  • This is the last in this series on a Nightmare Potted Motor that has been on my bench this week. In this installment, we put her back together and make her run!

What a difference - it's hard to believe it's the same motor! (And I don't mind how many times you show us something, I always pick up new things each time.)

Didn't you mean to say "Aero Shell 7"?
    Lovely outcome as always!

No, it's actually closer to Aeroshell 5, though Aeroshell 7 works great too. I've been experimenting with both 5 and 7 - Still can't make my mind up which I prefer, they all work very, very well.

I was surprised you did not put the wicks in the springs first then grease them, just wondering.
On standard belt motors with brass grease ports I have used my soldering station "surface mount hot air" set to 100'c ish to help get the grease moving rather than running the motor a long time.
I did like the potted motor build, I have never done one, I bet I never see one in the UK.
One motor I had to replace the brushes and they were too big I needed 4mm so I filed down the larger brushes to fit.
The only internal motor I worked on was a Singer 760g the internal stator winding had a capacitor that ruptured, I just bypassed it and the motor worked well.
I do remove a lot of the old RF capacitors, how do you feel about that, my concern is possible sparking in the foot controller carbon disk pile ?
A lady friend of mine blew a capacitor while sewing and the machine went to full speed, it frightened her so much she gave the stinking machine to me. It now works OK, took a lot of cleaning to get rid of the "spray painted" electrolyte in the lower part of the machine head.
My dad back in the 1980 used a very large graphite brush to start the welding arc on his TIG set since the scratch start does not contaminated the electrode with steel or aluminium.
We repaired a lot of machines for cotton weaving and shoe factories. I used to repair a few propellers for speed boats.
all the best, I learn a lot.
    John

I go both ways with the wicks, springs first, or not. The idea is to get the wicks started, but it really doesn't matter if the springs are on first or not, it's still going to be a mess! The run in period on the motor isn't as much to get the grease moving as it is to wear the brand new brushes in to the shape of the commutator.

Hey Bob! Any more thoughts on putting together potted motor rebuild kits to sell? Love watching you work on these😊

Yes, it's something I still want to do, look for an announcement soon... as well as some other cool stuff...
