hello Michael ! I would like to install a top load bridge on a mexican Fender telecaster player. SO if I undertand tour video It is not possible? Thanks and hi from France!
Well when it’s a toploaded tele bridge the string through holes are out of the equation. So you just have to check the scale length.. Misha from the nut until the 12th Fret. The same distance should be from the 12th to the saddle of the bridge . I hope that helps.
@@MichaelLagerstedt ok thanks ! :)
If you want a specific colour that you can't find or want certain features that don't come stock on a store bought guitar. Yes, make your own. But, you will never be able to sell it for the amount you put into it. Think of a Partscaster as your "Forever Guitar". I have 4 Partscasters and they are all good.
Great input 👍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Thanks so much for watching and taking time to comment 🙏🏻😃
Thanks for sharing, looks awesome. I really like your idea of creating a joint prior to glueing the blanks, neat addition. Just out of interest, when applying the finish are you still sanding between coats?
Not between every coat but you can check out the process in this video: ua-cam.com/video/R6RtUX6txj0/v-deo.htmlsi=UD2LjeK1cj3gihn1 Thanks for watching 🙏🏻😃
Let’s not forget, Leo designed the tel and the Strat to be parts guitars. With his thinking that when necks and bodies were worn and tatty you replaced them. Also 4 of the most famous Strats in history were partscaster’s SRV’ number one, Claptons Blackie, Gilmore’s The Black Strat and EVH Franken Strat
Exactly… 👍 Well said 😃🙏🏻

@MichaelLagerstedt thankyou very much Sir....🙏😍
Thankyou very much Sir🙏😍
5:20 I couldn't tell!! All 3 sounded nearly identical. I have a nice partscaster I made, it plays really well!
Good to hear… I think that your own perception of the instrument makes it sound good. If you love it you play better 😉👍
you can get the "modern" style bridge , in a vintage style mounting holes(mounting and string through holes in the right spot)
Really good to know… I haven’t seen that… Thanks for sharing that 🙏🏻😃
Thanks for share your journey. I did exactly the same mistakes like when my router bump in a lateral hole, or when I destroyed my template. Your pocket at last video was much better then mine, so sharing the mistakes help to try avoid it. Congratulations your built become a beautiful guitar.
Thanks so much for watching. Good luck with your projects 😉👍
Just an idea , anybody feel free to tell me if it’s a bad one.How about a hardwood tapered wedge, and when perfected glued to the base of the neck pocket? A bit like the Stewmac shim but far chunkier?
I don’t see why that would be a bad idea. I think a lot of decisions are about what is the easiest. Is it easier to fit a wedge perfectly in the neck pocket or to put an angle on the neck heal or neck pocket? I’m curious what others think. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching 🙏🏻😉
That sounds amazing.
Thanks 😉👍
Fantastic! I am in the same situation, and I was about to make new holes in the guitar to pass the strings, I will look for these plastic tubes to do the same thing. But I would like to know over time, will the plastic not wear out or get damaged with the tension of the strings? No problems encountered after several months?
Hi Jerome, No problems until now. But I have only changed strings ones. I had a little trouble getting one of the high strings through because it hit the underside of the brass bridge . So I took off the bridge and drilled the hole out on the back side of the baseplate. Not visible from the front side. That did the trick. Other than that I have had no problem. 😉👍 Thanks for watching 😃🙏🏻
the first color is yellow?
No, it’s from Northwestguitars and called vintage amber 👍😉
do a test piece on a spare piece of cheap wood. till its perfected.
True, also a way to do it. Great 👍😉 Thanks for watching 🙏🏻😃
Place a couple layers of masking tape around you template area where the router bit rides. This will tighten the neck pocket
That’s a great tip. I have done that before but didn’t think of it this time around. I actually think that I should have made a template specifically for this neck for it to fit better. Thanks so much for watching and taking time to comment 🙏🏻😃
Way more simple. The angle is right there on the wood. Plus, there is a margin for error with the height of the wrap around on the posts. Need to be closer? Rout a c-hair deeper. Done it. Experience.
Exactly… experience! That’s what I’m getting out of this 😅👍 Thanks for your comment 😃🙏🏻
You can use a neck shim? Is this an option?
I have done that in an earlier video but it has some drawbacks. The shim is ok if you need a slight adjustment but for a angle I am going for I didn’t think it was the best. And also I like to try things I haven’t done before 😉👍 Thanks so much for watching and for your comment 🙏🏻😃
Easier way. Cut the neck pocket level to the top of the body but 1/8th of an inch deeper. Then put the body on a flat and level table and place a 3/8ths inch shim under the body at the neck pocket. This will tilt the body slightly. Then pour a mixed epoxy glue into the pocket until it self levels and covers the whole surface. You now have a neck pocket that will tilt your neck such that you can use a 1/2 inch high bridge.
Wow.. that’s a creative solution. I haven’t seen that one tried out before. Great 👍 Thanks for watching and sharing that 🙏🏻😃
@@MichaelLagerstedt I think I invented it. I used it on a stock Tele in order to use a LP style bridge.
@@timhallas4275 I think you did too 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I just used a red cedar siding shingle!😜😜😜
I can’t quite imagine how you did that but if it works it works 😉👍 Thanks for watching Gary 🙏🏻😃
@ It was a 10 inch wide shingle 14 inches long and I put that under my template. It may have been under 2 degrees but it worked out perfectly for a Strat body I put it on with a Gibson wrap tail style bridge. Sometimes a solution presents itself while your at work!😜
@@MichaelLagerstedti replied to your post in my post!😜😜😜
@ absolutely… it’s amazing when that happens. Great idea. I want to demystify the hole process of building a guitar. Just do it and be inspired to make sound with it. Your experience fits right in to that 😉👍 I love it
@@MichaelLagerstedt Are you building with reclaimed lumber? I work in construction and when we remodel old homes I save the lumber for guitar bodies. Some of it is a least 100 yrs old! A real 2 inches by 6 inches! Houses 70 years or older have the best lumber!
On my first TOM bridge guitar build (a homemade Squier Venus/Mercury) I was too afraid to cut the neck pocket angle. So my solution was to recess the bridge into the body and it worked amazingly well.
Yes that's an option that works great as well - Thanks for sharing that ;)
Knowing the dimensions of everything, simply draw everything out, starting with a straight line representing the string and measure the resulting angle. No "contraption" necessary.
You make it sound so simple 😂… and you are probably right 😉👍 Thanks for watching 🙏🏻😃
I built a warmoth guitar with all warmoth parts...I thought I would put it together and rock...boy was I wrong...the strings were laying on the frets with the hardtail all the way up...I had to shim the bridge about 4/64ths...nothing is ever easy😫
True… curve balls all the time… you have to learn to like that if you don’t want to go crazy. Thanks for watching and for taking time to comment 😃🙏🏻
To get past the fear of doing it wrong I say to myself "if I mess up I'll learn two things instead of one".
I love it🥳 - messing up is part of learning, definitely 👍 Thanks for your great comment 🙏🏻😃
Easier way is using Autodesk Fusion. You only need a computer and basic CAD skills, no grinding no MDF. Det här var själva fan säger jag ...
I actually downloaded a few CAD apps but decided I didn’t want to spend my sparse guitar building time on learning new software… but I ended up working a little in Inkscape for my body/cavity,pickguard design. Not really a CAD app but it has some measuring functions. 😉👍
Where are you stationed
I’m living in Copenhagen Denmark 👍😉
Good work, I like the jig contraption! 👍 I did similar, because I wanted to have the end of the fretboard sit flush on the body a d the pickups more elegant sticking out less above. So I needed to get the neck sit deeper by 3mm, but also at an angle. Did it with a sharp pocket knife and a tiny sanding block. But I cheated, and grinded a slight angle on the neck heel too. 😅 But I see some problems you might run into. First, there is a gap in the depth of the pocket to the upper end of the neck heel. IMO it's better if the whole end of the neck heel has contact with the back of the rout. I would consider routing the pocket longer (and also correct the angle steeper, so the test wire touches the last fret) till the neck sits flush on the end. If you let it like this (beside loosing sustain and running out of lowering height adjustment room for the bridge), you maybe get the next issue: Scale length is changed. Length is changed due the angle, it's longer now (the bridge needs to sit further towards the neck). Because you created a triangle, and the hypotenuse is always longer than the opposite leg. Hypotenuse is the scale length, the opposite is the plane of the body, and third leg is the bridge. On wrap around bridges you only can prolong the scale length... It might help a little that there is to add 1,2-1,5 mm to the exact scale length for compensation of string stiffness, but often it's not enough. And I never measure in cm/mm the scale length, or calculate, because errors can happen. I rather take the exact distance from edge of the nut to the 60-40% middle of 12-th fret and duplicate this from the point on the 12-th (adding 1,2mm) to the contact point of the string on the high e saddle. Sorry for the long comment. 😅 Keep doing awesome stuff, I like all your previous work! 👌
Thanks for your awesome input. Some things to think about 👍😉 I didn’t imagine that a wraparound bridge would be so challenging but on the other hand I like to do something I haven’t done before. Always learning. Thanks 😃🙏🏻
@@MichaelLagerstedt Oh, I just noticed that your bridge is fully adjustable. You'll have enough room both ways for adjustments.😊
@@lone-wolf-1 Yes fortunately it is… 😅 Thanks 🙏🏻 again
After watching Ben from crimson guitars video on neck break angles I would draw the side view of the guitar full size (Ben explains it much better 😁)
Yes I have seen that several times as well. Great video. I had to find my own approach though 😜 Thanks so much for watching and for taking time to comment 😃🙏🏻
Keep it up Michael! :)
🙏🏻😃… thanks Marcus 😉👍
Good to see you back, what a scientist!!! More patience than me, you’d have thought there’d have been a jig already designed as it’s a popular thing
Good to be back… 😉 Thanks for watching David 🙏🏻😃. Yes you are right, but I couldn’t find any jig for that.
2 degrees should be enough... I did it the other way and put the angle on/in the neck heel...
I think that is probably the better option 😅 Thanks for watching 👍😉
If you wanna put an angle in the neck pocket you can also use angled neck shims...
@@Nellilyep … you are right I actually made a video about that for my first guitar build . 👍😉
Hey man..👍 good to see you again....I have a bad habit of eyeballing the angle and it's worked so far but it's only a matter of time...🎸
If it works don’t fix it 😉👍 Thanks for watching 😃🙏🏻
Still an excellent job Michael! I was thinking about your videos yesterday, and this one popped up today. Glad to see it!
Yes it has been awhile… when your daughter gets married guitar building and UA-cam videos takes the backseat 😉👍 Thanks for watching and for your comment 😉🙏🏻
Awesome build ! You are not only a Luthier you play very well also. Beautifully done - You have inspired me to one day build my own ax.
I love it👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍😉 Thanks so much for watching and taking time to write a comment William 🙏🏻😃
All you need to do is put an ashtray bridge on like the body was designed for. You can buy an ashtray bridge with no sides.
Yep , you are right, but my goal was to replicate the Andy Summer Tele so I went with all brass bridge. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻😃
Metal...right..the best because it won't change it's shape because of room temperature changes.
That’s true but I don’t know if it makes that much of a difference 🤔 Thanks for watching 🙏🏻😃
I’d be willing to bet the tone is still awesome. One thing I think we as guitar players are quick to forget is each part of the signal chain is like a filter. The earlier in the chain, the more subtle the differences become. Pickups are the very first part. Your speaker shapes the most of your tone because it’s the last piece of the chain. So I think that despite my guitar player brain telling me it’ll suck, it’s probably negligible in a mix. My only concern then is the difference in feel or the dynamics. I’m sure the noiseless construction sucks some of your dynamics but how much? Is it noticeable? Or maybe better question is it good enough? It probably is, but I’d like to hear experiences on this one.
Good points😉👍. It’s now a few years since I built this guitar and it has become my go to guitar. It’s super versatile, nice to play. The versatility makes it possible to get a tone that sits right in a mix every time I’m making tracks. The fact that it’s a hum cancelling pickup doesn’t make any difference. It’s just great. … and it’s off course just luck that the combination of parts worked out well in that project 😅👍
The trick is indeed to do it like you did and leave the guitar in the rain. Does wonders for the intonation.
🤣👍… thanks for watching 🙏🏻🤩
If you are building them to make money, you will go broke, if you have the skills and are looking to build one just like you want to play, depending on how good your skills are, how large your pocketbook is for those parts and those Expensive Tools most people forget they will need to do that work
Thanks for making a few great points 🙏🏻😉
Major7sus9 fail ;-)
😂👍
your buying at the wrong places.Partscasters are the way to go if you are a player, you dont have to settle for factory profiles a d pickups, you can do it for 2 to 500 bucks ,Build it to keep ,and play ,If you try ,you can build a better guitar .
Well said 😉👍
Did those stewmac say they were $100?! Wtf!
Help.. tone not working
Uuh… it should be pretty simple. Think of it like this : The main switch is connected as as if there were only two pick ups. The only thing is that that the one output goes to another switch. I don’t know what can be wrong if you followed the diagram 😳
sounds great, love those fuzzy duck pickups, i have a set of alnico 5 singles ready to go in a strat im building, cant wait to try them.

For anyone who doesn't know, boiled linseed oil gives your neck a great finish, but PLEASE DO SOME RESEARCH ON DISPOSING USED RAGS. Boiled linseed oil makes used rags flammable AND combustible, and are notorious for starting fires on their own.
Thank you Anton for an important point 🙏🏻
You know you can look at a saddle and tell when the intonation isn't set right. If those saddles aren't staggard then you have a problem at the nut end. no way that guitar is in intonation ... If you don't believe me, do some research ... Just look at the bridges on any other guitar and you can see at the saddle what i'm speaking of. thanks. .. wow ..you showed 3 other guitars with the saddles staggard .... that should tell you exactly what i'm speaking of..... again thanks and keep up the good work.
Thanks for the good information 👍😉 … and for taking time to comment 🙏🏻😃
