Hey there! I saw a comment of yours saying you were to start learning Turkish and watched a few videos of yours, I have to admit I am impressed. (and a bit jealous) Let me know how to contact you if you'd like someone to help you add Turkish to your victory list as well. MfG.

When I was very little I couldn't do the trill. Doctors cut the skin under my tongue before I learned to make the rolling R sound

@@EeeEee-bm5gx could be, it was a long time ago. Could be a procedure called "Lingual Frenectomy" .

This video was really interesting to me because I always ALWAYS refused to take people online saying they can't roll their Rs seriously. But knowing your language history - I can't NOT take you seriously. I guess this is really a thing! As a native Midwest speaker of American, we of course don't have those but I was rolling rs for fun since childhood. A few Venezuelans called my Spanish rs beautiful while tutoring me, so I think I'm nailing both types just fine. The fact that overdoing the tap leads to the roll means you MUST think of the tap as the starting position, you won't be able to launch the rolling r any other way than to start from there. Dunno what else to say. I often have too much fun and overdo it when not paying attention, leading to ... my peros accidentally becoming perro

Haha it really is my achilles' heel! Most people just say try harder or practise more but the time I've spent on this shows that there really is a trick you need to figure out. (If you knew me in person you'd find me trying all the time lol.) Otherwise I might just have an inborn defect, which is fine - I once had an English student who couldn't do any R but the French one. But it's interesting that many people with trill-less native languages (including mine) who can do it often tell me they imitated it for fun as a child, which is obviously the best time to learn new sounds. But in the comments to this video, I find more people than I expected who struggle with the same thing, all with Cantonese as their native tongue. I suspect that this sound is a relatively less popular thing for kids in our culture to do (with exceptions of course).

Oh and I did come to the conclusion to use the tap position as a starting point - but somehow I can't get it to roll there!
