Yes but unreliably. It'll switch to Chinese constantly
@@RhapsodyinLingo yes I tried it... it is hard for a language model to learn a spoken language... we still struggle to make it possible 🤣
Well yes, but not because of anything inherent to the language itself, but rather the data available
Most written Cantonese data is polluted with standard Chinese (either code-mixing or completely in Chinese)
The language model itself can learn anything...in fact, openAI's whisper is capable of *very* accurately transcribing Cantonese.....into written Chinese, which sounded WILD to me, because to a human, it's an extra step. But to a model it's just data
@@RhapsodyinLingo when you say "transcribe canto to written chinese" you means to "spoken form written", or "written/vernacular form" ? Also how do you think we need to change/do in order to have a language model able to speak spoken/colloquial cantonese ? I would kill for that 😆.
Written Chinese refers to the one based on Mandarin :) as opposed to written Cantonese. I don't label them as spoken or vernacular, as they are simply two languages that are written in their own ways.
With language models, it's all about a large amount of data. Good data. So we would need to have a lot of text written in Cantonese, in a way that you would like the model to learn. So in short, everyone just needs to start writing as much as they can in Cantonese, as good as they can (ahem ua-cam.com/video/9w3BsdCHg8U/v-deo.html). Admittedly it's really hard to change the culture. We're doing our part by transcribing our podcast.
