What a lovely pile of sketchbooks, Andrew! Thanks for sharing your amazing work recording so many outdoor experiences. I love the different mediums, your confident playfulness, persistence and dedication. Fantastic records of days, places, weather, and life conditions!!! Also, I love how you make good use of a range of papers and how you cut that one book in half!! Bravo!!
A funny thing about being an artist is that people's opinion on what is good or nice is going to inevitably disagree with what the artist thinks is good. Always something to contend with.
Thank you for the video. It’s very pleasing to experiment with lots of different media. Some failures can be turned around by reinvention and experimenting.
Thank you for a quick glimpse into your sketch books, that would make a wonderful afternoon browsing through your studies. 😮 you use so many mediums, inspiring x
Really nice work. Thanks for going through them with us, and also for telling us all the sizes and paper weights, materials etc. Very informative as well as entertaining.
Another very useful guide to any one who is starting to paint or draw and even better for those of us who have been at it for years and missed a trick or two! Given the range of products available it is sometimes hard to know where to start and you have given us a Thomas Cook's Tour with 30 years of experience! i will pass on the link to others. I find the A5 Seawhite HB or ring books very useful for a poacher's pocket in my ancient Barbour. I am pleased i am not the only one to use a panoramic format - both for books and canvas/panels. Lowland landscapes have a horizontal orientation and be it a beach scene in Cornwall or looking along a river valley a double square format is ideal. It saves a lot of paper which tends to betaken up by skies where little may be happening. It would be interesting to hear you speak about the qualities of the different media as you have done with papers. You open eyes to liquid charcoal, oil sticks, and more unusual things like casein paints and ArtGraf 'shapes'. I have used casein paints before on an icon course where one needed to paint over gold leaf - I think it is milk based. I see you have tubes of it, and it is much easier when painting int eh open air than oil and I assume quick drying.
Thank you so much for your awesome reply to my video. I really appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts. I love the idea of doing some in depth videos about specific sketching materials and techniques. Best wishes Andrew
What an interesting video. Fascinating to see how your style has developed. I like all your work; it's really earthy and in touch with the elements. I wish I had the freedom of your approach. Keep them coming. Cheers.
Thank you for sharing your sketchbooks in various media, most enjoyable to watch and really interesting too see the lovely landscapes. Looking forward to seeing more of your outdoor adventures.
Thanks Andrew. Lovely to see this video. Great sketchwork all these years. Yes, wonderfull memories, also when look in to my sketchbooks. Thanks again for sharing!
This was wonderful ❤ I love your use of different materials as I never know what you will use next. It was great to see both sketches I’ve seen you create and your older work too. Very enjoyable ❤
Focussing on the technical (paper and medium) is really useful. Thanks. Your approach (mixed media plein air on landscape sketch books) has influenced me a lot (like your sketching club). I get out there with my sketch book whenever. Most portable medium is waterproof o.5mm pen, water soluble pencil and water pen.
thank you. a good selection of what is available in the uk and what it can be used for. i think my skill level now maybe merits something more than crawford and black (although i have used just about everything in them) or things out of the middle aisle in aldi. i have been wondering what to progress to! 😊
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt certainly - but i have got to the point where i just might produce something worth displaying so i need to consider fade resistance and acid free.
I could look at these sketchbooks all day long , such fabulous variety! Thank you so much for sharing.
You are so welcome Frankie

Nothing wrong with Aldi materials for sketching. I often use a muddy puddle when I forget my water

Many thanks Tony. Most are just great memories of a time and place. Occasionally I will use 1 for a painting.
