What drives me nuts in particular is that yeah, these cartridges get discontinued, and then obviously still being aware of this fact, Blaze sticks a FOMO inducing "library" feature on their Evercade OS.

I 💯 percent agree with you! I made a video talking about the library thing and how it’s basically an ad posing as a library. I refuse to update my Evercade VS because of it.

I doubt if incube8 continues the relationship there will be a true "variant" cart situation created because Blaze will likely be required to patch the cart to update the ROM on all existing carts and it will likely be one of the annoying updates that don't tell you the update is happening (so you can't refuse it). The not funny truth is that it is likely this will kill more original IH2 carts than it would update, causing Blaze to have to send warranty replacements which would of course be the updated version of the cart. Only unused carts and carts used only on modded consoles would likely eligible for the title of "original variant" 😂

Oh man, that would be hilarious if they pulled something like that. Classic Blaze trying to fix problems that aren’t really there and bricking games on top of it. I regret updating my Jaleco 1 cart , they have robbed me of my nostalgia of Rival Turf 🤣. Ever since I patched my VS and OG Evercade with the Ever SD patches I’ve had no desire to ever go back. I’m sure there would be a bunch around of the original variant just because of how many people collect Evercade and never open the boxes.

Great to see you covering Evercade content PK, you were one of the first UA-camrs I watched when I was entering this mad world. Eagle eyes on Luna Journey and the Legacy next theory.

Atari have also bought the Accolade games on Piko Collection 2 so that could be next as it's been on sale for 3 years already. But as you've alluded to with other systems, everything will be legacy in a few years.

That’s right, they do own Hoops shut up and jam 1 & 2 . Someone had told me about that and I totally forgot until you brought it up. I wonder if those collections have sold so poorly because of the nature of the titles that might be the reason blaze hasn’t brought it up.

In publishing, licensing typically operates differently: Blaze, as the publisher, must pay developers (or the studio) an advance and guarantee sales. If sales do not meet expectations, Blaze will cover the shortfall. Therefore, Blaze has decided against taking a risk on older Atari games, for example, because they are unlikely to sell in the large quantities required by the contract.
If a game’s sales begin to decline, it becomes a candidate for becoming legacy, as Blaze may choose not to renew the contract with the owner. To predict which games might eventually become legacy, you can look up reviews online and check their sales figures. The lower the sales, the higher the likelihood that the game will become rare and be considered a legacy game.

Yes, it’s possible that either or both parties could decide not to continue on after the contracts are up

From what I've heard, blaze could update the indie Heroes 2 cart to include the new lunar journey ROM. You insert the cart into an evercade and update the cart. At this point it doesn't seem to be much of a priority.

Someone said that to me the other day, I wouldn’t put it past blaze to do that. I wish I still had a copy of Jaleco 1 that was never updated. I’ve just stopped connecting my Evercade VS to the Internet at this point.

Hard to tell which ones will go legacy. My hope is none but the physical media market is so borked right now that digital is sounding more and more appealing every day

There are definitely some kick starters. I would’ve backed a few years ago that today I would not and just buy the digital version when it comes out especially nes and game boy games. At least with Evercade there was a bunch of games on there that were cheap but I find myself questioning whether I want to continue to fill the space that I have.

All three will be out of production at some point. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but they will be legacy cartridges at some point.

I guess at the end they all become legacy

I do wonder if major publishers have a time period or quantity contract in place whilst indie publishers such as Mega Cat have a rolling contract deal. Using Mega Cat as a theoretical example, I don't think it'll formally go "Legacy" - once the sales eventually stop trickling in they'll simply not request a new production batch, to which they could easily reassess if they wish.

I’m just really surprised no one’s tried to make their own Evercade cartridges and publish them independently ( sort of like Tengen AKA Atari did back in the NES days). These things aren’t that much different than a GBA cart so I think reverse engineering would not be that difficult. Of course the only issue is blaze could find a way to lock those games out through an update.

If I didn't pick them up, I wasn't interested so 🤷. They should know let us know its legacy thats good to know

I just don’t think it’s a big deal. The problem ultimately is when people find out it’s going out of production you see resellers trying to buy up all the stock of them to flip. It ultimately accelerates price hikes and incentivizes people who would normally not buy them to buy them. And that’s not even considering people who are late to the party.
