It's our favourite time of year, and our Whale heating has failed for the second time in 30 months.

  • We have two happy places. One is Winter long staying in our Campervan in Spain. The other is Campbeltown. This small town on the Kintyre peninsula somehow manages to be both ever-changing and never changing.
Also our Whale space heater has failed again! Should we just cut our losses and fit a Diesel heater?

It's great to see you both looking well. I love how your faces light up when you get to tarbert . Yes we're a resilient lot and your spot on with the humour and work ethic. A job was a job no matter what it was as we said hard work never killed anyone 😂. Yes go for the diesel heater you can plumb it into the van tank and they can even be installed in a way that will heat your water. I have seen it on UA-cam where a guy has done just that. Happy travels toonies ❤

      Thanks Eddie😀
And thanks for the links to the videos😀. We’re getting a quote for fitting this week (vans in storage because we have no room, and it’s hard to do any real work on it ourselves especially as the existing heater is underslung). The videos will help me to know what questions to ask though😀
Work ethic….I think what you said about a job was a job is spot on😀. We just got tore into it😀. Of course we always had that other side where “there was nae point knocking yer pan in” as well😀
      Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀

Definitely go diesel for your heating & hot water, fed from the vehicle fuel tank. It will be a game changer for you both. The one fitted to our van is Webasto & works a treat. I'm looking forward to your upcoming Euro trip & your lightweight options. Cheers for now.

It's a Webasto we're thinking about as well. Just the space heater (our water heater works and we rarely use it anyway). We're going to get a quote later this week😃
We've already booked three of the Europe sites😃
      Cheers, Brian and Rhona😃

We have an Eberspacher diesel heater in our VW T5 it was expensive but has been great, much dearer than a Chinese heater but I like fit and forget things. You tales of your friends at the shipyard reminded me of when I started working in the mid seventies in a paper mill some of the guys I worked with were WW2 veterans and ex POWs and had an awful time of it but had the time to teach us young lads so much about the job and life, some proper characters 👍🏻🇬🇧

These guys knew what real difficulty was😀
It’s a Webasto that we are getting a quote for. I noticed that a lot of people are telling you that the Chinese heaters are the same as Webasto/Eberspacher, often at the same time as they are stripping down the Chinese heater to try and fix it! I think it’s great that these cheap heaters appeared, as it’s made it affordable for anyone. I like fit and forget as well though. It seems to me that the expensive ones are more fuel efficient as well, which is important to us as we expect to have the van for at least another 7 years.
      Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀

@@RobbotheHighlander Eberspacher use a brushless motor that is more energy efficient they are also better balanced so quieter, the circuit board and all connections are water proof (ours is fitted under the floor outside) also the dosing pump is silent, I can only speak as I find but ours has never missed a beat in the eighteen months we’ve had it, fuel consumption is about five hours per litre when on low and about twice that on high but you can’t run it on high for long as it gets too hot lol ! We tend to set it to about 16*c at night and let it cut in and out as required. Installation was by the local main agent and cost about £1500 all in, the unit itself was about £1100 to buy and I considered it worthwhile to have it professionally installed for the safety and insurance implications. In summary expensive but worth it.

That's great information😃. I'm expecting to pay about the same (authorised workshop). I'm not sure if the problem with our current heating is the heater or the installation, but either way it's hard to live with😃

We've been ill the last two times. I think it's because we're suddenly on a ferry then mixing with people again (after two months of outdoor lifestyle). Still worth it though😃

Thank you both for sharing your trip to Campbeltown. It's a heartwarming reminder of the significance of family and the power of nostalgia. Despite the loss of loved ones, we can find strength in cherished memories and the beauty of familiar places. Definitely makes me miss my home a lot.

The only videos we feel a little nervous about are the Campbeltown ones😀. We genuinely want to try and express our appreciation and love for the place, and I always feel we could have done better. I think we’ll keep trying every year until we get it right😀

@@RobbotheHighlanderHonestly, I think you captured the essence of the place and the people perfectly. My husband was in the US Navy and we've lived all over in this country. There's honestly no place that even comes close to Campbeltown. I look forward to your next trip to the wee toon. Thank you both.

Fantastic memories of your shipyard time. My husband has just told me his Dad used to do quite a bit of work up in Campbeltown- he was a crane driver/operator for JD Whites🙂. Hoping to see something of Scotland this year,Campbeltown will have to be on the list now! Hope you find a solution to your heating situation. We have the Truma diesel/electric boiler which is fine (been a bit temperamental if on low amp hookup and you run it on electric on a couple of occasions) but great not worrying about lpg. Looking forward to your next video already!!
