As a spinner, I enjoyed the chain ply demo for knitters. Hopefully helpful hint: Twist the chain ply in the opposite direction of the existing ply to help get it closer to a proper "3-ply" and round it out.
I've watched many chain plying video done on spinning wheels, but this is the first time I have been able to follow how the chain is made. I'm sat here gleefully chain plying random balls of yarn! Thank you so much.
The difference between chain plying on a wheel and this method is that here Nicole isn't adding twist to the new 3ply yarn because it was already a plied yarn. As a spinner, I chain ply my single ply with opposite twist to how the single was spun. Knitting with Nicole's yarn will feel more like knitting with 3 separate strands together rather than one thick strand where the plies are wound around each other. Hi Nicole, I noticed that when cabling you knit the first 2 cable stitches, you knit into the back of them. Is this right please, and can you tell us (me) why you do this? Many thanks, Linda 🧶😊
Hi, Linda! Probably in my knitting back and forth, I purled some stitches with an eastern wrap instead of standard, so I had to correct the seat of the stitch by knitting into the back. Sometimes I do this unconsciously and forget to mention it in the video. If you watch either my video on combined vs continental knitting or my most recent post on how to be a "real" knitter, you'll find the whole explanation 😀

They are Signature needles. Unfortunately, they stopped producing them last year, but you might find some used somewhere. Brace yourself…they are pricey 😉💰
I’ve lately been shying away from both long-tail and Old Norwegian (my favorite) cast-ons for large numbers of stitches due to the twisting of my yarn. Thanks for suggesting the butterfly.
Wow, I so enjoyed your magical tutorial. Bit of a fairy freak myself. I would have to say that the "no cable needle" scare me 👻. I noticed that whilst you were doing the cable you knitted through the back of the loop?
Thank you! I’ll have to go look and see what I was doing there, but I suspect it was because I tinked back at some point and my stitches needed to be remounted. If you want a better understanding of that, I explain it all in my video on Combination knitting 😊
Thanks for the modified SSK. This has always bugged me, and I'm working on a sweater now where I needed this. Tried it for a few rows, and it's perfect! I'm considering ripping out my first 4-5" to start over!
Great video! Great techniques! But, was I imagining it, or when you were cabling without the needle were you knitting through the back loop in places? Just wondering...Hope you feel better soon.
Thank you! I am feeling better 😊 I don’t think I was knitting through the back loop. I may have done so here and there because I had tinked back and had the stitch on the needle in the wrong mount. Otherwise, no back loops 😊
My answer to a k2tog decrease balanced look, I do the following: K1, slip that stitch back to the left needle and pass the unknitted stitch over the knitted one. This one stitch is then slipped onto the right needle. This is easy and mirrors the ssk.
I do that to tighten up the edges a bit. This type of swatching has loose stitches at the edges and I like to keep it a bit more contained 😊 It’s not critical - just keeps the work tidier.
i was like "where is she going with this" as you pulled your strand through the slip knot and by your third triple strand i suddenly realized. my jaw was on the floor
Can you help me? My knitting sides are horrible!!! Just cannot get them to be the same. The first three stitches on one side are loose... The other side the first three stitches are tighter... I use longer needles like we do in Italy. I M trying to use the method you do but I am St the beginning of this teaming session. I ve been knitting for many years, same problem as you initially... Messy work. But I will not give up. Thanks for your help.
I use the Navajo plying for my spinning wheel yarn you only need to spin one thin ply to achieve a 8ply yarn that contains more air and there for is warmer to ware as well as having a softer feel.
the swatching trick - mind blown!! i'll be trying out the swoop and scoop for sure on my next pair of socks. it annoys me how my SSK side looks a bit sloppy compared to the k2tog side on my toe decreases.
I do that to twist the stitches at the edges. This helps keep the edges from loosening up as I handle the swatch. I only do it for this particular type of swatching. 😊
I just learned this way of swatching somewhere else too and I think it's genius! 😊 PS I have missed seeing you at Small Gods in Sidney on the second Sunday of the month.
I KNOW! Every month I think I’m going to make it and every month I have a conflict! One of these months I’ll get there again. I always think about you folks 😊
Awesome tips! I like the ssk alternative. I’ve done the chain ply to make a 3-strand yarn, but I don’t like how sometimes you can see the 3-strands of yarn in your fabric. As a spinner, what I do is overspin the entire ball of yarn Z onto a bobbin, then (putting that bobbin onto a lazy Kate), chain-ply it onto another bobbin S. I know not everyone has access to a spinning wheel (or wouldn’t consider doing this), but I find it certainly gives a better looking yarn result. Watch Oscar with that wand!!!!!
One too sure that you may even check the comments now, but thankyou first for the tutorial, it’s great. Secondly I love your featured top. Is there pattern please?

Thanks a lot ❤
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant tips. Some I used and new. Thannk
Great tips. Thankyou
You are so welcome!
I’ve lately been shying away from both long-tail and Old Norwegian (my favorite) cast-ons for large numbers of stitches due to the twisting of my yarn. Thanks for suggesting the butterfly.
You’re welcome! It really works 😁
Pretty slick! Thank you!
Great tricks. Love the pretty wand.
Thank you! Cheers!
I am knitting a sock now, I am trying that SWOOP AND SCOOP. Thank you! Rachelle in Seattle
Yay! 😀
Thanks for the modified SSK. This has always bugged me, and I'm working on a sweater now where I needed this. Tried it for a few rows, and it's perfect! I'm considering ripping out my first 4-5" to start over!
Trust me, you won’t regret re-doing it! 😊
I´m so happy I found you, it´s so much fun to watch your podcast
Yay, thank you!
My answer to a k2tog decrease balanced look, I do the following:
K1, slip that stitch back to the left needle and pass the unknitted stitch over the knitted one. This one stitch is then slipped onto the right needle.
This is easy and mirrors the ssk.
Interesting! I'll give this a try and compare it to my standard pairing techniques 😊
Why do you knit through the back for the edge stitches?
I do that to tighten up the edges a bit. This type of swatching has loose stitches at the edges and I like to keep it a bit more contained 😊 It’s not critical - just keeps the work tidier.
Hello, the last tip is great, thanks I didn't know this!
i was like "where is she going with this" as you pulled your strand through the slip knot and by your third triple strand i suddenly realized. my jaw was on the floor
I hope you were able to get it back in place! 😉😋
See my response to your comment on the Untidy Tension video ☺️ Happy knitting!
I’m a left handed knitter. Would the SSK and cable trick work the same way for me?
They should work fine. Give them a go and let me know if you run into any issues 😊
This Green Poncho suits you very well, the pattern and the colour.
Is there a diy for IT?
It's called Tyria by Amy Christoffers 😊
I use the Navajo plying for my spinning wheel yarn you only need to spin one thin ply to achieve a 8ply yarn that contains more air and there for is warmer to ware as well as having a softer feel.
Great info! Thanks so much 😁
Thank you!
You're welcome! ☺️
the swatching trick - mind blown!! i'll be trying out the swoop and scoop for sure on my next pair of socks. it annoys me how my SSK side looks a bit sloppy compared to the k2tog side on my toe decreases.
Right?? It makes me so happy to have tidy SSKs. It’s the little things sometimes 😉😋
Why is it you knit the first couple ans last couple of stitches through the back loop? I’ve never seen this before thanks
I do that to twist the stitches at the edges. This helps keep the edges from loosening up as I handle the swatch. I only do it for this particular type of swatching. 😊
Thanks, but for me, the no cable needle procedure is ok in a pinch if I forgot my cable needle but too risky to drop stitches on a regular basis.
Do what works for you - I'm not here to add stress to your knitting 😋😀
I just learned this way of swatching somewhere else too and I think it's genius! 😊
PS I have missed seeing you at Small Gods in Sidney on the second Sunday of the month.
I KNOW! Every month I think I’m going to make it and every month I have a conflict! One of these months I’ll get there again. I always think about you folks 😊
@@Knicoleknits how about tomorrow? 😊
@@cathyschuetze It’s almost 100% that I can be there tomorrow!!
Real magic going on here! :) Get well soon 💐
Thank you 😁
Excellent video, I'm definitely going to try that SSK! Good to know that Oscar is on duty, keeping things safe and informing you of anomalies! 🤣
Ha ha! He’s got that part of his job down pat 😋
Thank you! I especially like the SSK tip. :)
You’re welcome!☺️
Thanks for the spinner’s perspective. I know zip about spinning, so this info is always appreciated! 😊
One too sure that you may even check the comments now, but thankyou first for the tutorial, it’s great. Secondly I love your featured top. Is there pattern please?
@@lorrainecarlton9588 I read ALL my comments and reply to questions as quickly as soon as I’m able 😊 The pattern for the capelet I’m wearing is called Tyria by Amy Christoffers 😁
I live in Salem!! It’s a fabulous place to live for many reasons!! ❤❤❤
That’s so cool! Fascinating place, for sure 😊
@@Knicoleknitsit is absolutely beautiful except during October when it’s chaos because of all the tourists who descend on Salem for Halloween lol. 😂
Absolutely maniacal!
Ha ha! I warned you I was “off” 😂
1692. Many of them were hanged. One of those hanged was my 9th great grandmother. I know that Salem is a tourist trap these days, but it saddens me that the fate of these innocent women and all the history is lost.
The monument built into the hillside took my breath away. Their words carved into stone as impressive.
Thank you for this. You have my profoundest apologies for coming across as flippant and uncaring about what happened to your great grandmother and the others falsely accused. It is never my intention to make light of harm done. I was in a rush, not feeling myself, and was careless, but those are no excuse for being unthoughtful. I am truly sorry and will do better in the future.
@@Knicoleknits Thanks for your response. Apology accepted. Happy knitting! 🧶
My 10th great grandmother was Anne Hutchinson, who was tried as a witch and exonerated and was later killed by Indians.
@@joycelytton7789 Wow! That’s incredible family history. What an unimaginable ordeal for her 😢
To drop any stitches I always ONLY do them on the purl side. I always have a neat and tidy line
So helpful.
Loving your channel, I am learning so much even though I have been knitting for years - thank you so much. x
Yay! It’s so great to have you here 🥰
"The badliest" I love it 🤣💖
