Evercade Indie Heroes LEGACY Conundrum | PK in the Universe
In retrospect, the swimming level from the first TMNT game was a good lesson in persistence as a child. I remember how great it felt to finally get through that level after what felt like millions of failed attempts. Passing the controller to friends is an experience shared uniquely by our generation.
Damn that sucks PK! I'll make sure to avoid that place. I also recently ordered from DKOldies and had no issues.
Even though I haven't sold a lot of video game products because of the countless horror stories I've heard dealing with incredibly cheap, greedy, and manipulative people - I have enough foresight to cut them off if I detect the slightest inkling that they're going to be difficult. I'm lucky enough that I have a really good friend that helps sell me portions of my collection and I pay him a fee to help me sell it so at least he can get a little bit of profit out of it. I wish game stores would realize that reputation is everything and if enough people have problems with you and your business tactics then your going to lose your business soon enough. You can only get away with a certain of bullshit for too long.
It took me forever to notice that the 1989 TMNT arcade game was basically a playable version of the first season of the 1987 animated series. The stages are designed to follow the plot of the first season.
I like the NES version more than the arcade version. For some reason the hit responses in this game AND turtles in time feel way better than they do in their arcade counterparts for some reason.
Vampire Mike sent me, awesome video but wow these stories are insane
Mike is a good dude! Thank you ! Yeah, I don’t know how some people stay in business or why they act this way, it’s just wild !
I've been to that store in Erie! I think I bought a few Genesis games there like a decade ago!
I definitely wanna check out that place when I go visit my folks next time.
I also had a guy who would low ball me on every item I sold and then eventually got one and said oh it doesn't work well, can I have X amount off. Eventually I blocked him too, he was extremely cheap and annoying to deal with. It was old Apple products my wife had that were just sitting in a drawer.
People are so scummy.
Yeah, I've had to do partial refunds and gotten them here or there with small issues. Good on you pal.
Yeah, some of the stuff is just the cost of doing business. I try my best to keep people happy.
I've been on Ebay since I was a kid, using it as my dad. I got one negative for the first time I can remember last year. The guy was very rude and wanted me to mail his dvd on a Sunday. It went out Monday, he got it a few days later and then left me a negative review that said, "not good". So I wrote to ebay and they got it removed and I blocked him. lol.
Glad you could get that negative review removed. I think people are really spoiled by Amazon and no longer have a grip on reality of how long things are supposed to take to get to places. People are so terminally online they no longer consider what type of impact they’re gonna have on others.
That sucks man. Ive been to a lot of retro stores and had great experiences at almost all of them. I hate to hear about these kind of bad places. Good on you calling it out.
Same here, there’s a lot of good retro game stores that treat people right . It’s unfortunate the terrible places like this exist and somehow stay in business with that kind of customer service.
I got this for Christmas when it came out and felt like the luckiest person ever. Took me a few tries to get through it. The Shogun level kicked my butt several times. Vincent Van Growl? 🐯 "Spring is here!"
I've often thought a can of fish in liquid opened to mature for a while..., and then poured in the right place would be a fun game to try. 😜
That’s wild !
Turtles 2 the arcade game was a fool's errand like many games of the time that tried give us the best version they could of an arcade port. So much gets lost in translation, as the NES ports of smash arcade games fell short massively. Even some of the Snes ports failed like Final Fight, as was only single player and lost levels. Double Dragon 1 was only one player, and added a bunch of annoying platforming to a beat em up game with tank like controls. Plenty of NES ports just weren't up to snuff with the Arcade version, as the difference between the tech on consoles and arcade machines was too massive to compete on any reasonable level. This was of course why people would spent the quarters, since you were getting something you weren't getting at home.(Till more recently as modern hardware easily can handle any 90s arcade games.) The two biggest issues with turtles 2 that couldn't ever overcome or fix that left it forever in the shadow of the arcade game it's a port of is the combat and the 4 player mode. (This one was understandable since the NES couldn't handle that many characters on screen, or players would always outnumber the bad guys heh.) The combat in the arcade game, you had a point in using the regular attack, as it comboed enemies, and tossed them over your head to defeat them. In the NES game, enemies just stagger and invincible for a moment then typically hit you back , making the regular attack fairly useless outside of reflecting back tossed objects or launching objects on the street to hit enemies. This really screws up the flow of basic combat. You are forced to master the jump+attack to complete the NES version for most normal enemies. You need to just kick bosses to death, as it's only reasonable answer to their invinciblity frames. Again you can't combo them with attacks, so it devolves the combat greatly. The arcade version you could jump in and then combo the bosses with regular attacks or jump attack in the air, then launch a second one when you landed. The bosses would generally get knocked back or down, so this game you options of how fight them. The NES game was less fun as a result of this. That said, Konami knew what they were up against, and tried add something to make it's own unique experience from the Arcade version. Giving two unique levels and bosses was cool, just I felt their placement in the game was a wonky. The snow level doesn't feel organic, as we go from pursuing April, to side tracking to defrost NYC, then go back to rescuing April. The game felt like it should stuck to one of these threads. The dojo stage being the penultimate stage felt more in line. I get these were last minute additions, but for all remakes fans do, I am surprised someone hasn't made a version where these get more organic placed into the story and stages. I think this lesson served Konami well though, as they were better at handling the port of Turtles in time, as the home version on Snes feels like the superior version in many ways. They were able to make entire levels that fit organicly into the game' s story and design that felt like they should always been there. Again I wish we could get a remaster that gives us a full version, as Reshelled failed to be that in so many ways. Of the home ports Turtles in time was by far the best of the TMNT games. Konami clearly got better with each installment and learned what worked and what didn't. As far as playing the nes game, I agree it's a product of it's time and limitations. This makes it far less awesome than playing a port of the actual arcade game. I'd much rather play the arcade game over the nes port any day. Not say the NES game is not without it's charms but it was never going stack up to it. It's still impressive that could cram a decent version of the game into what they did. Sacrifices were going be made, but not so many that makes the game unplayable. I feel they really needed to focus on making the best game(As best NES games focus on doing what works for them rather than try give us a watered down version of something else.) they could rather than try translate the Arcade version they best they could. I get why they did, as they already left fans feeling like a bait and switch with the first NES title. They had give them the Arcade game in some form. Like I said this was a fool's errand. Doing anything too different, and people would been mad, but they couldn't match their arcade game either. Home system games ultimately need to stand on their own merits , not just this is the best we could get of it at the time. With much better options now, I would not recommend playing it over the other titles other than to see the stepping stones of the series for those who were curious. Some beat em ups are timeless(Such as Streets of Rage 2), Turtles 2 is not one of them.
after they sent you back your ps2 id check the seriel # etc, make sure they didnt swap it out with one of their janky ones or take parts out of yours.
Yeah, I knew they sent me at the back the right one. It had very distinguishable features. From what I could tell, they didn’t open it up, but who knows maybe they did.
i remember ebay siding with a buyer who had bought a figure from me as the buyer said theyd paid and hadnt recieved the item. this was 2 days after the auction ended. i had sent ebay a tracking number and knew that theyd recieved the figure but ebay refunded their money.
I really hate how much eBay sides with the buyer. Unfortunately, everybody who sells is a dime a dozen, with a ridiculous selling fees, it hardly seems worth it anymore.
about 17 years ago i bought a pc engine duo r from a well known game import store on ebay, took about a month and when it came it was in a thinly padded bubble mailer envelope! i was new to ebay and was thankful something came at all and i dont remember calling them out but till this day it still pisses me off as they charged like 30.00 for shipping and handling.
I know what you mean, I bought an N64 game once and it got sent in a bubble wrapper and the cartridge was partially cracked. I was new to eBay, and I looked back and should’ve asked for a refund.
I liked it ok. Would I play it today, probably not. Turtles in time for SNES was the real game changer
yeah it was great for what it is and what its on, but Turtles in Time was on a whole other level.
I still play it. I love it but since I usually prefer to play games by myself it works for me I guess
Totally understandable. Sometimes it's more fun to play by yourself and just drink in the moment.
Turtles II is the most nostalgic one for me as far as the NES games go, but it’s the one I find myself going back to the least. I’ve come to appreciate the first game more as I’ve gotten older, the third game is head and shoulders the best, and the fighting game is as interesting as it is impressive.
Absolutely on all counts! People don't talk nearly enough about TMNT: TF on NES, it was incredible they got that to be as good as it was.
Battle Nexus for GameCube had TMNT 2 NES as an unlockable feature which was awesome to play this game on GameCube. Battle Nexus is also a good game that gets overlooked
I have Battle Nexus on Xbox, it's very underrated for sure.
Great video man! Also, you must be Canadian.... 3:27....I grew up in a small town in Ontario, and I.G.A. was the only grocery store we had
IGA's were definitely a North America thing, I grew up near Rantoul, Illinois in a real small town.
Got TMNT2 for Christmas, from my brother. I can't complain, since i asked for Bart vs the space mutants. My bro did me a solid, with me not even realizing it at the time... Plus, there was no Pizza Hut where i lived, so i had a useless coupon...
You definitely got a good deal there!
I always thought that them NOT making a Tora (the polar bear? Or wolf) from the Central Park level- Toy was a huge mistake. They could have easily made a quick backstory for him in the Archie Ninja Turtle comics. I assumed he was a polar bear because he’d throw ice blocks at you… but yeah a weird one of exclusive I think ONLY ever referenced in THIS game (and ONLY in the home port) he wasn’t part of the Arcade original
Until the “Sega Genesis” came out of course! Fixed it for you:-)
Loved this version and would finish it frequently, it was all about patterns. I miss those times 😢
It was an incredible time to be a kid !
@@PKInTheUniverse10000% agreed
I prefer the nes version way over the arcade version. Graphics aren’t everything.
Absolutely! I like the extra levels on the NES.
This game was and still is awesome! Fantastic beat em up
100% agree with you, I still keep coming back to it.
I had this game. I loved it then and I still do now.
Same here!
I remember watching Nintendo doing a demo of this game at the championship they used footage of the arcade game claiming this was in the game I was so disappointed Christmas day. This game is not a bad game. TMNT IV on SNES was the first game that really felt like the arcade.
I can imagine that would be a huge letdown. I experienced the NES game before I played the arcade so that definitely influenced my perception. TMNT IV definitely felt like the arcade but it was cool they had some radical differences that made each experience unique.
Great video. I got TMNT first for the NES around 1989 and then TMNT II for my Christmas of '90 when I was 11. I definitely used that Pizza Hut coupon too. Lol. Still have my cart in the box
That's awesome! I definitely used my pizza hut coupon when i was a kid. I bought this particular manual and box about 12 years ago.
I still very much enjoy this game. Classic.
it really is. It's incredible window in time when Konami really wanted to create a unique experience while building off an existing game.
5:15 Now there's a visual memory. Where can that Pizza Hut experience be found today? Those lamps go for hundreds on eBay.
I think there still are some sit down pizza huts , but not very many, and food is defintely not what it was 30 years ago. Back in 2014 my town still had a sit down pizza hut and I took my girlfriend ( who is now my wife) and we both felt sick afterwards. I remember the place had a pac-man arcade.
Grab in a fire? Just get insurance
I'm just making a point. I keep my cartridge based games in metal library card holder, they'd probably survive the fire the way that thing is built. I have my original Super Nintendo that bought with my own money when I was ten years old. There are some things that insurance can't replace.
@PKInTheUniverse I'd get insurance and go with emulation instead aging hardware personally. When snes first came out I wanted one bad and couldn't get one but I did end up owning 3 through the course of time. You're getting older so you're not going to be as athletic when you should be using your head.
Hi, Nick here from the UK! This is such a beloved game for me. My first NES was the Turtles pack, which I don’t think was available in the States. It came in a TMNT-branded box with the first Turtles game. At the time, I thought it would be the arcade game, but it wasn’t. I actually discovered the arcade version during a holiday in the U.S. in 1990. To play it at home, I had to modify my NES to be region-free, but it was worth it-I had so much fun! It was the closest I could get to the arcade experience back then. That said, the game is LONG, and as you mentioned, by the time you get to Shredder, you’re often too drained to finish! These days, I play it on an RGB-modded NES hooked up to a high-end CRT. The quality is amazing-it’s a luxury compared to playing on RF back in the day. It’s still a lot of fun, but like you said, playing these games as an adult is a very different experience compared to being a kid.
I've always been jealous of you folks across the pond who got that sweet Teenage Mutant Heroes Turtles NES box, I wish we'd gotten something like that over here. Yeah we don't know how good we got it sometimes, everyone forgets we used to play using RF switch.
@PKInTheUniverse It wasn't an actual box. It was a standard NES box but with a glossy sleeve branded with TMNT / NES. But it looks like a box overall. Don't be too jealous. When I came to the US I couldn't believe the range of accessories and games you had. I think they only released stuff in the UK that had proven successful in the states, so we didn't get everything. I still have my TMNT arcade game from 1990 and still play it to this day. I also still can't beat the shredder 😂
It is a fantastic game but you are right that you can’t replicate the experience from back then. I’m sorry to hear about the passing of your old friend. I had a friend named Josh that owned this game back in the day that we would play at his house, hope he’s doing okay.
Yeah we were truly immersed in TMNT back then , every kid in school had a favorite turtle. Thank man, we had lost touch over time, but I'll never forget the fun games we played together. It's crazy how fast time just keeps on moving.
The instruction book came with a coupon on the back for a free personal pizza from pizza hut. I redeemed mine on the last day it was good. Cowa-unga-bunga
yeah, i redeemed mine as well. I bought this manual like 12 years ago, I can't believe there were kids who never redeemed it back in the day.
I still think it was great for what that console could do at the time
it was incredible at the time!
We had the Book It! program at school where you read books to collect stickers which would get you a free personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut. Pizza Hut had the TMNT arcade game! On days where we finally got that free pizza, if you went to Pizza Hut you'd definitely be playing TMNT Arcade with several of your classmates. Having it at home was godly... I played the NES version a billion times. Now I'd go for the arcade version on MAME, for sure, but I have plenty of nostalgia for the NES version too.
It was such a wonderful moment in time. Things seemed so simpler back then.
Hi mate.. i really enjoyed this ! Great memories bro.. one of my all time fav games ❤ - New subscriber here.. great job man
Thanks you! It was incredible time to be a kid. I think I've heard of your channel before , I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the sub!
So true! Every once in a while, I get the urge to play an old game. I get super excited and play it, n yeah, it's not what I wa expecting. It's just not the same. I think part of it has to do with knowing there's more and better options out there but also the fact that I have responsibilities now. I had no cares back then. Lol
Yeah, I still love this game as much as I did when I was a kid, but I can't unlearn what has come after it, and I don't think that's a bad thing either.
What’s this guy going on about? This game is still holds up. Nostalgia or not.
It still holds up, but I can't go back in time and be 9 years old again. When I was in school , everyone I knew had a favorite Ninja Turtle. If my son walked into school and asked every boy in his class what their favorite Turtle is very few would have an answer. That's how big of penomena TMNT was back then, it was ingrained in our culture. It's still cool and it's still popular, but time has moved forward.
This game was my first experience with a beat em up and I loved it.
I still really enjoy it. i think my first beat em up experience was renting double dragon
My father gave me a Sega Genesis with one game he found in the trunk of a car he bought. The console smelled like exhaust fumes, but it and the controller worked. The game? High Seas Havoc, a Sonic ripoff. I played that game many times, learned most of its secrets, and eventually beat it. It's the fond memories a game brings forward that makes it special to us. Dad didn't give two hoots about the Sega, but that particular game will always remind me of him.
I know that feeling . Whenever I look at the Wii U , I see my wife because she bought it for me in 2015 when we didn't have much money at the time and we had just gotten engaged. It also why I'm way over sensitive when people talk trash about the Wii U.
To me I think this is a good game but its not better then arcade version or the japanese version.
I still need to check out the famicom version
@@PKInTheUniverse The Famicom version is easier but I like it better that way. Doing jump kick does more damage and pulling out your speical move is easier.
