Here is my introduction to Rance, the beloved Fantasy RPG series, that I too now love dearly.

    Does it have any connection to Fate stay night and tsukihime or would you say it is mostly separate since I do they take place in the same universe. Also would you recommend this as a good starting point for nasu verse among visual novels or would you say it is better to read fate stay night or Tsukihime first then they have gotten their remake outs in official release?

    • @NeNeiSan
      @NeNeiSan 5 днів тому

      I would say this is one of the better starting point for anyone getting into Nasu's works! This was originally going to be Nasu's first ever published novel back in the 90s--- of course revised and changed over time ---and you can tell with how it so succintly establishes the world and its major characters. Each of Nasu's works can be read standalone, and though a lot of worldbuilding ideas and even some characters are shared between these works to varying degrees, your understanding won't be majorly affected. You can really go in whatever order that interests you, but if you don't really mind and just want to see what this world has to offer this is the order of the major entries I recommend to understand as much references upon your first viewing of these entries: Witch on The Holy Night - Kara No Kyoukai: Garden of Sinners - Tsukihime - Fate/Stay Night Again they aren't majorly connected, but Nasu likes to make callbacks quite often and allows you to get a sense of progression of a few shared characters. Nothing major, but something you can appreciate on the side!

    Rance is such a weird game, as in that you have to have a certain way of viewing media. Like if you take the series to serious and strip it of all the things that builds its charming and cruel identity all youd get is some fetishistic mind numbing nukige, but if you take the time and mind to indulge yourself in a way that you know what ever is happening is happening in a way that is supposed to be just entertainment with a cast and world turned to 11 in its absurdity you get one of the most funny, charming, flat out insanely entertaining games you will ever play. playing the original 3, I think with all the flaws that come from the games being 30 by now is how rewarding it is to see not only the world developed in a literary sense but in a technical way with each game the art, software and gameplay got upgraded and it was so nice to see how it changed like seeing rance 1 compared to rance 3 is insane for a 3 year difference that art actually looked fairly pretty in my opinion and the writing got even more funny with the games getting their lenght doubled each game allowing for more time for the writer to immerse us in this batshit crazy world. while ill be one to admit that the gameplay for the games that ive played were for me the weakest points, everything more than makes up for it. I havent finished the third game as of yet as i took a break from playing due to college classes taking up more and more of my free time but once i get the time i cant wait to go back in and continue the series as it brought me some of the most entertaining stories ive read in recent times and just the massive scale of the future games get me hyped to see what else the franchise has got to offer.

      Completely agree! Everyone has their own relationship with fiction, but it's very important to be open to how thing a story tends to portray certain things. Especially with something like Rance that does take an unorthodox approach to how it handles its sensitive topics in a more brighter light than what is seen as dark and traumatizing. Rance plays on that contrast and twists it into something that fits the story it wants to tell, sometimes even making you laugh due to Rance just being himself! These games are gems that just makes you want to dive deeper into not only the world and characters, but the vibe that comes from its hilarity. I too love how the story, stakes, and characters keep on growing with every game, and am very excited to see where this goes from here! My college classes are holding me back from continuing too, but I cannot wait to start up 4!

      GI0998: Rance is born on January 5th GI1002: At the age of 4, Rance is brought to Gomorrah Town by a one-armed knight. Shortly afterwards the knight passes away, leaving Rance in the care of the village chief's household. He has no memory except for his name, but his friendly attitude and puppydog eyes make everyone fawn over him. He's accepted by the village as a result. GI1005: At the age of 7, Rance gets lost and wanders into a monster-infested forest. He returns to Gomorrah a week later, covered in blood. GI1006: Now 8 years old, Rance is a scrappy little brat... But he's strong. None of the other kids can match up to him, so he becomes the de-facto leader of the village children. GI1010: At 12, he graduates from foundational education. He's not allowed to continue on to vocational education as he's been raised as a servant in the chief's house. GI1011: At the age of 13, puberty starts setting in. He starts teasing the eldest of the village chief's two daughters. Quickly becomes a pro at flipping skirts, and before long the village views him less as that sweet little boy and more of a pervy little menace... The eldest daughter is compassionate and naïve, still thinking of Rance as just a silly little boy being a silly little boy. Rance takes advantage of this and escalates his teasing to what effectively qualifies as sexual harassment. The village chief eventually finds out about this and smacks the shit out of Rance, he no longer has any chance of getting near the elder sister. GI1012: At 14, he has his first time with the village chief's youngest daughter. Seeing her usual rigid demeanor melt like putty under him after he has his way with her, Rance's self-imposed limits break down entirely. He goes full-on playboy after having a taste of sex and goes on to seduce multiple girls in the village, one after the other. In the end he fucks eight girls including both of the village chief's daughters. Eventually his sexual escapades are made a matter of public knowledge, sending a scandal rippling through the village. He's unceremoniously kicked out of the village and tries to make it on his own. He comes across a female adventurer and immediately tries to turn on the puppydog charm, pretending to need her help to get closer to her. She sees right through what he's planning and beats him to a pulp before deciding to take him on as an apprentice adventurer in an effort to rehabilitate him. GI1013: At the age of 15, Rance becomes an adventurer and tags along with the woman who'd taken him under his wing. She's 21 years old and has lived a harsh life of survival, so she sets to work teaching him about everything he needs to know to survive on the road. She also talks to him about how he can't just go jumping on women like an animal, and teaches him how to use things like contraception. He still tried to make moves on her whenever he thought her guard was down, but her guard was always up and he never had a chance. Their relationship was more like a master and apprentice, as opposed to siblings, but she was still the closest thing to family he ever had. GI1014: 16 years old. After 2 years of adventure together, the female adventurer dies on a quest. Keith, of Keith's Guild, was a friend of hers. He takes in Rance after realizing the kid's all alone. GI1015: 17 years old. With nobody to keep him in check, Rance takes whatever quests he wants and becomes a serial harasser of women. He flirts and gropes as he pleases, which gets him into a few dangerous situations. He gets involved with a woman related to a criminal organization and nearly gets killed, but manages to get away. He gets tricked by a woman named Sally who ends up saddling him with debt, so he spends a few months hunting her down to get revenge. He gets involved in an incident where a wizard thinks he might be the Hero and wants to possess his body, but he kills the wizard. GI1016/LP0001: 18 years old. Meets Sill Plain in the month of April, 4 months before Rance 01 : The Quest For Hikari

    Nice work, very well thought out and presented. Just ran into this video as I've been revisiting Umineko again myself. I still hold the theory that the entire Umineko series exists in Ange's mind, as the tries to work out a very traumatic event that clearly defined her (the Rokkenjima massacre). With this mindset certain things start making sense in my view (e.g. the entire fight in EP8, between Bern and Lambda, being indeed the representation of her despair vs the certainty that Battler would come back... only for Featherine to rip Lambda apart, which can be seen as a representation of her certainty / hope being utterly destroyed when Ange reads Eva's diary and realized Battler would never come back to her). Totally unprovable interpretation of course, but it's still fun to theorize after all these years. Anyway, thanks for your video, I really enjoyed it! Gonna check out some of your other videos ;)

      Side note: i found it funny that on Last Note of the Golden Witch, Piece said: "To summarize, Ange's brain can call up virtual personalities at will, like parallel thought processing". It aligns very well with my view of Umineko, and well, just cracked me up :D

      As it long as it has heart, its a valid interpretation! And your's is an interesting one at thatI I can see some truth in it, and the fact we can piece all these ideas together is what makes Umineko such a fun ride, being one of the many reasons it sticks with us for so long. A couple months ago I made a video of one of the many ways to interpret the finale of Alliance from the perspective of Tohya. A lot of Ryuukishi's works contain an internal conflict manifested in outward form. I got the sense from Ciconia that Miyao's mental state and convictions have the power to change the world itself. It's an optimistic perspective that values human will rather than treating people as irrelevant, replaceable numbers. That hopeful outlook is all the more precious because Ryuukishi is an informed cynic and paints a credibly tainted and abusive world. At the same time, assailing that youthful hopefulness, phase 1 towards the end gave me a similar feeling to that of Umineko Episodes 1 & 2 where it feels like it's too late to change anything and the characters struggles are hopeless. I don't mind the delay in phase 2 because it gives me a chance to read phase 1 a third time to write down my final theory. Also, thanks for sharing your thoughts in video form

    And yet all the new lore, inconsistent writing and cringe try hard attempts of comedy drag it all down for me. Imo the original did a better job in communicating its themes. The Remake blows every minor event (french incident, Roa's current incarnation of Souya) into an epic tale, it's ridiculous. The tone is completely inconsistent. The original was somber through and through. Even comedy was sparse and subdued. In Remake the tone jumps from dark to funny so often it's jarring. Best example is the Shiki protects Ciel from Arcueid scene. The antagonists are laughable: Roa isn't a DAA tier threat anymore despite seeking out Arcueid to become the strongest DA was his original goal. Remake says he originally wanted to record/witness human history yet partakes in rituals that endanger the human species. Arcueid is a dumb yandere wench that wants to torture the only person (Shiki) she genuinely liked over a petty love drama. Noel is just a split off from OG Ciel that is as unlikable as Shinji Matou. And her only purpose is character development for the vanilla-af Remake Ciel. The only decent antagonist was Vlov. Unfortunately he gets squandered because Nasu uses him as a throwaway midboss like Nrvnqsr in the OG. And don't get me started on Far Side. Thanks to the Saikis, Arach and the supposed ritual teased in Remake we can safely assume Remake Far Side will be VERY different than OG Far Side. Great Idea! Let's muddle the best three routes of OG completely and throw in the Vampire chuuni nonsense from Near Side. OG Tsukihime was about showcasing the meaning of our fragile existence via the conflict between immortal vampires, a practically immortal vampire huntress, a dysfunctional yokai family with a protagonist constantly knocking in the door to death or insanity. As far as I can see Remake is about some weird vampires trying to destroy the world and Shiki+girl needs to stop them. Honestly Remake isn't Tsukihime, but FGO with a Tsukihime skin.

      That's very fair, it certainly takes on a whole new style that I've seen quite some criticism towards. It's two different takes that clearly shows the difference in Nasu who has changed over the years. Ultimately coming down to expectation and preference in the story design. I actually like this makes it so the Remake doesn't invalidate the old experience and actually gives reason to read both. The evevated stakes certainly take away the claustrophobic and personal appeal, but I feel did a good job at keeping the core of things in tact. It's two different styles and completely makes sense why it would be off putting if that somber atmosphere was a main draw. The characters for instance I thought were handled way better, with an additional human layer added to each. In Roa's case, his disinterest in the individual, but cherishment for humanity as a whole drove his his desire for immortality. From his view, the suffering of a minority his actions caused doesn't matter if it means he can prolong being humanity's overseer. This also further ties his love, hate, and jealosy towards Arcueid later on through emotions twisting and wishing to be that "ultimate being." For Arcueid, Shiki was the first one in all her life that gave feeling to her numbness of being no more than a weapon to those around her. To then have that everything snatched away, by one of the people she hated most no less, is sure to set her off. With this onset of feelings being so sudden, she never had the oppurtunity to mature and control those emotions in a way that seems fitting. Her mental maturity can kind of be seen similar to a child. A child that has wayyy to much power and is driven to take back what she wants. Noel is a thematic pillar to the route's theme of salvation, how following a path of indulgent dark desires in a mistaken attempt to be saved will only cause you to go further off that path. She was actually one of my favorite additions due to how well her unlikable, yet human characteristics were played up, while the ever-twisting complex emotions that plague her as a result of her past and current circumstances make her hatred and viciousness understandable. Vlov I really wish we get more of in some form or fashion. In the short amount of screentime he had, was pretty well built up and characterized. There just needs to be some decent tie into the main themes that can make him special. The changes here I feel places a greater emphasis on the "humanity" in this supernatrual phenomenon , which is something Nasu has shifted towards since the OG Tsukihime days. Although I personally felt the themes of the OG were much more nuanced and pronounced here with its deeper character exploration. That's one thing about the Far Side I'm sceptical about. By expanding the narrative beyond just the immediate Tohno family/manor with Arach and the Gotous, it might again take away that enclosed, personal feeling that makes the Red Side so special- not just in theme, but style as well. It could be the case that the vampire Arach stuff only bleeds into Satsuki's route and the Gotos are the only addition to the far side, which would probably only serve to deepen the Tohno families ties. I'm hoping the Goto stuff stays to just Akiha's route if they do play a major part, but with the added foreshadowing with Kohaku and Mio I want to see how its handled before making judgements. That said, your critisms understandable. A lot of this seems like a fundamental shift in how Nasu wants to write and convey his ideas, which are far different from his early 2000's writing.

      @justasoulsfan9805 2 місяці тому

      @@NeNeiSan So what you want to convey is that the Remake cast has their flaws and negative characters traits more on display. And this strengthens how Nasu conveys it's themes? Plus the Remakes approach is simply how Nasu developed over the years? While the latter one is VERY agreeable for me, I must say that I am not a fan of Nasu's development retarding the high stakes and epic fights. Because it doesn't feel earned most of the time and more like Nasu & Takeuchi just want to flex their muscles to make it as close to the Ufotable Adaptations as possible. I also didn't like this in FGO. The reason why I like Mahouyo so much is because it struck the perfect balance between chuuni action and mundane slice of life. As for the first thing. The added "humanity" as you called it. I see where you come from. But I can't share the same sentiment as you on a personal level. While you may be right about the added flaws bringing more nuance to the situation and deepen the meaning the story wants to convey, it doesn't work for me at all. Or it would be more accurate to say that the cast of Remake won depth but sacrificed likability in my book. Remake Shiki is miles better than his original counterpart. I don't know if it's because of the seiyuu but he feels much more of a person than in OG, although he's way too horny for my taste. But the characters he interacts with are very unlikable to me. Arihiko, Satsuki, Akiha and the maids are fine. But that is mainly because we haven't gotten to their routes yet. But the other characters... Arcueid is mostly intact in her Route but Ciel's Route turns her into an unlikable wench for me. I get the reason for it yet it makes it so jarring after reading the Arcueid route, the manga and OG Near Side first. Arcueid feels like a different character in Remake Ciel's Route. I already wrote that Noel is unlikable as Shinji Matou. And Ciel is plain boring now. Not to mention that she doesn't feel like she's the heroine of the Route because a lot of focus is given to Arcueid and Noel. I don't have much to say about the Saikis outside of being mysterious. Mario and his entourage kind of feels superfluous for me and Mario being so foul-mouthed feels over the top. As if Nasu wanted to redo Hans Christian Anderson. And Dr. Arach is just...hell no... Vlov was cool but he also feels kind of generic as a white hair anime vampire. I would put it like this: Nasu replaced the knock-off of Hellsing Alucard (Nrvnqsr was voiced by Jouji Nakata and his Soil of Genesis/Chaos was similar to Alucard's zero release and soul absorbtion) with a knock-off of Castlevania Alucard (stoic white haired anime vampire with a sword). So if most characters our MC interacts with are bland or unlikable it makes it frustrating to follow them on their adventure. Because you don't like them you don't care about their survival. And both OG Arcueid and OG Ciel might not be as fleshed out as their Remake counterparts or the FSN cast...but they were compelling enough that I wanted them to get a happy ending. Whereas in Remake... I literally don't care if Shiki, Arcueid, Ciel etc. die in the bad ends. Except Arcueid's "death" in her own Route (final confrontation with Roa). But that was due to how hard the Remake Arcueid route clinged to the old script anyways. If I compare this with Mahouyo for example...it's the opposite. Aoko is a total b*tch a lot of the time and Alice is cold and distant. You really can empathize with poor Soujuurou who is "forced" to live with these witches under one roof for months. But then they start to come closer and form bonds. They become more considerate to each other. And all of this leads to a wonderful climax where Aoko finally faces her fear and activate the fifth sorcery to save Soujuurou and stop Touko. And that after Soujuurou comes to their aid twice. It's a very good climax in all aspects. Thematically, emotionally and with good action on top of that. Tsukihime Remake might hit the note thematically. But emotionally and in terms of action? Idk. I already wrote that the cast is either bland or unlikable to me. As for action...the Remake has epic moments. But the pacing is awful for me. It reminds me of Mahouyo chapter 5a and 5b (basically the fight against the Aoko puppet and Flat Snark). My least favorite chapters of Mahouyo. The ideas behind these fights are clear. But it DRAGS on for hours. No matter how epic the climax is (f.e. Aoko kame-hame-has the moon and "Show time kyuuketsuki!") if I have to wait for hours on end for it to happen and it being executed it makes me wish to move on and getting annoyed.

    • @NeNeiSan
      @NeNeiSan 2 місяці тому

      Its mostly what part of them was fleshed out and how that further plays into the theme and cast dynamic. A lot of this, I feel, is just a fundamental difference in what we get out it. A lot of the stuff you mention, while I can see where your dislike comes from, I found to actually cause me to become more attached to the cast as a whole. Roa was not one I cared much for prior, with the Remake being the reason I now hold some interest in his character and wonder for his potential role in Red Garden. I'm most likely in the minority on this, but even when it is objectively dragged out, I don't mind slow or stagnate plot progression. As long it has variety in the scenarios and character interactions, it's welcome- of course this depends on the execution. If its done right, I hardly even notice the time fly by; only realizing when I end my reading session and get shocked at the time. For example: The Vlov fight. Progress was certainly slow, however Shiki's mental process whilst dancing with Vlov on the verge of death was very engaging. It could not be more different than the Nero fight, which I prefer much more, however itself was able to show more of Arcueid and Shiki in a teamwork dynamic. Further showing the inhuman side to Arcueid and, as a result, the contrast in her everyday attitude when not killing vampires. The more subdued "action" sequences fit much more in line with Tsukihime as a whole, but by adjusting expectations and looking at it as its own thing, I had a great time! Nothing wrong with that, just a difference in how we enjoy and look at these things!

      The regard and praise you have for it is well deserved! Tsukihime set a really good example of how a remake of a classic should be. You can tell how Nasu not only wanted to improve upon his old story writing wise, but mold it into something more expansive while carrying the essence of what Tsukihime is at its core. All of the characters I could write on and on about because there is so much depth, relatability, and meaning to them! There is a clear improvement in Nasu's writing quality that makes it exciting to see what else he will write in the future. For me, I can't quite decide what my favorite Type-Moon work is. Almost all of them have touched my heart in some way and depending on the day any of them may qualify for that "top spot" lol. The editing is all thanks to just how many assets TsukiRE's has! I wanted to test myself with all these and I could not be more happier that it was enjoyed! Thank you! It's amazing to think that this is only a half of what Nasu has in store for the remake. Many concepts were refined inside japanese pop-culture for a long time, including Schumann's resonance etc. Many things in nasuverse are in fact very common in New Age circles and gnostic movements. Some concepts even exist simultaneously in Fgo, Honkai-verse from China and New Age movements, such as the "resistance to civilization" and cycle of destruction.

      @NeNeiSan 2 місяці тому

      Thank you! Though I can see where that complaint comes from, I feel that there is a very good reason for it beyond Maeda's and Hisaya's differences in writing. Its feels that difference in Kouhei is because of the circumstances of how he meets those characters. With Maeda's routes, these girls are already a part of, or find their way into his life. His involvement with them is simply going along with the flow of events and where his whims take him. Whereas Kouhei deliberately seeks to connect with the heroines in Hisaya's routes, leading him to change quicker because he wants to be that upstanding person for them. One thing that makes Key stories so great is that they tend to leave a lot of character and story elements ambigious with room to fill in those dots yourself, Kouhei is no exception and a unqiue example of how childhood depression can shape someone's upbringing.

    • @phantomic109

      @@NeNeiSan I love how you put it! In a sense, saying that Kouhei is an inconsistent character is technically true. I think people just go about it wrong, because that inconsistency is part of who he is written to be. Morally speaking, he's not a great guy, because he acts on whims and does whatever he wants to do; if he wants to be nice to someone, he does that, but if not he will not hesitate to be a jerk to them. It's part of what makes him so compelling honestly! There's no consistency to his actions precisely because he himself doesn't have any aim or goal, and honestly that was a really clever writing choice even if it's hard for some people to appreciate (though I don't blame them for that lol, he's still very hard to like). Have you read the extra route in the original game, Natsuki route? If not, I think you'd really enjoy it, since it gives Kouhei some further build up, even despite being pretty short.

      Exactly! Kouhei as a character strikes a really good balance of a bad personality, which of course can turn people away, while having that very human core buried beneath if you dig into it. He can do some contemptible things, but he more importantly can understand his wrong doings and improve himself, casting away the side that causes hurt. The portrayal of that in tandem with the concept of eternity, is an unbelievably realistic way to explore this hole people can find themselves in. It was certainly a bold approach to have a protagonist like that, but from a writing standpoint they pulled his character off incredibly well! yes! Their dynamic was really nice and the support they gave one another was sweet! I was hoping her route would have been brought into the remake.

    Honestly, I feel like Higurashi Gou and Sotsu are sorely misunderstood and, at least to me, explain and expand concepts and characters that we as fans never even realized were left unanswered and open to further interpretation. I also find it highly ironic that a series like Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni that is severely misunderstood by the public gets a sequel series that is sorely misunderstood by the fans. I was very pleased and satisfied with how both Gou and Sotsu tied into the main canon of Higurashi and how it plays around with familiarity and subtle clues to new material in a way that is enticing to both new and old fans alike. I actually stayed away from both Gou and especially Sotsu for a long ass time simply because of what people on the internet had been saying about them sucking or being disappointing and, after taking a risk and trying to see if I could make sense out of all of the criticisms that I'd heard thrown against both of them, I was literally completely baffled at the end of Sotsu at how other people besides myself didn't appreciate Gou and Sotsu for what they succeed in doing with flying colors in my opinion. I found the expansions on all of the characters' that we've all grown to know and love genuinely well thought out as well as gut wrenching at times. I also completely understood how both Gou and Sotsu explained the subtle to more obvious changes in both plot and character elements as being consistent with one of the main themes of Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni in that you never truly understand your friends as well as you think you might and how you may not like what they turn out to be in the end, which is why Gou is literally playing with both new and long time fans expectations of the characters and story beats to lure you into a whole new way to understand just what exactly is truly going on in Hinamizawa and the people in it that you thought you finally understood all of the way through and I found that Sotsu did a commendable job in explaining why these subtle to obvious distortions in both story and characters in a way that totally makes sense if you look hard enough and are fully familiar with all of the lore and plot of Higurashi and are willing to stomach things about these characters that we all thought we knew and makes an insanely ballsy, and I would say completely successful, attempt to make the audience members brave enough to explore further into the subtext of the lore and characters of Higurashi question if they really knew the true feelings and thoughts of these characters and their motivations for doing what they do in the first parts of Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni at all in the first place, which is totally something that Higurashi has always done and challenges both new and long time fans of Higurashi to be able to stomach and understand how even the smallest changes or errors in these characters' words or actions can literally breed misunderstanding and eventually contempt between them. Those who have seen every part of Higurashi and studied it very thoroughly will know what I'm talking about. At the end of the day, Higurashi has always been a tragedy about overcoming misunderstanding and hate and I absolutely love how both Gou and Sotsu completely recontextualize what that means for the overall series and I fully believe that, if you give it a fair chance and look hard enough for yourself, you'll see that too.

      It's not just you, it kind of makes sense at the top, but then just devolves in organization by the end.
