Got some questions about PPFD rating in the grow tent, so I’ll post results here, and in a pinned comment in that video. The tent is 4X4, and 80in tall. Top shelf, AGLEX light only (240w dimmed to 50%) is 500, about 1’ directly underneath. It drops to 300 at roughly 1.5’. Just off to the side, or behind the front row that sits directly below the light, it hits 270. Same for the back of the tent. It’s right at 106 all the way off to the side (same as lower shelves). Middle and bottom shelves are remarkably consistent now with the Barrina T8 (24w). 270 1’ directly underneath the light, 192 at 1.5’, and 106 off to the side. The middle of the tent (floor) is a surprising 146 at 4’ beneath the AGLEX (with the benefit of the Barrinas), and 85 at 5’.

@@paxleidig5327 That's a fact. It *almost* makes me miss living there, a little. But not much. That much brutal heat and humidity is a little much for me.
That's a beautiful grow tent and I can see its benefits (you have a very understanding wife!). I don't dare ask or even hint to my spouse about getting one! I think he would even squeal if I mentioned getting a humidifier. So, either my Hoyas will survive or they won't. 🤪 Interesting how a plant will let you know if it's happy. I have a west facing window where I keep about seven Hoyas and do they love it (well, most). I see new growth just about everyday. In fact, my new Silver Dollar that I've only had about a week (repotted) has a new leaf sprout already. It's my biggest leaf hoya to date and I'm already apprehensive about the size it will get to be. I check for pests pretty much daily, all in self-watering pots with fertilized water and they get a good shower frequently. It's a fun hobby and I have to use restraint because Hoyas are so beautiful! Thanks for taking the time to post your journey!!
I think you'll be fine with your 'Silver Dollar.' They don't get too terribly large. I really should put mine somewhere wit lower light, and enjoy the silver for a while 😁
Your tent really looks amazing in your After shots. I have found that just intentional placement can free up space. Or the appearance of space. I did that when I had a do over on my whole Rhipsalis/jungle cactus plant stand.
This is true. As I was putting them back, it occurred to me that I didn't have to place them in the same *exact* spot. Little changes like that can sure make a difference.
Wow, that KSB is stunning... it's 4:40am and not fair you wake me up this much!! ;) Wow again, you mentioned the Rebecca to me previously, and I've looked at buying one and thought ehh? But I had no idea how beautiful she is!! I'm in the Pac. Northwest rainforest, it just got colder a day or 2 ago, so no open windows. I've got my de-humidifer on now - 80% humidity in a small office with 200+ plants, lots of bottom watering bowls and a very good start at switching all to diy pon - so I have to battle mould! I didn't think of the extra water in my office when I started the switch to diy pon this summer... yikes, lol!!
@@soberplantguy Ha! Yes, 80% natural humidity would be great in a grow tent, but not so much in a working office when you turn the heat on - it's like a sauna ;)
I bet! I'm sure it's a chore just to CLEAN the tent, I can only imagine having to stop and address the camera every 10 minutes! It was worth it though - very entertaining and educational.
I'm jealous of that Hoya Cereen! It's gorgeous! That's a nice grow tent. It's obvious the hoyas do better in a controlled environment such as that - holds moisture and temperature and light is contained. Right? With 65 in my South bay window and another 17 in two west facing windows, I can see the difference in growth and obviously sun stress between how they thrive in the grow tent and an open room. I'm hoping to get a grow tent in my basement when the basement is redone. Thanks for the tour! Dee, NY
Is this the *one* Hoya I grow that you don't have? 🤣 It's true about the conditions in there. Hoya just seem to "pop." As I said about that clem, even in good conditions, warm, bright window, it still took that humid tent to get the leaves going. Love that thing sooo much! Otherwise might find it a pain to deal with; I just put on a podcast or music and slowly work my through it. It's mediative for me.
@@soberplantguy Lol! It seems that way. I have uncommon hoyas I never hear about on youtube tho. Yes, collecting hoyas has been therapeutic for me too inspite of sudden death, mealies, etc. The down side is my other true loves, reading and painting (art) has gone by the wayside thanks to long COVID! But I am able to hold on to my love of music, thank God. I have to find a way to get my focus and inspiration back! Do you have any other hobbies?
Ok, I just searched your channel to find this: World's BEST pest preventive AND eliminator. Natural, Safe, Effective. - I'm assuming you haven't changed the recipe? I hope 2 comments help your algorithm ;)
Thank you! Yep, same recipe. I have done a little experimenting with PureCrop1 this summer (root mealies, not my first choice 🤣). But that is still my go to. Always appreciate the support !
@@xaniabrown2468 I'm filming an episode on this today or tomorrow, I do believe. First, I'd recommend taking this very, very seriously. They spread like absolute wildfire if you water your plants in groups--heck, even if you don't. I have no idea why they can't just be happy in one pot. I used the purecrop1 at 24ml / gal for active mealies, and 12ml / gal for "just in case." I also did an experiment with pure hydrogen peroxide on two different plants. One was about three weeks ago (or more, actually). The question was: would it damage the plant in any way (no). Would eggs hatch, or would some survive, somehow (no). Some plants seem to survive these for a while quite well, others go downnnnn fast.
@soberplantguy Thank you for responding! I'm sure you're busy on this fine Sunday morning, and I cannot wait for the video. I gotta say, if I ever were to make it to Iowa (highly doubted), and I ran into you on some little street, I think I'd have a moment, heart racing, sweaty palms, the whole shebang. You are one of the FEW UA-camrs, influensters, planty ppl 🙄😒, who knows what the heck you're talking about. Thank you for your service to my entertainment and educational causes. Your sacrifice is greatly appreciated. Lol.
You are such a good example to me with monthly washes. I do it pretty regularly, but not monthly. What season is the worst for pests? Is it the spring or summer? I love Grow Tents and wish that I had one or a grow room would be even better for me. The hoyas are staying to a minimum of 42. I bet in a few years, I will have more, but I am trying to keep them to 42. I still work full time, garden, ride my bike, camp, and do lots of canning. I can't do one more thing until I retire. 16 more months. I do like the tents!! Would be great for growing my seedlings too! Thank you! Another great video.
@@ttschrock7126 It's 80" tall (and 4'x4' if I didn't mention that, oops). I wouldn't do anything differently except for the lighting setup that I changed yesterday, and to not have the fan blowing directly across the top shelf. But for purchases, I love the tent, the Aglex light, and the results 😊
Lovely tent! I have thought about getting one of these tents, but my issue with them is they aren't see through. So, instead, I have 6 of those wire shelves with the clear plastic covers so I can see my plants without having to open them up and let all the heat and humidity out, unless of course, I have to water or do maintenance. Then, of course, there is no way around it, you have to open it up.
Totally get that! Whereas my issue with yours is that it *is* see-through, which would not work for me. Setting aside the interior reflection, since I use this as truly a grow tent, the blinding light coming out of my tent at 5:00am just around the corner of our bedroom would not amuse my wife. At all 🤣
@@soberplantguy Haha! Yeah, that's why I set the lights to be on from 10a-10p. My husband works night shift. He'd have my head if they came on at 5am. He also wasn't real impressed the first day when they all came on at once. So, now, they come on 1min ap5 from each other and turn off 1min apart from each other. Not so hard on the eyes that way, considering each one has 6-8 T8 lights. LOL
@@soberplantguy Haha! Yeah, I told my husband our neighbors probably think we are growing something way more interesting. It wouldn't be the first house in the neighborhood that has grown that, but they would be sorely disappointed to find out what I am really growing. 🤣
I picked up an Argentea Princess for a reasonable price and it’s got two new leaves! Never mind the other Hoya that I killed last week, shhhh I’m good at plants 😂
My sister is a dental hygienist. After COVID, they installed a unit in each treatment room. After each patient, they close the door and activate a cycle that blasts the room with ultraviolet radiation. I'll ask her for some details.
How are you mixing your pest prevention now? You mentioned you added PureCrop1 to the mix. I just use PureCrop1 and during the colder months spray every 10 days +-. I did enjoy seeing this and learned. What a wonderful set up! I just received Hoya Chinghungensis last week and love it. They are hard to find but worth the effort.
Same formula. I was lucky enough to import some root mealies, so I was trying out PureCrop1 on those. Then I just started adding about 20ml / gallon since I had so much of it. I mean, why not?
🎉Yay!!! We finally see the tent and all those gorgeous 🪴. I was literally looking up the Mars tents yesterday to show my fiancé who wants to start growing micro greens to sell. My question is do you think it’s ok to keep houseplants and veggies in a tent or greenhouse together? Again I really appreciate all your videos. I watch every one but mostly when I’m at work so I can’t be on my phone to leave comments like I’d like to. Also you have really inspired me to start my own channel but boy am I nervous about it. 😬 P.S. You really remind me of the comedian Tom Papa.
Tom Papa?? That's awfully high praise. I can't see a problem mixing and matching edibles/non, *unless* there a huge discrepancy in lighting needs. But even that can be managed pretty easily. I've had a good time on UA-cam. Somehow the algorithm has weeded out all the jerks that are out there 🤣
What do you use for mealies? I just sprayed my golden pothos less than a week ago and I noticed them all over again and big ones too. I use alcohol 70% with neem oil and castille soap. I’ve two more I found today, no where each other.
@@pudik2008 I know this won't be satisfying, but I only use this, as preventive, and really don't deal with them: ua-cam.com/video/Zew88V5rdOg/v-deo.htmlsi=7EpIGHwV9tJsVOhL Recently I've been adding PureCrop1, as I was doing an experiment with root mealies (NOT by choice 😆)
I have a greenhouse in my backyard in Texas, and my Hoya are vigorous growers out there! Would a tent in there be of any benefit? They get natural lighting year around. Love your Chanel. Congrats on sobriety! Happy Growing💚💚💚💚💚💚
Unless you're trying to contacting heating to a small area, or for some reason need to block out light (like for neighbors), I'm not sure what advantage it would be. I do know I'm jealous of your greenhouse without even seeing it 😅 (Although I have a friend up here in Iowa with one, and he heats it to 72-74 degrees all winter 💸💸💸
@@soberplantguy I heat any time it drops to 50 or below. My greenhouse is 15 x 24 feet and when I lost my mom I inherited just enough to build it. It was my dream so I did it.
Thank you! For that foliar spray, I use 12ml / gallon. If you have root mealies, it's 24ml to kill 'em off, then 12ml maintenance until you feel that life is good again 🤣
Yes! Someone else asked for this very same thing, so later this morning I'll get those, and then put it in a pinned comment. I may also add to community post. And thanks for the compliment!
Okay, got those specs updated in the pinned comment. As for heat, when it's cool, say 58-60 degrees, I expect the lighting to increase the temp by about 12 degrees or so. When it's hot, it can get very very hot. So I have to vent it. One day is was almost 95 in there. And that's not great 🤣
ahhh you have a kaimuki! I'm passively looking for one of those 👀 the flowers are so unique and pretty. I see so many people with grow tents now... I am tempted but I gotta ask, where does one fit such a thing in your home? 😅
I purchased a yoga "bilobata" from Home Depot in 2022. I don't believe its a true one. Like yours the ones I've seen online have thicker leaves, firmer stems. Mine has thin leaves and stems reminding me more of a dischidia type. Could it be DS70? I don't like it...
Costa farms mislabeled the H. sp aff burtoniae as both of those things. I had one, and also really, really disliked it. I just got rid of it not a week ago. Won’t miss that one 🤣
I love the black cat! Again, not a Hoya fan, but I have a pink princess & a pubicalix splash that I really like, minus the dang vine. Both gifted of course. What do you think would happen if we chopped those off? Wouldn’t it encourage it to bush out? 🤷♀️ Have you seen Harli Gs grow tent?
Hello! A vine with nodes will leaf out eventually leaf out if there are nodes. It sure helps to stake/trellis it. But if the vine is long, and the internodal spacing is far, I chop, just like you said. As for Harli G. That's not a tent. That's a walk-in grow room 🤣 Sooo jealous.
@@soberplantguy Yeah. Hers is large! The vine does appear to have a few tiny leaves, but mostly little roots. I’ll probably propagate the tiny leaves down the road & pitch the rest. It’s wrapped around a bamboo stake, sorta.
@@soberplantguy I hear ya. It’s all I had on hand at the time & I really don’t want to invest in a trellis. I don’t like the look of them. It’s not long enough to worry about & I’ll probably cut it off. I know to wrap it counterclockwise. I’m fine with trailing plants, but foo-foo trellises are not happening here 😜
That Rebecca is amazing. My clemensiorum has one leaf and 2 new leafs have both died off. Any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong?? What size is your tent. Was it hard to set up? It looks a little intimidating to me. Great content as always.
Oh, dang. Yep. Missed those obvious questions. The tent is 4x4, and it could not be easier to set up--by yourself. Truly. I cannot believe how empty it looks after rearranging plants. Which is awesome. For your clem, hm. If you weren't so experienced, of course I'd say watering or pests. But that's not going to be it. So I guess I'm stumped. I do hope you get it figured out--coolio plants.
awesome set up and you’re so organized. Great job. I got a question about the pure one crop . I have some of that and I’ve been afraid to use it. Can I ask what ratio you mix for your houseplant?
Thank you! If you are lucky enough to have active root mealies, use 24ml per gallon. 12ml for maintenance after they seem to all be dead. For the foliar spray, I use 12ml. I've used it on every kind of plant, with every kind of texture, with no issues whatsoever. I would, however, cut the grow lights, or dim them if that's an option.
You? What about ME??! 😆 Mother Earth used to make a fantastic perlite, and then poof, no more. I hope that's not the case with Supreme. And of course I've been putting off ordering a bag for weeks now. Duh. Because why would stock our on something I use all the freaking time?? (I've noted that I don't learn from my mistakes.)
The traslation came through as "people" but I assume you meant pests? If so, I use this:ua-cam.com/video/Zew88V5rdOg/v-deo.htmlsi=XAq_dnM15JqvVrsK Happy growing!
Hi Dave😃🙌The lighting is definitely better😌🤲💖I do have a question, and I haven't ever had an answer to it🤔How much does it cost you per month roughly on power consumption? Are the grow lights as reasonable on power as ordinary home lights?
I always wondered that, too. The majority of the lights I use are warm and pleasant, so they are the main light source in my living room and downstairs porch. They are exactly as efficient as any modern LED bulb. Hand to heart, we noticed no difference in our electric bill using allll these grow lights (central air has our bill so all-over-the place that it would be hard to notice a small fluctuation). Now, when we use multiple standalone heaters, that's a different story 😬
@@soberplantguy Oh, ok😌👍That's good news that the lights don't make the electric bill change much. Yes, we have heating and it does make the power bill go up a lot, and Summers here in Japan you have to use an air cooler. Thanks very much for the long and thorough message😌🤲🌟
Another timely vid. I am struggling with lighting. I have installed 2 Barrina T8, 3' long lights over shelves that are the same length. The height is about 2' high on one and 2'6" on the others. where can I find a good (written) resource to explain light and PPFD to me. I know you explained but I need it in writing because of my TBI. I burned some of the leaves on my Sunrise with a Sansi 10 W light trying to sun stress it. Please help.
lightsciencetech.com/what-are-par-ppf-and-ppfd-and-why-should-you-care/ This is a good article explaining *what* it is. You can google plants and PPFD settings, but you will need an app like *photone* and buy the LED option ($6 I believe). If that's too much to hassle with, I can tell you that I grow tons of Hoya under both T5, T8, and T10 and don't burn them--unless a new vine climbs on the rather warm metal.
Thank you Dave, it was nice to see how you grow Hoyas in your tent. I have a tiny marshydro tent (70x70cm) It is surprising how many plants can fit into a tent. Some plants seem to really like/need it… others……….. grow massive aerial roots, so they will have to be moved out 😅 The tent gets lazy pest management (benificial mites seem to like it in there as well, they last longer than on plants outside of the tent or even in the cabinets) While it has a lot of benefits, Id personally prefer to not have a tent eventually, that will not be anytime soon though, still too little space elsewhere for too many plants that I really really like/enjoy 😅 How did you treat the wood? Does it get moldy?
My H. obscura started life in there, and the Ariel roots were INSANE. I agree, with care, an awful lot of plants can go into a relatively small tent. I have thought about beneficials, but I've also never struggled with pests, yet, so haven't spent the money. Maybe next year I should be more cautious. As for the wood, it's cedar, and does not mold. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@soberplantguy ahh Cedar wood, of course! Beneficial insects are kind of on the expensive side compared to soaps and such, but I simply don’t have the energy to spray everything down frequently.. I’ve had to deal with thrips once (about 2 years ago)… they wouldn’t fully leave for almost half a year and I was on top of my plants checking every plant with magnifying glasses and flashlights every 3 days… it was so much work! 2 rounds (2 months) of mites fully took care of the remnants and I decided right there and then that I would never deal with thrips again.. all I have to do now is replace the sachets every 8 weeks or so (since now its just to prevent something from happening). Works against thrips, whiteflies, mites…. Doesn’t work for mealies, but having an insect screen in the window seems to work for those so far.. if they don’t come in, I wont have to deal with them 😃 I understand its not for everyone… And if you have the energy to spray, thats a perfect way to deal with things 😊

Well good morning!
Side note: what the heck is a *de*-humidifier 🤣😂🤣
@@soberplantguy Ha! Yes, 80% natural humidity would be great in a grow tent, but not so much in a working office when you turn the heat on - it's like a sauna ;)

@soberplantguy What did you use for the root mealies? I JUST discovered these guys on my Priktai. Why won't they let me be great?!

How tall is the tent and if you were to do it again (buy a tent) what would you do differently?
I’d say Fall is worse for spider mites. Thanks for the kind words, and hold strong at 42 for the next few months 💪
LOL
@@RiseandProcraftinate I've often wondered what it looks like from outside the house at 5:00am (guess I could find out pretty easily 🤣😂🤣)

I picked up an Argentea Princess for a reasonable price and it’s got two new leaves! Never mind the other Hoya that I killed last week, shhhh I’m good at plants 😂
Yeah, I'm just here to celebrate the successes, thank you very much 😁
Your sanitation of the emptied tent made me think of the possibility of using UV sterilizers like they use in dental offices between patients.
I wonder if that's a thing? Google is m friend..... Interesting thought!
My sister is a dental hygienist. After COVID, they installed a unit in each treatment room. After each patient, they close the door and activate a cycle that blasts the room with ultraviolet radiation. I'll ask her for some details.
I’m going to need a cutting of that Elephant! It’s the last one, I swear! 🪴Your tent set up is so amazing, Love the shelves 👍🏼
The way it's growing, I'm going to be able to take a couple of cuttings this Spring. I'm very, very impressed with this clone. Remarkable.
Carrii yellows leaves at 80 degrees plus. It happened to me right when my tent got to 80 degrees then I read it in a Hoya group.
Interesting. I can say it’s been much, much warmer in there this year, but not for a while.

Thank you!
🎉Yay!!! We finally see the tent and all those gorgeous 🪴. I was literally looking up the Mars tents yesterday to show my fiancé who wants to start growing micro greens to sell. My question is do you think it’s ok to keep houseplants and veggies in a tent or greenhouse together?

Have you seen Harli Gs grow tent?
It’s wrapped around a bamboo stake, sorta.

awesome set up and you’re so organized.

I burned some of the leaves on my Sunrise with a Sansi 10 W light trying to sun stress it. Please help.
And how do I know which levels are best?
lightsciencetech.com/what-are-par-ppf-and-ppfd-and-why-should-you-care/ This is a good article explaining *what* it is.
Some plants seem to really like/need it… others……….. grow massive aerial roots, so they will have to be moved out 😅
The tent gets lazy pest management (benificial mites seem to like it in there as well, they last longer than on plants outside of the tent or even in the cabinets)
While it has a lot of benefits, Id personally prefer to not have a tent eventually, that will not be anytime soon though, still too little space elsewhere for too many plants that I really really like/enjoy 😅
How did you treat the wood?
Doesn’t work for mealies, but having an insect screen in the window seems to work for those so far.. if they don’t come in, I wont have to deal with them 😃
I understand its not for everyone…
