The PSP is still INSANE in 2024
The PlayStation Portable (PSP) was one of, if not the most impressive gaming devices of the 2000s in terms of raw features and capabilities. In today’s mobile obsessed world, it’s a platform worth revisiting as we approach its 20th anniversary. So in this video, let’s discuss why this system was so far ahead of its time in so many ways, explore how impressive some of the games still look, and investigate underappreciated capabilities buried in its hardware.

In this sequel to the smash hit video - "GameCube graphics still look amazing in 2024" - we’ll investigate two critical topics. First, we’ll analyze even more amazing looking games that just couldn’t fit into Part 1. Second, we’ll explore extensive visual comparisons between a cheap, generic setup and a max quality, more expensive to ensure the max output signal quality to your TV. There’s so m...
Luigi's Mansion games ranked! Which is the best? Spooky special.
Переглядів 211Місяць тому
When Luigi’s Mansion debuted on the GameCube in 2001, it certainly wasn’t what most gamers expected from the flagship launch title of a new Nintendo console. The N64 launched with Mario jumping and star collecting across sunny skies, but Nintendo committed to the exact opposite for the GameCube’s debut. Luigi’s mansion delivered a literally dark, slow moving new IP without a single jump to be f...
Echoes of Wisdom - Two Issues Preventing Greatness

Echoes of Wisdom has arrived on Switch, and gamers finally get to play as Zelda in a Legend of Zelda game. However, despite plenty of compelling elements, Echoes of Wisdom struggles with two design issues that cause the game to only Echo greatness, rather than fully capturing it. So in this video, we'll explore what those problems are, and some simple alternatives that might have improved the e...
Star Fox Assault - how much gameplay did it REALLY have?
Переглядів 1,7 тис.Місяць тому
Star Fox Assault delivered both action and controversy when it zoomed onto the GameCube in 2005. The game promised a return to action-packed Arwing missions after the slower Star Fox Adventures in 2002. But many players felt that Fox still spent way too much time outside of his ship. How true is this claim? How much Arwing gameplay - or even total gameplay - is there in this unique game? Let's ...
Star Fox Adventures is NOT a Legend of Zelda clone.

Star Fox Adventures is an unusual and surprisingly divisive game. Released in 2002 for the GameCube, this title from Nintendo and Rare wasn’t the Star Fox game many gamers expected from their next gen lunchbox. Many were quick to label this title simply as a Zelda rip off, a sentiment I don’t really agree with. So in this video, let’s examine why Star Fox Adventures is not really a Zelda clone,...
Is the Metroid Prime Trilogy the answer for Prime 2 and 3 ports?

The 2025 release of Metroid Prime 4 draws closer every day after nearly a decade of waiting. A slow burn of rumors and speculation has left gamers wondering if we’ll ever see a similar treatment for Prime 2 and 3. Unfortunately, at this point a full graphical overhaul of either of these games might be unlikely, which we’ll discuss more in a moment, but there’s still hope on the horizon. You see...

    Metroid prime 1 was the first FPS game I ever played and I loved it. My brothers and dad couldn’t beat the 2nd boss so I took it upon myself as a kid to try and beat it. I ended up loving it so much I’d replay the campaign multiple times. I still go back and play it every now and again, same with Luigi’s mansion. I loved it so much that I went back and learned how to speedrun it as a teen lol.

    Nintendo games in general are just slick as f*. Most AAA games today are not even finished when released, and then it's patches over patches to try to fix them until, maybe, they get to a decent level of performance. I don't know if it's still true today, but at the time Nintendo always lowered the expectations in terms of graphics and "realism" to deliver great gameplay experience and visual quality.

    • @crywolfplays

      It's still true today, but I agree - I miss the days where you just bought a game and it was complete with basically no bugs and just worked day 1 and forever. For the most part nintendo still does that, but most companies don't.

    I was one of the 80 million. I wasn't an early adopter tho. I got mine in '07 and it was glorious! It replaced my MP3 player, it was also how I'd show people digital photos while I was away from my PC, it was how I watched anime and movies on the go, and even after my phone replaced all those roles, it still had amazing games like DBZ Shin Budokai 2, MegaMan: Maverick Hunter X, Crisis Core: FFVII, Kingdom Hearts: BBS, Duodecim Dissidia, GTA: VCS/LCS/CTW, Tenchu 3, MGS: Portable Ops & Peace Walker, Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles (basically Requiem before Requiem) and that's just a few off the top of my head, there are a tonne that I didn't even mention. The games on here were so high tier that when I got a 3DS with my friends and they were gushing over the graphics, I pulled out my PSP and showed them that I'd been playing games of that calibur for literal years

    I disagree. Touch screens sucks. Vita has one (or even two) and I never used them and just find them to be annoying. In fact games that FORCE you to use that new gimmick are really annoying and you wish the game would not use a touch screen. • @voteDC
    @voteDC День тому

    While the games often hold up really well the PSP itself isn't the best way to play most of those titles. Emulation offers upscaling, HD texture replacement, easy access to cheats and save states. If you use a controller you can even map the camera controls, if a game had them via face or shoulder buttons, to the right analogue stick. If not for the UMD movies I own my PSP would have been retired long ago. If the PPSSPP emulator ever gains that functionality my PSP gets put in a safe place for me to enjoy the memories I made with it.

    • @ramdomgunner97
      @ramdomgunner97 День тому

      personally I'm of the opposite opinion. I love how portable the psp is, for me playing it on an emulator on my computer defeats the purpose. some turn-based rpgs maybe I can see being as good of an experience on a smartphone emulator, but any game that requires quick reflexes becomes annoying on the touch buttons of those emulators. also in general I like playing games in the consoles for which they were designed. my biggest problem is that my old psp's analog stick is getting drift problems

    • @voteDC
      @voteDC День тому

      @@ramdomgunner97 Phones have controllers too. You can also buy retro gaming handhelds like the Retroid Pocket 3+ that are pretty much perfect for PSP games. You really aren't just limited to touch controls. The RP3+ isn't even that much larger than a PSP, 1000 at least, so you aren't even sacrificing portability. Another element for me is that my PSP isn't getting any younger and I'd rather keep it in working order for as long as possible. I've been able to transfer my saves from my PSP to PPSSPP and carry on from where I left off.

      Some of the games did have long load times, especially for a handheld. Large memory cards of equivalent 2gb size or so were still pretty expensive in 2004 though I'm not sure how that would have played out. Micro SD was only barely introduced in 2004, they would have probably had to use regular SD cards.

      It's so odd to not include a second nub thing. It wouldn't have cos that much more to the price, and would have helped so much with the controls, especially when so many PS2 ports were brought over.

      @@skycloud4802 I agree, there are so many other features worth cutting to make "cost room" for a second joystick. Maybe it was due to the internal layout of the components that made it difficult

    Also you could use a ps3 controller when playing on TV, even further comparing it to a switch

      @crywolfplays actually ive discovered that if you have the psp go, you could use the dock to show on tv and use a ps3 controller. but the other psp's you need to use the psp itself as a controller on the tv or you could mod it.

      @@crywolfplaysDon't worry, Burnout Dominator is probably the most forgotten Burnout game tbh. There was also Need for Speed Shift on PSP which runs on the same engine and was made by the same dev team.

      Id love this, but I hope Sony eventually makes a series S type handheld that can play downscaled PS5 or cross gen games, I don't think they'd have the resources for another whole system. Maybe that's becoming less relevant as they port to PC, but I'm not a huge fan of current handheld PCs

      More like please be 2005 again. I think consoles are a dying category. There's incresingly less games for them that aren't also for pc, they keep getting more expensive, etc. It's not such a bad thing, since now almost any gamer can get by just owning a pc, but we'll never get back back that feeling of being excited for a new console with soon to be hundreds of future classics and gems that can only be experienced on that console.

    I swear CryWolf it's almost like you know what I like. A friend gave me my PSP, it was my first portable console. The design is just beautiful, isn't it? It's hard to describe to someone who hasn't held it before. I can't believe they were able to put in such a good screen on a 2004 device. I also can't believe you captured from a real PSP. Do you not need a PS3 to output on TV? Just the cables? You choose some very good picks for games but I'll just throw a couple more out there: NFS Carbon Own the City - You did touch on Need for Speed but the first two PSP games were pretty rushed, Carbon OTC actually has a full-open world on the PSP. Test Drive Unlimited on PSP is also open world apparently. Motorstorm Arctic Edge: One of the most fun games on the PSP, with a cool winter festival theme and fast loading times for the PSP. It also got a PS2 port (in 2009!) Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix: A port of the home console versions with essentially all of the content retained, quite impressive for a launch title. The fps is halved to 30 but it's still very good. LittleBigPlanet PSP: I mean, you're almost playing a PS3 game on portable hardware with this one. You can even make your own stages still. Tbh my only problems with the PSP are some of the eccentric hardware choices, like the Memory Stick Duo, the screen being prone to ghosting in retro games (SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis Collection is pretty egregious for this.) Oh yeah, can we also talk about Game Sharing? It's like download play on the DS, it's really cool. Although only a few games like Namco Museum, Burnout Legends, and Sonic Rivals 2 used it. Great job CryWolf. I might need to fire up my PSP now. If it's not out of battery😂

      Thanks for sharing! It really is a beautiful system, even today but for 2004 it was crazy. I did capture this off a real PSP without a PS3 - as long as you buy that component cable from Sony shown in the video, you just need an adapter to convert the component signal to HDMI, and then you can feed that into a capture card. It's really kind of amazing. There were so many great games for this system it was difficult to try and cram a lot of them into a reasonable amount of time, but your suggestions are great ones too. I remember having a lot of fun with underground.

      @@crywolfplaysOh..I already said too many but I have to mention Gran Turismo on PSP as well. Having essentialy GT4 on the go is wild. What's weird about that game is, in the options menu, they have a setting that optimises the game for TV playback? I haven't tried it but it interrsts me..
