    Thanks for this interesting review. I own what I believe to be the predecessor of this tent: the Abisko Lightweight (2p version tent). Seeing as they don't offer any information on their site anymore and even deleted their old video's about care for this tent from their official UA-cam Page, I hope maybe you can answer a question I've been having. I've owned the tent for around 9 years, but due to circumstances only used it 6 times in those 9 years. (Boy Scouts, always on a protected campsite and not really used in foul weather or crazy storms). But I had the tent poles break on me 2 times. Even though the second time, the pole came from a whole new set I ordered, and was not a repaired one. Do you have any experience on the DAC featherlite NSL poles being so easy to break? Last time they broke, it was while testing the tent during a rainy but almost windstill night to see if it was still waterproof after 2 years of being stored away. My wife is calling me crazy I payed 800 euro's for a tent (+ 200 euros for a replacement pole set) claiming that with the light camping we do, we'd better be off buying a whole new decathlon tent every year and coming out still cheaper. And I'm starting to believe her and lose faith in the Fjällräven brand...

    • @hanskirk-hiking9697
      @hanskirk-hiking9697 18 днів тому

      Hi no I have never heard about DAC poles breaking in these circumstances. I use DAC poles in many of my tents and once I broke one but that was in stormy conditions. Could the reason be that the elastic line holding the poles, becoming slaggy and not holding the poles properly together when raising the tent?

    • @MagisterGentis
      @MagisterGentis 12 днів тому

      @@hanskirk-hiking9697 Thank you for your insight. The second broken pole came from a new set. So I would hope the tension cord inside the pole was in mint condition. I however will keep checked that all segments are tightly together. I don't think they offer official replacement poles for my tent anymore. Do you think I could replace the segment with a standard DAC segment? Otherwise I'm really stuck with an expensive but useless tent due to a pole breaking. Even though the tent fabric is literally still in perfect condition and waterproof...

  • @elprl
    @elprl 27 днів тому

    Thanks Hans for sharing this video. I had the same issue when a peg came loose and the tent collapsed and broke a pole. Entirely my fault - I'm still happy with my tent and got a replacement pole. I asked Big Agnes directly on tent direction and they said this: "If you are in a windy area, do your best to orient your tent so that the foot (shorter side) faces into the prevailing wind. This will put your tent in the best position to resist even strong winds and reduce flapping noises during the night." -customer service. Have you tried putting the treking poles on the inside to brace the pole, it doesn't need to be that high? I use the treking pole strap to tie around the tent pole, then dig the spike into the ground. I'm always afraid of someone stealing the treking poles when on the outside.

    I understand you switched to the X-Mid from the Copper Spur to get better wind resistance, but I'm wondering why you didn't try a lightweight tunnel tent like the Nordisk Telemark? All three seem to weigh around 1 kg and, and just from reading it specs, it sounds the Telemark would offer better wind and water resistance, while being designed for the Scandinavian wet and windy conditions (such a being able to set up the tent without the inner getting wet) compared to the American style X-Mid and Copper Spur. I'm just curious about your thoughts because most ultralight gear talk is centered around people hiking in much milder conditions than you are.

      Hi yes that’s a good question In nice weather the Copper Spur tents are my preferred tent because lots of interior space… I also use a Fjellraven Abisko tent in the winter time but it’s very heavy and prone to lots of condensation. I have for a long time been looking for a lightweight winter tent… in my opinion Nordisk Telemark will have issues with condensation, but maybe i am wrong

    Hey Hans :) Which freestanding tent would you recommend if i am searching an ultralightweight freestanding alternative to the xmid?

    What do you think about the solid versus the non-solid version? (1P) Does the non-solid only fit warmer weather?

      Hi Dor The non-solid version is much lighter and more expensive. I am sure you could make it work in colder climates but there will be a issue with condensation

    Hi Hans great video would you mind me asking what millimetre the elastic cord is and where to get it from going to take you up on the sea to summit guylines also I bought extra msr ones for my msr hubba hubba nx2 but I like the look of them more from Lancashire UK 😀👍

      Hi Jonny thank you for your nice comment 😉 I have bought my elastic cord in a hoppy store, first I thought that it needed to be some special cord. I just went for the thinnest, knowing that it wouldn’t last forever, but easily replaced when it loses its elasticity over time.

      @@hanskirk-hiking9697 okay hans will look into thanks for your swift reply and a quick tip from me get the MSR tent peg hammer might seem a little extreme but they're light as hell and sturdy buggers the swing weight ratio is amazing and it's help me out in downpours where you just want to get on with pitching I can't recommend it highly enough plus it's got a beer bottle cap opener integrated into it result atb and happy camping buddy 😀👍❤
