Planting Grass Plugs with an auger | Rio Bermuda from NCgrassplugs.com
Certified Rio Bermuda grass plugs planted using the drill auger was so easy. We mixed up a small batch of Soil Moist as a root dip and off camera we added some granular fertilizer and RGS (root growth stimulant).
How to plant plugs:
1. Either, remove grass to bare dirt or mow existing grass down as low as possible.
2. Using the drill auger or appropriate planting tool, make the holes needed for the plugs. We typically recommend planting in an offset grid at 12” spacing.
3. Plant the plugs. Soil Moist root dip is optional. Step on each one after planting. Fertilize and water deeply.
4. Mow often and keep plugs moist.
These will spread rapidly to create the lawn that you’ve been wanting.

Could you set plugs in an existing lawn and will they propagate and spread over the old grass? I believe it will as there is a patch of Zoysia between the curb and the sidewalk and it appears to grow bigger every year, would love to have that as the full lawn. It grows well in the Northeast.

If you are skeptical about mixing chemicals try Ornamec 170 which has some of the same ingredients as Fulisade. Mixing it is simple and it works on my zoysia lawn in NW Fla to eliminate Bermuda grass. Just remember to use a surfactant so it clings to the unwanted grass and not run off into the soil. Probably takes a few growing seasons to totally eliminate Bermuda grass. I used zoysia plugs to fill in bare areas as well. If you scarify the area between your plugs they will grow faster too. Most ppl have Bermuda invading their yard but just don't know it. Good luck

How would the Rio compete with common Bermuda? If you planted these randomly in a common lawn, which would dominate? I would assume they would probably just dwell together. What are your thoughts? I would love to convert over to this. But having 30,000 ft. would be a costly renovation to go in and glyphosate all the common, and plug entire area with Rio.

I realize this video is 3 years old, but I just discovered it. I have a question in reference to the rate of the Abamectin. I know you said 1.5 oz per 1000. In another article from the university of Florida, it recommends the same product to be applied at .28 oz per 1000. I am treating 30,000 ft. of common Bermuda. Their rate varies greatly with what you applied. Just trying to figure out what would be better. At your rate, I would use 45 oz for my square footage, and their rate I would only apply 8.4 oz. I don’t remember the total but it was on the high side. This is ok to do only in the grow in phase but never after that. Sod farms run a pound of N and. Pound of K every two weeks after they harvest.

Thanks for posting this video! What do you believe the impact of only using Fusilade or Recognition by themselves would be? (Instead of together) And would Fusilade by itself do well with removing Bermuda from Zoysia lawn?

My advice is to follow the directions on the label, but if not stated, wait until May or June to apply in FL. My test plots included Zeon, Compadre and Zenith as well as my side yard that has Meyer zoysia and the front yard of El Toro. All of these showed no sign of damage whatsoever and I applied 2x rate on the test plots. I may repeat that rate again this summer to verify these results as the Zeon has historically been plagued with Common Bermuda popping up. I do not see any in it right now. It may be worthy to note that I use a biostimulant on a regular basis, either CytoGro or RGS depending on what I have in the garage. Looking at this front lawn in the video, I am amazed at how much it has filled in. I think we are over 95% filled in.

Just ran across this, great info. Thank you. I have planted zoysia here in FL. Had St. Aug but I killed it trying to spray then my wife wouldn’t let me do it again. Now I have my established zoysia, but st aug from neighbor and Bermuda in spots throughout. Above says to spray in June, so it’s too early now? Wasn’t sure being this far south if we should get an earlier jump? Also I heard mention in your test plot of several types, but u sure what was put down at this point. Had to resod 2yr ago another patch, so I could even have 2types. Will that matter or do I need to make sure which type first? That’s how I lost my first lawn, didn’t realize I had Flora-tam and the chemical was unsafe for that particular. Trying to gain control back and not many down here seem to be able to help.
