  • The care and feeding of the stitch length dial of the Singer 201 as well as many other models, especially the later model 15's as well as many of the Japanese 15 class machines of the 1950's and 60's.
As I mentioned in the video, I have sourced replacement fiber washers for the adjustment screw. Email me at argosybob@gmail.com for information.

Great explanation of how that stitch length regulator works.

I’m truly thankful I found your channel. I need to make a list of your videos as I’m going through my machines for the next step so that I can watch them again and again until I (hopefully) understand the process. Thank you for the effort and making it clear to see what it is we need to do. I didn’t know anything about the stitch length regulator.🙂

The collection of videos is crazy-great. So many techniques and details are elaborated to more fully understand the elements of these machines. 🤯

Fixing these machines, while not super simple, isn't hard to learn. If I can do it, so can you.

Aah, the penny just dropped for me, Bob! I've worked on a few of these machines (at least 2 anyway that I can recall finished, and a couple more I started and stalled on - ahem). While I knew what that part was to make the forward and reverse stitches the same length, I hadn't twigged how it works until you explained it. Thank you! (By the way - if you ever do find a way to get over here for a visit we'd be thrilled and you'd both get such a huge welcome...)

One problem of a potential visit to NZ... I understand there are a lot of hand-cranked 201's over there... I would have so many problems with customs, not to mention excess baggage charges! LOL

I'm the same Harlan - I've worked on at least 2, and I'm thinking 3 or even 4, of the 201 machines and they didn't have that little washer either. I had no idea, but it would explain why the paint was scuffed up along that 'opening' on them! What's the betting people in the past took the screw out, didn't even notice the washer, lost it, and wondered ever after why their paint job was getting scuffed when it never did before. :-)

That's because so many are missing! I'll have them available on my soon to be launched web store (along with a lot of other goodies)

I have one that covers the screw type, but it was shot a few years back and the lighting isn't great. It's on my list to re-shoot.

I thought that you press a button and the machine automatically does back-tacking. 🤔 Pfffff…. 😊
