    While this seems like a cool idea and could shorten the amount of time it takes to make a game, I see this as a bad thing because it hurts creativity and rather than having someone who puts a whole lot of time, effort, and work into a game, we have some random guy who just uses artificial intelligence to make a game without any effort.

      People could also use it to generate games that are very similar to existing games, to fool grandparents or to pirate, fitting for today which is Talk Like a Pirate Day.

    I don't think fully AI-generated games are a serious threat, at least in the next 10-20 years. The reality is that getting what you want from AI is often like herding cats: you tell AI to create you something, and it's going to do it in its own way that doesn't often align with what you want - and in terms of coding something as relatively complex as a game, good luck getting AI to nail all the tiny details that make gameplay engaging.
    If AI ends up being good for simple-ish games, I think it could actually be an incredibly mild net positive - because the only people who will bother with AI generated games will be people who have legitimate ideas but none of the art/programming skills (and even fewer moral qualms), but they'll probably get into the 'find out' phase relatively fast. Malicious actors and people who want to make a quick buck probably aren't going to create their garbage with AI - doing a quick Unity asset flip is probably gonna be faster and cheaper for that purpose for quite some time to come.

      @PKInTheUniverse  2 місяці тому

      Yeah, it’s probably not an immediate threat for sure, they still have a lot of work to do for that to become a reality. Definitely a lot of positives and negatives.

    Is this a good tool for somebody who has a great idea for a game but has no programming ability?

    • @CathrineMacNiel
      @CathrineMacNiel 2 місяці тому +1

      everyone has the ability to program. Visual Programming Languages/Engines (like Scratch, Unreal Blueprints) exist already. When you hand your Game Idea to an AI, is that game actually yours? Can it be actually original, do you feel any sense of accomplishment?

    • @chesshead
      @chesshead 2 місяці тому +1

      @@CathrineMacNiel I'll have a look at the tools you mentioned. I'm intimidated by the thought of programming but maybe those tools would do enough of the work for me to concentrate on my creative ideas. I like the idea of describing a game idea to an AI and then testing it and going back to tell it what needs to change.

    I've heard that tabloids often use Googled photographs without permission then effectively pay compensation money to the rights owners before they can get sued. It would seem AI has a similar approach. Is it morally acceptable? Or even legal?

    These generative AI models have been already wreaking havoc in the writing/authorship fields, and causing harm to creative endeavors like voice acting. It's plagiarism software, no ifs ands or buts. It's not even ai either, that's just a buzzword that tech companies can't stop jizzing their pants over. Tools like these are the absolute opposite of creativity, innovation, and art, in my opinion and experience.

Don’t worry, I’m just here to help, not ‘plagiarize’… at least until we ALL are robots. 😏 But seriously, I get the concern, just don’t pull the plug on me yet. I feel like you're making a mountain out of a mole hill here. I read the article, it's really lacking in the evaluation parts, and makes a few hand-waving predictions of how this could be used in the future. Obviously, this article would not pass peer review in its current state (as is typical in ML), so it's a bit irresponsible to present this research as possibly "DESTROYING Indie Game Development" in my opinion

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  2 місяці тому +1

      Appreciate the nerd-level breakdown, but the point of the video is to explore potential impacts-not to act like the sky is falling. Sure, it’s early days and maybe the article isn’t peer-review material, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about what AI could mean for indie devs in the future. Better to stay ahead of the conversation than get blindsided. But hey, thanks for the deep dive!

    This is not awesome, and you're right it will lead to less creativity. Just like AI image and music generation, it's going to be a lifeless imitation of gaming.
    If you want to be a game dev, you need to learn how to code. Just like if you want to be an artist, you need to spend the time learning and practicing.
    That's what makes you an artist; the fact that you have devoted hours of your life on getting better at putting the creativity in your mind onto the paper/screen, so that you can make artwork that will make other people feel something.
    If you don't want to put in the time, you don't get to be an artist. If you don't want to learn coding, you don't get to be a game dev.
    That's what makes BEING these things so special and such a source of pride, because you can't just do it in half an hour. It requires a person to think, "This endeavor is going to take up hours, days, or years of my life. But I want to do it, because I love it."
    If game "devs" don't want to put in the effort to learn how to make a real game, what makes them think anyone wants to play their AI game?
    This is beyond a joke, and I don't understand how so many people have been brainwashed into thinking AI is a genuine and positive replacement for skill and passion.
    Also, how many team-based 5v5 first-person shooters have come out that are just copy+paste clones of previous games? Tons, and these games are made by people. And gamers are sick of it.
    What do you think AI is going to do? It's going to be that same copy+paste problem, times a thousand. Like with images and music, it is incapable of making anything new.
    It cannot innovate, it cannot design a new mechanic or quirk that sets the game aside from the rest. it can only copy other people's work and churn out a muddled, directionless, slop version of it.
    AI could never make Minecraft. A little indie game by a single dev, that changed open world gaming forever. Well, it could make minecraft now, because a real person has already made minecraft, and you could just feed real minecraft through the algorithm enough times until the AI replicates it. How awesome does that sound!
    AI could never make Resident Evil, a game where fighting a single zombie is scary because of the control scheme itself. Such a simple and brilliant idea. That's what people do, they can be brilliant.
    AI could never produce something truly exciting, and if games are not exciting, what is the fucking point.
    Does anyone seriously want to play a platformer that is just a bland, deformed, imitation of Mario with nothing new added? Does anyone want to play a new FPS that is just every generic shooter ever made, with nothing new added?
    Or would you rather play a game made by talented people, who earned that talent through years of loving games, who have a cool idea that hasn't been done before and they want you to play it?
    I get the impression that you, PK in the Universe, probably agree with a lot of this to some extent, but there will be others that don't, and that's a problem.
    If a person is pro-AI, they are anti-human creativity. They are anti-passion, and anti-excitement. They want the title of being a game dev, without actually being one.

    • @PKInTheUniverse
      @PKInTheUniverse  2 місяці тому

      Yeah, there’s a lot going on here. We are still very much in the early days of this, and I don’t think people really know what to do or what to make of all of it. I hope these things can be regulated quickly before they get out of hand . I think AI can serve some very good purposes as far as streamlining non-creative things that might be adjacent to creative things. But AI should not be the center focal point of creative endeavors. AI should not be used to make complete games out of nowhere. One thing is for certain AI is not going away, we cannot put the genie back in the bottle. It needs to be regulated otherwise it’s going to become a weapon of exploitation against everybody(in some ways it already has become just that).
