The Krate series was offered from 1968 to 1973, the first three models had names inspired by fruits, The Orange Krate, Apple Krate and Lemon Peeler. All those models had a color that matched the fruit they were named after. In 1969 they introduced the Pea Picker in Green and in 1970 they introduced the white Cotton Picker, that color was offered for 2 years. Then in 1971 the introduced the Grey Ghost moving away from the fruit and vegetable themes. The Grey Ghost is the most sought after color based on production numbers, it was a Silver that was originally the base coat for other Schwinn colors.

Nice find, the serial number can identify the exact year, these old Schwinn bikes clean up well, the inner cables probably just need to be replaced to get the cables moving through the housing outer cables, You can also drip a little chain oil to lubricate them as is, replacing them would be ideal for like new performance. Taking out a few spokes would be a good way, just make sure you put them back were they came from🤔 You will probably need to true the wheel after removing spokes. Or get a kid with small hands to polish it for you for $20 🤣🤣🤦‍♂🙋‍♂

I remember when I was a kid.Irvine park rented row boats and Schwinn stingray’s and I was costing down a dirt path I couldn’t stop in time and I hit two older ladies on a dubble seater bicycle and hit the back tire and thay both fell into a ditch and one of them said I just got surgery on her nose I was scared and took off with the bike loaded up in our van 😬

Very cool story! I remember the same thing in my childhood, my neighbor had the only Schwinn Krate Lemon Peeler I had ever seen whaile the rest of us kids had the Huffy and Sears bikes. I wanted a Schwinn so bad and never got one😪🏡🏡, Funny his older brother had a really nic Sky Blur Varsity that looked so grown up and too tall for an 11 year-old 👦Thanks for sharing🙋‍♂👍👍

@@that70sschwinn He's a little more to the story. My dad restored the Stain-Ray in the basement as a Christmas present. Us kids weren't supposed to go in his basement shop but I went in and saw the bike in pieces. I still believed in Santa Claus and went up to ask why there was a bike in the basement. My dad told me it was my Christmas present and that there really wasn't a Santa Claus. I was crushed. I think I still repress that whole situation but I liked the bike knowing my dad had rebuilt it for me. After I moved out and had my own house, I asked my parents where my Sting Ray was. They told me they sold it at a yard sale a few years back, my Varsity was sold too. I do still have my Hutch mountain bike and my Peugeot 12 speed that I bought myself in 1980.

I’m sure it was a bit awkward for both sides, but at some point, we all discover the truth about Santa🎅 You can bet that those bikes are still out there somewhere being enjoyed by a new generation 👍

@@that70sschwinn My dad didn't have to tell me Santa wasn't real, he savored every opportunity to torture and play mind games on us kids. Torturing your own kids was either normal in the 70's, or my dad was really screwed up. Still liked the bike though.

I'm familiar with that challenge, if you can remove a couple of spokes that should give you some room to polish, I like using Simichrome paste polish, use a shop rag and wrap it around the hub axel and slide back and forth like a shoe polish trick. it get all the way around and looks pretty sweet.
