TRELEAF - 3 Styles Reviewed - How Do They Stack Up?
Hi Dave. Another great class 😊. Happy Thanksgiving 💕
I have the same pots and all my plants died. Now I know why. Thanks
I'm SO glad you shared this! I have been slowly transitioning my plants into those exact green silicone pots. I'll be "pulling their pants down" as you say, immediately when I get back to SC. (With family for Thanksgiving.)
Go to a thrift store and get your very own butter knife. You'll be glad you did. That's what I did and I'm very happy with it.
Boy, what a hat. My dad had a beautiful hat collection. I am reminded of him when I see your hats. Thanks for the good information on those pots. I have recently started to use clear pots for my Hoyas; good to be warned. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Kathleen.
Hi Dave. Do you mind if I ask where you get your basalt pots? Thanks! I love your videos. They are always educational. I like videos about life and other things too, but many plant channels are not at all educational anymore. You talk and are educational. :D I've seen you in FB Hoya groups and I can tell you are like me and love researching.
I'm glad I watched your video and listened to your honest opinion on the pots. I was considering purchasing those exact pots. I will pass on them now. Thank you for making this informative video.
I did pin a comment that may help explain the problem!
@@soberplantguy It was the first comment I read. 🙂I love watching your videos they're both informative and entertaining.
Dave, I cannot thank you enough for just STARTING your videos rather than going off on a long, annoying introduction and taking 5 minutes to talk about what you are going to talk about....rather than just talking about it 😂 always appreciate the honest reviews!
You know, when I edited this I thought "This 36 second intro is a little too long" 🤣
Hey Dave, I have had fantastic luck rooting in fluval with some pretty thick stemmed Hoya and it’s very quick. I tried tree fern fiber as well, it was the same plant a Hoya Obovata, tried the tree fern for a couple of weeks, nothing. I pulled one cutting out of the tree fern fiber and put in fluval within a week I could see roots on the side of the cup. Still nothing in the tree fern fiber.
Interesting! I’ve used both, and had pretty decent luck with them. Not everyone likes it, but unless I have a really dehydrated plant, I kinda prefer popping them into the normal substrate. So many good ways to do it 😊
20 seconds in and I can’t focus on what you’re saying because I’m too distracted by the BEAUTIFUL hat atop your noggin!! The satin band is absolutely gorgeous. 10/10 hat choice. Now to try to focus and watch the rest of the video… 😂😅
Thank you for noticing my brand new hat!
"Whether he dieth by musket Or by pot." page 1
🤣 I do remember you reading that to me way back when….
There is a reason your channel is my absolute favourite when it comes to plants. Your honesty is at the top of the list. It's not like you act all 'judgy mcpants' about your experiences. I am so heartbroken for you in regards to your recent struggle. Some plants I'd be a little sad to have to start over, but my Black Cat ... I would cry. I felt that first cut LOL 🤢 Your outlook and what you did with your plant is an educational lesson for us. Thank you for sharing.
Wow-thank you, Sonia. That means so much 😊
Love love love the H. shepherdii… so underrated. Wasn’t one I was seeking initially either but it was the Covid era and I was buying whatever Hoya I could get my stir crazy mitts on! So easy going, so graceful in its own way; incredible subtle scent. It really is gorgeous once it takes off. Win win! Happy US Thanksgiving! 😊
It’s already so pretty! And thank you 😊
New hat!
Maiden voyage 😊
So, I had to look this up on Google. You are absolutely right about the mold. “All silicone should be dried thoroughly after each use and stored in a dry area to prevent mold.”And the silicone on the pots are unlikely to be food grade as they can also leach something called Siloxanes.😱 Hopefully your Black Cat can be restored.
Ahhh ... thank you so much!
I LOVE the Sheperdi.
Really cool plant!
@@soberplantguy Forgot to mention. After dumping about half a bottle of peroxide into my mealy cover Baltic blue a couple weeks or so ago I have not seen another. Maybe too soon to tell. Fingers crossed. The peroxide drench did not seem to affect the plant in any negative way.
Phew I'm glad I didn't buy those pots, as tempted as I was I passed them by so many times at tractor supply looking for regular plastic nursery pots.
I pinned a comment that explains it!
o i am so glad you told us about them pots I was going get some not now … sorry you had to restart you black cat but now the pot is nice and full and it’s going to be beautiful. It’s on my wish list. thanks for the wonderful video. Can’t wait for the next one.
Thank you, Laura! I pinned a comment that helps explain it 😊
We appreciate your honesty. Thank you for sharing your opinions with us and the reasons why you feel that way. Very helpful for us newbies. 😊 Happy turkey day.
Thank you!
Wow - I wonder if the silicone “sweats” & doesn’t dry out?? Totally appreciate your honesty Dave, please never change 😊😊
I pinned a comment from a viewer that may explain it!
Interesting why people get offended even when you shared your experience with proof. Happy thanks giving to you and your wife!
Thank you! Have a safe and sound holiday yourself, and always great to hear from you 😊
I'm so thankful for you honesty ❤️ hope you feel better! Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
Thank you! I'll get some rest and be back to my usual 70% 😂
Hi Dave I love your Fedora 👌🏽very sharp you wear it well. I’m a hat Gal myself a lost fashion. How can you go wrong with Hats and Plants 🪴 thanks for the thanksgiving eve video was a nice break from cooking prep 😬. You and your family have a Great Thanksgiving many Blessings 🙏🏽🦃. Stay warm. ✌🏽
This will be my favorite comment--because I *just* treated myself to that hat 😂 and you noticed!
Good Treat , 😉 I must confess when the video started I had to comment even before I watched the whole video lol the Hat court my eye. 😎👌🏽 STYLIN 🪴🪴
@@Diane-ex1os As a fashion person, you must have cringed a little with the flannel 🤣
With the PureCrop1, for me, it’s not about plant influencer and peer pressure, per se. I thinks it’s more of a YMMV thing. I put it directly in the reservoirs of Hoyas that had roots mealies and left it there for a couple of days before removing and rinsing. And it worked - the root mealies died in all but one Hoya in 2 treatments. Sorry that your purchase caused root issues that wouldn’t otherwise have happened. I felt your heartbreak on that black cat cut
Great minds at work here--I was thinking exactly the same thing just today. This is a great tip that I'll share. Thanks so much for the comment!
I have a bilobata and did not know it could sun stress so beautifully 🥰
I have shown that plant several times, small as it is (though it has grown sooo much). It's a definitely a low-key favorite ☺
Honest reviews are appreciated!! I love myco and put on all of my little plants. I use a little spice shaker with a flip lid - then flip the lid back in place. I have two of them in my supplies. One is for root stimulator and the other for my myco. Also Miro rocks and so does Betsy Begonia. I don't understand ugliness from viewers. Not their place. <3 Have a happy Turkey day! At least you aren't the turkey anymore!! :-) You found the issues and those pots suck!!!!!!!!!! dog gone it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you! And yes, glad to have identified the problem -- eventually is better than never 😆
At least you found the culprit. But that sure does suck! I wonder why the silicone bottom causes that issue. It's very good to know though. I will never buy those pots!
I'll never know, but I forgot to mention that we're talking about a dozen or so plants, so pretty conclusive (as far as I'm concerned anyway--I'm certainly not doing any more research on the subject 😂)
Hey Dave🙋🏽♀️, Don't change. Honest reviews of products are welcomed. Everyone should understand, as you have mentioned, it's based on your growing conditions, care, and environment. Then, individuals can decide what works for them. I'm glad for the review on the nursery pots because I was on the fence with those. I'll keep looking😂 Wow on the Black Cat, gorgeous. Painful root cut. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 🥧🍂
Thank you, and you as well..!! I should have mentioned, the vast majority of people are always, and I do mean *always*, so sweet and kind in the comments. It's so great.
Now you’re using your wife’s lasagna pan as well as the butter knife?? 😂
I was going to say the same thing! 😂
I'm absolutely out of control 😆
@@RachelPeterson0218 Hi, Rachel!
You really do give me a lot of laughs - so appreciated 😂😂👍❤️
@@heatherstephens9295 This is really all I care about. If people new to the hobby learn something, that's cool, too 😂
I love Miro. He just tells it as he sees it! Caring for plants is expensive and I want to spend my money carefully. I'd much rather have influencers be honest. It makes it so much easier to decide where to spend my cash! Your opinions are appreciated, Dave!
Oh, and that Black Cat is fabulous!!!!!!
Thanks, Faith! I haven't forgotten your about your planty request, btw
I should have added my above comment to this one 😂
I think, "Cat piss but worse." is an accurate description of the flowers. I'll double check, next time I'm at the store though.
I really hope …. not 😬 let me know!
Did you take that glass bowl from the kitchen, like you did the butter knife? Asking for your wife.
Settle down 🤣😖🤣
@@soberplantguy I'll take that as a yes.
@@tubegoob1 Ummmm.... I take the 5th
You look fabulous dahhhling! 👌💯😻😁
I knew it!! 😆
Your recent "misery" video was absolutely the best! It saved me from the temptation of buying another plant later that day. Don't worry, it wasn't a hoya.😉 Keep it real for us, Dave!
Oh no!! I mean, Yay! 😆
Loving the channel, Dave! Would it be possible to leave the name of the plant up longer while you're showing it in future vids for those of us with older eyes and slower fingers? 😂
For once, a reasonable request 🤣 You bet
@soberplantguy Thank you so much.🪴❤️
@@lisabarnes5340 Let me know how I did on the currently video 😊
Thanks for this video! I keep having the problem of what to do when a vine reaches the top of the arch trellis. It seems like when I wrap the vine down, it doesn't push out leaves or even dies off. Is there any solution to this? And is it only certain types of hoya that do this? I saw that your solution is to use a cylinder type set-up like your wire mesh trellis, which is something I might start doing!
That is a good question 😆 On all trellises, I trie to let the vine go as long as is reasonable before I turn it downward--with plenty of room for the vine to point back up. Some do okay this way, other, not a chance. I think it's why you'll see a lot of mature plants with wrapped, bare vines. The new growth on my australis, for instance, tends to hide a lot of that. Cheers from Iowa City!
Dave, could you please advise how to transfer a Hoya from pon to coco husk? I’m chicken s@&t to do it because of all the “Hoyas will throw a fit” saga
I wish I were a better person to ask. I've never done it. If it were me--and don't be me 😆--I'd make that transfer, then keep it reasonably moist during the acclimation. But ... Basie Plants moved many of his Hoya out of PON and made a video. I could have led with that if I'd remembered..... Cheers from Iowa City!
@ ty!
Thanks for sharing part of your collection.
Thanks for watching!
congrats on your 8 i have 13 and never looked back btw where do you sell hoyas at? keep up the good work!
Hey, thanks! As for sales, I've been doing it through email. I had no idea how much interest there'd be when I started this little channel. So, next year I'll have something much more organized lined up. Be well, friend
I've been sober almost 7 years and plants have helped me so much.
@@Skincareslug that's great news, it definitely keeps us busy, plants help us heal.❤️
Hey, hey! That's fantastic 😊
I would caution about the dollar tree square cups, because I did the same a few years ago and drilled holes in the bottom.. like even the same amount of holes. Kind of freaky. But I used it for my lithops and they are awesome for that and adorable but I had a lot of issues with tipping them over, over the years. I still have a few but because I had them outside as well, and also cleaned them whenever I repotted, the plastic did get quite milky and ugly and also brittle. However. They are amazing for a short time and I think it's cool other people found the same idea from seeing them in the store. Just be wary that they tip over very easily. So I started putting them in a container where 10 could fit snuggly.
Good heads up. I’m pretty used to tippy little prop cups, so if they aren’t in a prop box, they’re in a heavily weighted little glass. Cheers from Iowa City
I do have a question for you, I saw that most of your Hoya's are in Terracotta. Is there a reason why you use those?
And basalt! I prefer them visually, for one. But I find them easier to grow in during our frigid winters when our house is often quite cool. In other words, that they wick water works better for me. Cheers from Iowa City!
I’ve always been a plant lover, but not great at keeping them alive inside my house. My husband bought me several calathea which didn’t make it very long…then he brought home a philodendron Birkin. I loved it so much and I started really learning how to care for it. 600+ plants later…I still love that Birkin.
Hold the phone. 600+??? I guess you got good at keeping them alive 😁 It's nice to have a large collection, look back at some early basics, and know that they are still some of our favorites. People not happy with those--the chasers of the next 'it' plant (and the next, and next, and next)--will never be as satisfied with their collection. Humble opinion submitted 🤣
Congratulations Dave! You're an amazing, honest, and inspiring person! Love all of your videos. One of my favorite plants and easiest to grow is also my staghorn fern! It's ginormous and growing only in spaghnum moss outdoors in the California bay area. Let's keep 'growing' together!
Thank you! And the timing of this video.... My stag has grown sooo much this year that there's no way it can over-winter where it used to live. Today is Strategy Day for closing down the plant porch, and relocating that big boy 😁 And yes, let's keep growing together in every way!
Love this video, lots of good information. May I ask where do you get all of the information for these hoyas.
Thank you! powo.science.kew.org is an excellent recourse, as is Doug Chamberlain's site Vermont Hoyas. Happy researching!
I'm sooooooo excited for all the new varieties at Lowe's, I wasn't planning on going out, but after seeing what Lowe's has, I can't resist. Thank Ashley 😊
I'll assume this one was for Ashley's video--but nonetheless, I hope you find some cool plants on your journey!
Once the trellis is full do you chop off the vines?
I typically let it grow quite long, and then gently drape/wrap it and clip it to the trellis, or another vine. That Australis has been wrapped many, many times. Hope that helps 😊
That Sarawak is beautiful! Do you still water weekly in the winter?
If the substrate dries out at the same rate, I do. Some plants are getting watered *more* often because of the drying, furnace heat (think small pots). So, in the tent for example, there are plants that will remain on the same "schedule" all winter, and some in larger pots that may not need to be watered quite as often. Most will, though. Cheers from Iowa City!
@ thank you! It’s nice to know bc yours are so beautiful!
