I don't see the point of just keeping everything you prune, despite not having clear plans for it, though. That way insanity lies...
I'll throw one on that I was "wise" enough to do: Create a 300 plant African violet collection when you are a first-time mother to an infant as well as have a full-time job. It'll be awesome! The infant is now 22, so some water has gone under the bridge since then. I was drowning in plants and props (leaf cuttings can make MANY babies), but it was the bugs that threw me over the edge. At the time, I could MAYBE have kept up with the watering, maintenance, repotting, etc., but trying to deal with cyclamen mites and thrips on a collection that large? Game over. I went down to about 30 plants that were treated very poorly for a long, long time. Ooh! I like you! I'm very new to the hobby. Like, really new. Thankfully, I'm old-ish, I'm busy with doing new-house stuff, I have to watch my budget due to new-house stuff, and I understand the concept of learning "on the job." Living in the Mediterranean climate helps with not getting carried away, because it's very clear that my sun isn't Canadian or northern European sun, that my winters do not require central heating (but summers do require A/C, so there's that), that taking indoor plants outside for the summer here will kill them (I have to water our little garden every few days, and that's with regional and/or well established plants), and so forth, so I just can't follow anyone's advice at face value. Instead, I try to get a general idea of what a particular plant prefers, and then experiment with the conditions I have to offer it to see what works. Viewing it as a trial and error learning process is keeping me engaged and not as emotionally distraught when something doesn't work out. My one irrational indulgence was getting a maranta. Sooo, 4:30 AM Sober Plant Guy called & I listened. This is brilliant!! Thanks for having me not go back to bed. I don't know if I mentioned this here, but I now have about 200 plants in a very small office. They're all doing great strictly bc I have a little plastic name tag in every plant w/ the month & day last watered. I do 'not' care' it's not "aesthetic," bc No more sticking my finger in constantly. If it's looking great or bad I can see history and generally adjust. I almost got caught up in the flat mite craze, but remind myself it's my 'moving meditation' to get me out of my chair and to relieve stress while working, so no sweat. Cheers!
The idea that you would rely on a system that you have developed because it work for you is blasphemy 🤣😂🤣 I use the rather hot-button method of sticking a moisture meeting in the substrate. I'm not sure if I've opened that can of worms up recently 😆
Very, very funny. I just went to the store for cream and bought an un-named Hoya... probably a wayetii which I don't have yet! Thanks again for the smiles!
Too funny! I’ve never stressed over my collections. I lost a Christmas cactus once years ago & it really upset me because I didn’t know why. I got over it & haven’t had one since.
Hahahaha Very good. since I have been a plant mom since the early 70's I already had way too many plants when this sort of current plant craze hit. I lost many many plants in a severe flood in January 1997. But dear hubby rescued several of them for me risking his life going out on a literally floating living room floor and lassoed them down. Yes they were damaged but rescued. He knew the plants meant a lot to me. I am still in the prop ad give away mode because I still have a few "Mother" plants that can use a fuller pot. Mainly vining plants. Hoyas and philodendrons. But when there is no one else to pass cuttings onto I am sending them to the compost. Some of my vining plants grow so fast I am constantly chopping them. I am not at all interested in a side hustle selling plants. I love that some people do so. It is just not my idea of enjoyment. I know a lot of what you say here is tongue in cheek and I seriously enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing. I di the best I can and call it good. I am seriously trying not to buy more plants And no plants came home with my while shopping today.
I'm not precious about chopping plants--at all. I often treat them as if they're outdoor plants, where we wouldn't think twice about cutting them back and composting the leftover. And that's that 😅
@@soberplantguy I am getting better about it. After the thrips invasion of 2021, I think, and three sessions of spraying every plant in the house three times over the course of treatment, 19 hours each time through, then more for some I have ended letting plants get 5 to 6 foot tall and in huge containers. We all know our philodendrons are like weeds. I am chopping on them all the time. When the self heading philos get too big I just give them away and will no longer be buying them. I sincerely wish I had know the joy in Hoyas and Rhipsalis 50 years when I started my house plant journey.
😂 This such a great video. Although I putter and enjoy moments with my plants everyday, it’s survival of the fittest around here. If they can’t fit into my lifestyle/conditions/schedule the ‘SEE YA!’
Of the 6 new plants one was a wish list plant from the minute I saw it. Now to keep it alive. Lol 😂 I spent more on this plant than I have ever on a single plant. Yet under $100.
Great content. So funny. I can't relate as I am waiting for 11 new plants to arrive(not to mention the two I got this week) and my thoughts are elsewhere. Questions such as: do I have enough pots for them? where will I put them all? who will take the plants I wish to be rid of? should I leave them in my apartment hall by the garbage room for others to take? do I have time today to thrift for pots? throw away my props? At least I'm relaxed.
Wow, I certainly have seen some folks on YT who might find this video quite instructional! Here I am with six plants and gutted because they were doing so great and now one seems to have fungus. I feel like a failure, lol.
If I may I'd add this also, don't prune. Never cut back those precious leaves everyone of them is precious. Cutting weakens the plant. And don't get into a particular type of hoya you got to love them all. I mean it.
Lol i am lucky on my street, i leave a propagation out on the pavement and it is gone in 30 minutes. Fast growers are fun but there are onnly so many times you can enjoy restarting them, .Its probably one of the reasons i've pivoted to hoya you can rap the growth round the the trellis, or even down to make fresh soil contact unlike unlike other genus 's
@soberplantguy ha ha, I bet those unclaimed golden pothos's would become an invasive species. Its only general winter standing between them and global domination ( aside from the oceans )
I've been reading the comments and the majority of em hit it on the head as I have been through most of the points you brought up and I consider myself a novice But the more I think about it, living in northern Minnesota alongside Lake Superior ain't for sissies.
No, no, no... The best way to get a pest out break is to never treat for them and never quarantine new plants. I did this for awhile and recently had a big flat/broad mite outbreak. I get them confused. Whichever ones leave the bulbous knobby growths. That was real fun. Not! I've learned my lesson and I'm changing my ways.
@@soberplantguy Yep. I'm certainly done with my careless ways. Every be plant will be treated from here on out. I do swear by the spray you shared in your video though. I used it about 5 days before I was able to get predatory mites and I had new growth popping up on many of my plants already when I went to hang the sachets. Kinda makes me think I should've just kept going with the spray instead of getting the mites, but oh well.
@@RiseandProcraftinate "careless ways" indeed... well said! You can always re-evaluate beneficials next go round. But I'm really happy to hear your results with the DIY spray. I'm obviously a huge fan.

@@bcavanaugh3129 I'm afraid we're just that predictable 🤣
😂😂😂
Redlined my inheritance! Who's been giving you my financial information?😅
🤨
I know I've told you this before, but, you are hilarious 😂! Unfortunately, I've done every one of these steps, and am still trying to stop myself from doing any of them again. Your very facetious steps are very real steps that have taken over my plant hobby at some point or another. Thanks for pointing them out. 😂
That it's true for all of us is the only reason it's funny 😁
Oh for sure!@@soberplantguy
😂😂so so true. I don’t have any plants in a glass box. I can just imagine what those plant parents go through. I still love my 100 plus ❤ they all live happily undercover outside and still thriving. 😍😍.
Alive and thriving? You've nailed it 🤣 I don't know too terribly much about your part of the world, other than you have an enormous weather advantage over the minus zero degree winters we get here 😆 Cheers from Iowa
Now, that was one of the best videos I have ever seen! Bravo!!😅
I'm glad you enjoyed my sill little video 😆
I’m glad that you didn’t take the video seriously 🤣😆🤣
Is so true most of the time I think about it but I love my plants so much, and I keep going on ❤
Well, yeah, me too 😆 I just figured it was time to take a moment to make fun of ourselves 🤣😂🤣
So excellent Dave!! You've got the midas touch with your videos!! This is epic!!
🤣 I don’t know about epic, but thank you!
I love the fade outs between each scene! Very Andy Warhol.😂😂😂
Ive had to come and watch this again... 😂😂😂
Listen, no one is stopping you from watching this a third time 😆 But seriously, thank you so much!
Loved this 👏👏👏😂🫶
I'm so happy to hear this! I was just in the mood to try something a bit different 😊
😂 Thanks for your advice. I will get on it right away !!! Knew I was doing it all wrong 😂😂
I'm only here to help, not for the UA-cam fortune 🤣😂🤣
😂 This such a great video. Although I putter and enjoy moments with my plants everyday, it’s survival of the fittest around here. If they can’t fit into my lifestyle/conditions/schedule the ‘SEE YA!’
"It's you, not me" 🤣😂🤣
Dave, this is a really good video😳
Greetings from Korea:)
Hey, thanks! And cheers from Iowa
That was sooo good Dave 👏👏👏
I"m glad you enjoyed it 😆
Of the 6 new plants one was a wish list plant from the minute I saw it. Now to keep it alive. Lol 😂 I spent more on this plant than I have ever on a single plant. Yet under $100.
By "under $100" do you mean, $99.99? 🤣
@@soberplantguy no around $67
@@lisaanglim9588 Oh, ok. Just so you know, in the plant world ... that's called a $50 purchase 🤣😂🤣
Sounds, to me, like you’re doing things exactly correctly 🤣
You did a great job😅👏Entertaining😃🙌💞
Ah, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed my silly little video 😆
Great video..
Thank you 😊
Wow, I certainly have seen some folks on YT who might find this video quite instructional! Here I am with six plants and gutted because they were doing so great and now one seems to have fungus. I feel like a failure, lol.
There is no failing, as far as I'm concerned. I, um, "said goodbye" to no fewer than six plants last month 🤣😂🤣
@@julilla1 fungus can be good! Unless you have fungus gnats…
@@hanstera_deliciosa it's not a good one. It's causing black spots on the leaves that are then moving to other leaves.
@@julilla1 oh poo. Sorry!
This was hilarious!
I'm so delighted that you enjoyed it 😁
If I may I'd add this also, don't prune. Never cut back those precious leaves everyone of them is precious. Cutting weakens the plant.
And don't get into a particular type of hoya you got to love them all. I mean it.
"I mean it" 🤣 Yes, yes indeed......
I also find it remarkable easy to get Hoya gone. But ain't nobody wants another stinkin' pothos starter around here 😆
@soberplantguy ha ha, I bet those unclaimed golden pothos's would become an invasive species. Its only general winter standing between them and global domination ( aside from the oceans )
@@jonathonpotts5666 The oceans are no match for a golden pothos 😆

I'm glad you enjoyed a little silliness!
I've been reading the comments and the majority of em hit it on the head as I have been through most of the points you brought up and I consider myself a novice But the more I think about it, living in northern Minnesota alongside Lake Superior ain't for sissies.
Lord no! The comments are the best part of the video 🤣
Very funny and so true.
I mean, if we can’t laugh at ourselves 😁
lol 😂 I’m with you 😂
The green thumb definitely doesn’t come from learning about what plants need…. 🤣
Bingo 😆
No, no, no... The best way to get a pest out break is to never treat for them and never quarantine new plants. I did this for awhile and recently had a big flat/broad mite outbreak. I get them confused. Whichever ones leave the bulbous knobby growths. That was real fun. Not! I've learned my lesson and I'm changing my ways.
Those little buggers really will get you to change your ways. I wouldn't even give spider mites a sideways glance. But flat mites? Oy.
