Hello - welcome to my channel
I'm a landscape artist based in Cornwall UK. Working outdoors is a major part of my practice. I'm out sketching most mornings with Basil - my dog. These sketches are in mixed media and I love trying different sketchbooks.
During 2023 I have been elected Associate member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and elected full member of The Pastel Society in June 2023. Both fantastic achievements that I am very proud of!
I also took part in Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2024 as a main contestant (in the pods) - airing on UK tv in January 2024.
I try to post a different video each Sunday - plein air painting, studio artwork, drawing and sketchbooks.
Follow me on Twitter (@BarrowmanArtist) and Instagram (andrew.barrowman) where I post daily stories from my morning sketching trips. Check out my 'Buy me a coffee' page if you'd like to contribute to my art materials.
Thank you for your support, please subscribe and bye for now - Andrew

Plein Air Oil Painting on the cliffs | Bedruthan Steps
Переглядів 4,1 тис.21 день тому
Oil painting en plein air on the cliffs near Bedruthan Steps on the North Cornwall coast. What a great afternoon I had, painting the incredibly dramatic coastline on the North Cornwall coast. It was beautiful but like most clifftop locations - it was windy! I am currently working towards an exhibition at Whitewater Contemporary Gallery in Polzeath. The subject matter will be paintings from this...

Plein Air oil sketch in my garden | garden tap & flowers
Переглядів 3 тис.2 місяці тому
Hi everyone Something different this week. The weather was so nice I thought I'd spend an afternoon in my garden doing a plein air oil sketch. The subject I chose was the garden tap & Aquilegia flowers that grow underneath it. I really enjoyed this challenge - and so did Basil as he snoozed in the sun! I even found out the various names of the lovely pink cottage garden flowers (such as Granny'...

Hi there At last the sun is shining! Time for some plein air oil painting in the beautiful landscape of The Penrose Estate, near Porthleven here in Cornwall, on a lovely May afternoon. Cornwall paintings | my current exhibition in Porthleven

Hi everyone I have been very busy recently preparing the paintings for my exhibition at The Customs House Gallery in Porthleven. I have eight oil paintings in the exhibition which I have framed myself in my studio at Krowji, Redruth. They range from a large metre square oil on canvas of Porthleven harbour, down to a tiny oil on board study of a sunset at Gwithian. The exhibition focuses on work...
Plein Air Landscape Painting | Cold & Windy in Cornwall
Переглядів 4,9 тис.3 місяці тому
Plein air oil painting the landscape in Cornwall, on a cold and very windy morning near Godolphin Hill. I chose a barren landscape as my subject for this outdoor (en plein air) painting in oils. I love the emptiness of these landscapes - however, it proved difficult to paint in the conditions! All good fun (and practice) though! Like the video? Welcome to my charcoal drawing video. Today I'm drawing a view of the magnificent Cape Cornwall using willow charcoal. The drawing measures 40cm x 30cm and is on Fabriano Academia paper. I used willow charcoal sticks, a paper blending stump, willow charcoal powder, Tombow eraser and a craft knife blade. Hope you enjoy the video. If you liked the drawing - here's a link to some of my drawings on...

Landscape Painting with Soft Pastels
After applying linseed oil or thinner for blanding with oil pastels, could I apply fixative or varnish directly? How long should I wait for the linseed oil to dry before varnishing it? Does acrylic varnish work on linseed oil or thinner?
I like your "attack" on your neighborhood. 😂Wish I lived by the sea, instead I live in the desert. (beautiful too) Something about how you ....dive..into your painting, drawings that inspires my work.
Love looking at sketch books .i love the rawness and freedom of the strokes put down . Thank you for sharing them . The farm one is amazing not that I don’t think the same of all of your others ,I just love the subject . 😊
Nice work all those greens 💚 colour match good depth more please 🙏
Thank you 🙏🏻
Amazing !!!!
Thank you so much ☺️
I hate the winky legs of these easels!
They are a bit spindly
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt I have a half box that I use and love, but I make sure to have clamps to shore up the legs!
Lovely sketches. I can almost feel that I'm there.
Glad you enjoyed it - thank you
Great technique. Are you working on watercolor paper?
Thank you. I’m using a hot pressed heavyweight watercolour paper for this one
I'm just starting to paint. Is a bad oil paint? Should I return it and try some other brand? Please help me. And thank you in advance.
I read in the comments below that they are a strange combination of colours. Why they say so?
They are ok for beginners then try upgrading to Artist quality of brands like Winsor & Newton or Michael Harding
There are some very bright colours that may not be used very often
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt thank you. I'll start with these then. About those bright colors, I guess I can mix it with titanium white then
Как чёрно-белые фото- очень красиво ООО!!!❤
Wowww
AMO
Thanks for this. I was about to buy yet another bottle of medium that wold dry up in no time!
And I know that you can't use a ruler...It used to be very difficult to learn. Everything was difficult even for insiders
This was really pleasant to watch, I might get me a set of those too :)
Wonderful! ❤
Wow, your charcoal works are exceptional. I am struggling with my new Kahdi paper too. But, it is helping me loosen up.

you try then
Genial, como siempre. Un saludo
Chap, that was a masterclass from a real artist. Thank you.
Very nice! It looks perfect in your plaid frame! 😉
Dear Andrew. You are a magician! Greetings from the other side of the Channel. By the way, we have very similar landscapes as your beautiful Cornwall in some of the westernmost points of Bretagne. Christophe.
As always, a beautiful painting. what could be better than painting by the sea, the sounds and even the wind.
Florence is always a good choice. :)
Definitely 👍🏻
Awesome drawing bro! Now I want to pull out some charcoal..... Jimi is always an excellent choice! :)
Thank you very much. Can’t go wrong with Jimi 🎸
Really enjoyed this one many thanks.
Lovely video - Thankyou. Your colours of sea and sand are a perfect when initially the sea looked (to me) too dark! Brilliant.
Many thanks Richard
I love your painting work Andrew! On a H&S note, I have moved over to citrus-based solvent, find it really good. I also don't clean the long-handle brushes, just leave them standing in walnut oil with a few drops of clove oil. I know you have your own methods but just thought I would mention it.
Thank you Matty for your kind comments - I don't mind the turps outdoors, I find it works better than other 'solvents' but am always open to try new ideas
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Hi Andrew, yes I see your point, in the fresh air there is usually lots of ventilation! Just though I would report my findings. I have been plein-airing here in Germany this summer and am not looking forward to the cold season, as I don't think I am very hardy. Keep up the inspiring videos, please!
Hello from Canada! I’m a new subscriber and just wanted to let you know I am really enjoying your channel! Really great work you are very talented and this particular piece of your garden top and flowers is truly wonderful! ❤
thank you so much - glad to have you with us
Thanks Andrew, your sketchbook paintings have given me so much inspiration.
My pleasure my friend 😊
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with these wonderful videos. My you tube highlight. Absolutely brilliant. And thanks Maddie for your brilliant production. You’re a talent!
Thank you so much. I appreciate your comments and support 😃
Thank you so much Andrew i just stumbled across you site and I'm so glad I did as you have inspired me to go back to charcoal. I did a drawing this morning of our cottage I sat up on the footpath above the cottage at 5.30am this morning and I'm so happy with what I did and it's all down to you.
That’s amazing. Thank you so much ☺️
Thanks Andrew and Madeline for a great video, love the painting, looks like our Queensland weather at present mate, greetings from Australia 🇦🇺.
You’re welcome Michael All the best
Absolutely magnificent 😊
Thank you very much Barbara
Lovely scene to paint Andrew well captured in testing conditions :-)
Thank you so much Keith
Beautiful Andrew . Love the sound of the sea in the background.☘️
Thanks Rosemary
Love those soft supple brushes Andrew, I’ll have to get some of those. You cranked up the summer look a bit, I preferred the darker sand and more purple wet areas. Nice to be able to play God with the sunshine in Cornwall. 👍
Hi Jim Someone has to make the effort this summer as the weather has been quite disappointing so far 🤩
I love your work. Fantastic finish and so glad you didn't put the trees in. Great to watch.
Thank you very much Annette
You just get better and better Andrew!
Thanks so much Judith
Wonderful feeling of Summer.
Thank you Mike
Another good 'un, in challenging conditions. The one thing - the ONLY thing - that I'd suggest to you inspired by Bob Ross is that he taped the metal ferrules of his brushes to reduce glare from the TV cameras: I'd find that a bit of a faff, but it might help when paintng outdoors: just a thought - I always get into trouble when I criticize Bob Ross, but shall we just say he had nothing else to teach you. The Pthalo blue ready-mixed with white: it wouldn't occur to me to buy that, but presumably it saves a lot of time when you're out and about, because Pthalo Blue is a bugger to mix with anything from scratch: as you will well know, it gobbles up anything you mix with it and spits it out - I treat it with great caution: I even prefer the old standby, Prussian Blue - hell, I'd use Indigo in preference to Pthalo .... but, well, no - no I probably wouldn't. Anyway! Always a pleasure to watch your videos, and instructive too.
Thank you so much for the suggestion Robert. I will definitely try the tape over the ferrules because it is blinding in the sun. All the best my friend
Beautiful view, nicely captured!
Thank you very much
Which blues do you use for the sky? Great studies!
thank you - usually I use Manganese Blue and Ultramarine Blue, sometimes Cobalt

Lovely as always. So today I was sketching in watercolor a very similar scene on the Pacific coast of Oregon big rocks like yours. So funny to be watching this tonight. Enjoyed as always

So lovely, wonderful work.
Thank you Andrew for braving the wind! The painting is wonderful. It looks like I can go splashing through the water on the beach.
