I got a Sunrise last year that arrived on the struggle bug but I got a ton of growth this summer so I'm hoping to prop her over winter so come spring she's a voluptuous chic.

I probably picked the wrong plant to try to prop a wet stick from (Cutis Porcelana [spindly vines]), so that was a big ol' fail for me, too. I use a soil-based mix, which works well for my full-grown plants, but hasn't been great to prop in. Miro showed the "damp perlite in a ziploc bag" method some time ago, which has worked out a lot better for me. I don't propagate very often, so I don't have prop boxes. Fern recently showed using a small clear acrylic box with perlite in it to prop alocasia corms. I bought one and am going to try to start hoya cuttings in that instead of the ziploc bag. I think it will allow me to place the cuttings a little more mindfully than I can in a baggie. I've been procrastinating chopping my SMS June, but now I'm excited to try it with the new box. Regarding the "growth tip blood bath," I tried to force my Australis Tenuipes vine around a round trellis once. The plant is right next to a window. The vine snapped and sap splattered all over the window. After the obligatory cussing, I had to laugh at the hoya "blood spatter." It wouldn't take a CSI team to point the finger at me for that one. haha.
Ah, yes. The old "Careful ... careful ... SNAP splatter POP" 🤣😂🤣 I'm a much bigger fan of propping in the boxes. Leaves seem to always be touching the plastic bag and melting on me. If you use a seed mat, be aware that it will drastically increase the water raining down on your plants if you moisten the perlite. Have fun!
@soberplantguy No mat. My house isn't the subarctic like yours. Haha. I will put the box under lights, though. For the baggie, I blow air into it like a balloon before I zip it, so there is no touchy-touchy. 🤣

Nice guide! Hoya aff. Lambii is so gorgeous isn’t she! Hoya aff. Lambii and Hoya Peninsularis (Perak teddy bear) look similar to me leaf wise, just different colours. Your reasons for propagating are so different from mine, so interesting to hear 😊 Since I don’t prop for selling (well I sell the props sometimes but thats not why I cut bits off of my plants) Ill only propagate when a part of the plant “looks too bare” or when the plant gets too big and I don’t want it on a bigger trellis. Ill wait with propagating if a plant is about to flower… or if there are new leaves that haven’t hardened off For prop medium…. Still love the moss+perlite as it has a 99% success rate for me…. (it is a pain to peel it off of the roots though) Think you have convinced me to try an airy mix for some thicker stemmed fast rooters someday soon 🌸 (Never used a seedling mat, but I guess the cabinet stays warm enough) About prop boxes…. Yes they definitely root faster in higher humidity… But… for people who will not put their Hoya in a tent or cabinet after taking it out of a prop box…. The slower rooting in room conditions might be better as it avoids the acclimatizing shock? 🤔 The more hardy (succulent) Hoyas… you can chop the roots of a plant and reroot that entire plant in one piece (in room conditions even) That accidentally happened last year with a too harsh root mealy treatment on some of the windowsill Hoyas. Rerooting took a while, but they survived and bloomed again this year. Those pins/clips/strawberry forks are so handy! I also use them on the side of the stem of my few mosspole plants to guide them straight up (they like to grow to one side)

I did kinda skip over other reasons to prop, but I figured people can figure out why they want to chop a plant on their own 😆 As for the prop box acclimation--good point. And as always, one I wish I'd thought of. Ah well. But I typically/always start opening up the box to let air circulate and/or dry it out. Maybe it's only a little at first if its dry (lets say, for example ... ALL of Fall and winter). So I haven't had a hard time there. But that wasn't the case with the tent plants, as you saw 🤣 Mass protest.

Exactly right. If it's moist, it virtually impossible to push in those thicker stemmed Hoya (at least in the mix I use), and hard to get the substrate to "settle" around the thin stemmed plants, if that makes sense?
Dang, that would have been good to address. Next video, I guess 🤣 The prop boxes keep the "soil" very moist, which is why after they are firmly rooted, I start cracking/ and or opening the box, depending on the ambient humidity. Once they are truly rooted little plants, I keep them slightly moister, but start treating them as plants. I back off the water slowly to avoid dry rot. And I've had some experience with that 🙃
Thanks for the education. Relatively new to Hoyas. I need all the info I can get. All the vines on the Jennifer and Hai Phong are brown at the tips. Maybe not enough water, Also moving them under T8s., about 8" away.
That could be the reason. Humidity is also a factor, oftentimes (or a sudden change, aka my tent video day). If the tips touch the light, the heat can do it, too. Good to hear from you.
Oh my God... I have the exact same cups from dollar tree that I drilled holes into for my lithops So crazy to see that haha. But I will say that plastic gets really poorly milky over time and scratched. As a temporary prop pot, it's perfect.

Maybe I need to get a prop box. And a heating mat. Really the only place to put a prop box would be by my sliding glass door doors that fade east. Or add another grow light there.
The Hoya Merelli is gorgeous!! Hahaha There are people that like to leave your house. I am so not one of them. Other than to go help out a friend a mile away getting lunch for him a couple times a week and one emergency trip to the vet for another friend I have not left the house since mid Aug.. Tomorrow is the day and I am so dreading it. It is one of those must do trips. Winter is closing in on me here and this will probably be the last big stock up until spring. I am using an aquarium to prop hoyas in for friends. And some babies to fill in my one stem mother pots. I guess I should get a heat mat. I have had good success so far with out one but my house does get cold at night.
@@soberplantguy Well I have been working on building up my needed supplies to get me through winter for a couple months with each trip to town. It is 90 miles round trip. Not a big deal but I HATE leaving my house so this is a big deal for me. I have a list and the four places I have to shop are close to each other. I am NOT a shopper so I hit the store door and grab exactly what it on my list and I am out of there. The only thing that delays me is to check out the plant section if there is one. LOL And NO I do not need more plants.!!! But I still have to look. I am a sissy driver and refuse to go if there is one flake of snow or the threat of it or FOG!! I have a low but 6% grade for 2 miles each side mountain to go up and over coming and going and it terrifies me when slick. I also have to shop for my two dogs and 5 cats. I come home with a heavy load. But once I am home I can physically crash for the next day or two and I am so blessed to live in this tiny town. I love my little paradise.
@@shadesofidaho You couldn't pay me enough to live in a real city. I have forests and cornfields either within walking distance, or a very, very short car ride. Not quite as rural as what you have going on, but still quite lovely.
@@soberplantguy Yah my city is only 200 people as of last census. Many of us are older so we have lost a few since that #. It is about 10 miles to the forest because you have to drive around the farmers fields. Maybe half that as the crow flies. Corn wheat and alfalfa are the main crops here. And of course cattle. LOL My street is designated cattle drive rout to summer forest service grazing. One more coffee then time to get on the road. It is only 28 degrees now so I hope the roads have dried from yesterdays rains.
hoya wet sticks... ~shudders~ 🥴 that's so interesting you found rooting powder didn't speed up rooting! I found it helped the really woody stems get going but never did an experiment to compare
wet sticks--the less said, the better 😆 That's really interesting. I was just (weeks ago, fine) talking to my grower friend and we would both *always* prefer the woodier stems because they root so much faster for us. One size does not fit all, it turns out 😁 Thanks for watching a channel beneath your pay grade, once again!

@@soberplantguy mine has lasted over a year since I always for get to use it. Since I haven’t chopped yet I have use it (only rarely) only on transplants after getting a new plant.
I rooted mine directly into the substrate with noooo problem at all. I really do reserve perlite for plants that are floppy/dehydrated and so forth. I wouldn't imagine you'd have any trouble whatsoever 😊
@@soberplantguy the cutting did. Opened the box and it smelled so bad. Then I wondered if I should have had holes but I see people do this with no holes for 100% humidity.
@@christinev3861 I did a (small) box with holes on the top, and that wasn't a great idea, at all. Maybe some on the sides? I'm really not sure. I have thought about making one with holes for a transition box. Like, when they are good and rooted and growing over the winter, somewhere to continue that growth until Spring, but without that wallop of humidity, which starts to be a problem with my substrate. I'm glad I had this talk with you--I'm going to make some of those *today* 🤣

The Hoya Merelli is gorgeous!! Hahaha There are people that like to leave your house. I am so not one of them. Other than to go help out a friend a mile away getting lunch for him a couple times a week and one emergency trip to the vet for another friend I have not left the house since mid Aug.. Tomorrow is the day and I am so dreading it. It is one of those must do trips. Winter is closing in on me here and this will probably be the last big stock up until spring.
I am using an aquarium to prop hoyas in for friends. And some babies to fill in my one stem mother pots. I guess I should get a heat mat. I have had good success so far with out one but my house does get cold at night.
Oh, yeah--great way to prop! Good luck on your journey. You must *really* have to plan for a trip like that. I'm certain that I'd fail.... somehow lol

@@soberplantguy Well I have been working on building up my needed supplies to get me through winter for a couple months with each trip to town. It is 90 miles round trip. Not a big deal but I HATE leaving my house so this is a big deal for me. I have a list and the four places I have to shop are close to each other. I am NOT a shopper so I hit the store door and grab exactly what it on my list and I am out of there. The only thing that delays me is to check out the plant section if there is one. LOL And NO I do not need more plants.!!! But I still have to look. I am a sissy driver and refuse to go if there is one flake of snow or the threat of it or FOG!! I have a low but 6% grade for 2 miles each side mountain to go up and over coming and going and it terrifies me when slick. I also have to shop for my two dogs and 5 cats. I come home with a heavy load. But once I am home I can physically crash for the next day or two and I am so blessed to live in this tiny town. I love my little paradise.
@@shadesofidaho You couldn't pay me enough to live in a real city. I have forests and cornfields either within walking distance, or a very, very short car ride. Not quite as rural as what you have going on, but still quite lovely.
@@soberplantguy Yah my city is only 200 people as of last census. Many of us are older so we have lost a few since that #. It is about 10 miles to the forest because you have to drive around the farmers fields. Maybe half that as the crow flies. Corn wheat and alfalfa are the main crops here. And of course cattle. LOL My street is designated cattle drive rout to summer forest service grazing. One more coffee then time to get on the road. It is only 28 degrees now so I hope the roads have dried from yesterdays rains.

that's so interesting you found rooting powder didn't speed up rooting! I found it helped the really woody stems get going but never did an experiment to compare

That's really interesting. I was just (weeks ago, fine) talking to my grower friend and we would both *always* prefer the woodier stems because they root so much faster for us. One size does not fit all, it turns out 😁 Thanks for watching a channel beneath your pay grade, once again!

Interesting, I didn’t know about your experiment with the rooting powder. (I have the same kind). I always forget it so low I won’t feel guilty.
Again, one person, one experience, but I wouldn't buy it again.
@@soberplantguy mine has lasted over a year since I always for get to use it. Since I haven’t chopped yet I have use it (only rarely) only on transplants after getting a new plant.

How would you root a Pachyclada?
I rooted mine directly into the substrate with noooo problem at all. I really do reserve perlite for plants that are floppy/dehydrated and so forth. I wouldn't imagine you'd have any trouble whatsoever 😊

@@soberplantguy the cutting did. Opened the box and it smelled so bad. Then I wondered if I should have had holes but I see people do this with no holes for 100% humidity.
@@christinev3861 I did a (small) box with holes on the top, and that wasn't a great idea, at all. Maybe some on the sides? I'm really not sure. I have thought about making one with holes for a transition box. Like, when they are good and rooted and growing over the winter, somewhere to continue that growth until Spring, but without that wallop of humidity, which starts to be a problem with my substrate. I'm glad I had this talk with you--I'm going to make some of those *today* 🤣
