One of the reasons I like Higanbana is how realistic abuse and bullying is portrayed, perhaps due to Ryukishi being a social worker himself. It's not disregarded as "children messing around", or exaggerated to a cringey degree for fanservice. Somewhere out there, these actions still happen in various institudes, either with or without the youkai's meddlings; and teachers do little to alleviate that or even take part in themselves. Aside from the horror aspects, some stories also teach you to not being passive, facing your troubles and stand up for yourself.

Higanbana for me has been one of my personal favorites of Ryukishi's works. I would put as tied best Japanese fictional story with Higurashi as both gave not only immense enjoyment but changed me into trying to be my best. It's harsh and cruel yet rewards the readers with honestly the best advice I've personally used. You don't remember these stories while down in the dumps nor do they cure anything just like that yet with small decisions and knowing in the mean time that things will become better with change and growth, it really does feel like a little someone is cheering you on. I have experienced that change and I wish for others to read it. I know my love for it is especially large, yet if I'd hadn't read it, I wouldn't have loved it as much as I do now.
It's worth that read, truly without a hint of regret in my words.

That voice that calls for growth I feel is something Ryukishi does splendidly-well in all of his works. Especially in here with Marie earnestly wishing for the well being of the many other characters.
Really glad to hear your thoughts on it and what it means to you! To tell stories and convey feelings like he does, Ryukishi is sure incredible!

Not many people talk about Higanbana and it makes me sad im currently reading the second night atm and I Love it so much, the contrast between hope and despair and the subject matter and themes are so well done, its not a story that tries to be preachy or overexaggerates its situations, it tries to portray bullying in a realistic way one that doesn't blame the characters but tries to make you understand the things they do. The Youkai supernatural aspect is also incredible, my favorite showcase of their intentions is Izanami in the second chapter of night two, hes a (cruel) youkai who shatters the poor worldview that aya had with a harsh and fearing method and by doing that she learned how in an ironic sense that her worldview was in itself pointless and that she controls her own destiny she decides to find meaning in a pointless world because so what if somethings pointless and meaningless? your alive aren't you make your own meaning, Izanami the cruel and harsh youkai shows the weak to live on their own terms and to stop wasting time thinking of things that are inherently pointless, I see him as self growth in one way.

I'm with with you there! It's especially surprising given its written by Ryukishi, one of the more well known writers in the VN industry. It handles such dark and sensitive topics really well without feeling edgy. It's a scarily relistic depiction of depression and trauma people go through, with the youkai aspect adding to that instead of blaming such things on the supernatrual. Using them to explain certain pyshcological phenomenon, like with Black Tea Gentlemen showing what happens when someone escapes too far from reality and becomes deluded.
Izanami and Aya's arc was probably my favorite as well, and know exactly what you mean. Their chapters were well-needed inspiration and hope for how one can get themselves out of a hole that seems inescapable. It's such a great set of stories that need more love!
Hope you enjoy the rest of it!

reading the first chapter of higanbana literally blew me away. i had no idea what i was in for, and man it hooked me so hard that i couldn't stop reading. every twist and turn of chapter one had me horrified and amazed. i have read a few more chapters but i'm not done with it yet. i really hope that it gets put on steam or somewhere so that it can be more accessible for people who can't read japanese!

Would love to have more people read Higanbana! It handles its sensitive topics not only in a way that is horrfyingly intriguing, but tastefully as well. It is one of those thrillers that makes you stop and think about it's messages.
Hope you enjoy the rest of it!

Now if only it got console remake treatment. Ive already lived through OG Ryuukishi art and lack of voice acting enough

That would be amazing! I quite liked the art, but voice acting would elevate the experience a ton. I was looking in the game files and saw that there was an Alchemist sprite of Marie which was interesting.

I would gladly work for free on new sprites for Higanbana, it's a shame I don't know how to work on ONscripter (the engine in which Higanbana was made)

      I would definitely reccomend it!
I watch them as well! I don't know too many, but other content creators I watch are Superange128 and Sleepy Crest
who make VN related content. Superange made a video called 'Ange Highlights 40 Notable Visual Novel UA-camrs' which I recommend if you want to find more people in the community!

this vn would have been soo much better with ps3 sprites

    • @NeNeiSan
      @NeNeiSan  15 днів тому

That and the usual 07th voice acting would be a huge improvement! Weird thing is that in the game files there is a single Alchemist sprite of Marie that we never see.
