  • It is possible to have warm boots in the winter time, and still be ultralight. I'm reviewing the Altra Lone Peak 4 MID RSM boots in the field.
I try them along with some gaiters and micro-spikes.
I am in the transition from heavy weight backpacking/hiking to ultralight backpacking/hiking.
I hike here in Scandinavia were there is a tradition to use very heavy gear, because of the cold and inclement weather.
I am trying to change the tradition, and still be safe and comfortable.
Here is a list of some of the gear that I use, and can recommend:

Thanks for telling me about your spikes!!! I need to get a pair for hiking in the winter, so many icy spots especially when it starts melting.

Micro-spikes can be very helpfull, and also for safety reasons - if one is not fanatical about ultralight equipment, could Kahtoola be a good brand 💁

Hi Hans thx for your thoughts on the Lone Peaks but any thoughts about the Altra M Olympus 5 Hike Mid Gtx as there’s no reviews on YT about them I was wondering are they to heavy or what. Ps I’m in Norway ❄️🏔🥶

Hi Doug - thanks very much - I don’t know about the Olympus 5
My guess is that they are not too heavy

Thank you Hans Kirk for this good video. I also like the Altra. Last summer i used the 4,5 and they are awesome. I have completely increased the 4.5, there is almost no profile on it anymore. I going to buy for this summer the 5.0, I am very curious. Also i have the 4.0 Mid, the same what you have. Unfortunately I have a small problem with these shoes. Only have these shoes for 2 months, but both have a small hole on the side. Right in the same place. Very weird. The Mid are also super shoes, they run fantastic, except for those 2 holes that give me wet feet.

Hi Raymond - nice to hear from a fan of Lone Peak - yes they are really awesome - also because of the large toe box. And thanks very much for the kind words 💁😊

@@hanskirk-hiking9697 The large toe box is fantastic. Specially for people with a wide foot, like me. ATb Raymond

Are these warm enough for sub zero conditions? I usually hike in around 0F-10F (around -15 C) conditions in winter, you think these could work?

Hi PK I have not tried it yet, but I would not be nervous to try them in really cold conditions. If you end up buying them - be sure to get them one or two sizes bigger than you usually use.
