTV videos helped us to see what the artists were like, but to me, the videos were always boring compared to the music. It actually was not all about image to me. You also dismiss the 1980's as a decade of excess - it may have been that way for some people but it wasn't for me, being a poor teenager who loved a lot of the music that was being produced. I have actually watched (and liked) a great many of your videos, and I have enjoyed the information regarding artists who I don't know as well, and have even taken notes as far as some 1970's artists who I would like to explore further, which you discuss, but this video surprised me; it kind of came out of left field and by the end, I was left saying... "what??". I'm just saying, to dismiss an entire decade out-of-hand, as it to say it mostly sucked, seems a bit over-the-top opinionated, and potentially alienating to many viewers.

    • @AllAboutAlbums
      @AllAboutAlbums  2 роки тому

      You are correct. I’m sorry to have made you upset but it’s only my opinion. You have every right to love the 80s. Some the artists you mentioned began in the 70s and then carried over to the 80s. It just that I notice I tend to pick very few albums to listen to from my 80s collection. Yes, some of it has to do with how old you are and emotions that come with that decade. I am further removed from the 90s and still prefer those albums more. I respect your view and it makes for good discussion. Wouldn’t the world be boring if everyone liked the same thing. Thank you for your comments and thank you for watching

    and 70’s pop idols that was considered washed up by critics and the industry but end up making their most successful albums in the 80’s
    Whispering Jack by John Farnham is a strong adult contemporary pop album that ended up being the most successful Australian album sold domestically with in Australia with sales 1,700,000 that’s 24x platinum in Australia. John Farnham’s 3 albums with the Little River Band - The Net , Playing To Win , No Reins are so underrated and was the blueprint for John Farnham’s solo comeback album Whispering Jack .

    I found this to be a very interesting video and opinion, so thank you. My take comes from an opinion I have and not "anger". I grew up in the 1980's. I watched MTV and listened to the radio. I also bought a lot of albums! I grew up hearing, mostly from Baby Boomers, about the glorious 60's and early 70's music. I heard how I missed the best music and artists EVER! I mean grass was green and flowers bloomed bright. They would list off a LONG list of songs and artists that were "great". I started listening to a LOT of this 60's music and fell in love with it. But no matter how much I liked it or loved it, I always had this disconnect of real life experience and memories. I would hear, again from Baby Boomers, how "you had to be there to really understand". I guess that is true with so many things in life. The Beatles became one of my favorite groups, not because of "Beatles Mania" but because of how good their music is.I could appreciate what was without having to say "my music is better than yours" or "lame old people, get over it". There was enough room in my soul for what was and what is.
    In the 1980's I would often hear Baby Boomers say most of the same things you are saying. Put downs and snarky remarks are what I would hear. NOT saying you are putting anyone down or being snarky. I am saying that is how I would hear it back then. I kept finding it interesting that Baby Boomers were so upset by the music of the 80's. If you turned on the radio what did you hear? A LOT of bands that got their start in the 60's and 70's. HUGE artists like Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Bruce Springsteen, Grateful Dead, Hall & Oates, Chicago, The Rolling Stones and countless others. Artists that Baby Boomers held up as "the best ever". They ALL had HUGE hits in the decade. The song writers were mostly Baby Boomers. There were countless remakes of 60's songs topping the charts. There were actual 60's songs, by 60's artists, like "Twist and Shout" by The Beatles or Ben E Kings "Stand By Me" or music from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack re-charting in the 80's. You had The Beach Boys scoring a #1 with "Kokomo". Starship's, widely HATED #1 "We Built This City", by a group built out of the ashes of Jefferson Airplane/Starship. The point of it all was, I felt we were a generation under the boot of the Baby Boomers. Trying to do the dance and sing the songs they wanted. All while being told "not good enough". I know, get out the tiny violins. The Baby Boomers have no one to blame for 80's music but themselves! They controlled the record labels, who were trying to keep their own generation interested in music by propping up their childhood artists. The "real bands" of the 80's, many you mentioned, were trying to make their own path in this mess. Were trying to break free from the many rules put in place. XTC, Talking Heads, Tears For Fears, The Police and countless others. So I find it a little hollow when Baby Boomers roll their collective eyes at the 80's. A decade THEY were in control. They were the middle aged, working class. They were more directly responsible for what was passing for entertainment than anyone else. Now many decades removed trying to look back and act like "didn't that decade suck?" They then followed it with "back when I was young we had real music, real artists and a lot less filler". Yeah, I'm sure I can't find any filler/disposable pop artists or trends in the 60's or early 70's. Facts is EVERY generation has them. Every generation has that throwaway, over produced crap. Those songs and artists fade away. The ones that remain are the quality ones, from every decade, who did something original or game changing.
    Again, I say all of this not from anger or hate. I value your opinion and your right to say it. But I do believe this idea of one decade being "worst" or "awful" is getting old. There are no scapegoats on the train to crappy music. The 80's is what it is, good or bad.

      @AllAboutAlbums  Рік тому +1

    I don't think you properly listened to the 80s, man. Poor take. But I try to appreciate where you're coming from.
    There was an explosion of talent that came through in the 80s, and yes while I'd agree I'm not always a fan of the over polished, auto synchronised makeover radio friendly hits had, the actual music itself was hugely innovative and inspiring. Almost every genre blossomed and grew. I've listened to everything from pop and soul to metal and UK Bhangra 😄 and they all had a renaissance of some sort in the 80s.

    Yeah, opinions are like a**holes...everybody's got one. The 80s is not the weakest decade...not by a long shot. Especially if you factor in the decades that followed, which since you're a boomer, you probably didn't. Its all going to depend on when you were young and music had the most influence in your life. For me, that was the 80s. I like the 70s too...some 60s and a lot of the 90s. It is a little irritating to hear some older dude to say the 80s were weak for music. Maybe your video did explain some of your attitude, but tbh, I didn't watch much more than a couple minutes of this since it was pretty obvious where you were going. Pffft.

    The unnamed engineer who conducted his research on timbre, harmony and chord changes obviously has gather masses on information but I am curious as to why melody was not included. Is that because the quality of a melody is more difficult to define through analysis. Harmonic and chordal structures can be measured yet melody that most beautiful aspect of a piece (for some) is so very subjective. I might have once agreed with the conclusion drawn by this video if it wasn't for all the output from about 2000 onwards hadn't have been so dire.
    This was an enjoyable post and I found it both interesting and engaging.

    I know that it's where modern 'rock' music really began but honestly if I had to choose between the fifties and the eighties I would choose the eighties every time. (I suspect that only those who grew up in the fifties would think otherwise...)

    The 80’s were a tough decade for me also. I wasn’t into the hair metal: Poison, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot- the titles of the bands said it all. I found bands like The Smiths, The Cure, New Order a bit depressing. Some of my favorite artists of all time released some of the lamest efforts in their catalog (Stones, Neil Young, Dylan, Petty, McCartney) in the 80s so that was also a bummer . So thank God for U-2, some solid rock from ZZ Top, Heart, Rush, INXS, Van Halen, Tears for Fears and Simple Minds. The overachiever award goes to Springsteen, releasing The River, Nebraska, Born in the USA and Tunnel of Love in the same decade!

      I never thought about Springsteen and his 80s excellent production. I always think of Springsteen as a 70s artist. I do think Tears For Fears were not as respected as they should have been.
