🚴Cycling the Viking Coastal Trail
Viking Coastal Trail, is an excellent cycling trail in Thanet, very scenic.
We have been planning this trip since around Apr this year, but due to work, it didn't happen till June 2024.
Thanet District is approx 2.5 - 3 hrs northeast from the coast of Brighton and Hove, so the plan is to camp overnight, wake up the next morning have some breakfast, enjoy the sunrise, cycling the Viking Coastal Trail, enjoying the scenic spots thoroughout.
The coastal trail section is definitely a sight to behold, whilst the trail towards inland, journey after Cliffsend is less so, but still enjoyable. Overall there were about half a dozen or so hill climbs, most are off main roads.
The Hawk Place Campsite is right next to the Coastal Trail and is connected, very easy access to Minnis Bay and does offer pitches with and without electrical hookups. We booked 1 pitch (£21 in 2024) and is good for 2 tents with our cars parked nearby. It comes with basic facility like hot shower, clean drinking water, a portacabin converted into a kitchen with a kettle.
There are free parking in Minnis Bay too (for those looking to park and ride) and loads of coffee shops along the route.

My first postcard video for 2024! After months of hibernation, it was time to get on my bike once again. This time, I thought I would wonder around London aimlessly to see where I ended up and at the same time capture as many landmarks as possible. The weather was pretty mild that day and it was a perfect day for cycling around London. Enjoy! Music credit: BuGuMi - Jazz Trio loop music - Imagin...

Wonder if you were aware that there is a nice car free path along the sea shore linking the Winchelsea Beach Cafe with Rye Harbour and then there's a bike path (wide pavement) that follows the road from Rye Harbour to Rye - a bit longer but much more pleasant than riding on the roads with the motor traffic and better scenery.
Greetings from David, Kampar. I had moved to Kampar since Dec 2017 after manynyears in KL,PJ and Subang Jaya. I had cycled to Malim Nawar many times and had relatives still staying there too. It is a nice quiet town, famous for the 1943 Japanese Built Chimney for Carbide/Ammunitions and its closeness to the Limestone Pinnacles. Thank you for sharing.
Yep, I remembered that "chimney", shame I forgot to visit it.

Happy journey and good to see you are enjoying it... Penang is relatively hot compared to other big cities in Malaysia... Bring along sunscreen if your are coming for the second time... Cheers
Next one will be Round Island Singapore 2024
Wow! Quite interesting memory recall in this video and thanks for your fluent english as well as investing on a high quality camera... Very good presentation... I will certainly come to visit this small town one day and try out those nice foods... Consider my subscription a favour to your excellent work 😊
You are so kind. Nothing warms me more than to see my little videos of small towns and places get some attention. Many people often visits the big cities and they need no further intros, but these little gems offer something I never used to appreciate, the kindness of local people no matter who you are, curiosity of local people when they see strangers in town, but more importantly, for me at least it is the local food which did it for me.

Hi Old Dude, when is the next adventure?
...soooon. I am planning a local trip from Hastings to Rye soon. Weather is getting warm now, so it's high time to bring out the bike...may be a warm up cycle to worthing first. Watch this space :)
@@ODOB I look forward to it, please video. I'm back on my bike as well. My cheap mountain bike has some issues, I think with a creaking bottom bracket, but it's really not worth fixing so I am looking more towards the Brompton. Got a back pack that I hope fits, as well as two mini-panniers recommended by this guy ua-cam.com/video/d2WVKl1VGhs/v-deo.html (but I've not tried them on yet to test heel strike)
@@wayneriley7557 Isn't it amazing, how different people have come up with different ideas for rear bag/s, this is one I haven't seen before. On my travels, I have found that it becomes challenging once you have more than 2 bags, say when you are boarding the bus, or the train, I will sling the rear ruck sack (my preferred choice) over my shoulders, right hand carrying or pushing the bike, whilst left hand carrying the C bag. So far that worked for me...but always good see other systems. Cheers.
@@ODOB The small panniers arrived, and I tested one out this morning - no heel strike at all (I am 6ft, but only 10.5 size shoe). I have more trouble with my shoe getting stuck in the rack wheel. Now, just have to lose about 20kg from my own weight before I can add any gear to the bike as I am already at the official weight limit :(

Hi, It was nice of you to share this memory relocating video of your trip to Malim Nawar. Watching it, I reminisce my childhood days in Perak River Hydro,, the neighbouring Kampung Tanjung Bankung and the Chinese village behind the Ying Sing school. I do remember Sew Ng's No. 1 Bungalow, I use to go there to read his vast collection of comics. Wonderful video. Many thanks.
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
This is easily the best execution of this I've seen man.... amazing
I have not stuck to it, although it is very solid, but I have returned to using the wooden dowel technique as it is much much lighter. In my case, it is a sawn off aluminium tube 22.5 diameter x about a foot long, thread it through a piece of old cycle tubing (for cushioning and to avoid metal on metal rub), and then thread it under the Brooks B17 saddle and simply used reusable zip ties to strap the aluminium dowle in place, works a treat. The hollow aluminium tube is useful for storing spare zip ties too. I have used this method for more than a year now, and it is pretty solid. I wanted to use easily available / replaceable parts.

Thanks for the great riding adventured and truly interesting. Used to played foosball at Perak Hydro as alcohol kid. Cheer & till we meet again in your next adventure. I am alos a cyclist , riding road bike and a clone Brompton . By the way, if don't mine sharing your full name . We have a great group of guys from MN, Kampar and ACS students in our group.
Hello! I finished my MPS in 1980. Good to know there are so many avid cyclists. I will pm you later. Thanks for watching bud 😀
How long did you take for the whole journey? First day is 9 hours, how about the second day? Planning a trip riding foldie too. Can’t use road bike’s speed to compare
I think the entire round island is approx 45-50 miles, so it is entirely possible to do the whole journey in one day on a road bike. I did it in 2 days, because I am old and riding a foldie, but also that I had to stop frequently to film, walk back to fetch the camera and so on. But also that I wanted to enjoy the trip, I didn't do the trip to break any record :). 2nd day, from Teluk Bahang back to starting point at the hostel was about 3 hrs (from memory), so it wasn't too far, by that time I got hooked and decided to go beyond just the round island, so I've decided to complete the round island and take the ferry across to Butterworth, hoping to cycle all the way to Taiping in 2 days, but I had to change my plan on arrival in Simpang Ampat, in order to speed things up, so that I can be in KL to meet some friends and family the week end. My max per day is typically 30 - 40 miles, the more hills the less the distance, avr speed is typically 5 - 7 miles on flat terrain. Thanks for watching.
@@ODOB thanks for reply. Whole video was nice and clear as well. You should try a Round island trip around Singapore as well. 120+ Km. Should be doable in a day as there are a lot less slopes.
@@jisd84 RI SG is a great idea. Thinking about it. Cheers.

@@ODOB Oh dear, no pressure :) I'm planning a 2week ride at the end of March. I did this last year around Suffolk / Norfolk on an old mountain bike, but given the terrain (fields / swamps) that Google Maps took me down I'd not risk it on the Brompton. I need somewhere warmer and drier.

I'm learning...thanks 👍 My main take away from these particular videos is, what not what to do! I can't see any enjoyment cycling those highways for any extended time and as you point out, it is or can be dangerous. So I'll plot my routes via the back roads where possible and if not then I'll just bus, coach, taxi or train between the towns. Which will actually give me more time in some of the towns to explore. Can't wait...
Totally, I had always thought there'd be "back roads", like you do in most parts of the UK. But not so in Serdang area, even between villages and townships, a few miles apart, you'd have to take the highways, on occasions where I did follow the sat nav (OSMAND+) for smaller roads, it would lead me to roads that's been decommissioned, and by then I was already knackered and so opted to take the highway instead. I suppose you could spend more time on google map and more research, but I was not in any real hurry, so it all became part of the adventure. In my next and final trip to Jenjarom, I could have taken shortcuts through palm oil plantations insterad of the busy highways, but only found out once I had got home :) nevermind.
Thanks for sharing - always interesting. There looked to be hardly any traffic at the start, but I guess it was early hours - then it picked up quite a bit. I noticed for the first time that there were no classic 'bunny ears' sticking up for the Brompton gears on your handlebars. I assume you have gears, so have you 'inverted' them, or do you use something else?
I think since 2017 (?) Brompton created a new gearing shifter, that goes under the handlebar instead of the old "bunny ears". They even have an all new re-designed superlight titanium version but it does cost an arm and a leg.
@@ODOB Showing my lack of knowledge of the Bromiverse. I clearly need an upgrade
P.S. also explains why turning my brompton upside down to change a tyre is such a pain
@@wayneriley7557 with the Bromtpon I generally do keep the pressure quite high, and with Schwalbe Marathon, I have not had a puncture for more than 2 years. Low pressure tyre pinch is quite common with slim ish tyres.
👍Thankyou. More good info - The No bikes sign was a bit scary... I was surprised to see on the train journey that your folded bike was in clear view, wheels and all. So I'm assuming there is no security check on the bags. That would be good news. A quick question - Are there Malaysia specific apps for pre-booking accommodation?
I have been using Booking.com app, works a treat. I have used it for hostel, motels and hotels. I didn't have any issue (yet). On hind sight, I could have hidden the bike a bit better, and no, the ticket conductor did not even bother to check. That's what I call an adventure :)
Mr.Hazzelegrave was the Station Superintendent and Mr. Alfred Simon was the last British Station Superintendent then followed by my Dad.
Goodness, I am glad you are here and managed to fill in some of the gaps in my memory. I was about 11 or 12 when I first heard of Mr.Hazzlegrave, I am not aware of Alfred Simon. It was a good 3-4 years or so later that most of the below had left and many of those bungalows were left unoccupied that we were able to move in. I remembered seniors like Mr. Bunny Khoo (RIP), Mr.Ang, Mr. Oh who left an antique motorbike, live close to a Mr. Ng (unless there's another Ng of similar high rank, this could be your dad!!), I recalled Mr. Ng, was near retirement then, and I recalled a son at least 5 -6 years older than me, so I would guess he'd be about 60 now. Mr Looi CH (RIP), Mr. Wong (nicknamed German), Mr.Wong YC , I only know them by their surname. I am aware of the last 2, still in Ipoh. When was your last visit to MN? Anyway good to talk. Regards to your family.
