  • Some major disclaimers:...
This isn't as much an instructional video as it is a "this is how I do it, follow along at your own peril" video. My friend Lori mentioned to me that she was looking for a second Featherweight, one that had cosmetic issues, one that she didn't have to worry about when she took it traveling. I told her I would look through my collection of 221 machines. The result is this machine from 1938. I think it will fill the bill.
In this video you'll see me use some tools and techniques that may raise quite a few eyebrows, such as electric impact drivers to loosen stuck fasteners. Suffice it to say, I know how to use the tools and am extremely careful. I am NOT advocating their use by inexperienced machine mechanics. You will also see me using stainless steel wire brushes (cup and straight) rto clean out internal components of the body of the machine. Once again, I have done this many, many times, and I have a lot of experience. Do not try to replicate this activity without proper safety equipment (eye protection) and don't do it fpr the first time on a machine you care about. If you want to try this, get a beater "parts machine" and experiment there first.

This was so much fun to watch! I love the way you had every tool at your fingertips. And the only thing that shocked me was the amount of thread in the hook area. Good grief! Perhaps the guy selling was chuffed with $200 because he'd heard it sounding like a broken egg-beater had got together with a coffee grinder and this was the baby!
I totally identify with why why Lori wants a 'travelling machine' too. I want to take a Model 12 with me when I volunteer at Alberton but I'm not going to take my 'best' one. I'd be too nervous letting visitors have a go on that and the whole idea is to let people try out the machine to see what sewing back in the 1800s was like. So I'm currently working on sprucing up one that's seen much better days. She'll still be nice, and is quite old being around 1870, but I won't want to cry if anyone gets a scratch on her or the decals get more worn over time. :-) It's funny though, as I work on a machine I get more attached to it anyway and by the time they're finished I'm like a new mum who thinks her plain-jane baby is the most beautiful things she's ever seen!!

Love this! If it works, it works! I’ve never had to use an impact due to fear, but seeing you do it gives me the confidence to do so! I also use wire brushes, and dremels, but if I’m going to use a brush on cast aluminum, I go for the brass one since brass is softer than aluminum. Great video! 😃

Great video. How “impactful”. 😳. FYI, I’ve never been able to disassemble the reverse-threaded component of the takeup arm lever. Thus, I thoroughly cleaned it, lubricated it, and then moved on. (We don’t win every battle. 🙂) Nice video! 👏

You could then take a Dremel to the screwhead slot and redefine it. I'm a fan of penetrating oil on just about everything before even starting work. Saves hassles.

Sorry, Bob, but every time I see the controls for your window fan I think of Kilroy watching you. Sans schnoz.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) the June 29th class is full up (we limit to 10). Liz and I will be doing another later this year. The place is Mouse Creek Quilts in Howell, NJ.

I just watched AndyTube throw a Singer 328K (with motor installed) in the shower. You can't scare me!
0.8 MUs right there behind that hook.
I don't know what solvents Kroil has, but it sure cuts through that varnish!

I saw him take a machine to the shower... I almost had another heart attack!
