  • Ep 9 - A little town called Malim Nawar
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    My home town, my hood.
    It is a very small town and back in 40s, 50s, 60s was one of many tin ore mining towns dotted all over Kinta District of Perak state.
    The town was changed forever when the railway crossing was removed and the main road permanently severed leaving Malim Nawar divided into 2 parts, the "new town" and "the "old town", now connected only through a flyover (Malaysia has a lot of flyovers).
    Many areas that were once opened to the public are now closed off and fenced off, such as my old schools and the old Perak River Hydro Power station, which back in the old days, was like a park, with beautiful colonial inspired houses on stilts fused with Malaysian architecture. I used to live in one of these bungalows.
    (Unfortunately I have lost the footage of the ride from Ipoh to Malim Nawar, and all that's left were footage taken on my mobile phone).
    Enjoy.

    Greetings from David, Kampar. I had moved to Kampar since Dec 2017 after manynyears in KL,PJ and Subang Jaya. I had cycled to Malim Nawar many times and had relatives still staying there too. It is a nice quiet town,famous for the 1943 Japanese Built Chimney for Carbide/Ammunitions and its closeness to the Limestone Pinnacles.
    Thank you for sharing.

    Hi, It was nice of you to share this memory relocating video of your trip to Malim Nawar.
    Watching it, I reminisce my childhood days in Perak River Hydro,, the neighbouring Kampung Tanjung Bankung and the Chinese village behind the Ying Sing school.
    I do remember Sew Ng's No. 1 Bungalow, I use to go there to read his vast collection of comics. Wonderful video. Many thanks.

      No 1 Bungalow, is this the one right outside the gate into Perak Hydro (fenced up area)?
      If so, I seems to recall a Mr.Hazzlegrave (nicknamed Hazzleblade) considered the most senior executive used to live there at one stage. Does that ring a bell?

    Mr.Hazzelegrave was the Station Superintendent and Mr. Alfred Simon was the last British Station Superintendent then followed by my Dad.

    • @ODOB
      @ODOB  Рік тому +1

      Goodness, I am glad you are here and managed to fill in some of the gaps in my memory. I was about 11 or 12 when I first heard of Mr.Hazzlegrave, I am not aware of Alfred Simon. It was a good 3-4 years or so later that most of the below had left and many of those bungalows were left unoccupied that we were able to move in.
      I remembered seniors like Mr. Bunny Khoo (RIP), Mr.Ang, Mr. Oh who left an antique motorbike, live close to a Mr. Ng (unless there's another Ng of similar high rank, this could be your dad!!),
      I recalled Mr. Ng, was near retirement then, and I recalled a son at least 5 -6 years older than me, so I would guess he'd be about 60 now.
      Mr Looi CH (RIP), Mr. Wong (nicknamed German), Mr.Wong YC , I only know them by their surname. I am aware of the last 2, still in Ipoh.
      When was your last visit to MN?
      Anyway good to talk. Regards to your family.

      You are so kind. Nothing warms me more than to see my little videos of small towns and places get some attention. Many people often visits the big cities and they need no further intros, but these little gems offer something I never used to appreciate, the kindness of local people no matter who you are, curiosity of local people when they see strangers in town, but more importantly, for me at least it is the local food which did it for me.

      Out of curiosity when were you there? Back in the 70's it was really vibrant, but each time I return, it seems to have become even queiter especially since the have divided the old from new town. They have even decommissioned the train station which was right next to Perak Hydro.

    Must be nice to go back to the places you lived long ago and see how things have changed, for better or worse. Did you find your old bicycle and use it to ride around? Either that or the Brommie suddenly got quite rusty :)

    • @ODOB
      @ODOB  Рік тому

      ha ha, yes, I borrowed somebody elses bike, as I was planning to go into shops for "look see" and didn't want to leave the bike unattended. @@ODOB Check out this Brompton UA-camr: www.youtube.com/@Lady_Brompton/videos. A different angle, quite humorous, but also some that puts the commentary on later. I like this approach that you both have, as when riding I don't always think to say anything so it's just the sound of my dying chain clanking (I am 1/2 deaf, so don't hear these tell-tale sounds of the need for maintenance). What do you use to record your audio, and what software do you use for editing. I've looked at a few open-source things (I am a PC user) and they seem so complex.

    • @ODOB
      @ODOB  Рік тому

      @@wayneriley7557 crikey, never thought there's such a thing as Brompton soft porn.
      I basically used my mobile phone's sound recorder (on a Galaxy S21), if I try to record speech when cycling, it just doesn't work, because of traffic noise, also I hadn't done any research on the surroundings. Besides, there's no room for more electronics.
      For editing I just used Powerdirector (for PC), it's light weight and seems to work fine, I did try Premiere Pro but it's overly complicated.
