The Secret to Becoming a "Real" Knitter!
This is a video about the ONE THING that is (in my humble opinion) THE most important thing a knitter can know and understand. I won't give it away just yet, but you don't have to watch much of the video to find out. ALSO, I have a VERY special guest appearance in this episode. Totally worth watching at least that far... *Grin*

    If you're not familiar with Ann Budd's books "Knitting Socks" "The Knitter's Handy Book of Top-Down Sweaters" "The Knitter's Handbook of Sweater Patterns" and "The Knitter's Handbook of Patterns" you should really check them out. They are written very differently from most pattern books. First you pick your yarn and needles, decide what you want to make, and then use the charts for the basic designs she has outlines to figure out how many stitches to use at what point of the pattern based on YOUR gauge, not the other way around. After using a few of these patterns, I've been able to make quite a number of tops, etc. without a standard pattern, or even how to do a copycat version of a top I already have and love, but it's either no longer the right size, or about worn out. They have been quite the learning experience. At any rate, everything is based on your swatch.

    I am a spinner - you can twist the two yarns together - however, pay attention to the direction of the twist of the yarns. There is an S twist and a Z twist. Both yarns you are marling should have the same direction of twist. And when you go to twist them, go in the opposite direction! Otherwise you will have a curling, knotted mess! If you don't understand S and Z twist or cant' tell which is which, google it and there are many illustrations that will show you better than I can explain it.

    Swatching is essential for me. I don't usually use a pattern. I generally do my work based on measurements. And even if I do use a pattern, it's more often than not, just a general guideline. So, without knowing my gauge (both before and after blocking - and determine the difference ratio), I wouldn't be able to do anything that requires specific measurements. I'd be limited to scarfs (that I don't wear that often,) dishcloths, towels, blankets, etc. No tops, socks, hats, gloves, etc. My swatches are generally on at least 50 stitches and over 4-5 inches in length.

    This is wonderful info. I had been using the beaded chain w/detachable charms to count up to 99 rows, and locking markers in the rows to keep track of my increases/decreases. But, I'm thinking this might be a wonderful use for the barber cord that I purchased and had not really found a good use for. I'm thinking it might just replace both of my previous methods. Or at least be a backup method. Especially for when I got distracted at the place my chain marker was placed, and it fell off the needle, leaving me wondering if I could remember where I was. Thank you for teaching this old dog some new tricks!

    Believe it or not, I had been knitting for about 50 years before I realized / or anyone told me / about twisted stitches or the leading leg issue of a stitch. I've been knitting for 58 years now, and this is the absolute clearest explanation I've ever seen. I knew before that that occasionally I'd have stitches that looked funny, but I didn't understand why until I learned this detail. Hopefully, this will help other knitters avoid years of not knowing, like I did. Thanks.

    Would I just get the same amount of yarn in the shawl pattern or would I have to modify how much yarn I get?

    • @Knicoleknits
      @Knicoleknits День тому

      It's going to vary from shawl to shawl, but so far I haven't had an issue with not having enough yarn with my modifications. If you're willing to do the math, you could calculate the total area of each version and see if your modified version is significantly bigger. I'm going to make a note of this for next time I talk about this method. 👍

    OMG, this is such a great tip. I am definitely going to use this idea. Right now I just tally my rows on paper. When I cast on I use circle markers to keep track of my count. This seems easier. I also am a big fan of lifelines. I’d love to buy a set of needles that have the hole so you can drag the line through while you knit.

    Now I’m working on learning continental knitting. But… I’ve learned that you can use a smaller size needle when purling to even out the tension. Now I’m combination knitting (which was quite easy to learn), but while knitting stockinette, the stitches tend to lean the opposite way from the previous row. I figure it has something to do with the twist of the yarn - like you’re twisting the yarn in one direction for the knit stitch then untwisting it for the purl stitch. Blocking helps a bit. Something to explore further using various yarns. Thanks for the advice. 🧶

    • @Knicoleknits
      @Knicoleknits День тому

      You're right that yarn twist can affect how your stitches look. If you have a ball winder, you can try winding a ball twice, then pulling from the outside of the cake instead of the middle. This can help quite a bit with keeping twist under control 😊

    • @MOLLIMEDIA
      @MOLLIMEDIA День тому

And I knew that it definitely changed the gauge of your knitting. Wonderful video. Now I finally know what a leading leg is and why. I have twisted many stitches many times, now I know what to look for. I need to how to add or subtract a yarn over. I’m doing a sweater now that is all yo very hard to keep count. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ripped it apart. It’s me against this sweater and I’m going to win😂. • @Knicoleknits
      @Knicoleknits День тому

      Oh dang! I forgot to include how to create a missing yarn over. What you need to do is use the same action as picking up a dropped stitch, but your first "loop" will be created by grabbing a strand between two stiches and treating that as if it were a yarn over. This might be a bit tricky without a visual, but give it a try!

    Hi Nicole, I noticed that when cabling you knit the first 2 cable stitches, you knit into the back of them. Is this right please, and can you tell us (me) why you do this? Many thanks, Linda 🧶😊

    • @Knicoleknits
      @Knicoleknits День тому

      Hi, Linda! Probably in my knitting back and forth, I purled some stitches with an eastern wrap instead of standard, so I had to correct the seat of the stitch by knitting into the back. Sometimes I do this unconsciously and forget to mention it in the video. If you watch either my video on combined vs continental knitting or my most recent post on how to be a "real" knitter, you'll find the whole explanation 😀

    My husband is patient and rewinds often so i can take pictures of the beautiful knits i see. Yes, i have knitted some, but not all. They give me great ideas, but i never search for a pattern like you do. I knit from my ideas then make a plan and knit it. I love the knitted sweater turned into cardi. Its beautiful. The only way i can think of to fix it is to dye the whole sweater a soft color. It will no longer be white but choose a color that will go well with green, but not change the green colors. Ive done this before and it turned out well for me. LOVE your ideas.

The arm lengths, the sweater lengths, armhole shortened, and lately, I turned a long sleeve cardigan to a 3/4 sleeve and a more snug fit just by washing. So, yes, I've done many things to fix the problem. Including completely ripping it all back to yarn balls. LOVE your ideas.
