    Revisiting one of my early restorations, it had been hanging on the wall for over 3 years and it was time to give it some TLC and take her out for a spin
    Send me pictures of your Vintage bike and I will post it on my channel Community Page, send pics to that70sschwinn@gmail.com

    Had a used brown varsity. Then my buddy rolled up on a Connie. Damn, it was nice. Sure would have loved to roll up on a Sports Tourer back then...

      Back then Schwinn did not highlight how much better these chromoly hand frames were than their bread and butter EF models, most went with what they recognized like Varsity, Continental, Suburban, they were simply know as my ten speed

      @@brianchisnell1548 I remembered the Varsity cause my brother had one, so when I went to find a bike I looked for a Varsity and got it, not realizing that 5 years later I would have close to 50 bikes and just about every lightweight in the category🙄🤦‍♀🏡🏡

    I never noticed this has the stem shifters(fat paddle) that '74s and later had.
    A nice early resto, Oscar. I'm sure you see a few things you do differently now or have polished your skills since. Keep 'em coming!

      Yes, I noticed the same thing, all my 1970, 71 and 72's have the more rounded compact "S" stick shift end, the flatter elongated "S" tips were seen on the 1973 models, as well as the 74-76 models I own. This was my 3rd project attempt, I had a new tool set set and a bike Stand, I had done 2 other bikes, including my 1974 Opaque Blue Varsity and 1974 Kool Lemon Continental, this project had more damage than I had bargained for, I wanted to save the bottom bracket from rusting further. I wish I knew about Koolest Kolors factory matching colors then, I'm sure I would have done a repaint and new decals as I did with my WV.
      This is one of my earliest videos when I first finished the bike.

    I damaged the threaded bolt on the rear wheel that holds the cassette onto the wheel. I wonder if they sell cassettes for these wheels

    Hi Oscar- maybe a small garage dehumidifier might reduce some of the recurring rust issues on your restored beauties hanging out there? Just a thought---love your work and love your channel!!

    Oscar, What is the best way to determine what size frame a Schwinn 10 speed is. I am also looking for a Continental or higher model in Burgundy Red. Thank you, Jay

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  3 роки тому

      Hi Jay! you can measure form the top of seat tube to the center of the crank, about where the crank arm bends into the bottom bracket on the non-drive side. I can usually guess, if it's a Schwinn, based on how long the head tube looks. For example Your Continental appears to be a 24" frame. The sizes offered on the 1974 Continental are listed below. I will keep an eye out for a Burgundy Lightweight, The Continental, Super Sport and Sport Tourer were available in the very cool color... Now you got me wanting one 🙄🚲🏠
      20" frame Continental.
      22" frame Continental.
      24" frame Continental.
      26" frame Continental.

    I really appreciate your videos and collection! Working on my first ladies 75 Schwinn Varsity Do you use a new chain in your restoration or do you clean up the original for use?

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Glad you enjoy the content... I usually clean the chain if the bike appears to have normal wear and tear, in the 70's these bikes were either ridden as commuters or as casual weekend riders. Women's bikes are usually in great shape based on how they take care of stuff. I remove the grease in paint thinner and use a soft metal brush thoroughly, then I dip in Evaporust overnight to remove any rust, once rust free and clean, I put chain oil on it and store in a plastic baggie until I'm ready to install. You can also buy new ones for under $20 bucks or less...Thanks for watching👍

    I'm always surprised when I see how often Schwinn used forged steel cranks, and steel wheels. The better European and Japanese bikes of the day were using at least cottered cranks. We're you able to use standard spokes and nipples? Iirc, Schwinn always had specialty parts.

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  4 роки тому +3

      Yes, the one piece crank was used on the bikes we see most, Varsity, Continental, Suburban and several other mass produced flash weld steel frames, however on the higher end bikes, they used the 3 piece cranks and alloy wheels.
      Schwinn was actually using three types of frame tubing and construction, which meant that there were three classes of Schwinn ten-speed bicycles :
      The top-line Paramount series , with frame ets built of silver-soldered Reynolds 531double-butted tubing and Nervex lugs.
      The Superior, Sports Tourer, and Super Sport , whose frames were
      brass fillet-brazed of SAE 4130 chrome molybdenum straight-gauge seamless tubing.
      The remaining models from the "Continental" on down, made of
      flash-welded ("electro-forged") 15-16 gauge longitudinally-welded steel tubing produced in Schwinn's own tube mill.
