I purchased my first and only Phal. Orchid this past April. Once it finished blooming I moved it into a sphagnum/LECA mix. It appears to be doing well with new root/leaf growth and I even now have a spike with buds!
I love orchids. I have some in pure sphagnum, some in bark, some in half/half. All do well. I do have to admit I'm in south Mississippi and I grow them all outside till the few weeks out of the year I have to bring them in. I let the spikes lean if they want to, I don't stake them up. I’ll say that clear plastic pots were a game changer for me for orchids, especially Phalaenopsis. It’s so easy to tell when they need to be watered by appearance. You're right. If anybody's interested in exploring Orchids, the scratch and dent shelves at a big box store are a great place to start. I know your love of terra cotta, and I'm growing a Phalaenopsis in TC. It's been years, it's doing fine, just use a bit more sphag. The downside is that the roots really glom onto the sides ofthe pot. A fun video, Dave, and you're wrong, green is the best color.
Afternoon Dave. When I started collecting orchids, I literally got my Phalaenopsis Orchids, either 75% off or free. I waited for the blooms to go and I talked to the plant lady at Lowe's. She was just about to throw them away, and she gave me 15 of them for free. I only lost 2 of them. Almost a year later, they have doubled in size, and most are blooming. Now, I have graduated to Cattleya orchids. Love them all. ❤️
I found that orchid you described (white with faint hint of purple-almost like Japanese watercolor) at my Lowe’s on clearance and it was in great shape with three flower spikes - just a few spent blooms. Cut them off and have been enjoying the remaining blooms ever since (about six weeks now). I have figured out how to rebloom these beauties and I’m so excited to add this to my very small, but growing orchid collection. Don’t sleep on clearance orchids from big box stores - they’re great deals!
Orchids are really good house plants, Do has little as possible with them. Cut off the dead flowers and water when dry. They live in the bathroom. They are about 10 years old I think, maybe more. My sister bought me the same orchid as your first one. Gorgeous, stunning flowers. still blooming after 5 months. Pity folks throw them away when the flower dies back, shame. Good luck with yours. Thanks for a great video Dave.

I've watched Orchid Girl many times, went online, did everything and yet I can't get past the dormant plant. Thanks for sharing. I can't wait to see your update on that orchid! Dee, NY
Hi, Dee! Perhaps you've manifested that teal orchid, as the kids say 🤣 Hope you're December is going well, and that the unnamed pests have abated......
@@deeb2000 Between root mealies, and those awful pots, I've lost so many plants this year. I think, overall, it was not a great year for me in that respect 😬
Sound like you’d might love Hoya Solaniflora flowers they are white with purple stripes 🤤 Whats there to learn about reblooming a Phaleonopsis? Put it in a windowsil and water it… they eventually give a new spike (or thats my experience with them) only have one currently… it made a pup… took it off and now theres 2 with spikes within a year 😅 same for the previous ones that I ended up gifting a couple of years ago 🌸 (Miro had lots of orchids earlier on… I think they had a virus or something at some point though and he stopped growing them for a bit)
I'll be looking that up pronto! I think people would have to learn enough about phals to care about watering a plant that just has a few large green leaves 🤣 As for Miro, yes, I've heard him talk about the virus. I'd just hoped that he'd found a new, permanent lane 😆😁😆
@ its about 40-60 euro currently it seems… is it worse in the States? (I don’t call that cheap by the way, Id prefer prices to be half that or less, but it also doesn’t scare me off like the triple digit ones would)
Gad! I thought I was intense having bought two more Kingianums (which are in bloom), and a Dendrobium from Ritter’s Orchids on Etsy which should bloom yellow. As you have said before, the color is green.
I live in a clearing in the woods and a neighbor asks me why I don’t cut down the evergreens and I tell them that I want to see green in the winter. Ritter’s seems good. Mine arrived as a beautiful plant in perfect shape. But, I am done ordering until it gets warmer(although we do have a warm spell in January 😊).
Those flowers were well-spent, shriveling, and falling off because, I think, the orchids are about fifteen feet across from the sliding doors to the outside. so they get continuously blasted with freezing air 🥶
I wouldn’t grow orchids in pure sphagnum moss. All Ive ever used is a nice store bought orchid mix. I did mix a little sphagnum in with the orchid mix when I repotted my gifted phal. It seems pretty happy.
I think this is quite clearly the safest bet for me. I unboxed my Hauserman's order on Nov 7, and my large phal *still* doesn't need to be watered. I'll never get used to that 😆
I'm by no means an experienced orchid grower, but I've had mine for about 6 or 7 years and I disagree that cutting the flower spike above the node weakens the orchid. It still grows its own spike and sometimes reblooms from the existing spike. My dudes are all doing great and keep reflowering. Some orchids just ignore the existing spike and eventually kill it off. One orchid grew a keiki out of that spike and now mother and daughter are sat in the same pot, mom is growing a new leaf and daughter is growing a flower spike. Life's good. The best colour is green. Purple is nice and everything. My walls are light purple. But green is still the nicest colour to date. But you can't always be right :)
And you join the parade of Green Freaks 🤣😂🤣 Good info, thank you! I shouldn't have said "weakens the plant." Poor choice of words, but I was not feeling grate with this stupid cold. I meant that it inhibits next season's flowers--but I take it that it's not been your experience. I'll give it a go with one of my other phals and see how it goes! Thank you for the thoughtful comment, except for you dubious claim about green 🤨
Two colors that I avoid, purple and red. If Planted in Rhode Island loves Red and you love Purple, my life has changed. 🙂 Here I thought you were perfect (kidding of course). Anyway, my favorite color is ripe wheat. That golden pale yellowish gold. I can stare at a wheat field moving in the wind for hours. Now... orchids. I raised them for many years. The roots on your orchid are crazy good. I am in shock! I think grocery stores and big box stores are getting better at the correct substrate. Orchids do very well in hydroponics too, but not sure if Iowa would be good. The water gets cold, and it kills the orchids. In Colorado (I used to live in Florida) I have sadly found a mushy leaf at work where I house my orchids. Really allow the orchid to go through the natural timing of light, winter 10 hours, summer 16+) It helps with the blooms. I think that your orchid did have a core because it looks like the center is a tad hollow. Hydrogen peroxide won't hurt it, the spike should be trimmed. Blooming takes the energy from the plant. Also, the rule of thumb is fertilizing them "weakly on a weekly" basis. I don't like the extreme chunky bark; I always liked the medium to smallish size. My favorites are the Paphiopedilums and Vandas. Good luck. There is a really gorgeous DARK purple Paph. You will love it. I still like you even though you seem to be color blind. (JK) :-) enjoyed your video.
No Spag unless it is for an unhealthy orchid for a short time. I like orchid medium mix orchid mix, just no perlite. Very much like our aroid/hoya mix.
Purple is the color for royalty. Highly sought after. In the bible also. Good enough for me. Don't make me buy orchids AND hoyas. I need groceries first.
I’m watching 22-23 UA-cam channels that are just Planty. And another 14-15 political but they are mostly 9-16 minutes long. So mini channels. Some days I don’t watch them. You know how I can’t keep my opinion to myself. So I get a lot of return answers from other people listening. Some questioning my sanity. lol 😂
My favorite color is blue, but my mother is one of those purple people. One time I was researching a video idea and learned that purple is the color with the highest vibration. All you purple obsessed people were on to something!
Iowa City bestie, you should hydrogen peroxide the roots. Phals attract snails, and they eat the roots of the orchids and other plants. I have an extensive collection of orchids 😏, and the last 4 orchids I purchased, I didn't H2O2 soak the orchids... Cue the Infestation of the Snails! Fun fact about me, I'm scared of snails... and worms... So yeah, that was a fun time getting rid of those babies. Ms. Orchid Girl would have been so disappointed in me. 😓. My phals spike all throughout the year, and I have a few that had been blooming for 9 months. I ended up cutting off the spikes (The Orchid Whisperer, also on YT, had a similar sitch and spoke about giving the orchid a break) and a few weeks later, new spikes are emerging. I grow only in sphag moss bc I'm time deficient, and it quite literally takes me 6 hours to water only my orchid collection. (Clearly, my self-control is top tier 😅.) I'm so excited for you!!! It's like The White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland dragged you down a new rabbit hole ( or you chased him there)! Good times my friend. Stay warm in Iowa City, Iowa. It's 33° here in NYC, so will only imagine your temps.
Hold the phone--six hours to water *just* the orchids??! That's pretty amazing. At this point I imagine that you've really honed down your time management system 😁 Thanks for the advice. I'll get to the store for some H202 this morning. Cheers from chilllllly Iowa City!
Love Miro…specifically for the accent 😂… Dave, can you conjure up a delightfully calm and gentle European accent? The American thing has worn out its welcome.
A supervisor at Lowe's tried to sell me a near dead orchid for half price. It took all I had to resist sneering openly in her face. I just walked away.
@@soberplantguy - No martyrdom for me either. In the end, it's just a plant. But I was interested in trying some of the rescue techniques I've seen in various videos. I own a single Phal and it's lived longer than any I've ever purchased - two months. I may take a chance on another one. But it'll be a healthy one, I hope.
Hi Dave😌🙌sphagnum moss is great, you just don't fill the whole pot with it☝️Only fill half and the bottom half fill with styrofoam chips. When you water you should take it to the sink and run water through the sphagnum to give it a good rinse, then water with water treated with Dechlorinator liquid and some liquid feed. tip the plant pot to get any excess water out. I like to put my pot in a cache pot so it doesn't dry out too fast☝️The roots should all be white when you water again, if there is any moisture, never water again and wait until it is dry. 130 lumen light made for fishtanks is enough to grow phalaenopsis. They can even be grown by a North facing window easily. They love shade and dislike any direct sun on their leaves, however you'll see growers with them mounted in sunny exposed areas and they will shrivel up unless the humidity is damp and moist and they get plenty of cloud cover. As for indoors just 50% humidity is plenty enough. I wipe my phalaenopsis leaves once a month too. Avoid temperatures over 89.6℃f and move it to an airconditioned room. I lost many to high temperatures. They can grow well at normal warm house temperatures of 68°F/ down to 50℃. Happy growing Dave😌🤲💖

@soberplantguy Thanks Dave. I've bested the naughty bugs but I lost 8 hoyas in the process due to the stress. ☹️
@@deeb2000 Between root mealies, and those awful pots, I've lost so many plants this year. I think, overall, it was not a great year for me in that respect 😬
@soberplantguy I hear ya, my worse year as well 😭
Because is good enough. Lol 😂
I'm not sure what this refers to, but "good enough" is my life motto 😅
Because! Mom said so! 😂
@@hanstera_deliciosa I never once did what mom said, which in retrospect........
@@soberplantguy Makes a lot of sense
I don't see on your list, sphagnum moss? Did I miss it?
Whoops! Thanks for the heads up. I guess I *meant* to add. I have now. Be well, and cheers from 6 degree Iowa City 🥶

Sound like you’d might love Hoya Solaniflora flowers they are white with purple stripes 🤤
Whats there to learn about reblooming a Phaleonopsis? Put it in a windowsil and water it… they eventually give a new spike (or thats my experience with them) only have one currently… it made a pup… took it off and now theres 2 with spikes within a year 😅 same for the previous ones that I ended up gifting a couple of years ago 🌸
(Miro had lots of orchids earlier on… I think they had a virus or something at some point though and he stopped growing them for a bit)
I'll be looking that up pronto!
I think people would have to learn enough about phals to care about watering a plant that just has a few large green leaves 🤣
As for Miro, yes, I've heard him talk about the virus. I'd just hoped that he'd found a new, permanent lane 😆😁😆
@ I love me an obscure Hoya 🤣
(Will water anything that lives…. Its almost an obsession 😅)
@Wubblyt I'm reasonably sure that I've continued to water a few dead plants, too 🙄
@Wubblyt Holy crap that's an expensive Hoya !!!!
I'll have to check out Ritter's.... As for green. Hm. So many people have incorrectly identified that color as best 🤣😂🤣
@@phf3238 I know I'd be leaving them, too. I love evergreens! January is the month that we'll see -25 often. Not great 😂
I don’t see the moss in your Amazon Store
@@phf3238 I just added it. Just another one of those things I *thought* I'd already done 🙄😆
You’ll cut it off even with the pretty flowers?
Those flowers were well-spent, shriveling, and falling off because, I think, the orchids are about fifteen feet across from the sliding doors to the outside. so they get continuously blasted with freezing air 🥶
@@soberplantguy 🌵 ☀️ 😘
@@hanstera_deliciosa We have grass. Lots and lots and lots and lots of grass. So there 🤣
I wouldn’t grow orchids in pure sphagnum moss.
I'll never get used to that 😆
@ It’s been wet this long? Aren’t you worried about root rot? That’s over a month 😬
Wait ... Planted In Rhode Island like RED? This does change things. Thank you for the detailed care care--I really appreciate it!
@@soberplantguy I hope Planted in Rhode Island doesn't like RED or PURPLE. We shall see!

I know nothing about orchids. what's a spike? is that where the flower comes out of? 😂😂
I don’t know anything, either-but! Yes, the flower spike 😁
Plant people are rad.
Purple is the color for royalty. Highly sought after. In the bible also. Good enough for me. Don't make me buy orchids AND hoyas. I need groceries first.
😂😂😂
Fair enough 😆 I worry about the buying habits of some UA-camrs 💸

I’m watching 22-23 UA-cam channels that are just Planty. And another 14-15 political but they are mostly 9-16 minutes long. So mini channels. Some days I don’t watch them. I’m trying to rehab an orchid I almost killed, poor thing. I’m not an orchid person 😂
Too soon to tell for me ... though I'm keeping quite a few happy, and have got my first flowers from one that I grew "from scratch" 😆
I am not a fan if spag. I love my orchids in bark or mounted 😊
It's really hard to imagine that I'd make a switch to it. As I said ... wet foreverrrrrrr
My brother in law grew fabulous orchids & he always put some strands of sphagnum moss through the bark 👍
@@heatherstephens9295 Here's hoping 😊
My favorite color is blue, but my mother is one of those purple people. One time I was researching a video idea and learned that purple is the color with the highest vibration. All you purple obsessed people were on to something!
I love blue, too. But when I state something ... I must overstate it 😆
Iowa City bestie, you should hydrogen peroxide the roots.
Ask her.
My wife is gonna kill me if I start coming home with orchids now
😳
Love Miro…specifically for the accent 😂… Dave, can you conjure up a delightfully calm and gentle European accent? The American thing has worn out its welcome.
I'm so surprised by how many European viewers I have. Like, don't you have someone more interesting to watch? 🙃
A supervisor at Lowe's tried to sell me a near dead orchid for half price. It took all I had to resist sneering openly in her face. I just walked away.
It's a weird tactic. Like, take whatever money you can get for your dead plant...! Lots of rescue martyrs out there (I'm just not one of them 😅)
@@soberplantguy - No martyrdom for me either. In the end, it's just a plant. But I was interested in trying some of the rescue techniques I've seen in various videos. I own a single Phal and it's lived longer than any I've ever purchased - two months. I may take a chance on another one. But it'll be a healthy one, I hope.
Cyanobacteria.
Thank you!
Wow! Thank you for all of this detailed information! I really appreciate it 😊
