In 2021, I set a goal to deliver a talk in Polish at the Polyglot Gathering. This year, I finally did it. Yes, without reading script at all.
How did I do? Am I fluent? Do I need more speaking practice? Let's find out.
Recorded at Polyglot Gathering 2023, Teresin, Poland, on 18 June 2023.
00:00 Who am I? What am I talking about?
    06:26 The Cantonese podcast landscape
13:47 What I learnt about how we speak
25:33 What I learnt about what we speak about
40:29 Conclusion: what can you speak about in your language, and how?
    Abstract:
I've been creating and hosting a language podcast for 3 years. The idea for the show came to me during a time of social and linguistic uncertainty, when we wanted to create something that would establish our native language in the scientific world.
The Cantonese language is at a strange crossroads. Even though it is one of the biggest languages in the world, having more native speakers than French and Turkish, it is considered a minority language. Even though people study and learn, write and read in this language every day, it is considered a non-written and non-technical language.
Wanting to prove that the truth is otherwise, we started talking about linguistics in Cantonese. Not only verbally, but also in the form of transcripts. None of us is an academic linguist, but we have a great passion for languages, which we want to share with our listeners.
