Robbo's Highland lives
United Kingdom
Приєднався 5 сер 2022
We live in the Highlands of Scotland and love travelling in our campervan. We decided to make videos for our memories, but also because we hope our children and grand children will be able to travel in the future. Essentially, these are our home movies.
How we tour Europe drama free - Part 4 - Interlaken and a bit about vignettes (the road toll kind)
OMG! Is it even possible to travel by Campervan, Motorhome or Caravan without every day being a drama??? Of course it is. Tens of thousands of people have been doing it for donkeys years.

How we tour Europe drama free -PART 3- Not so much a camper van trip as an Aperol and Negroni sesh!
Переглядів 2,1 тис.Місяць тому
Touring Europe by camper van (or caravan/motorbike/motorhome/tent) is easy. It must be! We've been doing it and sampling Aperol all around Europe for years. We just want to show how easy it is.... touring that is.... although we do spend an extraordinary amount of time in bars!! I always did say that sightseeing always goes better after a couple of beers. Also....it seems it is now cheaper to h...

Like thousands of people we have spent many years touring Europe. We just want to show how easy it really is, and hope this will be helpful to anyone who has some doubts about it.

At least we hope it's drama free! It should be, we've been doing it for years. We really just want to show how easy it is, for anyone who has some doubts about traveling around Europe.
It's nearly time to take our Camper van South to Italy! We can't wait.

It's nearly the start of another European trip. This is a little about how we intend to make the videos, a bit about a couple of things we change out for touring (as opposed to Winter long staying) and a bit about how our new diesel heater has performed.
Our still under warranty camper van heater is out and a Diesel heater in. This is why and how much.
Переглядів 1,2 тис.6 місяців тому
Yes, after two camper van heater failures in less than three years we have decided enough is enough. Broken heating is incredibly disruptive so we wanted something we could fix ourselves in the future (if required of course!! Don't want to jinx it already!)
Spain 2024 - Part 8. Campervan/motorhome Winter long staying. All our limited knowledge in one video
Переглядів 10 тис.7 місяців тому
We just wanted to gather together all the bits that might be useful to anyone. The two big things that caught us out were how it wasn't as warm as we expected it to be in a January, and that we really needed some sort of entertainment for the chilly evenings. January is still like a UK Summer thought (apart from at night), which is perfect because it is cool enough to sleep well.
It's our favourite time of year, and our Whale heating has failed for the second time in 30 months.

We have two happy places. One is Winter long staying in our Campervan in Spain. The other is Campbeltown. This small town on the Kintyre peninsula somehow manages to be both ever-changing and never changing. Also our Whale space heater has failed again! Should we just cut our losses and fit a Diesel heater?

The journey home. We have broken our own record by starting to book our next trip (to Italy) before we've even finished this one! Oh, and there was a load of other stuff but it got too boring. Looks like ten minute videos are about my limit (much to everyone's relief I'm sure). Hahaha.
Spain 2024 - Part 6. WE'VE GONE HOG WILD! (by our standards at least). Tapas and Menu del Dia!
Переглядів 1,8 тис.10 місяців тому
We're on the second shorter part of our typical Spanish camper van winter trip. It's much busier in Cambrils, and the easy bus trips to Salou and Tarragona means we can cut loose a bit. Which for us mainly means trawling around Tapas bars and anywhere else we can find good (or cheap) eats.
Spain 2024 - Part 5. A short one even by our standards! We moved up the coast and the weather turned
Переглядів 1,6 тис.10 місяців тому
We packed up and moved our camper van up the Spanish coast, so took the opportunity to talk about how some of the gear we tried in Scotland worked in practice on a long stay. We had hoped to do a bit more in Cambrils for this video but it rained heavily and then the winds got up! We made enough videos back home in that kind of weather! We'll do better next video. The camping gear we looked at i...

More nonsense from us. But we do genuinely find that our time in the camper van in a quiet part of Spain gives us more peace of mind than we have experienced in 40 years.

This one is a little bit about the Spanish Winter long stay lifestyle, a little bit about the equipment we're using, and a little bit about the cost. (Mainly cost is about how much wine and beer you drink, but we're trying to dress it up as something meaningful).

While we are in the quiet part of our camper van winter Spanish long stay, we thought we would try and include a little about the lifestyle, the cost and the equipment we tried out back in Scotland in each video. Hope it worked!

Great video and I've subscribed. I'm 62 heading for retirement and looking forward a long term holiday, I won't be selling my home yet in East Kilbride. Thank u for the information.
Thank you😀 We just tried to cover all the little things that we were unsure of😀. Or things that just make a long stay more comfortable perhaps. Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Lovely People, love your video's. Thanks.
Thanks Billy😀 That’s really much appreciated. Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Hi Robbo, I'm 78 with arthritic knees and fancy 3 months in the sunshine ( Scottish Person ) living in Leeds. Love your advice . Thanks.
Hi Billy😀 Yeah that’s the thing, it’s good for the health as well. I’ve always had a bit of joint pain (just things worn out and broken due to working in construction). Nothing like the pain of arthritis of course, but even i notice how much better it feels to be warm in Winter. I think for the people much older than us (and where the travelling may seem like much more of a chore) the health benefits are perhaps the main reason for doing it. Hopefully the rest of the Winter here (we’re at home this Winter as well) will be better😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Just stumbled across this vlog. Absolute class !,
Thanks Murray😀 I think that was pretty close to a typical day for us (and most people really). Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
great, I am looking to buy one of their builds, now named argonaut 1V.
Excellent😀 If it is the 1976 boat, I used to have a large framed photograph of her taken during sea trials. Every now and again I would feel the need to tell the wife how it broke records in the years after launch and how she was a whaleback and gutting shelter seiner. Also I would sometimes tell her how a seine netter went about its business. The picture mysteriously disappeared some years ago😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Just have watched this vid after popping up on youtube. Great to see and thank you for your honesty. After a head injury that took a couple of years to recover from I totally get your outlook. We'll subscribe and wish you many happy trips x
Thanks Andy😀 It’s a shame that sometimes we have to go through some adversity to appreciate how lucky we are😀 We feel we’ve been pretty lucky over the last fourteen years or so, and so occasionally we get a bit blasé or start moaning a bit. And then we give ourselves a good kicking and remember how it could have been😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
We are hoping to spend the next winter in Spain, very useful tips. 👍🏻
Thank you😀 It is an amazing experience. Just not being cold is great😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Great informative video
Thank Ray😀 We just hope to show how easy it is really😀
Cheers guys
Thanks Patrick😀
Diesel heater are amazing I fitted one along side my truma heating It's so efficient ,best upgrade I've done in 25 years of owning motorhomes
Agreed😀 I think the other thing that is really working for us is being plumbed into the van diesel tank. We're going camping in -10 degrees. With our lpg tank full we would get about 70hrs running on the lowest setting. Half that on the highest. Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
That was lovely to watch and the honest information given ,thank you both and have a wonderful Xmas and new year 👏👏😊😊🎄
Thank you Graham😀 Merry Christmas😀
Always nice to watch your videos😊 We wish you a merry christnas and are sad not to stay with you as our neihgbours in moncofa Maybe see us anywhere on a campside again 😊 Heinke and Michael from Austria
Hi Heinke and Michael😀😀 It’s amazing how those stays become a little community😀. Also we tried these spices you gave us. We tried using it four times a week hoping it would make us as young looking as you guys😀 No luck. Hope the family is all doing well😀 Merry Christmas😀xx
What a beautiful place, just stunning. Merry Christmas, guys. May God bless you with a safe, healthy, and happy 2025. All the best from New Zealand
Thank you😀 And the same to you. I still always find it amazing that people on opposite sides of the world can now wish each other all the best😀 Merry Christmas😀
That looks such a lovely place ❤ have a lovely Christmas and all the best for the new year 😊 look forward to your vlogs in 2025 , take care guys , best wishes from Glasgow ❤
Thanks Sandra😀 That’s much appreciated😀 Merry Christmas😀
Well done and thanks. New season starts soon. Breezy in the 'sneck tonight.
Aye two bars on the fire, a book, a wee dram and an early night. Canny beat it😀 Merry Christmas😀
Stunning place so clean, but a bit pricey. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2025. Thanks for the vlogs. ❤Sheila & Gavin
Hi Sheila and Gavin😀 I never really thought about it when we’ve been there, but yeah we’ve never seen even the tiniest bit of litter😀 It’s spotless. And everything works. It’s like Germany on steroids😀 Merry Christmas😀
Very informative guy's, currently saving up for Switzerland 😂🇨🇭, have a good time at the festive 👍
Hi Gary and Fiona😀 You know the odd thing is that (like the Italian Lakes) Interlaken didn’t feel as expensive as it used to do (apart from the campsite price). Now it feels like your only paying a few quid more than you would in the UK where before it was real heart attack stuff😀 Still only a very occasional visit for us though. Merry Christmas😀
@RobbotheHighlander cheers 👍
Try Waze
Hi Stephen😀 Strangely enough I did try Waze as a backup this trip. Can't programme/shape routes, but I thought it was great😀
Great story and wandering about thinking back. I joined the Royal Australian Air Force as an apprentice fitter in 1975. As a country boy of 15yrs old it was a big deal to head off with 300 other boys. 1st night we arrived at midnight to find instructors shouting and ordering us about. We had tall boys, short boys, white boys, boys from all sorts of other communities, but we were all treated the same. 18 months of classroom and workshop training before being sent out to our first Squadron. This was were we really grew up being exposed to mature men of all ages and experiences. I must have enjoyed it 'cause I stayed in the RAAF for 22yrs 4 months and 3 weeks.
Thanks for sharing that Brian😀 I think it’s really important that decent people keep saying that we are all the same really😀 I think that anything where there is a clear objective has a way of bonding people. I worked on construction projects and one of my fondest memories is of sitting in a restaurant in Central Asia (one of the old Russian states). At the table were about 10 people. All colours and nationalities. Indeed some of their home countries were actually bitter enemies. We were all working on the same project. All anyone really cared about was how good you were at your job. All the things that in theory made us different were irrelevant. I’m glad I got to experience those things😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
@RobbotheHighlander yes. Going away on international exercises was a great experience as was living in SE Asia and Saudi Arabia...everyone is basically.the same...wanting families, safety and happiness.
Hi guys came across your videos and just find them so informative especially as your a fellow Scotsman I'm in Ayr, and I've just got a CV40, I'd love to see the mods you've done in your van mostly the extra insulation, did you do,some videos on the modifications ?? Now subscribe to your channel
Hi Jim, thanks😀 I think the closest we came to a mods video was the one on 23rd April 2023. That was just the little things we had done at the time. Anything else was just mentioned through all the videos. With so many people making really good videos about CV40 mods, we only mentioned that we had done it. In short… 1. We removed the back door panels and packed with recycled plastic insulation (from B&Q). 2. Removed the sliding door panel and put some of same insulation in there (although the sliding door does come with some insulation). 3. Covered the rear wheel arches and the floor under the settees with sticky backed 7mm foam insulation (which has a foil outer). We just bought that off Amazon. Because we leave the bed permanently made up we put 10mm foam on the floor in the middle (camping mat). We recently stuck the 7mm foil back stuff to the underside of the camping mat as well (if that makes sense). I think insulating the back door, wheel arches and the floor at the back made the biggest difference. I should mention the wheel arches insulation is over the top of the factory fitted insulation. On the 2021 vans it was just some sticky backed foam. It wasn’t very effective and was peeling off. I’m not on Facebook but Rhona is on the CV40 owners forum. Apparently that is really good for tips and stuff (if you’re not on it already). Hope that helps a bit😀 We didn’t really go into a lot of detail in our videos because we would just have been copying the other stuff that was out there really. Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
My wife loves my indepth explanations on all things aircraft.
Haha😀. And for some reason they don't seem interested!😀
You pair are as dry as bones , excellent keep it the way you’re doing it
Thanks Stephen😀 It’s probably due to being young in the seventies. Sarcasm as the main form of communication😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Hi Both - Loving the Videos so far - We are contemplating over wintering in Spain.. Could you tell us the name of the resort and site you did the long stay in Southern Spain..? - Also, was there a particular reason you chose that make & model of Van (Is it diesel?) - We are weighing up our options - Many thanks and keep up the videos.. Mike & Jacqui - Thornton, Lancashire 👍
Hi Mike and Jacqui😀 We normally split our time between Moncofa (Monmar) and Cambrils (La Llosa). Please don’t take that as a recommendation though😀 We like them (they are very different) but people have recommended campsites to us and we have not seen the attraction at all. It’s a big commitment to spend that amount of time in one place. Perhaps you already know the South coast of Spain, but if not I would try a few places for shorter times the first year. The van is diesel. We chose a Ducato because they (along with the Citroen relay and Peugeot Boxer…same van) are wider than other vans. That means that if you are under 6ft or so you can sleep across the way, which means you can leave the bed permanently made up and have storage underneath (and that design generally allows for a table at the front and for both front seats to swivel). When we were looking we also looked at other vans which felt far roomier inside. I realised it was because the other vans overhead lockers were much narrower. The wider lockers are more important for extended trips of course. Normally we find that at 6m long we (and perhaps another couple of vans on a site) are the shortest vans over wintering. People do it in 5m vans (with a big awning normally), but you don’t see it often. It’s all a compromise. A coach built motorhome or caravan I would say is better for over wintering, but we like the easy access to sites and pitches that 6m gives us. Hope that helps😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Hello again Brian & Rhona - Could I ask if you had the ‘Van v Car’ dilemma? - I’m hoping to retire in the next two years and we’re making plans for doing something similar to yourselves with the over-wintering in Spain - Ideally, I would like a van that could do the job of both as the cost of two vehicles would be prohibitive - Do you have a Car as well as the Van? - Be nice to hear your thoughts. Hope you’re both keeping well and enjoying the travel - Mike & Jacqui 👍
Hiya😀 We sold the bigger car we had (Ford Kuga) and bought a really small one (Hyundai i10). We couldn’t afford to run the van and the bigger car. If we had a 5m pop top van we would have no car at all. If we had to choose between van and car we would have gone 5m pop top and still overwintered with it. The 6m van is better for long stays and extended trips generally, but not so great to use as a day to day vehicle as well. I suppose it would depend on how much you use a car. I think if we mostly travelled on public transport and only used a vehicle occasionally we could ditch the car (if our van wasn’t kept in storage, which it is). However we would be a bit restricted. A 6m high top won’t go into a multi-storey car park or under a low barrier. Sometimes it’s not that easy to park in a busy supermarket car park (although much easier than with a bigger unit of course). Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀.
Thanks both - Looking forward to the next video!
Almost got through all your videos, two questions please, 1 how do you get on with language in these little tapas bars etc or getting off the bus in the right place and 2, I struggle and although I love beer I have to stick to wine, how do you keep so slim with beer and tapas? Kind regards John
Hi John😀 We have had great fun in places where absolutely no English is spoken😀. Google translate is the answer really. Just pointing works, but checking the Spanish for please, thank you, one, two, may we have, beer, wine and may we pay really helps. The Spanish will have a laugh with you if you try a bit😀. Being able to point your phone at any document (menus and bus timetables) and use translate is brilliant. I would say that (as well as English being fairly widely spoken anyway) Google translate has taken away language barriers everywhere😀 Staying slim...in truth I'm pretty moderate in what I eat and drink I suppose really. Although you wouldn't think so from the videos😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Excellent
Thank you😀
Many thanks for the update, we are learning a lot👍
Thanks Brian😀 It's all little things really, but things that maybe bothered us a bit at first...or we found out the hard way😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
I have never in two years of watching loads of camping videos ever commented, but I have just watched all your videos from your Spain trip a year ago. We retired 7 years ago and because we have a dog got a camper van very similar to yours, we have never driven in Europe but you have given me the desire to go. Except one of your videos when you stead at 63 you know you are near the end of travelling! I’m 74 and just about to start!! Do you think I have left it too late to start ? I think I’m pretty fit. Thanks John 😊
Hi John😀 Never too old😀 What I mean really is that we've been doing it since we were about 50 and after 13 years our trips are more about going to specific places rather than exploring. There are people well into their 80's cutting around Europe (especially wintering in Spain, because of the health benefits).I think it keeps people young really😀. We honestly wish we had it all to do again from scratch😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Thank you, would love to bump into you sometime Kind regards John

...its never too late ... All the best!!
Great locations although I'm not going to show the wife as this could bee very costly for me! Just a pity our M/H is 7m in length and I doubt if I cold get it down some of those roads. Starting to plan and book our sites for our 3 month trip starting in April to Spain and Portugal if we get the ferry direct to Spain as I don't have sea legs at all I normally drive through France. Look forward to your next video Drew & Linda🏴
Hi Drew and Linda😀 Honestly there are much bigger units go down that road (Lorries deliver of course). As with most sites you have to tell them if you are over 7.5m but since the re-modelling it is much easier. All the pitches have dividers between them now as well which is nice😀 It’s just the really big units that would struggle (probably not get on at all actually). I always think that these mega size units must be great to live in, but it’s really pretty limiting. Although with the sudden rise in numbers of the mega size units, on pitches with no physical dividers, we have found that some of them think it’s perfectly acceptable to steal a chunk of their neighbours pitch as well😀. They seem to think that as long as their wheels are on their pitch it’s okay to have their whole back end sticking into yours. Saw that twice on this trip😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
So lovely to see you again, very interesting video ,hope you both enjoyed yourselves
Thanks Jackie😀 It was great😀. What always gets me is that the best bits are never what you think they will be. Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Excellent video
Thank you😀
What a lovely journey and video of your wonderful trips previous and present, so true about prices,I could see you really loved the locations.I’m like you like to have something booked in advance 😊😊👏👏thanks
Thanks Graham😀 Even Switzerland prices didn't seem so bad this year, where in the past we would be in shock😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona 😀
I enjoy your videos. Real down to earth couple. Just like Kathryn and Steve from Field View Adventures with son Zak and lovely dog Bailey (Boo) looking forward in catching up on your videos xx❤🌹
Thank you Ann😀 That's always nice to hear. Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Worth the wait for the great content and sharp editing. End sequence was particularly beautifully shot. Passa al prossimo video
Thank you😀 I really appreciate that😀. Unexpectedly, this video lark has turned out to be a really interesting hobby😀 It’s like a constant circle of learning….shoot some video….edit…realise what you could have shot better or differently….e cosi via😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Lovely video makes you realise how much beautiful stuff there is out there to see. Thank you for showing us beginners how you do it! 🙂
Hi Ruth😀 Thank you. Thing is I really envy anyone who has it all in front of them😀 I wish we could do it all again from scratch😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Another great video, thanks for sharing all your tips. We got our van in September and have had a few weekends away in the UK, planning our first campervan European trip for next year. Have been driving in Europe for years but never in a Campervan, all your insights are really useful.
Thank you😀 It’s just little things that might ease the way really. I hope you have a great time😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
You're back! Thanks for your insight and tips for planning a tour. We're stuck with 2 week trips due to work. Maybe next year we'll be able to do longer trips.
Hi Brian😀. For me planning and booking on the move just got to be a real bind. One year we had booked all the way down to Southern Spain, but nothing on the way back. My thinking was we had plenty of time sitting in Spain to plan/book the way back. I think the way I felt that day in Spain, when I knew I had to go back to the campsite and open up a laptop was really when I decided we were booking everything before we left home😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Great stuff guy's, very informative & interesting, hope you guys are well, safe travels, cheers the noo 🍻👍
Thanks Gary and Fiona😀 That’s good to hear, because we want the videos to be useful for somebody😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Was thinking just the other day Brian & Rhona haven't put up a video up for a wee while lol and up you pop 😂 great video guys 😊 dont leave it so long next time 😊😊
Hi Sandra😀 Yeah, we’re not exactly prolific😀. This was a long time even by our standards though😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
loved it , keep them coming
Thank you John😀 It’s appreciated😀
Another great video, late? hell no and well worth waiting for! We have our own Ducato camper and just wish we had the confidence to do what you do.
Awww thank you😀. I really hope the videos have some use. Its all pretty easy really😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Great video guys, thanks for taking the time, looking forward to the next update.
Thank you😀 Even although this isn’t a job or income for us, I still get a bit annoyed with myself when there is a long time between videos😀. However we still want to put out something that’s as watchable as we can make it😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Good to see you again. It’s gonna be a long cold winter here in the ‘snek. Buckle up.
Aye and buses are few and far between😀 I was thinking about making a short, creeping through the undergrowth like David Attenborough hoping to spot the number 1 Culloden to Inverness😀
About time 😂 keep them coming
I know😀. I keep going over videos and thinking about a better way to do it or make it shorter and the time flies by😀 I’m going to try and do the next one within two weeks though😀. Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
I really look forward to following your travels me and my wife have recently bought a motorhome and look forward to going to Spain
You will have a great time😀. And I really do hope our videos help. It’s all just little things that took us a couple of trips to find out😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Hello, I m enjoying your series but I just can't help thinking why don't you save yourselves a lot bother and just take a flight to Spain from Scotland?you de be there in a few hours and would save the money of the expensive sea crossing with your van and all the hassle of driving all those miles as well as the petrol expenses
Thanks Debbie😀. It’s taken a while to get the next video ready, but should be in the next day or two😀 Part of the fun (and challenge) is the travel and having your own moveable home really😀. With Spain in particular we are there for over two months and visiting at least three different places. There’s just something about doing it under your own steam that appeals somehow….and having something to stay in that we know inside out rather than a hotel or Airbnb I suppose😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Really interesting and beautiful place to visit 😊👏👏
Hi Graham😃 Yeah, I'm glad we got to go more than once. If we ever won a ridiculous amount of money one of the old apartments overlooking the canal would be great😃 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😃
Chilly by comparison in the ‘sneck today.
Aye, we're staying at home this Winter. Seemed like a good idea at the time😃. Winter camping sounds great until you're actually doing it!
I love your videos, we are the same age but couldn’t be more different! We are in the very S of Britain but we on a similar path touring Europe. Your videos are required viewing. I also suffer from bites. Have you tried Avon So Soft? My problem is that I’m never able to cover every inch of my skin!
Thank you😀 We had no idea people would watch at all. Honestly, we just thought that making videos was better than leaving a dusty old box of photographs😀 We’ve never tried Avon. It’s popular up here because of the midges, but the midges don’t bother us too much. The odd thing with the mosquitos this year was that they were tiny. We’re used to hearing that little high pitched buzz and seeing them on your skin. This time you didn’t even feel them. The first you knew was when you felt that itch and the bump😀. Really odd. Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Enjoy these videos !
Thank you😀 That’s very encouraging😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
we were on fusina lagoon pitch 22 in jul this year - great campsite for the location but venice broke us after 2 hours lol - ridiculous amount of people - may be another time.
Hi Leanne😀 Yeah it’s kind of bonkers😀. I think in September it’s ok up until about 2pm or so. We’re really glad we went back a second time. I can’t imagine how busy it was in July though😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
