We have a diesel heater in our van, can't even notice the difference on the tank needle the next day and it is very warm, using the diesel heater and ultra convenient because you fill up with diesel anyway travelling. Have you thought about slippers, we use them in our campervan and caravan whilst away, makes it even more cozy. We use an ecoflow delta 2, whilst off grid, even though we have a kettle for the gas rings to boil water. We find it more convenient to plug our 2.2 kw kettle in to the ecoflow, (the cheapest one in Tesco), it can boil over 10 cups of water within the ecoflow storage capacity, which is more than enough, whilst at a beach or a place if interest. We use a normal 3kw kettle, when on a hook up for greater speed.
Hi Steve😀 I think the diesel heater would also work better for us if we could run it off the vans diesel tank. I’ve not actually looked into it enough yet to see if the vans diesel tank would comfortably supply the heater for 40 to 60 days (or more even). Slippers, well funnily enough we just bought some a few weeks ago and as you say it’s brilliant😀. Rhona had suggested it a few times but I was like no no no😀 We have actually broken out the old trangia kettle (which fits perfectly inside our small pot). If we hire a Spanish gas bottle I’m intending to hand it back empty😀. Well, near empty. I’ll have a heart attack if I have to hire a second one just for a few days! Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
I must admit though, we cheated on our last outing, mainly because of the very long nights, this time of year in a campervan. We just stayed for a week at Invergordon as a highlands base, at Delny Highland self catering lodges. Very nice and at £330 for a week with the wife's blue light discount, not much dearer than a camp site and it catered for up to 5 sleeping if you want but there was only two of us. It was bliss surrounded by deer, highland cattle, horses a goose called Kevin and masses of bird wildlife in glorious natural surroundings. From there we went off each day in the campervan. We were very impressed and plan to be back there March at the same low season price.
Just subscribed and having binge watched your vlogs, thoroughly looking forward to the next Spanish trip as planing to do the same soon , keep em coming..
Thank you😀 It’s getting close now😀. I think we’ll have one more video in the Uk this month and the one after that will be in Spain. Hopefully the Spain videos might save you a bit of time and research before you do it😀 Cheers Brian and Rhona😀
Hiya, thank you😀 Quite often the camping magazines here seem to full of people taking trips to New Zealand😀 We definitely want to get a bit more into what it feels like to long stay in Spain. What it does to your body and soul if you know what I mean? I got a haircut this week and when I saw myself in the barbers mirror I just thought man I’m getting old😀 And I am, but I realised that every Winter we just start getting worn down and then we get to Spain and after a couple of days rest (after the travel) it’s like we’re 20 years younger or something😀. Well at least for a couple of months😀 I really hope you like the videos😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
@RobbotheHighlander bloody love your videos! Hubby wants a trip back home to Braemar, but when you watch what is going on in Britain, you kind of think twice. Getting older is a privilege not given to all. Look forward to your next video. Hope the family is well
Robbie definitely get a diesel heater I have the idea of running my own when I get around to fitting it , I'm thinking of mixing diesel and old coking oil to run it if it works for diesel engines it's just possible that it might work with the right mix. If not your chips are sorted 😂 have a wonderful time you too xx
Thanks Eddie😀 Yeah, I don't know for sure but it seems to me that the cheap diesel heaters are more able to run on different fuels than the really expensive ones. Perhaps it's just that people don't want to risk trying different fuels in the expensive ones😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Have a great trip , we love ard tower to and love the pizzas x hope to catch you there sometime, look forward to your Spain vlogs , safe trip x Helen & George , x
Thanks Helen and George😀 We haven’t tried the pizzas but everyone says they’re really great😀. We’ll be glad to start travelling to be honest. Our heating at home broke down about three weeks ago, and we seem to have spent most of the time sourcing new heating, waiting for it then installing it. It will be great to spend some time where the only jobs needing doing are in the van😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
great vlog Brian with energy costs rising, i think most people are looking for ways to keep the bills down even more so with people with Motorhomes and Campers. looking forward to your trip to Spain vlogs Safe Travels to you both
Thanks Kurt😀 I think we only had a couple of years when we didn’t have to really budget even on holiday. In that couple of years we found for us it was actually more fun to have to budget😀. Something to do with it being more fun to have a bbq instead of going to a restaurant and things like that. Being in a warm place, on a pitch and cooking up some food is like heaven for us😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Hi, that was very interesting! I’m beginning to wonder whether we should get a power bank and put the Ecoflow delta 2 in my Amazon basket this weekend, might leave it a bit longer yet!!! Happy camping, ATB Ruth 🙂
Hi Ruth😀 ooops sent my first reply too fast😀 Yeah we could really have done with a bigger one, but the size of the van and the space left sort of dictated the size. After we decided it had to be a smallish one the USB C port decided us on the River 2. Not sure how good the solar panel is though. It did absolutely nothing on a cloudy day😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Hi Robbo we very much enjoy your wee videos. A quick question "What size is the Remoska you use?" The gas info was very interesting. We put the silver stuff on our moho floor after watching your video. One roll from Aldi did the whole van, well nearly. We think its made a difference. Happy travels.
Thanks Michael😀 Our remoska is the 2l one they used to call the "standard", and we find it ideal for two people. The one in the van is an older model. The newer ones have a glass section in the lid. My understanding is that the originals (many years ago) had a glass section and there were some issues with the glass breaking. Our one in the van was the next generation without the glass, and the newer ones have gone back to glass (presumably improved). We have a newer one at home with glass and it's been fine😀. The glass is handy for keeping an eye on things😀. Insulation - I think also we are surprised by the huge reduction in road noise, but we only had the little 600 X 400 mats down before😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Just a thought I assume you will be travelling via Dover (ferry) or Folkestone (Eurotunnel). You could stay at Canterbury Park & Ride which has an Aire without electric. £8 for 24 hours.
Thank you for sharing that😀 We're actually going Portsmouth/Santander this time, but that's really useful for future trips. We didn't know about Canterbury. Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Enjoyed this, we are thinking of travelling up to Scotland for Christmas and sleeping in our Berlingo can you recommend any sites with decent facilities that might be open. Usually we go to the SW Scotland, but happy venture further if need be. Thanks for your hard work.
Thank you😀 In December we tend to just use Ardtower, the Scone C&CC site, Moffat C&CC site and occasionally the C&MH club sites at Strathclyde park or Edinburgh. The other one we would use around Christmas is Invercoe (at Glencoe). It's under new management (and so was closed when we would normally go) but I think it was opening around 23rd December. That's really scenic, with a supermarket and pubs within walking distance. We felt that their toilets were a bit chilly in Winter (warm toilets being a big driver for us), but perhaps that has changed. Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
Great to hear about your gas consumption, first time I've had any numbers for a frame of reference. I'm a full-time vanlifer and recently installed a diesel heater for the coming winter as it was brutal without last year and I chose diesel mainly because I can fill up the same as the van. I use about 6 quid of diesel a week running it for about 4 hours a day heating which feels ridiculously cheap to me. Hopefully that won't increase too much as it gets colder. I'm curious to know if you have any thoughts about relative cost or convenience. Cheers!
Hiya😀 The price of lpg seems to vary a lot in the UK. A couple of days ago we paid 98p a litre, but we’ve also paid £1.68 a litre. I think for the same hours per day we would be about the same as you at the lower price (and much more at the higher price). However we have a whale underslung space heater and a separate whale underslung water heater. We are on the second space heater and the water heater won’t work unless you unplug and reconnect the power cable every time you stop. I think they are way too unreliable, too hard to do much to yourself and way too expensive to replace (and the warranty we have is only two years). Even though they are underslung I think the hose assembly coming into the van and the air intake port (also inside the van) take up as much room as an onboard diesel heater does. It seems to me you can now get a decent diesel heater at a fair price and actually take it apart yourself. Next time our whale breaks down I’m taking it out and putting a diesel heater in😀 Cheers, Brian and Rhona😀
@@RobbotheHighlander I reckon the gas makes more sense when you take hot water into the equation. I personally don't have the need. Yeah, this diesel heater was just over a hundred quid and I've taken it entirely apart and back together again in under 25 minutes, looks super maintainable as beyond the pump and fan there are no moving parts. And both of those are off the shelf components. Cheers for the great reply and enjoy your time in Spain, Eric
Hi James😃 You can get them direct from ACSI on their website. We get ours from Vicarious books, who tend to get them first in December for the following year. Both the big UK camping clubs used to do them as well...not sure if they still do. Cheers, Brian and Rhona😃
