👋 Dave - thanks for this. Tbh it’s something I dread delving around the roots (probably because I make a mess 😂😂). But now I know in no uncertain terms it must be done, I shall do it 🫣 Your channel is doing really well - congratulations 🥳 🎉🥳 It’s the great content & your hilarious personality.
Ah, thanks, Heather. And you can pretty easily/carefully pull the plant out without disturbing the roots much (unless, like mine, there isn't much to mess with 😆). Go for it!
Could you do a video on how you treat/what you use to treat pests? I can’t seem to find a good video on how to treat for flat mites on Hoya.
I did this this one: ua-cam.com/video/Zew88V5rdOg/v-deo.html For flat mites, PureCrop1works well, but it’s expensive. Not a fan of sulfur, personally. But it works, too. Cheers from Iowa City

IHey Dave! I purchased a very pretty philodendron type with the reddish hairy Stem from Home Depot. About three months later I noticed it wasn't looking right. I changed out the soil it came in, cleaned the leaves, etc. Then one day I saw webbing and the newer leaves were falling off and older leaves were looking weird. Yep, saw those spider mites! I trashed it. I have several philodendron and never had that problem so I'm glad it was in an area alone. Now that Hoya KSB01 is a beauty. I love the smooth leaf, dark margined hoyas over the veiny ones. So far mine is holding up. Can't wait for those 2 leaves to become 3, then I'll feel more confident about it . The dark spots on the leaves, I'm not sure inconsistent watering is the only problem but yes it doesn't harm the plant it's just not attractive. I just cut up and propogated a Hoya I don't like because it's slow and new leaves stay tiny, the coronaria, 3 years old. So hopefully it will improve. (I'd luv to see Doug C make more appearances) CONGRATULATIONS on the views🎉🥳 👏! Algorithm is working for you. Keep up the pace, stay true to you and your opinions and experiences! Look forward to your next! Dee, NY
We need more normalizing of trashing plants. Pest infestation on a plant that doesn't really mean anything to us--goodbye. If I ever see root mealies again, that plant would have to mean the world to me not to end up in a pit fire 🤣
I was just telling someone how I do exactly what you described here with some slow growers. If it's healthy and I'm tired of waiting ... chop that vine. Chop that plant. Repot it ... do *something* 😊
As always, Dee, great to hear from you!
Finding the best zone for my 32 species of Hoya has been an ongoing effort since I started in May. And now the seasons are changing so I'll probably have to start over again. 😮

Would this situation be more common with cuttings that didn't get a strong roots system in the very beginning? I have two plants(?) that are like this. They were cuttings that I had a very difficult time getting them to root. Thanks
@@dianecaruthers966 I'm too sure on this one, Diane. I root very few outside of the substrate they are going to grow in permanently, and I'm just careful to keep it fairly moist while the root system is developing. In theory, that makes sense to me, but .... dunno for sure.
I know it's messy, but I love 'lifting the skirt' or 'pulling down the pants' of a plant when the roots need an inspection. Being a novice, tho, I'm never too sure of what to look for! If I don't see anything moving, don't notice a smell or the roots don't pull off easily, I figure everything is alright. Out of the dozen Hoyas that I have now, two just look at me and refuse to grow. I'm just about ready to throw one out as I'm beginning to hate it. The other I'm still hopeful so we are having a 'staring' contest to see who's going to win. Saying all that, I look forward to all the tips that you share from your experience and know that my knowledge is growing. Thanks, Dave!
I have been there, and am currently there with some plants. Hugs
If there is a vine a stagnant plant (and I'm confident that there's no underlying problem), I'll snip it to induce growth. Sometimes I'll repot a slow grower, and that is enough to kick it into gear. Sometimes I wait. Clear as mud?

Yeay, a new Dave video! 🥳
And it deals with my current hoya dilemma, too!
Four Months ago I bought a couple of hoya cuttings and all of them have produced new growth, except the kanyakumarianas.. 🤔 I sprayed the cuttings with 70% isopropyl alcohol and 3% Hydrogenperoxide two times im case of mites. Nothing.. 😒 The roots are great though. 🤷🏼♀️

Usually it's by month six I'm like, okay, pal, something's gotta give here. I love that saying, btw. Gonna steal it ... now!
Everyone should grow plants how they want to, and different things work for different people! That’s the beauty of The UA-cams I take little bits of knowledge and Frankenstein them together in a way that works for me. In my experience cuttings that turn into fossils are usually waiting to die 😢 , sadly.
Ever the optimist, I think I caught this at the eleventh hour! (Hey, it helps me sleep.) And of course you're right--take what works, leave the rest. Heck, leave it all sometimes 😆

Great episode Dave😌🙌🌟I bought a hoya cv ruthie and it's a bit late for a potting, but it should be fine😅👍All I expect is root growth until this Spring when it makes some growth. It's a quite large plant about 5 inches tall with 6 leaves
Oh, yeah! Great plant. I'm excited to see where she goes next year!
Hey Dave, This video is interesting and timely. My Hai Phong has not done well since I got it. All of the vines dried up after I got it. It is firmly rooted. I then did a very close inspection. There is etching on a few of the leaves. I thought I was thoroughly looking at all my plants before this video.. Any ideas?
Oh no! Can you email me a pic?
@@soberplantguy yes, but I'm a terrible photographer
@@helenesolomon That's ok. We'll do our best. I have a ver healthy Hai Phong if we need to get a replacement headed over.
You answered a question that I have had for several months. A little background- a couple of summers ago I bought a Hoya Chelsea. It was a fairly large plant and I divided it into three. I gave my daughter one and kept two. The one I have in my living room is doing fine. The one I have in my plant room developed those cauliflower like growths. I had no idea what caused it until your comment about flat mites in this video. I have pulled it off the shelf and treated it along with the other Hoyas nearby. None of the others are showing symptoms. My question is- what would you do with the plant that has the cauliflower like growths? Cut them off? There are several growths on this plant and they are very unsightly. The plant seems to be doing well and growing. But I hate the way those growths look. 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️ It will drastically reduce the size of the plant - but hopefully it would recover. What would you do?
First, I would be treating for longer than you think you need to. People go 8 weeks, I'd go longer. You really don't want to start the fight up all over again. They have such an incredibly long life cycle. Probably overkill, but hey....
New life will form at that ugliness when the plant pest issue has been solved--actually, before the issue has been resolved. New growth starts emerging, people assume all is well, and stop treatment. Only to have those little devils return. Cheers from Iowa City
@ thank you for the info. I decided to trash that plant, since I have another that is fine. Thank you for mentioning that in your video!
@@conniecochran8523 Bingo. This is a great option in my opinion 😁
@@conniecochran8523Even if the other plants aren't showing signs, I would still treat them for flat mites for a good 8+ weeks. Those little jerks spread like wildfire and are really kinda nasty to get rid of. You can't see them with the naked eye either. In a matter of a month or two, I had about 15+ plants infected with them before I realized what the heck they were or what was going on.
@@RiseandProcraftinatethank you
thanks Dave, another entertaining video. I am still giving my callystophylla Kalimantan a hairy eyeball almost daily as it sits there (2-leaf, 1-node cutting purchased in October) doing absolutely nothing. It has been repotted in fresh substrate, dusted for flat mites (and squinted at with a magnifying glass and jewellery loupe) and tried in a variety of locations and yet... bubkis. I will look under the hood in a couple of weeks as you suggest if it continues to pout.😐
I have a few to deal with as well, but unfortunately I already *know* that I have serious problems, per my video on the deadliest product (pot) I've ever purchased/used 😫
I just got a number of new ficus and hoya. The hygrometer I. My bedroom the to stays In the 60’s during the days and dropped down I to the fifties. I think that I need to get a small heater for that room. It really doesn’t get any heat from the mini split in the living room. It has to go around two corners to get there. Just enough heat to bring the temp up to the upper 60’s all the time. I think
Most of my plants go to about 58 at night, and lower sometimes/often in the dead of winter. The sensitive ones don't make it sometimes. But my ficus is always solid.
@ that’s good to know. They’ll only be in there a couple months then I’ll move the them to other spots after I move things around.
@ good to know. Maybe I won’t worry about then then. I just wish it would stay in the 60’s at night though.
I’ve only now noticed the rearrangement of your lovely knitted pumpkins…

And Pax?
Hi Dave can you please explain exactly what we are looking for when it comes to healthy roots?
This is a fantastic question, and I'll make a video about this in the very, very near future! Thanks for the suggestion 😊
@soberplantguy thank you, I have another question.. Does soil matter when it comes to colder homes, does a regular potting mix remain colder? I bought the 3 items you suggested for potting up plants and was thinking maybe the organic matter will retain/produce warmth due to decomposition? Idk.. Just curious,I do notice although the potting soil is light, it stays wet longer.. My house can be in the low 60s (I grew up with a wood stove, so I'm accustom to keeping the temps down even now) ☺️
@@kathryncustadio We keep our house in the upper(ish) fifties overnight. The upstairs is of course warmer, but that is part of why I use the pots and mix I do. These inert products won't break down like a peat-based mix. I actually find that my mix, the way I mix it, dries out more quickly. Perhaps I use less coco coir? This is why I absolutely abhor the hard-and-fast rules I so often see on Facebook.

@@soberplantguyYou are looking quite dashing today, if I do or don’t say so myself…. Where’s the gun show at Dave? Was just wondering… 🤔
Hey Dave. I’ve got a question for you. One of my new Hoyas developed brown spot on the leaves with a yellow ring around them I’ve sprayed them for pests when I got it. Then it developed these spots. Is it possibly over watering?
If they're relatively small, this could just be edema, and the leaf tissue damage around the burst cell. If it spreads, that's different. Something like a sulfur treatment would be in order there.
@@soberplantguy ok thank you. I’ll monitor their size. But I’ll hold off on the watering.
@ ok. They seem to be small at this point. Maybe 1mm
I had water dripping off the monstera leaves. I asked another UA-camr and he explained about transfo,..(I can’t spell it), and I started slipping every other watering suggested by the app I used I have learned to water less.
It’s a completely natural process that’s happens any time I water. It’s not a sign of anything at all. I never worry about anything other than the furniture it may drip on 😅
Finger pointing? You did it! You did it!😂😂😂😂
HEY
😳. Sorry Sir
@@paxleidig5327 😆
The proof is in the pudding Dave. Like you said, some plants will fail no matter what you do. But when the vast majority of your plants are absolutely thriving, you’re doing what works well for you! I know that I couldn’t grow the way you do (super chunky mix and terra cotta) so it’s just proof that everyone needs to learn what works for their own care style. And don’t criticize those who grow differently than ourselves.
You had me at "...don't criticize" 😆
What did you use to pin that last Hoya down with? I've got terrible eyesight and unruly Hoyas that could do with some pinning down! lol
These are the pins: www.amazon.com/dp/B098T9HYXH?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzsoberpla-20&creativeASIN=B098T9HYXH&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.28CEN7TFUWTVJ&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d_asin They may be out of stock, but anything similar will work fine. It's nice that you can easily remove them from the plant with that little tab!
Hey Dave I have a question regarding a grow tent can I put it in the basement which is cold in the winter will the grow tent keep the plants warm or would i need a heat source? Btw I took care of those mealies i see them once in a blue moon
Good! And good riddance ☠️ The tent will be room temperature when the lights are off, so I guess it’s down to *how* cold your basement is. As in? Our is extremely cold, so I couldn’t do it.
@soberplantguy ok mine is the same but I store my potted elephant ears there in the winter and they survive would it be possible to put a portable heater or just use it for the spring to fall
I’m not sure if this has been asked before but can a dominant leaf steal nutrients from a non dominant leaf? I always have new growth where one leaf will grow really fast (sometimes over night) and the other is stunted and won’t grow at all. The stunted one sometimes yellow and fall off or grows but not at the same pace as the other 😢
Without really knowing why, I can tell you that this is incredibly common. When I see two forming on my 'Elephant' for instance, I just expect only one to develop. It's more random on smaller-leaved plant. Cheers from Iowa City
All I'll say for Svetlana is that girl knows how to illustrate a point. 🤣
