What your English accent says about you
People say that they sometimes think I'm from England, because of my British accent. But I've actually come a long way in my English learning, from my native Cantonese accent, pivoting into something more American, to finally integrating into Britain as an immigrant and slowly picking up linguistic sounds that I like. What sort of technical processes did that involve? I'll explain everything.

Nah he's speaking like this only for this short, he's normally got some form of English accent
🥳 wow! Israel, love your video! Very informative and interesting! Haha, basically narrating how my English changed 😂 but I won’t be able to explain why and how in that detail 👍🏻
the Steven He vibes lmao ♥
He *is* technically from a Cantonese area originally, after all
@@RhapsodyinLingo I always wondered but could never find out.
he was born in Shenzhen (which, granted, is the most Mandarinised part of Guangdong) and moved to Ireland
German accent is probably my fav 😂😅 Eastern European is probably my least favourite and I’m Lithuanian so I can say that. I just get so frustrated by Lithuanians speaking English sometimes 😂😅
Bangkok has a government name?
Posh Northern solidarity ✊🏻 You need to start saying "reyt" though. I'll infiltrate your speech with some Sheffieldisms too, don't you worry. On the accent and belonging point, you're bang on, Manchester has people from all over the country and beyond such that labels like proper Manc feel meaningless. I would say as a native Brit though, I still have to perform different accents in different places (convergence, divergence). Class and accent in the UK are really drilled into you from birth and are a necessary tightrope to walk, especially if you have a non-RP/non-"southern" accent. I always feel like I have to be a chameleon to make interactions go well. (To answer your question, I love Singlish and HK accent! I typed the word accent so many times, it doesn't look real anymore.)
the moment I start thinking about / having to think about all these subtle cultural tensions is the point I'm in too deep in a foreign language 🥲 bring on the sheff 🔥 idk how to say reyt tho, it just sounds welsh to me
i've chosen the british accent, but i have to admit that some of my vowels are fked up by the large proportion of american content i might be exposed to, so my most natural accent would not be 100% british, but kinda like somewhere between (altho tilting towards british), with occasionally some american words used without me noticing, and with cantonese intonation to some extent ofc. and my frds hv always been telling me that i sound weirdly posh when i intentionally do a more british accent, which i would do if i am reading an article pre-written instead of speaking without a script.
i hv always been trying to speak any kinds of languages in the way they are spoken in the country/region they originated from or the more posh one, in another sense, whether or not they are older in history or not. for mandarin i chose the northern accent, instead of a southern accent like taiwanese ppl would speak. for spanish, i pick spanish from spain, despite duolingo uses latam spanish (i've learnt spanish before i used duolingo). but for portuguese it's a difficult one, my heart tells me to choose european portuguese, but there are not much free resources for it. a website that i found teaching european portuguese has to be paid. so i'd say now i'm temporarily coping with the brazilian accent and will most likely try to change it one day 😂 (sorry brazilians watching this comment)
the americanisms creeping in is probably a global phenomenon (problem? lmao) at this point
Cantonese accent❤❤❤
sorry it's slipped away from me 😭 native accent attrition
My accent was Canadian but then it got hyperforeignized (my ɐw > aw) because I didn't want to sound too much like a Hongkonger, and then drifted into a more General American accent ([ɔ] > [ɑ]). Currently trying to regain the Canadianness, but I'm not trying too hard.
I wonder if anyone has ever mistaken you as somebody who grew up in the UK, or more specifically in the north, as your northern RP sounds very authentic. Also do you self-correct in natural speech when you notice your pronunciation is off?
yes and no respectively - more precisely, I've never met someone who was surprised I'm not from the UK, but people have said they wouldn't be surprised if I was from the UK. Sometimes I do a lil guessing game with people I meet (well it's getting old now tbh) and the closest answer they've ever got to the North was the South. and for the second question, never when I'm having a natural conversation, unless it's a big slip, as in something that affects comprehension! but when I'm filming myself, I do. But ironically, as I mention, the more I try to enunciate, the more the HK accent comes out.
great video! i'm a hongkonger too and i can relate to the struggle in deciding on an accent. was born and raised here and studied at a local school. i first tried to speak with an (imperfect) british accent, but i've realized how much american media i have consumed during those years and because of it i just couldn't comfortably do a british accent unless i tried really hard. now i have more or less settled on an accent mostly american, with some british influence on vowels and cantonese influence on intonation.
❤ Very best of lucks
Very impressive. And what great idea it was to have such day Very nice You did great
Nice And might venture guess - your gift for music gives you advantage in learning languages, it makes it a bit easier
Thank you for the tips! Will keep these in mind as I learn Lithuanian myself!
❤
Were y raised in HK? Ur English accent is impeccable.
There are many small but clear tells actually, but thanks! Are you from here yourself?
@@RhapsodyinLingo Yes but they are about as subtle as it gets. No I’m not from HK at all, I’m a native English speaker and speak only 2 additional languages at the moment. Working on another.
Wow!...he was so cute....what a nice eulogy.

I'm sorry to hear that he's gone.
The "Welsh" course seems to be terrible. They mix the dialects in ways that native/ fluent speakers report wouldn't be used plus the grammar is apparently rubbish; but now I'm wondering if that's the fault of the National Centre's attempt to make a centralised/ uniform standard Welsh.
How did you learn the script. I looked at the duolingo but it assumed I knew the script.

Hello! I've never seen this channel before, but you'll discover that *really* good puzzle games develop a following of people who like watching blind playthroughs, so that they can relive the experience of learning the game's systems (since they can only personally do that once). I'm commenting before watching, so I can only hope you have fun!
I can relate to that, I've watched a couple other playthroughs myself! Hope you enjoy mine!
Thank you learnt alot❤

tbh hearing "i speak 10-12 languages" makes me doubt of your understandment of speaking a language...
I'm also learning 7 new languages this year! I already speak Dutch, English, French, Swedish, Spanish, Italian and German. In 2024 I'm adding Japanese, Russian, Chinese, Norwegian, (modern) Greek, and Esperanto.
You mean playing and messing around in 13 languages? Pro tip: stick to a few so you actually get something out of it instead of being bad in many languages except your top 3 favorites.
Nice teleprompter
Wish I could afford one. All I could do was tattoo my script to my inner eyelids
Dualingo Welsh 75 units - 5 sections Approximately 10 steps a unit. Approximately 5 lessons a step. 75 × 10 = 750 750 × 5 = 3750 3750 ÷ 365= 10.27 One lesson a day will take you approximately 10 years to complete. And that's not including having to do more lessons to accumulate hearts❤. One step s day will bring you to around 2 years and you still only reach A2 level. Do one step( bubble) a day but only use Dualingo for a starter in your language learning.
This is why I (and others) also use other apps like Glossika, Memrise, SaySomething, online courses, and S4C shows, especially if you're a learner in the US like me and not around any native speakers. The Duolingo course is good for some basic grammar and especially vocabulary, but the voices are *terrible* and it's very hard to hear the more complex phonology, like ll and rh. I love Learn Welsh Podcast and Gales con Marian; the hardest issue for most 2nd language learners is *listening.*

I would also like to see Clozemaster developing better material for less popular languages, you get some weird sentences in Greek. I wonder if they hire people or work with volunteers, I'm interested in how they create their exercises. Good app overall.
