I live in central MN and I’ve had about 8 of my established hoya in my cabinets rot in the last couple of weeks. They were all in clear orchid pots and I check the roots every time I water. There were no issues the last time I watered. I think the temp going from 50ish with sun to below freezing and overcast suddenly triggered it. In the winter the cooler night time temps causing the humidity in my cabinets to spike from around 65% up to 90% (this doesn’t happen in the summer) and the coir mix hasn’t been drying out as fast. There also seems to be more condensation trapped inside the orchid pots lately, which could certainly be a low temp + high humidity issue. The ones in semi-hydro and living outside my cabinets all seem to be unaffected.
That's so interesting. My tent acts in the exact reverse with furnace heat. But this is *exactly* why cookie-cutter advice is pretty much useless 😁 Thanks for the thorough comment!

I’m glad you like your shepherdii. It’s was one of my earlier Hoyas in my collection, simply because it was available in a store. It just started blooming this spring, and it’s my favorite bloomer so far. I like the smell enough that if it was perfume I would wear it. And I like the little bell-shaped flowers. I think they are nicer than the button-shaped blooms lots of Hoyas have.
Dave I am so glad you posted this. I have had the same issues with those pots. I even posted a bad review on Amazon where I purchased them. The mold is bad and the roots rotting is so real! I have trashed every one that was in my greenhouse. I truly hope you save your babies!! 💚💚💚💚💚
So many people have said the same. A good friend told me that she just checked her pots and, yep, full of black mold, or whatever it is. I've never lost so many plants.
@ I am so sorry!! Loosing them breaks our hearts and wastes our money. I am planting all my plants into clear plastic bags it’s so I can watch roots, see pests, see exactly when we need water etc. now my massive ones are In other pots. These I have had for 8-9 years and they tolerate me and my shortcomings.
Love love love the H. shepherdii… so underrated. Wasn’t one I was seeking initially either but it was the Covid era and I was buying whatever Hoya I could get my stir crazy mitts on! So easy going, so graceful in its own way; incredible subtle scent. It really is gorgeous once it takes off. Win win! Happy US Thanksgiving! 😊
More accurately, I'm just a plant guy sort of mad at those pots (okay, infuriated). I lost as many plants as you, and a whole lot were in the process of going down. I saw on Amazon that they sell very well.
I am so glad i found you! You are me favorite planty guy! You are in my neck of the woods (kind of) so your content is a lot more relatable! Thank you for being you and sharing your journey with us all! Where do you sell your cuttings? I love your type of hoya!
I think those pots are typically used for potting on seedlings after they’ve germinated but before they are transplanted outside, may be 4-6 weeks. The silicone base is there to push it up and out easily. I don’t think they are meant for long term house plant use. My best educated guess is the silicone base moves/adjusts to fit the shifting settling soil, thus it continues to shift, eliminating any porosity in the base as time goes on, as you previously mentioned about coco coir. Without the porosity, air cannot move through and mold & rot develops. The stiffer plastic pots do not adjust and it is harder & takes longer for those pockets to fill in. That’s the only thing I can think of that may be going on. 🤷♀️ Take it or leave it.
Could well be, but the manufacturer gives no indication that these are only to be used temporarily, so who knows? Be well, Amy, and thanks for the nice comment 😊
Just found your channel and enjoying going through your videos! As many said, I was eyeing these pots and you saved me. I only have 5 Hoyas but I’m obsessed. Your Hoyas look amazing. Thanks for your content. 😊
Wow--thank you! As for those pots ... cannot believe how many people are reporting terrible results with them. Awful, awful, awful. Wish I could take that purchase back 🙃
@@soberplantguyDo you have a special place where I can ask about a problem I’m having with one of my Hoyas? I have a Krimson Queen that I just purchased a week ago at Home Depot that I repotted into a chunky mix that has been developing sunken in spots that turn dark on the leaves. I can’t find anything on this online. Do you have any recommendations?
I'm glad I watched your video and listened to your honest opinion on the pots. I was considering purchasing those exact pots. I will pass on them now. Thank you for making this informative video.
Hey Dave, I have had fantastic luck rooting in fluval with some pretty thick stemmed Hoya and it’s very quick. I tried tree fern fiber as well, it was the same plant a Hoya Obovata, tried the tree fern for a couple of weeks, nothing. I pulled one cutting out of the tree fern fiber and put in fluval within a week I could see roots on the side of the cup. Still nothing in the tree fern fiber.
Interesting! I’ve used both, and had pretty decent luck with them. Not everyone likes it, but unless I have a really dehydrated plant, I kinda prefer popping them into the normal substrate. So many good ways to do it 😊
We appreciate your honesty. Thank you for sharing your opinions with us and the reasons why you feel that way. Very helpful for us newbies. 😊 Happy turkey day.
o i am so glad you told us about them pots I was going get some not now … sorry you had to restart you black cat but now the pot is nice and full and it’s going to be beautiful. It’s on my wish list. thanks for the wonderful video. Can’t wait for the next one.
Ack! It totally sucks that you're going through that, but glad that you ID'd the problem. I don't really understand why people get their noses out of joint about an honest review. It is not a personal attack on them or their growing methods. Sounding like all 56 of my years, I think that people are a little too influenced by "influencers." It's totally okay to keep using a product that is working for you even if it isn't working for someone who reviews it on social media. Freedom of choice is a wonderful thing. I've been using Pure Crop I for several months now and have had a good experience with it. I'm going to keep on using it. I did decide to make some modifications after Miro voiced his concerns recently, but I didn't chuck it just because you didn't love it and Miro has some concerns. I'll keep it in mind, but will continue to do what has been working for me. (But I won't be buying the silicone-based plant pots. haha.) Hey, Happy Thanksgiving, Dave!
This is the only correct reaction 🤣 Doug Chamberlain says that terracotta pots are a poor choice for Hoya. Well, sir ... 😆 And I'm going to keep using the PureCrop1 I have, too. I just find spider mites on a lowly green carnosa. Blasted 'em but good with it. And it will absolutely take care of it. (And Miro didn't have it quite right that PC1 is "just corn and soybean oil" as you know. Pretty fancy processing they do, and most importantly to me: it ain't greasy!)
I shouted the f and the s word when you showed that silver dollar plant! My family is preparing for Thanksgiving and they told me to stop yelling curse words.
Hi Dave. Thank you for this video. After watching I looked at my Hoya and realised some had problems. Not the pots but I hadn’t repotted when I got them. Turned out pots big and roots small! You made me brave and I restarted a couple. Some though have this weird cloth round them - it’s porous but thick with some roots coming through. I sacrificed the roots of one plant to get it off and started again. My Glabra has much better roots but tangled in this cloth. Should I be brave and cut it off sacrificing the roots? All plants from this one grower have it, which means restarting them too. I realise you are busy but any advice greatly received. Jean
*In theory* those cloth plugs will deteriorate over time. Hm. I carefully remove them, or as much as makes sense. The roots I’ll grow fine as long as most aren’t confined within it. It a very standard practice, and not a big deal. Cheers from Iowa City, and congrats on your bravery!
Darn I’m upset to hear about those silicone base pots. I bought some expensive Bootstrap Farmer seedling trays with that type of bottom and I couldn’t figure out why they were so difficult to clean the black stuff off the bottoms. Didn’t think of it as actually being black mold 😱!! Now I’m afraid to use them. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I appreciate your honesty and self deprecating humour. Makes me giggle!
Hi Dave. Do you mind if I ask where you get your basalt pots? Thanks! I love your videos. They are always educational. I like videos about life and other things too, but many plant channels are not at all educational anymore. You talk and are educational. :D I've seen you in FB Hoya groups and I can tell you are like me and love researching.
Thanks so much! As for the basalt pots, the national chain Flowerama carries them, as does my local nursery. For ordering, so far I've only seen them offered wholesale. Which seems very weird. I really appreciate your kind words.
Doggonit I have had plants decline in these as well. Out they go tomorrow ! I have enough of a learning curve and have restarted so many Hoya recently. Good news is though I am getting better at propagating.
I bought a bottle of liquid Myco & inoculated all my plants two days ago. When I woke up yesterday, they were reaching for the sky! Im anxious to monitor the effect on the plants. I really like the look of the Black Cat!!
That's an additive that I never should have cut out of the rotation. I ran out, and got out of the habit. I have no doubt that 'Black Cat' will be back for more ... and more ... and ....
@ It’s my understanding & correct me if you know something I don’t, but from my research it seems as if they only need to be inoculated once or twice. Once the mycelium has formed (7 to 10 days) it will continue to grow. I was planning to give them another dose at the next watering and then not again until a repot. Am I wrong?
@@GreenWitch1 I've never done it more than once, so I'm not the person to be talking about this--I had no idea people do that 😆 At least for this product, they don't mention that in the instructions, but now I have something to look up!
At least you found the culprit. But that sure does suck! I wonder why the silicone bottom causes that issue. It's very good to know though. I will never buy those pots!
I'll never know, but I forgot to mention that we're talking about a dozen or so plants, so pretty conclusive (as far as I'm concerned anyway--I'm certainly not doing any more research on the subject 😂)
With the PureCrop1, for me, it’s not about plant influencer and peer pressure, per se. I thinks it’s more of a YMMV thing. I put it directly in the reservoirs of Hoyas that had roots mealies and left it there for a couple of days before removing and rinsing. And it worked - the root mealies died in all but one Hoya in 2 treatments. Sorry that your purchase caused root issues that wouldn’t otherwise have happened. I felt your heartbreak on that black cat cut
@@soberplantguy Forgot to mention. After dumping about half a bottle of peroxide into my mealy cover Baltic blue a couple weeks or so ago I have not seen another. Maybe too soon to tell. Fingers crossed. The peroxide drench did not seem to affect the plant in any negative way.
Wow silicone ! No silicone for me whatsoever. Had a hankering for the black cat and I bought one off etsy...it was in peat and I could not get all the peat off the roots. I really hate peat...not cocopeat.

@@Wubblyt Well that was a lot. And thank you for reminding me about the hydrogen peroxide. I ran out, and forgot all about immediately after the video. I am planting all my plants into clear plastic bags it’s so I can watch roots, see pests, see exactly when we need water etc. now my massive ones are In other pots. These I have had for 8-9 years and they tolerate me and my shortcomings.
@@bethadamik8014 Well, sometimes those shortcomings are what makes us a little interesting 😁 You have a good system set up there. I love it!
It’s already so pretty! And thank you 😊
I have the same pots and all my plants died. Now I know why. Thanks
Oh no! That's horrible....
Well that explains why 10 of my plants took a dive and than kicked the bucket. Thanks for the info on the cause of death. You are the plant whisperer.
In that case, you are freezing today 🥶 I’ve been selling plants through emails, but next year I’ll have a little better system. Goals 🤣
It definitely is a cold one! Keep us updated! You do an amazing job, love the plants you show!
@@LeahSimone-b6k Shoot me a pic over to soberplantguy@gmail.com and I'll be happy to take a look. I'm no guru, but happy to try and help.

I'm glad I watched your video and listened to your honest opinion on the pots. I was considering purchasing those exact pots. I will pass on them now. Thank you for making this informative video.
I did pin a comment that may help explain the problem!
@@soberplantguy It was the first comment I read. 🙂I love watching your videos they're both informative and entertaining.
I sooooooooooo appreciate your opinion on products. Please continue because you are saving me money.
That’s great to hear!
So many good ways to do it 😊
You look great Dave! Don’t worry about the lighting. This video was a turkey day treat ❤
Oh, good! Thank you!
Your chapeau looks fabulous. Haley thanksgiving Dave. 😊
Thanks, you too!
We appreciate your honesty. Thank you for sharing your opinions with us and the reasons why you feel that way. Very helpful for us newbies. 😊 Happy turkey day.
Thank you!
The Black Cat is stunning!😍 Please share updates on its progress!
We're more at the point of ... try and stop me 🤣
o i am so glad you told us about them pots I was going get some not now …
sorry you had to restart you black cat but now the pot is nice and full and it’s going to be beautiful. It’s on my wish list.
thanks for the wonderful video. Can’t wait for the next one.
Thank you, Laura! I pinned a comment that helps explain it 😊
I shouted more effs and jeffs at the Black Cat root reveal! My family is pleading with me to be more prudent with my language!
🤣😂🤣
@@cooperbrown6761 And .... my work here is done 😎
Ahh never seen them before. Thank you so much for your time. Stay warm
I cannot believe how many people have had terrible experiences with these. I figured people would just comment that I was watering too often...
Another great video. Thank you!
Thanks for taking the time--I really appreciate it!
The George Clooney filter worked! 😉😊
This is an *awfully* generous assessment 😆
Doggonit I have had plants decline in these as well. Out they go tomorrow ! I have enough of a learning curve and have restarted so many Hoya recently. Good news is though I am getting better at propagating.
That's the spirit 😆 As for those pots and all the plants I've lost/had to restart, I've never seen anything like it. We are not alone, it appears.
I’ve got a sherperdii. I love it. Well I love weird looking plants.
Weird and beautiful. It has really taken off!
@ Always be learning. Let me know what you find out.
Interesting why people get offended even when you shared your experience with proof. Happy thanks giving to you and your wife!
Thank you! Have a safe and sound holiday yourself, and always great to hear from you 😊
With the PureCrop1, for me, it’s not about plant influencer and peer pressure, per se.
Great minds at work here--I was thinking exactly the same thing just today. This is a great tip that I'll share. Thanks so much for the comment!
I LOVE the Sheperdi.
Really cool plant!
I have a bilobata and did not know it could sun stress so beautifully 🥰
I have shown that plant several times, small as it is (though it has grown sooo much). It's a definitely a low-key favorite ☺
Phew I'm glad I didn't buy those pots, as tempted as I was I passed them by so many times at tractor supply looking for regular plastic nursery pots.
I pinned a comment that explains it!
Wow silicone ! No silicone for me whatsoever.
Had a hankering for the black cat and I bought one off etsy...it was in peat and I could not get all the peat off the roots. I really hate peat...not cocopeat.
Peat? Who still uses that product, and whyyy?? I do not miss the days of that stuff going hydrophobic at the drop of a hat (so to speak 😁)
Love the new hat❤
Thank you! It wax its maiden voyage 😊
I’m liking the bilobota ( I know my spelling is wrong but you didn’t have the turned on the time I write this. ) but it’s stunning

I remember it being about also becoming interested in Hoya Shepherdii recently because of seeing a proper picture of the flowers, which encouraged me to add taggs to the Hoya flower pictures that I started to put on Insta to keep track of when they bloom…
And something about being sorry that this has happened to you and thanking for the warning…
And wondering if you hydrogen peroxided the rootballs of those plants (some of mine like to abort their roots after hydrogen peroxide)
And hoping that you would find some rest to recharge your energy
I think that was about it 🤔🌸

@@Wubblyt Well that was a lot. And thank you for reminding me about the hydrogen peroxide. I ran out, and forgot all about immediately after the video. Of course 😆
I cannot believe how many people have shared their silicon pot stories with me. The review on Amazon are mostly pos, but I wonder if those were left right after using them? I don't have a single plant doing well, including the ones in ambient now that I've taken a closer look. Yikes.
Thanks for the well-wishing, and showing up! Oh, oh!! And the sherp flower--gorgeous! Yesterday was my first time seeing one. Just lovely indeed.
@@Wubblyt Oddly .... I don't. Just bizarre
Just this morning I was thinking that I'd never seen the flower--and WOW. I love it!
