Plein Air oil sketch in my garden | garden tap & flowers

- Hi everyone
Something different this week. The weather was so nice I thought I'd spend an afternoon in my garden doing a plein air oil sketch. The subject I chose was the garden tap & Aquilegia flowers that grow underneath it.
I really enjoyed this challenge - and so did Basil as he snoozed in the sun! I even found out the various names of the lovely pink cottage garden flowers (such as Granny's Bonnet, Aquilegia and Columbine)!
I used a medium sized Rosemary & Co rigger brush, an Ivory flat (also by R & Co) and a cheap medium sized natural bristle round.
Hope you enjoy the video and listening to the garden birds as they go about their business on a May afternoon.
Like the video? Why not buy me a coffee?

Absolutely delightful in it's simplicity! There is beauty in everyday things around us if we stop to observe. That flower is a Columbine. It's a perennial so it will come back year after year! Paint it again next season!
Thank you very much - I love these Columbine flowers
No matter what you paint, it is always inspiring and beautiful!!!!
Thank you Birgit
The columbine looked very much at home as did other plants un the garden. These miniature landscapes appear under our noses, and may look simple but are anything but. A good job you are not in Brixham!
Yes - I heard you had some awful weather there
Thank you for such a lovely video. So inspiring when I think “I’ve nothing to paint”! Love all your textures and subtleties. Bravo!
Thank you so much
Andrew, thank you for another wonderful painting. The subject doesn't matter; it's the mind (heart/soul) that experiences life and passes it on. Well done.
My pleasure Gary and thank you for your thoughtful words
I think that flowers can be some of the most difficult things to paint. You did very well though! Great to see everyday things as the subject of art.
Thank you Dan
I absolutely loved the painting and adored the birdsong , infact adored it all , thank you x
Thanks so much Anthea
😊
Lovely idea. Get where you're coming from, a simple subject, being quite difficult. I painted a cup in my garden and it was actually difficult compared to painting animals, flowers, landscape etc. Thanks for the videos they are very inspiring 😊
Thank you very much Stephanie
I love all your work, but there is something special about this piece . I love it . Cookie was happy to see Basil
Thank you very much Barbara
Excellent study! Looking forward to your next painting.
Thank you very much
Basil enjoying the sun! this is really lovely! its just amazing when we realize the vast amount of things we see and can paint! thank you for the video today! you might enjoy looking up Duane Keiser in USA -a painting a day.
Thank you for watching and recommending Duane's work. He has a massive following on Instagram
Hi Andrew. 'Aqualegia'. Nice study of a simple subject. Good to see Basil enjoying the sunshine. Got to see your exhibition at Porthleven. Lovely work. Cheers 😊.
Many thanks. Glad to hear you enjoyed the exhibition
Often the simplest subjects make a good painting....probably one for the NEAC exhibition.
Thank you very much Mark - maybe NEAC next year for this one
you have inspired me, have an old water pump in my garden. thanks.
That’s fantastic 😃
That painting turned out absolutely lovely!
Thank you very much
Обожаю вас❤❤❤
Wow - thank you 🤩
Love this! All your work actually. I watch a video (or 5) every morning, then get into my studio. Thank you for your posts! Amazing!
You are so welcome - thank you so much for your support, I really do appreciate everyone who takes the time to comment
love it Simple and delicate and lovely to watch
Thank you so much Suzanne
Bird to Basil: "'Ere dog, what's he up to now?" Basil to bird: "Painting a tap." Bird to Basil: "A tap? Is he a bit, um ....?" Basil to bird: "As a box of frogs, yeah. Tee hee." Bird to Basil: "Tee hee!"
Me to Andrew: Well done, I'd never have thought of doing that; AND - I'm not thinking of doing it now, either, but that'll be my lack of imagination.
PS - We have a well in the garden - I hadn't thought of painting that before, but now..... I've never got the right size of board when I need one, but I'll find something: thanks for the inspiration: the idea of a series of small paintings is an appealing one and would suit my declinging physical abilities rather well - frustrating, having to wait to buy or make an appropriate set of boards, but I feel the old oomph coming back and - t'is all your doing.
Hi Robert
thank you again for your supportive comments. If you email me your address I will send you a few small panels to get you going (free of charge - courtesy of Basil)
Nice painting. I think garden drawings and paintings are a good idea. Gardens need to be enjoyed and celebrated.
Absolutely - right on our doorstep
Lovely and sweet paint, greetings from Mexico
Thank you so much ☺️
Interesting new subject. Altough there's no Landscape in it nonetheless it got a sense of Spring from the sunlit Wall and the limegreen foliage. Wouldn't you like to paint that beautiful Rose? Is it an Austin Rose? Basil was really enyoing his sunbath🙂
Hi Mike
I love the yellow roses but I tried once before and it wasn't a good result! (they may be Austin and have a beautiful scent)
I really love this Andrew! ‚Simple‘ (…or not) but very effective ❤
Glad you like it - thank you
thankyou for this delightful little picture ,the birds, the dog and the pink flowers and the tap. somehow if I use my brush as you do i get a horrible mess so I will keep watching.
You’re very welcome 😊 - glad you enjoyed it
love all your work thank you .
Thank you so much 😃
Aquilegia, if you collect the seeds and spread them about. Thank you for inspiring me to get out and paint,
You are most welcome - happy painting

Just a perfect sketch 😊
Thank you 🙏🏻
Lovely 🌸
Merci beaucoup
Wonderful subject and wonderful painting. What kind of painting medium do you use? Turpentine...?
Thank you. I use turpentine and stand oil
Love your video as usual Andrew .Thank you.
Andrew ,may I ask you two questions please.
1/ Do you use Artists oil paints ,because I was told there is more colour pigment in them.
2/ I notice that when my oil colours dry they become quite dull and I remember an artist on youtube one time applying some sort of medium over the oil paint to bring up the colours again but without the shine
Would you happen to know the name of this medium.
Thank you..☘️
Thank you Rosemary
I do use Artists quality oil paints mainly but have some cheaper student ones for plein air work such as Naples Yellow, Lemon Yellow (the bright one) and violet. The Artists paints are loaded with more pigment which actually means you use less paint!
You can go over the finished painting with a matt varnish which will help unify the surface finish
All the best
Andrew
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Thank you very much for that information Andrew. I think I will purchase the Artist oil paints.
All the very best to you.
Why aren't you painting that beautiful dog??? :)
I must do a painting of him
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt I insist :) He is just glorious!
