Star Fox Adventures may not be a Zelda clone, but it's mechanically similar enough that Nintendo would sue anyone else who made it for patent infringement.
@@IaconDawnshire Had the Darksiders series reached Palworld's level of popularity, I fully believe they would have. Palworld sold more copies in its first week than the entire Darksiders franchise has sold.
I remember looking forward to this game when it was still the N64 game Dinosaur Planet. At first it felt cool that they upgraded to the Gamecube, and I didn't mind the Star Fox elements. What I found disappointing was that the original main character, Krystal, had such a small part in the game. Add to that, the rug pull at the end where General Scales didn't even get a Boss Fight, kinda spoiled the fun. Playing through the game more than a few times, and the low difficulty of the game made it feel more like "Fox takes an Adventure Vacation to Dinosaur Planet." rather than "Save the dinosaurs, save the Lylat System!" to me. What makes it sad when I look back at the game were the behind the scenes issues I didn't understand when this game came out. Nintendo leaned on Rare to turn Dinosaur Planet into a Star Fox game. That change in development direction, plus the sale of Rare to Microsoft, really hurt the final game. I see the cut corners and the rush to finish more than the original game it was meant to be.
When I was a kid I must have asked my dad to take me to the game store to buy this game like 6 times before it came out. I followed it like crazy and internet sources weren’t great then. I never thought of it much like Zelda. I guess cause it’s rare and has the rareware charm, I thought more of like dk64 and banjo. Being older I can understand the argument of it being a clone I just don’t agree. I also never really saw any positive opinions of the game. All I can remember, for myself, is being extremely excited for the game to release, loving the box art and loving every second of the game. I think I tried to play again many years back and thinking Tricky was annoying.
I have 2 opinions. 1) it’s a timeless classic that i’ve played many times. I think it’s a GREAT game. But disappointed the part of me wanting more space shooting. 2) i would have liked to see the original “Dinosaur Planet” game without Starfox being put in fully realized . And i woulda liked there to be a game to FINALLY stand toe to toe with Starfox 64. BUT, do i think that’s worth loosing the game we got? NO!!
If a game that looks like this runs in perfect 60 FPS on GameCube then I don't see why Zelda couldn't. Rare mastered Nintendo's hardware more than Nintendo
It's crazy that this game somehow pushes double the framerate and almost double the poly count, with much crisper textures, faster/less loading, much better shadows, *and* that beautiful fur effect, compared to the two Zelda games. I mean, the GCN Zeldas both look nice, with Wind Waker aging especially gracefully, but Rare's technical prowess was on a whole other level.
I feel like the problem with Star Fox Adventures is that it's an original game with Star Fox elements thrown in (and thrown in hastily). When I played the leaked beta of Dinosaur Planet for Nintendo 64 I saw the potential the game had, it was as good an adventure game (and even better in some aspects) than Ocarina of Time or Majora Mask, it used the hardware of the Nintendo 64 to the fullest and had the potential to be one of the RARE classics that closed the Nintendo 64 cycle with a flourish, instead it ended up being remembered as one of the Star Fox that not even Star Fox fans like. I really didn't like how Krystal, who had an incredible arc as one of the main protagonists of the story, ended up being trapped in the crystal the entire game to make room for Fox Mcloud and his group, I really have the feeling that if they hadn't tried to transform the game in a last minute Star Fox game it would be much better seen nowadays.
This is probably my favorite Star Fox game. I'm a sucker for blacksheeps that try something new with a franchise and do it well and I think Star Fox Adventures did that well.
The lighting in this game is so superior that it probably cannot reachieved on Switch 2. Look at how the lighting effects in the Metroid Prime remaster was removed.
Star Fox Adventures is definitely an interesting game. I’m had a lot of fun with it, but it definitely has its issues. I’m glad it added cool stuff to the series, but it’s not really Star Fox. I’m sure you’re aware of Rare’s original Dinosaur Planet game for the N64 that eventually morphed into SFA after Nintendo “suggested” they make it Star Fox because Krystal’s adoptive brother Sabre vaguely resembled Fox. Dinosaur Planet would’ve been the superior game, and I can say that with austerity since a build of the game leaked, and a bunch of crazy people (crazy meant as a compliment) have been hard at work to take this broken buggy mess that crashes all the time, and are turning it into Rare’s magnum opus. Haven’t played it yet since I’m still waiting for the game to become more complete/stable. Assault would’ve been the better follow up to 64 since it actually builds on what came before. Although, I definitely agree that the on foot sections were half baked. It would’ve been interesting to see what that game could’ve been with more time in the oven.
In the infinite void of gaming UA-cam we have only Crywolf plays to thank for giving respect to those of us growing up in the early 00s. Validating, examining, and appreciating the art that brought us up. Who else gives flowers to the games that sewed themselves to our heart? The answer is that nobody can give the level of attention to these core memories like Crywolf Plays. I will unapologetically watch every video and subscribe as should you.
If you want a proper Star Fox game go check out IceCreamMan/UndyingNephalim’s fan game Star Fox Event Horizon. It’s a mod for Freespace Open (open source game so it’s 100% free) that reimagines the 64 continuity. The guy got Krystal and Wolf’s original voice actors to reprise their roles for his mod. It’s pretty impressive just how much content there is. The gameplay is a lot of fun, but unfortunately due to engine limitations you can’t have on foot sections (the guy got ground vehicles working, but it’s very janky). The visuals are also a mixed bag with plenty of things being very faithful recreations of their official counterparts, but the character’s faces are UGLY. Anyone reading this should check it out. Just don’t talk about his older Zelda fan projects like Fallen Sage/Time’s Menagerie games that were made in RPG Maker, or his Gerudo Wars comic because he’ll ban you from the comment section (let’s just say if I didn’t know he was like 15 when he made those I’d assume he was a Minecraft UA-camr. There was a lot of really sus stuff involving YOUNG characters like his kiddy waifu Saria🤣🤮).
What kind of serial killer double spaces new sentences but skips the whole 'new paragraph' thing? Also, this sounds cool, but having just now looked up some gameplay from three diff vids, the screen does not seem to stop fkin shaking during each and every second of gameplay. Might be fine for some, but Freespace Open supports VR which is how I like it, and that sheeeet would have me on the vomit comet in no time, lmao. Still, cool proj, thanks for sharing.
The problem is that they tried to fit the Star Fox universe into a game that would work really well with other characters (as it was originally). But I still like the game, especially the OST. The visuals are incredible to this day. Not the best farewell from Rare, but still great.
I used to really enjoy this game, played it a lot. But I guess it just got old or I've been exposed to more complex puzzles by my last playthrough and there isn't much fun. I wish the project Star Fox Re adventures Esphirian is working on was an official project. Where that game basically transforms the game into an open world. Even bringing back dinosaur planet concepts like Krystal being playable for more as much of the game with Estelle Ellis reprising her role. She uses the staff and rides the dinosaurs like the tetradactyl while fox uses his blaster and machines like arwing more often. The game is basically more combat driven and explorative over puzzle solving.
I love this game! Thank you for the throwback! The gameplay, puzzles and environments also reminded me a bit of Jet Force Gemini (also rare) which I loved..honestly, I'd LOVE to have another starfox game like this. And hopefully get Krystal in smash one day!
XD Yeah, history, kinda of rhymes. This games was gamings XBC2 before XBC existed. The only thing is that kinda sucks is that was a game made by rare is which Krystal was a herorine and it was made into a SF game and they made Krystal a fox and too her out of the leather dress , put her is tribal underwear and made into a damsel in distress. This game, couldn't have been made today, twitter would have had a temper tantrum. Though, Krystal could very become of Star fox during Star fox assault and had her own in Adventures.
Perhaps amusingly, the final reveal of SF:A set a trend we see often in later Zelda games: Through the course of the games, you think you're fighting an original villain, but it turns out to be Ganon after all.
Interesting - another paralle, even though I didn't add this in the video - but interestingly I also think Skyward Sword is sort of the closest Zelda to Star Fox in structure, which came years later. You fly from a small hub area to other parts of the world and it prioritizes small segments of gameplay/obstacle courses over wider open exploration.
Yeah, it's a Zelda clone, that's just kinda what Rare did then, take a popular, usually Nintendo, thing and make their own version of it. Mortal Kombat to KI, Banjo to SM64, DKR to MK64 and, of course, OOT to Dinosaur Planet. These are all different in many ways but wear their primary inspiration blatantly and unmistakably. The big difference is that for whatever reason, Nintendo didn't want a Zelda competitor so had them shove this completely different franchise in to Dinosaur Planet to prevent it from expanding further.
I always liked it but coming back to it, the staff combat gets really repetitive. I like the utility of it but just whacking Sharpclaws for hours is my only issue.
I want a remaster so bad, like you said, just the same game playable in HD resolution on Switch would be awesome - some minor texture cleanup would just be a bonus.
This game was so awesome. Loved it. It made me love fox. But it's the only star fox game i played cuz I'm not into the star fox typical games so I only played this. That being said Zelda is my favorite game so I guess it makes sense why I absolutely love this game. This game still holds up so good
So the main argument in this video is that Star Fox Adventures is not a Zelda clone because 1) Zelda has large, open environments on one hand, and complex dungeon on the other hand; 2) Star Fox Adventures has environments that are a mix of both; no environment is as large or open as Zelda's ones, but also there's no complex dungeon, however most environments do have good amounts of puzzle solving
It's a good game but it should never have been made into a Star Fox game. The Zelda comparisons are obvious to me due to the puzzle solving aspect so in that regard, I don't really think it's controversial at all to compare SFA to Zelda. However, the game clearly suffered from the forced transition from Dinosaur Planet to SFA due to Nintendo meddling and you can really see they spent too much time trying to shoehorn Star Fox characteristics into a game clearly not intended for on rails segments. If Nintendo had asked Rare to just port DP to the GCN instead of reworking entire segments of the game to make SFA, it would've turned out a lot better than it did and the temple/gameplay flaws would've been refined.
I enjoyed the video, and many of the individual points you make are true, but I have to disagree with the main assertion. I think a lot of what you're saying just boils down to: "SFA did copy Zelda, but didn't do it as well or as ambitiously, so it's different". While I liked SFA at the time- and it still has some good points for sure, like the graphics- I was disappointed upon revisiting it a few years back. It basically feels like a Metroidvania that was streamlined so heavily that it lost all depth. It hit me that the items and powers you collect are all just thinly disguised keys. Sure, Metroid has literal colour-coded doors, but the upgrades usually have a variety of applications in combat and traversal. In SFA, each upgrade or item just has a specific purpose, and can't be used out of that intended context. (Compare Samus's space jump to Fox's boost jump, for example.) PS: I don't believe you mentioned SFA's N64 origin- or you glossed over it so quickly that I missed it? Many of the biggest differences between SFA and the Zelda series are around the whole Star Fox theme, which was just shoehorned into the game, some 80-90% into development. PPS: It's interesting to see how far along this game was at E3 1999, just a few months after Ocarina of Time came out. Did it actually _copy_ Zelda, per se, or did both teams have similar ideas, with varying degrees of success in implementing them? (Or a mix of both, more likely?)
Thanks for this feedback and comment, great points here. I never really thought about the upgrades as glorified keys, but to a large extent you're right. A couple of the staff abilities can be used everywhere, but most are for specific purposes and the combat never really evolves as it goes on. Interesting point and thoughts about the N64 development.
