I REALLY hope Prime 4 releases for the next console as a launch title. We've seen how GORGEOUS Prime Remastered looks on the Switch, which we all know how underpowered it is nowadays, so imagine what they can pull off with a stronger hardware for Prime 4? The Prime series really deserves the best presentation in the world due to its setting, and I think Prime 4 would be the perfect showcase to the Switch's successor's graphics and capabilities. Or rather, the PRIME showcase :P
Metroid prime sales on gamecube surprised nintendo so they they made more metroid games. The problem is that metroid didn't sold well during this decade, no game was able to reach the popularity of the first prime game (until dread of course)
With the rest of the Prime Trilogy, they were presented as the marquee entries at that time. And for them to sell less substantially may be better explained by other factors. On one hand, Prime 1’s success could’ve been a fluke? As the series chugged along, it was still perceived as rather niche among the wider gaming audience. This case is worse for MP3, released on a console heavily marketed and slandered as the [non-gamer] family’s game console. And then there’s poor release timing. MP2 released the same month as Halo 2, MGS3, Half-Life 2, and the DS (among other titles). MP3 released weeks before Halo 3, one of the largest game releases ever at the time. While comparing the two franchises is more of an apples to oranges comparison, Halo and Metroid were still heavily compared (perhaps to the latter’s detriment). It was kind of why MP2 got split-screen PVP. (Oh, and Other M released weeks before Halo: Reach.) Metroid is a very unique franchise. It’s part platforming, part combat, part labrynthian adventure, all evoking themes of alienation and dread. For a video game series, those criteria may well render it niche by default. Even with its legendary status in the wider industry and culture. I’m not even sure what it may look like if it were far more popular despite those criteria. Would it even be the same kind of game that owes a whole genre its namesake?
Am I the only one who thinks the Metroid series has atleast sold well enough now for some of the old Metroid Mangas to be physically rereleased here in the US where Metroid is most popular? Like they did with the Zelda Mangas.
I'm kinda sad they stopped doing semi-official manga tie ins for their franchises, especially Zelda. BoTW and ToTK just feel like ripe material for a series, something in the vein of the TP one. I'd love to see then do a Metroid one too at some point.
@@cato3277to be fair, the TP one took years and only finished a year or two ago. And that was an adaptation of a 2006 game. Give it time, there's still hope
On one hand, I think it's kind of a shame that the backlash to Other M and especially Federation Force means we're not likely to see Metroid try to get weird and experimental again like it did with Pinball and Hunters. But at the same time Hunters in particular feels like it was really held back by being made for a handheld by the metaphorical C-lister team; great ambition that just couldn't be delivered on. (Though the wishy-washiness over whether to have a singleplayer mode didn't help it any.) On the other hand, I do think Metroid is best served by infrequent but extremely high-quality titles. The current setup, with Mercurysteam delivering on high-octane action-survival 2D entries (if they are indeed working on Metroid 6 like rumors suggest) while Retro works their magic with atmospheric and explorative 3D entries, feels like a great plan for this series going forward. I do want to see Metroid get to experiment again eventually, but right now what it needs above all else is consistency and time. If we have a slower release schedule, sure it wouldn't match the glut of content offered in the 2000s, but it also means each new release is a true event, the kind that warrants a spot of honor at the end of a Direct just like Zelda, and that might be just the ticket to get people to pay attention. (I do hope we get Echoes and Corruption fully remastered on the same level as Prime, though. And maaaybe a Hunters remake, pretty please?)
I would also love for Mercury steam and Retro to continue alternating entries in the franchise, I like having both 2D and 3D iterations and both teams clearly know what they're doing in those respective spaces. A great metroid game every 3-4 years would be perfect.
Only one game every 4 years is not good enough really. Yeah they're high quality but we should be getting yearly releases or at minimum every second year, like every other franchise
I would really love to see an "it takes 2" take on the franchise, a full Co-op Metroid with puzzles, or in an online Server(forge) worlds excess of Bosses with full squads of Samus-like bounty hunters competing for resources to complete missions, like a "Minecraft Dungeons set-up but Metroid with better graphics and less item collection.
We'll I'm hoping for Metroid Prime 4 to get a release date and new trailer sometime in June since thats when Nintendo usually announces all its big first projects. Its been in redevelopment more then long enough for that.
I've always been more of a 2D Metroid fan. I never played any of the Prime games, but as soon as I saw the Metroid Prime 4 logo at that Direct in 2017, I knew this was gonna be a big deal, and I was never interested in the Prime series to begin with. Recently I gave MP1 Remaster a try and I was blown away by the quality of it, so I am now looking forward to MP4. I hope it does really well both critically and sales wise. The Metroid franchise needs to come back with full force.
Now that you mention it I remember tons of rumors/leaks about a live action Metroid movie back then, but they disappeared entirely. I didn't realize there was actually a script at one point.
That script was made in the 2000s too but because it was during the time when Metroid was at its decline since their only success was Prime 1. Also, Halo was way more popular at the time and a movie for Metroid wouldn’t be a good idea for the time (especially how awful video game movies were). I think Nintendo preserve the script at their safe for future usage once Metroid becomes a success if Prime 4 can surpass Dread.
I was introduced to the series with Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion, and loved the series since. I even had fun with Other M even though it wasn’t as good as the other, I still liked it. I hope that after the success of Dread and Prime remastered we’ll get Prime 2 and 3 remastered, a remastered Metroid 2 and maybe some other remakes.
I feel like most of the time when I see Samus Returns mentioned, it gets shade thrown it’s way or it gets glossed over, like yea it didn’t do well at launch cuz Nintendo made a 3DS game after their ridiculously successful Switch was released, but it’s one of my favourite 3DS games and it made me a Metroid fan, it holds a special place in my heart and in my opinion, it’s the best looking 3DS game, also mechanically speaking, it makes use of all the 3DS’s buttons (base 3DS anyways) which I always like when consoles take advantage fully of their system, so ya. I think it’s awesome, and I hope more people go back to it or maybe they’ll port it to switch/switch 2 🤞🤞
This is a fair perspective, it's a good game, it's not my favorite Metroid but I enjoyed it and would totally buy a light remaster or ported version on switch, I don't want it to be lost to history
I think this time period was the decade of "experimenting" on the metroid franchise from Nintendo. They had something going on with the prime trilogy, so they were trying out different kinds of metroid content. I bet they felt confident in doing this for a while, but metroid other m told them they couldnt get away with anything. And so samus returns for the 3ds was a really "save" reentry for the franchise. I remember this decade really well, started playing metroid prime and fusion when they released, but I also remember not being really impressed with all the metroid content being put out, like "hunters"or "pinball" I would rather have Nintendo working on really polished experiences like Dread and the prime games.
That's a good point, some of the games did feel pretty experimental, but it probably became obvious Metroid wasn't like Mario where they could just crank out more endlessly. Personally I'd like Metroid to be like Zelda where we only get major releases every so often but they're a big deal and high quality. The current Switch pace where we get a big Metroid game every 4-5 years plus a remaster or something smaller in between would be perfect for me.
@@crywolfplays The problem is that Yoshio Sakamoto needed a third party company to make another Metroid game after Nintendo R and D 1 was shut down. He tried with Team Ninja, but succeeded with Mercury Steam.

It got especially more painful when they pulled the plug on AM2R, and Prime 4 is MIA to this day.
The next Nintendo Direct in June could be a vary Metroid focus Direct. Because they more then likely will finally show Metroid Prime 4 off as well show Metroid Prime 2 and 3 bundle pack and a trailer for Metroid Zero Mission as there big GBA release that month. With Metroid Prime 2 and 3 in July. With Metroid Prime 4 in November for the Nintendo Switch.
This would be perfect, zero mission on switch online is one of my top requests. A full remaster of prime 2 would be epic but I don't see that happening at this point

These are good points, I agree parts of Prime 2 felt rushed, though I think it turned out great overall. Prime 3 was also good but it did feel like too much time was spent on motion gimmicks that could have made the already good game even better. I'm glad to see you and commenters stating you enjoyed other M. I wasn't always online at the time and loved it when I first played it. The problem with Metroid is the vocal minority, who speak with authority. They like two games, Super and Prime 1. Everything else is varying degrees of trash to them typically because "its to linear" or "to hand holding" and have seen that argument applied to zero, fusion, dread prime 2 and 3, but they really hammer it home with other m (which does have a laughably bad story). I wonder sometimes if what they like about the series was actually intended. The skips and sequence breaking, in prime 1, remastered and wii they patch some of the breaks out, so I'm not sure it was intended. Which is why I wonder if they like Metroid or their idea of Metroid based on a few bugs. It's also why I don't see them ever enjoying a metroid movie. She won't be alone, and she will have to talk. I just know it will ruin their "idea" of what Metroid should be in the same way other m did.
Metroid Prime 4 is going to surprise a lot of people. Very likely that it will launch alongside Nintendo's new hardware. It's going to be a Breath of the Wild-level success for the series.
It started with such great promise with the incredible 1-2 punch of Prime and Fusion in 2002 and it slowly got weaker as time went on and then bottomed out with the awful Other M. The series looked dead for a long time and it was a real shame. Happily, that has turned out not to be the case, but Metroid has always been the odd one out among the big 3 in Nintendo (Mario and Zelda). Maybe it can't be helped.
Yeah I would agree the quality slowly dropped over the decade. I've always wondered why Metroid sells so few units out of the big 3, I wish the series could have a "breath of the wild moment" where it sells 10+ million units of a break out game....maybe prime 4 with switch 2 launch.

And if nintendo tries this style again and handles the story better so that all the nerds out there stop whining about it. This could be an S tier Metroid game. I'm still hoping for an Other M sequel some day
I remember being possibly a 5 year old child at the time of release and not knowing much about games, but seeing prime and fusion come out at once. I got both I want to say and due to my age the first prime game was too hard and fusion was too scary. We need more experiences like that in the gaming industry. If Nintendo never made other M or federation force we could have had maybe something similar last decade. I can understand their want to try and make an actual story game out of something that never had a direct story in your face, but that takes away from the magic of the game. And federation force was a disaster. Until nintendo pulls their head out of their ass we won't be able to have games like that for a while. Business is about taking risks, not suing your fans who only want to promote your product for their audience to consume so you can one day make more. Companies forget how people are once they provide a good product.
I hope they take their time with mp4, that'd be fine, Nintendo usually does. Mp2 remastered would hold me over for a long time, love that game, I think it's the most under appreciated metroid
You forgot to mention how am2r gave us hope while the franchise seemed dead, never forget what doctorm64 did for us, am2r is also better tahn samus returns in every way, but im grateful for that game as well since it paved the way for dread.
Content amount, no. Quality will depend on how MP4 does. Frankly with how long its taken (including the reset) it'll have to be absolutely jaw dropping for this decade to be on par. It's all contingent on MP4s success IMO.
Yeah my biggest concern is that it's been in development for so long and now based on very old hardware that it won't live up to expectations or feel modern enough, but Metroid prime remastered eased those fears quite a bit since in my opinion it looks as good as many PS5 and series S games even if it's not pushing as many pixels or as busy environments etc. some might think I'm crazy for saying that but MP Remastered on a huge OLED screen just looks insane for switch
Look, Other M is NOT a bad game. It is an excellent game. But it shot itself in the foot with awful cut scenes and inane storyline. You will cringe and roll your eyes throughout all story beats, but please do not skip this game.
I was a huge Metroid fan, it was one of the first games i got for the Gameboy and I played Super Metroid non-stop when it came out. I loved Fusion and Zero Mission and thought the first Prime game was pretty good, but overall, quality wise, most of the other games sucked. I Prime 2 was meh, Other M was terrible, I have no desire for pinball or the Hunters games.

Business is about taking risks, not suing your fans who only want to promote your product for their audience to consume so you can one day make more.
Companies forget how people are once they provide a good product.
MP4 won’t happen for another year. MP2 remaster possibly in between
I hope they take their time with mp4, that'd be fine, Nintendo usually does.
Metroid Prime 4 is Dead, Iv kinda moved on from it.
Would you rather want a metroid prime hunters remake or a sequel set before metroid prime 3 with ghor, Gandraya, and rundas? 🦧
I was the biggest fan of hunters since I don't do a lot of multiplayer gaming but it'd be cool to see something new that involves other bounty hunters
