I am still a beginner knitter, so I'm quite slow (and I still crochet most of the time) which means my projects take a long time to finish. I don't think I will be able to keep up with the KAL, so I think I will try the pattern in your video or look up some other patterns to try in my own pace :) Thank you for the inspiration!
Excellent! I love mosaic crochet too. You can check out my crochet episode to see badly I failed at it before getting it right...lol. I think mosaic knitting is easier than mosaic crochet (but I might be biased). Let me know how it goes or if you need any help!!
Ooh, I will definitely look up that video! And thank you, I will for sure ask for help if I get stuck. You made it seem so easy in your video so my fingers are crossed that I will be able to do it :D Right now I am trying lace knitting for the first time, with the Farnese shawl by Paula Wiśniewska (Polka Knits). I think I will try the mosaic knitting after completing this shawl.
It's so inspiring to see what can be created in crochet! I came to knitting first so crochet is so fing difficult to wrap my brain around, but powering through the block 😂 amazing to see the beautiful things!
Nicole, I just love your podcasts and martinis too! I look forward to meeting you on an Island fleece fest. Meanwhile I wanted to remark that your mustard/gray cowl may also be more quiet because you used stocking stitch on the purl side rather than the garter stitch. I find this mosaic approach is a terrific stash buster.
Hi! You can find me at Fibrations in Victoria this Sunday, or at the Cowichan Fleece and Fibre fest in October 😊 I think you're right about the difference between stockinette and garter in my cowl. I was being lazy and just wanted to knit every round 😋
I really enjoyed this video for mosaic knitting, i had no idea how much fun it could be! Thankyou for sourcing Barbara Walker’s book. These charts can also be used for mosaic crochet!!! What a treasure trove 🤗 Thankyou for a very fun video!
I loved this video, but I guess since I am a beginner I wish you had explained the other styles that you listed. I feel like you only demonstrated garter done flat, but could you demonstrate stockinette done flat, garter in the round and stockinette in the round? I was really excited to see ALL of these demonstrated and to understand the differences.❤🧶
H Nicole, I’m so glad I’ve your channel- you are teaching me so many cool things 😁🧶I also really enjoy your sense of fun. Best wishes from Australia 🇦🇺
I found this video very intriguing. I had never really understood mosaic knitting before this. Your explanation was perfectly clear! I took the sample chart and did a "test" swatch with three version of the colorwork -- I did one repeat in garter stitch mosaic, one repeat in stocking stitch mosaic and a final repeat in fair isle (purling the even # rows). I discovered I did not like the garter stitch for a few reasons - I had to remember to bring the yarn to the front when slipping the stiches, and I didn't care for the look of the finished pattern. I liked the stocking stitch better because I preferred the smoother look and the ease of stitching. When you are purling back, the yard is already on the back of the work. Very interesting lesson - THANK YOU!!!
I enjoyed this episode, thank you. I am knitting the pressed flowers cardigan for my 50th wedding anniversary! It’s not my first mosaic, but I have to say it takes me a while to get going, but then it flies!
I have never done a knit along before and I think I have to do this one!!!!! How do I sign up? That shawl has been on my wish list for awhile but didn’t want another shawl.

I've had 10 skeins of khaki and 2 skeins of dark purple Drops Silke-Tweed for the last12 years cuz I couldn't decide what to do with it. I finally decided to do a solid color cardigan and have finished 2/3 of it from the top down. Now after seeing how easy mosaics are I'm thinking I need to frog back a ways and add some mosaic to it. I guess I need to try it on to decide where to put it. Thanks Nicole, you just added some excitement to a boring knit. One question. Is there a trick to measuring sleeve length for a raglan sweater?
Yay! I hope you have great fun playing with mosaic in your project. As for sleeve length, I usually focus on the measurement between the underarm and the desired sleeve length. That point can vary quite a bit depending on the fit. If it's a close fitting sweater, that underarm point is probably higher and so the sleeve would need to be longer. On a loose fit, the point would be lower and farther out, so the sleeve would end up shorter. Does that help? If you have more questions, let me know 😊
You gave me the urge of trying that technique! I look at your knitting needles and I find them so nice... they are sharp and seem to work very well. What brand are they? Thank you for showing us all that!
Thank you! They are Signature brand needles, but sadly they stopped making them last year. You might be able to track them down used somewhere. I’m still on the lookout for ones I like as much as these 😊
I’m in for the KAL I have watch several of your you tube and have tried to play with converting pattern for your wrap overs. My question if we buy knit will there be enough yarn for the wrap over. IM SO EXCITED. I have done mosaic knitting and love it.
Natasha Hornsby, Catlin Hunter, Jennifer Beale have incredible patterns, but many are charted only. I'm trying to learn charts. Great points for all that are fearful or haven't tried it. I love slip-stitch patterns. I have not done much chart work. How do you locate increasing on a slip-stitch cart?
Hi Knicole, I downloaded your practice chart. I loved it and found the knitting process quite easy -- but (there's always a "but", right?) my finished practice piece did not look like the design. I suspect it had something to do with me not knowing what to do with the red outlined section (my practice piece was 32 stitches wide). I looked for your guidance on the red outlined area, but couldn't find it. Can you give me a time stamp so I can locate it? Thanks!
Oh my goodness! You're right - I just went back and watched and I didn't address how the outlined repeat section works. My apologies! Here's how you do it: If you only cast on 11 sts, then you work the chart exactly as shown. BUT, if you want to cast on more stitches, you're going to add them in multiples of 8 because there are 8 stitches inside the RED repeat lines. So, let's say you cast on 19 stitches. Now you're going to work the chart up to and including stitch 9, THEN you go back and work stitches 2-9 again, THEN finish the swatch with stitches 10 and 11. I hope that makes sense! 😋
Thank you for your help, I have been wanting to do this for a long time and now I think I might try. Just one thing though, do you always start with the contrasting colour?
You normally start by knitting two plain rows in the background color, and then start the chart with knitting the contrast color and slipping the background color 😊
Thank you Nicole and Oscar, I have had a light bulb moment and I really appreciate your help, I certainly learnt alot. Keep them coming and I will be watching.
Thanks for watching! Most often, these kinds of designs end with a few rows of the background color in garter (same way they start), so you would bind off in whatever color you finished with. Hope this helps!
I just tried one of Barbara Walkers patterns in the round. Does she have an 'In-the-Round' pattern book? It came out just OK, but a little bit tight. I figure there is a particular way to knit mosaic in-the-round.
She does not have an in the round book that I’m aware of. It should work well, you could work with either two colours of hand spun, or you could work with a plain dk/light worsted commercial yarn for one colour and a hand spun for the contrast, many of Andrea Mowry's patterns use spincycle yarns, which look quite like hand spun, so you could get a similar look with your own yarns. A 2 or 3 ply fractal spun yarn would have some lovely subtle colour changes.

Not dense at all! You’re correct - in most charts there are stitches on either side of the pattern repeat. These stitches are worked only at the beginning and end of the row. UNLESS you’re working in the round, then you omit the edge stitches altogether. Clear as mud? 😁
