I notice your swatches are beautifully knit, so even and uniform just like my wife knit before she passed. Took me another 30 years to reach the same level of uniformity WITHOUT having to consciously pay attention to every row. So I applaud all you knitters who hand-knit like a machine! Brava!
Enjoy the rhythm of your crocheting 😊 I think price at times doesn’t matter it’s how it feels in your hands, colours you’ve delighted in and choosing worthy person to have finished item 😊 Enjoy
Vivian, Victoria, Viola, Virginia, Violet..... any could be your new pet! Thank you for a fun episode... i knew they were all expensive, but it was good to learn about their properties.
I had vicuña yarn and yak silk blend yarn gifted by my husband a decade ago . Sweater quantity too ! I never wanted to knit with it until I become more experienced knitter ( I started knitting in 1989) one day my husband passed away, a few months later as I was cleaning house and stored my studio and stash one box was not properly closed and yes all my luxury yarns were in that bin …😢 moths got to most of it . Lesson to learn . Life is now . Love now knit now with your favourite yarn . ( I was able to save some by dying the yarn which killed all the potential moth eggs ) I used the bits chewed into weaving a shawl and the intact balls are now atm used I to knitting the châle saison by laine poudrée on Ravelry .

Great episode!!! What fun to have an emotional support nugget of yarn to carry in your purse! 😂 The name could be Victoria! After all she was a Queen and the vicuna is a very royal yarn. It uses a lot of the same letters, too.
You could call your vicuña "Cariño". It means sweetie in Spanish. It is incredibly soft as is the Qiviut. I once bought a small skein of merino/qiviut blend. I made a beanie but sadly never wore it. I could barely feel it on my head but it was so lovely to knit with. Thanks for a lovely episode!
I live in Australia and I bought a skein of Qiviuk in a gift shop when visiting Canada 15 years ago. I knitted a small scarf while travelling and have never worn it as it was so tiny. Just a few weeks ago I frogged it and plan to perhaps knit a lacy cowl. I still had the ball band and the price was CAD 57.00. I always knew it was a special yarn but I didn’t know how special until I just watched your video. I have recently discovered your channel and enjoy your content and presentation style. Thank you Nicole.
I know exactly what I'd do with something as expensive as one of these yarns. I'm going to make a yarmulke for my grandson's Bar Mitzvah. That's the perfect amount of yarn, and if there's any leftover I can make a matching one for his Dad, my son. One question: how is the elasticity?
Always wondered about vicunia yarn and now I know. I've not tried anything more fancy than silk, baby camel, yak, alpaca and kidsilk. But there is plenty of time!
I own one skein of possum, merino, and silk and it only cost $26 back in 2017. I can’t bring myself to knit with it because it is soooo soft. I’m pretty sure it will also be a scarf so my neck receives some joy.
I have knit with both Musk Ox and Qiviut, they are both fantastic to knit with and very, very soft. They are also very, very warm. Only problem is that being a woman of ''certain'' 😉😉age, I can't wear either scarf, they are just much too warm.
well at least now every time i add a skein of yarn to my stash i will think, i shouldn't be spending so much money on yarn, but it could be a lot worse.
You could knit an Emotional Support Chicken out of the Vicuna! In regard to luxury yarns, there is one that I adore (it isn't hugely expensive, but not that easy to get), and that's the possum-wool blend you can only get from New Zealand. It's a blend of merino wool and possum fur, and it is so warm and light, it is gorgeous. Possums (note, NOT Opossums) are native to Australia, and protected in Australia, but in New Zealand they are an introduced pest. So it's nice to know that something so lovely is being made out of a pest.
I made some fingerless gloves Pattern "Lace weight Mitt" I added length to it for a longer glove Used a 1.5 needle to get the right gauge. I used 100% qiviut by Artic Qiviut color 4008. Wish I could post the picture of them. I had the yarn for years and then watched this video and started knitting that day. I love them they are so soft but more than that they are light as a feather. Thank you for the inspiration. I have another skein and quite a bit left from the first skein so thinking about some ear warmers.
While traveling in Alaska I splurged and treated myself to a hat kit of Qiviut and Arctic Fox. I have yet to knit it in fear I would mess it up. Like you I do pull it out and pet it on occasion, but after watching your video I might get brave and start knitting it. Wish me luck🤞
I saw those pretty Vicuña while vacationing in Peru , didn't know it was the most expensive yarn on those cute little 4 legs. 😱😅 Love your podcasts and always learn great tips ….as in don’t ever buy Vicuña! 😅
Hi Nicole, I was on a Facebook Knitting group page and someone was asking about Quivet yarn. One of the responders suggested a UA-cam video that an engineer made in which he was comparing yarn warmth. He got some surprising results. His podcast is called Dreaming Robots and the name of this particular video is: SPIN #94 - Testing to Find the Warmest Type of Yarn - Shocking Results. I thought you might be interested in the video and the comments about his results.
Hoo boy...just read his post about his testing. It was interesting to see his results, but his testing process really had nothing to do with how humans would experience the warmth of various fibres. It does raise an interesting question about how perceived warmth is measured though. Great exercise in critical thinking! 😀
what a fun post. My husband has told me I can get a ball of vicuna and at some point I will. The name that came to mind while I was watching was Vincent :)
I think you should knit a minature Oscar with the vicuna, a small pocket sized stuffie that you can take with you rather than just a pet ball. Especially as the yarn is already the perfect Oscar colour!!
@@Knicoleknits For that extra special cheifs kiss peverse warped humor that I think you and I both share, knit the stuffy Oscar a chenille dog bed!!!! 🤣
I have a cozy ( polyester) hoodie I bought at a Musk Ox farm I visited in Alaska. The yarn was not within my budget, but it was a lovely and interesting place
Valentina Vicuna would be a great name for your yarn pet! Actually, you got a "bargain" on the Vicuna. They sell it for $300 USD, so the exchange rate it in your favor this time! Same with Qiviut, its $150 USD But Windy Valley is great, they have wonderful customer service! I made their Monique Beret with their Qiviut/silk blend and it is glorious.
💕😀xx thanks SO much Nicole for such an interesting podcast. Funny and informative. I’ve been having a very hard time recently with my husbands cancer diagnosis. Quite cheered me up. 🥰
🤩🤩 You could charge everyone you allow to touch you purse Vicuña, Goldie. Then you could spend that money on another one and have enough to knit a small emotional support chicken out of both of them. THEN, charge people to pet your emotional support chicken to recoup the cost of both……🤷🏼♀️
I would just like to warn your viewers, check the qiviut sourcing. There is a mill in Canada, that while Inuit owned, sources only by skins of dead animals. If sourcing is from Alaska, it is all either gathered or combed and no animal was harmed in the process.
I have a 1oz ball of qiviut and I am terrified of it. It is beautiful and soft and spectacular and the nicest yarn I have ever touched in my life and oh god I can’t knit it, I’ll ruin it. It is also my pet yarn ball. The cats are a little jealous.
There are some lovely boutique yarns out there. Also boutique dyers. And boutique suppliers. If I didn't desire a roof over my head, I might be tempted. It's probably cheaper than the next vet bill though, hmm.
OMGOODNESS, I can only afford the Bison/Silk but I have to have it! I am looking at the Anica Shawl pattern on Ravelry which I knit once, it turned out lovely! Nicole, any thoughts on what yarn I should pair it with to bring it up to finger g weight? I cannot tolerate wool either.
Your best option would be to double the Bison/silk to use as a fingering, but if you're trying to keep the cost reasonable, then a lace weight modal or viscose yarn should give you the gauge you need 😊
In all fairness to your great grandmother, the value isn’t in some rock that’s able to be made perfectly in labs, it’s in being in great condition across generations and being lovingly passed along. That’s one of the greatest luxuries imo
I would love your advice on the most affordable luxurious yarn which is non shrinking non feltable i use alpaca silk but frightened to wash them so suggestions, please
"Luxury" yarn and washability don't really go hand in hand, but don't be afraid to wash your alpaca silk! All you need to do is give the project a good soak in a wool wash, gently squeeze out most of the water, then roll in a towel to get the excess. Finally, lay it out to dry flat. The beauty of animal fibres is that they really don't need to be washed that often. I do my wool sweaters about once a season. Good luck!
I notice your swatches are beautifully knit, so even and uniform just like my wife knit before she passed. Took me another 30 years to reach the same level of uniformity WITHOUT having to consciously pay attention to every row. So I applaud all you knitters who hand-knit like a machine! Brava!
