    My Cotton Picker was awesome! I hounded my father until he finally relented. Then, a week later my parents divorced a 10 year old kid. They lost everything! Our house, business, car etc. During the move, all of my toys ( bike) where scattered to any relatives who had room to store. When I turned 18 I asked my mom about all my toys. She hesitated and said, “we sold a large majority of my stuff”. Needless to say, I was devastated. My parents have passed, and they never bought it up while they were alive.

    You've got an amazing collection, well done! All I have is a reproduction Coal Krate that I converted to a 6 speed. I'd love to have an original, but nowadays it's like $2,500+ for a nice example. I suppose I could buy a fixer upper, but where am I going to find parts like a Campagnola rear deraileur, chain guard with the original script, and the iconic Stik Shift without spending a small fortune?

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn 2 роки тому +1

      Nice! I have seen those Coal Krates, they look very nice and appear to have all the Schwinn components seen on the 70-73 Krates.

    I have an Orange Krate which I bought as a kid, where can I get it restored?

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn 3 роки тому

      Nice! these bikes can be more desirable to collectors in original condition and unrestored, if your bike is in decent shape, all you got to do is clean it up, polish the chrome and get it mechanically sound. Your local bike shop can do the bearing overhaul and inner cable replacement if needed. The parts for these bikes go for quite a bit now days, it could be expensive to restore if some of the key parts need to be replaced. What year is your Orange Krate? take a look at my 1970 Cotton Picker part II video, it may be helpful to get an idea

      They are out there... I've seen a few examples on eBay over the years so finding the right one is a matter of timing. In my case, I had all the other years in 4 of the colors so finding the Apple Krate and lemon Peeler in those years was a challenge.

      The Grey Ghost and Cotton Picker were purchased restored, they both included some reproduction parts as well as rechromed original parts and new paint. The Orange Krate and Pea Picker are all original as well as the 2 in boxes, 1969 Lemon Peeler and 1968 Apple Krate. I will be getting to those sometime this year. Thanks for watching👍🔧

      Yes, once Ralph Nader with the Safety Commission banned the stick shift, the Krates were done and the Fastbacks stayed through 1976 with the thumb handlebar shifter but lost that cool feature kids loved😪🤦‍♂
