  • Ep 2 - Ipoh, down memory lane
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
Following my arrival in Malaysia, I did a trial ride around places I used to roam as a teenager around Ipoh City, visiting and sampling all the great food stalls on the way and one more for the road :)

This is great. I had subscribed a while back, then saw the new vids. Awesome you have gone (back) to Malaysia as the next thing I want to do is Singapore to Vietnam. I watched your airport journey (forgetting you were on a Brompton) and was thinking, 'where is your bike box?'. I've just come back from a week in Thailand and 7 weeks in Australia where I flew with my Brompton in a B&W case - it couldn't have been easier - just had to take it to Oversize Luggage after check-in (and Qatar actually did that for me, no wonder they have been voted best airline in the world for a while) but no excess baggage fee (as long as you buy the extra weight / item in advance, of course). I could not be happier with the experience, and having the Brommie in Australia saved me thousands of AUD on a hire care for the limited area I was travelling in. Hopefully other videos will show what you packed, and how long you were there, as the only thing putting me off long distance on the Brompton is the amount I can take with me - I'm a big guy, over 100kg (yes, I know, I need to lose some weight - but even 'fighting fit' I'd be 80-90kg)

Wow, that was the longest comment I had ever received. There's another dude doing something similar to you @OAP Meander is doing the Singapore to Malaysia route. It would be interesting to watch both your experiences, OAP Meander is already a hardcore trike cyclist, but he is planning to take a Brompton this time, due to ease of transportation.
My setup, so many examples on the internet, I hadn't bothered really, but the front bag is mostly if not all my electronics, laptop (movie editing) batteries, charges, bike pump, rain jacket (easy access), bike lights, totalling ~ 8kgs, and
the rear ruck sack (65L) was filled largely with a tent, sleep mat, sleep bag, which I don't need, as in Malaysia you'd find accomodation, home stays, hostel easily via Booking.com, a pair of jean, couple of T shirts, cycling shorts and tops (2 sets), toiletries and paper for "emergency", bike tools, spare parts nuts, spokes. I took all these stuff, just to see how I would cope for longer colder journeys in the future - totalling ~12kgs (I did have to carry other stuff prezzies and souvenirs for friends and family).
Seriously though, you could get most things in Malaysia, so you could travel light and if need be then you still have the option to buy the item in Malaysia.
I spent 4 weeks in Malaysia but only cycled about 10 days or so and not continuously, I am a super light weight cyclist :) in contrast to the other hardcores, I only did a little over 200 miles, but thoroughly enjoyed it, mind you there are moments less so e.g. the city traffic, the lack of pedestrian/cycling infrastructure OH...one other thing, keep your eyes on the road/cycle path, it is not uncommon to find uncovered manholes, or metal cover/grill wider than a Brompton wheel and if you hit one of these, then it's game over.
      Have a great trip.

So glad I found your channel.
I will be going to Singapore/Malaysia end of Feb into March 2023 and riding around Singapore and up the west coast of Malaysia to Penang on my Brompton.
    Thats the plan anyway.
These videos in Malaysia are showing me that it's going to be great...Thank You 👍

You're gonna love Penang RI, the east coast is easy, the west coast, lacks cycle path, but thankfully not too much traffic. Furthermore, Feb means end of moonsoon rainy season, so should be ok.
Crossing over to Butterworth and heading south, would require you getting used to really busy highways, there aren't any cycle path to shield you from busy roads, plus loads of flyovers, which I find challenging and often requires I go on 7th gear (walking)...oh, get yourself an arm sleeve preferably of light colour, you're gonna need it for the heat is quite intense from about noon onwards. Would love to hear how it all went.
Next year, I am planning to do the Singapore RI.
      Cheers and have fun.

@@ODOB Thanks for even more info, I've replied to your other comments on my channel, thankyou.
I intentionally booked in order to try and miss the monsoon rains, hope I'm lucky with that.
The arm protectors are on my shopping list, will pick those up in Singapore.
Not sure how I'm going to get up to Penang yet as I need to get back to Kuala Lumpur for my flight back. I'll probably cycle mostly from Singapore up to Kuala Lumpur then train/coach whatever up to Penang.
But you have already opened my eyes to other areas south of Penang like Ipoh and Taiping.
I suspect I'll just wing it whilst on the hoof and just hope I do not run out of time...and money!
I'll be posting UA-cam vids of the adventure (I hope) early next year.
      Good luck 👍
