Should you AVOID Hum-Cancelling Pickups?

- Are Noiseless / Hum-canceling pickups BAD? In this video I test what my Hum-canceling P90 from Fralin can do.
The question came up in my last video where jeg played a Novo Serus J with regular P90's and compared it with my own home build Novo inspired guitar with a Hum-Canceling P90. In this video I dig deeper into Noiseless or Not - by playing the guitar.
I also introduce the Inspiration Factor Grade system - that I just invented ;)))

I’m heavily inspired by Novo guitars by Dennis Fano - and my building philosophy is - not to reinvent the wheel- but rather try to learn from the greats.
I’m a guitar building beginner and I have been following The Great Guitar Build Off competition 2020. I learned a lot from the competitors and that inspired me greatly to build a guitar myself.
I built my first guitar under lockdown last summer 2020 and guitar building kind of hooked me.

I have bought a neck from GuitarAnatomy.com and the body is built of old pine wood floor boards from a house built in 1808.
Why is that a good thing? Because old wood is cool ... and also more resonant.
The point is to learn how to build great guitars. It can't be rocket science, but it's fascinating. My plan is to learn from the best by researching materials, components, and methods.

I like the inspiration factor! :) Looking forward to the new build!
Thanks Marcus - appreciate it 😃🙏👍🏼
Yes I like inspiration factor as well!:) Can’t wait to see what you build next!
Hi Ryan
Thanks brother 😃👍🏼
Great Advice !
Thanks man, and thanks so much for watching and commenting 🙏🏻😃
I like the "inspiration factor" idea. It is something I want to factor into a series of diy pedals I want to build with minimal knobs/switche, almost on/off only.
Wow … sounds great. 😃👍
I’m just now trying to get around to doing my Inspiration factor video about Neural dsps new Mesa Boogie plugin 😅
Middle pickups are where it is at! Check out my Matador model!
Nice guitar - and yes I'm also very happy with the TV Jones Supertron in the middle position. Thanks for watching ;)
Perhaps there is a Gestalt theory phenomenon occurring where our brain wants to interpret separate things (the signal and the inseparable noise) as whole.
In other words the “more alive” sound comes from our brain compounding the high end hiss & buzz with the actual tone being produced by the pickup and makes it think they are part and parcel the same thing.
I notice things sometimes sound more alive in my DAW when I add noise to a signal with an analog modeled plug-in that can add analog-loke noise to a signal (like the SoundToys Radiator plugin). That extra noise can add up pretty quickly
A signal chain with 1-3 pedals on will most likely reintroduce their own noise back to the signal, but without having to compromise how hot the incoming signal is. If this is the case you would have the ability to drive gain pedals harder.
Maybe???
Not a bad observation Geoffrey. Noise is definitely part of what makes some guitar tones appealing.
Thanks so much for a great comment and thanks for watching 😃🙏🏻
I honestly don't think someone listening to a full mix will be complaining that the guitarist is using him cancelling pickups. You can definitely tell when playing it, and that's probably the best reason to choose and change pickups; but there's no need to change pickups for the sake of your audience.
I wonder if the humbucking P90 could be EQd to get closer to the regular P90?
Hi Mikey, Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment.😃🙏🏻 You are probably right and about eq’ing - you can get close but not get it spot on.
😉👍
Nerver mind the guitar stuff, when is your album coming? About the tone difference, Paul Davids recently released a guitar string shootout. To my ears, and through phone speakers, the difference between different strings was way larger than between regular and hum cancelling.
Hi, thanks so much for watching. 🙏🏻😃I’m glad you enjoyed the music.Very interesting with the strings - I have to check out that episode of PD 👍😉
Hey Mike! Great tones and playing!
Curious…is the gold foils guitar collecting dust or do you alternate between the two?
Would love to see more tones out of that one too
Keep up the videos, we’re watching them!
Hi Krzysztof - well I must admit that it has been collecting some dust 😅 - but the sunburst is coming up soon because I just received a neck that I’m going to put on it.
😎👍🏼
@@MichaelLagerstedt check out freestoneguitars on eBay, great quality necks for great prices, I have a few…they use uncommon mixes of wood that look great paired up together and they put up a batch on eBay every Thursday and sell out all the time
Thaks for the tip 😃👍🏼
Looks, feel, tone. If you love how it looks, you’ll pick it up. If you love how it feels, you’ll want to play it. If you love how it sounds, you’ll want to keep playing it. Oddly enough, the sound is more modifiable than the looks or feel in this age of profilers and modelers. So for me it’s neck, weight, and good pickups are nice to have up front.
Good point… see what you mean 🤔
Thanks for watching and for sharing this thought 😃🙏🏻👍
Do all P90s sound the same? Is there a definition out there of THE P90 sound? Can the differences maybe attributed to different guitars? Are the differences subtle enough so you can easily compensate with EQ?
I don't buy into the whole one PU sounds better than the other (provided we are talking good quality PUs) discussion, likewise the whole comparison thing of two guitars to discern the sound of different tone woods! That's bollocks too, as every piece of timber will sound slightly different, cos there are no two identical pieces of wood. So even two identical guitars will sound different.
What I'm trying to say: It doesn't matter, as long as the guitar sounds and plays fine as it is. I own a LP Junior DC with a noiseless Mojotone P90. I don't know if the PU sounds like a REAL P90, all I can say is: It sounds killer! So there you go.
Well, you are right - as long as it sounds killer it’s all good 🤩👍
But there’s definitely a difference between different kinds of PU constructions - single coil/humbucker/P90/Gold Foil ect.
If you find the one that makes you play you are all set 👍😃
Hey thanks so much for watching 🙏🏻
@@MichaelLagerstedt Not saying there isn't, same with different guitars: They CAN't sound the same. But why do we concentrate so much on THE sound, and how close any given piece of gear is to THE sound, while THE sound is by no means defined nor necessarily better?
Seems like we're living in times of too much choice :)
Do you remember the times when we had "a" guitar and "an" amp, and that was it? Fun times, right? We were young and had a guitar and were creative. And it didn't even occur to us, that we might want to have a second, third and forth guitar and a whole arsenal of amps.
Now we all own a whole wall full of guitars and 20 amps stacked on top of each other, even the youngsters now have and arsenal. But has the music gotten better?
I'm guilty of that too BTW :)
And I too change pickups sometimes, but not in pursuit of THE sound, but because some PUs just seem to hold back the sound and thus make the playing experience less pleasurable. That's why I don't like PUs with ceramic magnets. Whenever I play them, they feel plasticky to me. But it's never that they don't sound close enough to the sounds from the past.
Well, I suppose we all have our own philosophy when it comes to guitar gear and sound :)
@@Patbwoy You are right - it’s pretty overkill with the choices. Gear can inspire but too much gear can just as easy drain and distract you from creating 😃👍
@@MichaelLagerstedt Indeed :) But hey, it's a market! Why would they let us believe one guitar and one amp is enough ;) This whole "chasing the perfect tone" thing is a big marketing ploy IMHO :)
Yes
😂
tak!
Selv tak 😉👍
I don't like hum , so hum-canceling pickups for me... 😎
I hear you Nellil 😉👍🏼
Great playing! Off topic, but that's an interesting accent, may I ask what it is?
Thanks man, I’m from Denmark and I’m trying not to sound too danish.
Thanks so much for watching 😃🙏🏻
