Hello - welcome to my channel
I'm a landscape artist based in Cornwall UK. Working outdoors is a major part of my practice. I'm out sketching most mornings with Basil - my dog. These sketches are in mixed media and I love trying different sketchbooks.
I am an Associate member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and a full member of The Pastel Society. Both fantastic achievements that I am very proud of!
I also took part in Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2024 as a main contestant (in the pods) - airing on UK tv in January 2024.
I try to post a different video each Sunday - plein air painting, studio artwork, drawing and sketchbooks.
Follow me on Instagram (andrew.barrowman) where I post daily stories from my morning sketching trips. Check out my 'Buy me a coffee' page if you'd like to contribute to my art materials. Also, please take a look at my website and let me know what you think.
Thank you for your support, please subscribe and bye for now - Andrew

Enjoyed this peaceful and relaxing video w you and Basil! Beautiful colors in your drawing as well. 😊. Thanks for sharing w us!
I must say: You've got to paint that beech tree that you were sitting besides. It's quite a character.
Im now wishing for oil pastels and trying your credit card technique You make an ordinary woodsy scene beautiful. Hello to Basil
What should we start the bidding at for this picture?
so nice!! love the sketches they are beautiful! My 11 year old standard poodle Virgil goes out sketching with me all the time too, they are the best!
Great work, I can't say I've ever used oil pastels.
Your layers and textures and mark making, and freedom when you create make my heart sing!😊
Always good to see your work - and Basil, of course... not the best weather for plein air, but you seem to thrive on it: maybe Basil not so much...
Really good video and your sketch as well. Enjoyed looking! Greetings!
Thanks for bringing us along on this plein air outing! Basil is the BEST boy for being so patient! I'm going to have to do a deep dive on the paper, which sounds really interesting, and I love the look of the oil pastels on it.
Inspirational Andrew, what breed is Basil ?
Basil looks enthralled…..
Just love your videos Andrew. You have given me the confidence to work in oil pastels . Thank you☘️
Very peaceful way to start my Sunday morning, thank you Andrew and Basil 👏
#1. I'm in love with Basil! #2. I REALLY love how you work with oil pastels, I've never seen anyone do it like you. I'm going to give that credit card thing a go!
Hi Melissa - Basil says hello (although he is a bit miserable today as it's stormy outside (storm Bert!))
Great video Andrew! I like the look of your footage. What do you use to film with?
Hi Danny - how are you my friend? I am using my iPhone 11 here - can't afford anything else lol
@ haha. That’s awesome. You know what, I mostly film with an iPhone 11 as well! That must’ve been why I liked it so much! It’s a great video and felt like I was in the woods with you. I might have to try out pastels sometime
Beautiful work :) Is it just a normal flat brush you use or is it a watercolour brush?
Thank you - it's a regular flat brush for acrylic or watercolour. Definitely not expensive sable though
I live in Breage
Not too far away then
Beautiful, thank you for taking us on your oil stick adventure. You're a pleasure to listen to.
Thank you very much!
Trying to translate how you do oils into acrylic. Think I will need to get some acrylic repartee/ extender or go for an acrylic with long dry time.
A way of slowing acrylic drying would be good - especially if working outdoors in the summer
Like the fact you charcoal so many subjects! Can these sketches be used on cards? ( Cards gifted to friends?) I find charcoal nice to work with, also the results it gives but, as a beginner am not sure how to present it. I have a gessoed canvas, so may try this. Thanks.
Thank you so much - I do need to make prints of the charcoal work
I am Obsessed with this video😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you. Glad you love it
2hen are you going to do another silver point?
That may be something to try over Christmas
Really like to use charcoal but as a beginner don’t know what simple subjects to start with? Don’t do portraits. When my hand is out of plaster may try a small landscape. Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks for painting.
I would start with some landscapes or maybe a simple still life subject to get the hang of the shading etc
@ Did a charcoal & white conte, still life last year, tremendous fun. Thanks
Very good Andrew you make it look easy😂
thank you so much
If I may make a comment I think the white water is the focal point of this painting however it does not stand up. This because the value of the white water is too similar to the value of the sea and of the sand. Or am I wrong ?
Thank you for your comments. I enjoyed doing this painting but never really liked it. There are many areas that don't work well - I will probably paint over it one day
It's lovely
thank you
Interesting work even though you used warm colours for the background and a cool green and blue for the foreground. Unusual. It worked somehow but in a tutorial painting it should be mention that it could turn out flat as a pankake
Thank you so much for your input 😀 It wasn't really a tutorial - more of an experience to be shared with the viewers
Nice work Andrew. Charcoal medium captures the winterscape really well. Great soundtrack. Cheers 😊
Many thanks Michael
Wow
thank you
Just brilliant 😊
thank you very much
Some great books there. Heres my top 5 - 5 - Degas: The Complete Etchings, Lithographd and Monotypes 4 - Tarkovsky - Film Stills, Polaroids and Writings 3 - Robert Longo - Lumunious Discontent 2. Robert Kipniss - Intaglios 1982-2004 1. Federica Galli - Green Grand Tour
Thank you for these suggestions Alex. I will look into them
Amazing work!❤
Thank you! 😄
That was gr8, awesome work dude 👍.
Thank you 🙏🏻
@AndrewBarrowmanArt 😁👍
Love the process……. Beautiful ❤
Thank you so much!
Incredible ❤
Thank you
Love the video❤
Thank you so much
As an amateur watercolorist your studio shows me the things we have in common and the things that are very different. I react to solvents so I have wanted to try oil but I probably will not. I love how real your studio is, with the sink and all the work in various stages.
Thank you very much. Try oils just straight from the tubes. Wash brushes with soap and water - no real need for solvents
@ okay, good to know.
Nice painting. Love the cows.
Thank you very much - it was a lot of fun (apart from the pesky flies!)
Music from rainbow bridge………and great charcoal art. You are too cool. Love it. Thanks.
Thank you! Cheers!
Tell me the name of the song
Beautiful work as usual Andrew. What type of camera are you using? Photo looks great too.
Thank you. I use a Fuji xpro 2 (which is not brilliant for video) and my iPhone camera 👍🏻
Hello , Glad I came across your UA-cam channel today. You teach and share with such a calm energy. If you could answer two questions I have for you regarding soft chalk sketching - 1) what does one use to prime a paper so that the chalk sketching stays on with a good hold and 2) what is the final step of protecting such pieces of work, do you spray a certain type of varnish? If yes, which one have you tried and liked so far ?
Thank you for your comments and support. I don't think I primed this paper - sometimes I use gesso. You can spray fixative to protect but the best thing is to frame behind glass without fixing (but that is expensive)
I was puzzled by your use of rough watercolour paper until you zoomed in on the black and white photo and saw the light texture marks. The heavy paper texture really helped to bring this out. Looked like fun to do!
Thank you very much. It was a difficult paper to work on but a lot of fun 🤩
absolutely gorgeous drawing. I is inspiring me to use graphite in a more painterly way. thank you
Wonderful - that is great news
Photo real with just enough painterly strokes & charcoal smudge. Very good perfect work EBabcock Az USA
Thank you so much ☺️
Amazing as always!
Thank you Barbara
Magical to see it all come together - brilliant - thank you
Thank you very much
😮THe size of that graphite powder bag.😮😮😮
It is way too big lol
Wonderful to see you dancing in a way on that khadi paper...btw...about the cataloque? Is it still availeble? Greetings, Jan
Thank you Jan - I would email the gallery Whitewater Contemporary in Polzeath and Nick will know if there are any available
