Singer Featherweight Case Latch Replacemenrt
The backstory... I recently sold a Singer Featherweight to a friend who wanted a second machine for traveling. Unfortunately, the case of that machine had a broken latch, so I swapped the damaged case for the one from my personal machine so she could be ready to go on her adventures. Knowing that it would drive me nuts that I had a machine with a bad latch, I started looking for a solution...
Also - before anyone gives me crap about "damaging a chisel" in removing the plates, I have my woodworking chisels that I spent big money on that only see woodworking use, I have dovetail chisels that only are used in hand cutting joinery, and I have a bunch of cheap, flea market utility chisels that I beat the crap out of and abuse if necessary. I keep even my utility chisels sharp, and if I damage an edge, it's off to the shop to repair and sharpen.

A 221 for Lori - Timing, Needle Bar Height, Hook to Needle Clearance (and Grace Slick!)
Переглядів 53521 день тому
Once again, this isn't as much an instructional video as it is a "this is how I do it, follow along at your own peril" video. Oh yes... Grace Slick makes a cameo appearance at the end. In this video we'll look at the timing, needle bar height, and hook to needle clearance of the 221. If you have the "old style" 221, by all means, go over to my good friends Jen's channel "Sewing Machine Rehab" a...

This isn't as much an instructional video as it is a "this is how I do it, follow along at your own peril" video. In this video you'll see me dissect, clean, polish, and reassemble the hook mechanism on the 221. If you watch other mechanics work on 221 hooks, you'll probably find that I approach this a little differently, that's cool, everyone has their own way of working. I'm not saying my way...

Some major disclaimers:... This isn't as much an instructional video as it is a "this is how I do it, follow along at your own peril" video. My friend Lori mentioned to me that she was looking for a second Featherweight, one that had cosmetic issues, one that she didn't have to worry about when she took it traveling. I told her I would look through my collection of 221 machines. The result is t...

First, a huge thank you to Jen at Sewing Machine Rehab for alerting me to this auction this past Thursday. She knew of an issue I was looking for more 301's, so when she saw this one she messaged me with a link telling me that this one was real close to me. I went to the site, put in a bid and the next day at 3PM the auction went off and sure enough, I won! I made arrangements to pick it up tod...

What did I miss?
Very cool tool, I just booked the hands free version through your link. Thank you, I could have used this thousands of times…
This was great & I did watch it all the way through! I rarely wind bobbins on the machines I sew on. I keep one crappy (not a Singer) machine set up that I use only for winding bobbins.
I’m enjoying the comments and the discussion on this video. I own both machines and love them both. If I had to pick only one (Lord forbid), I’d probably pick a 99 simply because the price of Featherweight now is outrageous!
I enjoy seeing all the tools you have & how you use them. I’m a nail tech, and have found a lot of nail tools are small and very precise so they can also be used in sewing machine maintenance. I use similar nail files as you, but let me suggest that if you’re going to buy very many, it will be cheaper to purchase them elsewhere. Nothing against Sally’s, I buy some things there, but there are brick & mortar stores as well as online stores that have better pricing.
Be sure to save the broken latch. The spring inside can be used to repair another latch, with a broken spring. if you do ever replace the spring on another latch, don’t do a video. It would be way too much foul language!
My case is in about the same state of disrepair as yours. I’ve just decided to live with it, and not try to fix anything. I rarely take my Featherweight out of the house, so I mainly use the case to keep it clean. The handle is in such bad shape. I wouldn’t pick it up that way anyway, and here at home it doesn’t really matter if the top latches down or not. If it ever starts to bother me, I’ll just sew a little quilted cover over it. Once again, thanks for all the great info you share !
Hi Bob! I know this is an older video. I’m watching, so you may already have this info… at 22:20 in the video you mention the lightbulb is a candelabra style and you haven’t seen it in LED. I did find this: Chinnor Sewing Machine Light Bulb BA15D LED Bulb AC110-130V 400lm 40W Halogen Equivalent Push-in LED Light Bulb Double Contact Bayonet Base for Kenmore | Singer 15-66, 99, 201, 221, 222, 401 Sewing Machine (2-Pack). It’s working nicely in my machine & has a nice bright white light. Thanks for all the info you share, I spent most of the day binge watching your channel yesterday.
Thank you for this Bob. A fine video for those of us who are not obsessive compulsive about "authentic" parts. No reason to think that Singer wouldn't be using something like this if they still made these cases.
Great Tool Bob. Ordering one now!! thanks for the tip
Oh Mr. Fowler you’re a life saver , I’m a fan of clean and shiny machines and this video save form suffering, I manage to save a singer 66 it was said it was broken but after cleaning it it moved however when I got to the cleaning of the feet I didn’t notice the hight and I though I was done 😢 with your video I manage to get it right ❤ so that k you so much 😊
Looks like a good cheap option. Thanks
Thanks Bob
Yes a bit different but it works. I too have a broken latch on mine. I think I’ll try your process too. Great info Mr Bob! Always appreciate it
Is that case particle board or plywood? These old carry cases always make me nervous about the handle or the latches giving way. Or even the underlying wood failing so the fittings fall off.
Definitely not particle board, but it may actually be solid wood, albeit very thin.
Nice job. I didn't replace one of mine. I added one latch like yours in the middle. With mine, I thought I would not replace the handle but repair it, but I will wait to see what you do before I venture down that road. (I showed the case with the bad handle and just about everything on my channel). Thanks for sharing. And yup. With the fireworks. Keep those fingers. Have a wonderful Sunday.
Just stumbled into your channel. Sewing machines are awesome tools. I think your demo is to show the clamp and I find jewellery tools are handy in many situations. What really surprised me at first glance, "People actually rebuild a 15 class bobbin cases?" I moved on from sewing machine repair about 20 years ago after 30 years of doing it. (Did I just show my age?) It's great of you to show people how these things work and what to do if they don't. 1 of the most common problems I used to see was the needle in wrong. I always checked a machine the moment a customer brought it in for the needle, if it's threaded right to trouble shoot before they left it. With the needle in wrong, I'd tell them right away "Let me show you why it's not working. I'd turn the needle to correct position , Thread it up and sew away. I'd also show them the correct way to thread it. Sometimes people forget. Ever tell someone their machine was threaded wrong and they reply "I've been sewing for 30 years, I know how to thread my machine!" Haha. Side note, Anyone with a 3D printer..... Doesn't need the mailman.
Micromark carries one as a Universal Clamp, but they also sell a bunch of others in different sizes and different configurations. Thanks for sharing, though.... We like to see new gadgets and gizmos!!❤❤
A working latch is better than a broken one! Thanks for doing the research and sharing with us!
If you ever decide to re-cover your featherweight case with new exterior material, look up tolex, it's a vinyl material used for covering guitar amplifiers.
Don't try from inside it makes too much mess. Replacement screws need grinding down to correct length. The case is only a smiggin over 1/4in thick.
So satisfying! They look remarkably good substitutes - especially in terms of their size and general style. True vintage is all very well for an enthusiastic collector or featherweightophile, but for people who just want their machines for taking to quilt retreats and classes and so on, a case that closes, locks and looks nice and tidy with some money left over to spend on, dare I say it, yet one more perfect fabric, is a welcome alternative indeed! I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July - and that all your beautiful cats had the good sense to stay inside! (When I had my last cat he'd find a dark little corner in the house somewhere and make himself as little as he could - not easy for a Maine Coone - until it was all over.) :-)
What a deal! Wow! 🎉🎉 have to dig out my case from storage and check the latches!
I am currently working on a 221 case, cleaning it up and replacing the latches. Great video!
We use a vice like that for jewelry making and to hold objects for engraving. Great idea to use it for sewing machine parts!!
Used your link and ordered one. Thank you for the video
Looking at the comments seems I'm not the only one who has never seen one of these before.
What a sweet tool! Really helpful for other arts & crafts (gotta get my dad one for his model railroad).
Congratulations on your “stray”…I know you saw it and y’all just were inseparable!🤣 I just picked up a 1948, Godzilla, black side in a bentwood for $7.99 at Goodwill. No one even bid on her so she was a steal. But my question is how do you clean the black side pieces? The slide plates (which move freely!) have some rust spots on them.
I appreciate your posting this. I recently acquired a 201 in a beautiful cabinet at an estate sale. To transport it, I took it out of the cabinet, and the insulation on the wires simply turned to powder, so I knew I was going to have to do more work than I have done on a previous machine (a 503A). Watching these videos has made me feel a lot more comfortable about beginning the task. Thanks so much.
Thanks Bob, I'll have to acquire this!
Interesting!!! 🎉
I honestly thought I had shown this a couple of years ago... Oops... LOL
OMG that is so cool... that's a no brainer.
I'm 73 and never seen this tool - ordering one now - thanks Bob
What an odd tool! I’ll continue to add to my multi-year Amazon shopping list! Most recently, I added a third-hand tool for soldering. Next….alligator forceps. Oh, and I never used to buff my machine parts…until I virtually followed you. Thanks for adding extra work for me! 😂. Happy Fourth! Thank you for your service. 👏
I've got a machine on the bench I just can't bring myself to finish.......I wonder what my problem is? How you doing buddy? Great 4th.
Sometimes, getting motivated is tough, especially in hot weather!
Great Tool! Happy 4th of July! Stay cool!
Great idea, Bob. I have a watch case vise that’d probably work pretty well for that. Thanks as always
That too would probably work just fine. I have a watch movement holder that is a little too delicate though.
Thank you! Loved the polishing/'spinning tools'. Cleaned up my 1937 99 with a friend last weekend and without the 'spinning tools'. It was well worth the effort.
You operated on it like a surgeon would
I certainly don't want to conduct surgery on a living being, I can barely carve a turkey without it looking like something from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre! LOL
You mentioned we could use this same method for reconnecting the wires to the wire tubes if they were cut like they were in this video. Is that the best, or is soldering best there also?
I prefer soldering, but this IS an option...
@@BobFowlerWorkshop thanks! I'm trying to learn all the methods I might need to use.
I found this machine on the side of the road about 10 yes back. My mom serviced it for me like six years ago when I moved after it sat in my basement storage unit, I now have it out and finally figured out using it. But the belt seems.. dry? I think it needs to be cleaned and piled but it’s intimidating, so I plan to come back to this, thank you :)
Oh dear.. My 201-2 has been tingling for years, since it was serviced by a repair shop maybe 30 years ago. He messed up the bobbin case and said it couldn't be fixed and I should buy a new machine. I fixed the bobbin case proplem. But the machine had a slight tingling on the needle plate. When the light socket started having tiny puffs of smoke last year the plug was pulled and my hubby and I watched studied every video and blog how to rewire. We spent a lot of time studying and purchased all recommended (by Bob) gauge wiring, connectors etc. And then we took a good two weeks carefully dismantling, cleaning, rewiring etc. The motor had been opened (not by me) and the brass tubes were damaged so we had to salvage from another. It all went back together smoothly. Soldering was very good, things fit well. It sews wonderfully. But that soft buzz is still there. 😥 Should I look in the motor, light socket or power plug or all of the above? It has a new electronic foot controller. This is my ggmother's 1947 machine that I've sewed on since age 12 (fifty years) and I use it every day, I have a steady work flow. My husband can't feel it but I can. I wonder if there is any instrument that I can use to demonstrate what I can feel does exist? Thank you! - Dorothy
Get a multi-meter and check for current leaking to ground. There are a lot of good UA-cam channels that cover current leakage far better than I can.
whew, thanks for the video, currently cleaning an extremely dirty Singer 15-125, Celery. Unable to remove main shaft, but cleaned as best with krud kutter, triflow spray
How do I know what 15-series I have
There were aso many sub varients of the 15. This is a good place to start: needlebar.org/main/15chart/
Hey, Bob's your uncle.. I have a 285K. and the stitch length leaver is toast. the rod is bent the plastic face plate of the stitch length leaver is broken. long story short, I found the assembly used on ebay, but it's for a J and not a K. but they look the same. Have you ever taken the whole assembly off? I see after taking the hand wheel off, there is a screw that holds the slide piece on, part of the stitch length adjuster. I haven't found anything on YT. yet.. Just thought I'd ask you, because you really get into the machines.. "It's easy when you know how".. Thanks Bob.... edit to say,, I figured it out.. what a fiddly pain that was. works great.. now I can't get the needle plate off. rusty screws are not budging, I pb blasted for days.. still no budge. I do have Chapman set,, doesn't help. I think your 1st opinion of this machine was pretty accurate.. and, whoever designed the elect.contacts in that light switch.. oh my..
Great idea. I made one out of a piece of HDPE I had laying around. People could probably use plastic cutting boards for this, as well. It worked really well. I think a piece of 1/4" key stock would also work if you were careful. I can get a foot of 1/4" brass square stock for $3.53 / ft. at the local metal supply. I may have to make a formal tool out of brass stock turned down and threaded for a knob handle. It also looks like rewinding the stator on these motors would be extremely easy. The armature might be another story. I don't know how common it is to have one burned up.
Hey Bob, thanks for the great videos. I have a circa 1913 66 treadle with a broken bobbin winder (missing spring) that I hope to fix. The winder does not have a rubber wheel, instead it has a groove where the treadle belt goes. Is this correct, or is it just missing? I have researched this, and it seems some machines where made this way? Thanks for any advice.
Isn't the lead under a screw on the lamp socket? Will that screw cut into the wires now?
No, it'll be just fine. The wires are running through enough shrink tube and the screw is not pointed so it won't penetrate the wires. You don't crank it down, it's just set snug enough to hold everything in position. That was an excellent observation and a great question!
Is it possible to take the winder part - the part that spins against the belt or wheel and holds the bobbin - apart and swap it from a Singer 15 to Singer 66? For some reason, I've managed to buy Singer 15 winders TWICE on Ebay (sketchy sellers, unclear pictures, way too much hope) and I'm just needing to swap it out so the pin location changes and will fit the Singer 66 bobbins. Thank you!
