    The 1970 Cotton Picker Rides again...From Show Bike to Go Bike 👦👍🚲
    Bikes all over the world today can point to the Schwinn influence. Schwinn has pioneered for the entire industry with many "firsts" including balloon tire bicycles, electro-forged frames, expander hand brakes, shock absorbing forks, American-made lightweights, and the most popular of styling innovations on hi-rise models, the Schwinn Sting-Ray bikes.

    I spent a bunch of time staring at and dreaming about this bike in the window of Repp's Hardware store. No way we could afford it. One day I went to stare at it and it was gone. I rode by that window for weeks hoping to see it again. Thanks for posting the video.

      Great childhood memory! very similar to mine, I grew up in KC, we had a Schwinn dealer I use to ride my bike to with my buddies, Turner's Schwinn was the place to be, I remember seeing all the 10 speeds and all the 20" bikes, then the Krates came out and I wanted one so bad. I mentioned in this video that my neighbor got a Lemon Peeler and I could not believe his parents got it for him. At the time we did not know these would become valuable collector items. I was glad to finally get mine 50 years later🤔 Thanks for watching👍👍

    I was borne in 1968 and I remember in the 70’s I guess I was 9 or 10 years old and just a few kids in my poor neighborhood had one of those bikes .I never had a shot at one mom and dad couldn’t afford it so I settled for a 15$ flea market bike that was a 1960’s off brand model it had tires like a motorcycle and in 1976Ish i got made fun of for that bike. lol. I think that’s when I found my sense of humor . I remember my chain guard always falling off and us boys stopping to fix it. I remember someone giving it the nickname, ( 1955 get out in push) We were like the sand lot kids in that movie lol. Thanks for bringing back some great memories! You’ve got me looking for one of those sting rays now. And yes, we were always making homemade ramps to jump or doing something crazy thanks to evel knievel lol.

      Yes, only a few lucky kids had these, the bike you described sounds like one of many that were inspired by the Krates and most of them are collectors items including the Sears Screamer which is valued in the same price range as the Krates.
      I'm glad you are taking the time to see several of my favorite bikes I certainly appreciate your interest! Thanks 👍👍

    I had a 1968 orange krate that had a clip mounted on the fork that the front cable rested in and the pogo seat post...it was a really cool bike back then and still is

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  3 роки тому

      Sweet! Yes, the 1968 Orange Krate, first year, no front fender Q-Ball 5 speed shifter knob white Saddle with matching stripe and the one year Pogo Seat post, those seat post are very collectible and sell for quite a bit. I got lucky and found a 1968 Apple Krate with the pogo seat post. Those got damaged from kids being rough with them, so many got replaced with the standard post. It may have been the reason they only offered it for one year, too many coming back to the dealers for repair or replacement. Very cool first year 👍

      @@that70sschwinn thanks for the link. but nah, it's EXACTLY like the Krates, except, the 3 top rails, are reversed POSSIBLY (IF, my memory is correct) and the 'pair' come to a point, beyond the neck tube, capped by chrome tips.. like an old 50's era grilles... just past the BADGE area. Imagine a Krate, with 2 chrome tips, coming up to THAT AREA.. either side of the fork neck tube and THAT'S what I recall from my 'stolen' bike.

These will probably be purchased by some to keep in box and hope they become collectors's items. The 2007 Black Friday Sting Ray was $85 and now sell for $300 and up so these may sell for $650 and up once they are no longer available on Amazon. Thanks again and stay safe 👍🔧🚲

    Nice Cotton Picker. Good video and discussion. Not sure if you still have this Cotton Picker being I know this was 2 years ago. There is an eBay seller that has NOS truss rods that would look more nicer than the aftermarket truss rods you have on. One can tell easy in OG forks is the "finger nail" indention of the top and bottom of the legs and truss rods.

    NICE!!! I appreciate your craftsmanship and attention to detail. I thought I was the only person that would stop to mop the floor before putting it on the ground . I just rolled mine out of the closet just to make sure ; Yes on the Superior tire, yes on the Q bolts , yes on the gold dot levers The pedals have never been on and are still in the plastic. It has a cover but it has been awhile and has a layer of dust on it so its due for a detailing. I put a silver sparkle aftermarket seat on it back when I changed the tubes. Ill put the original correct one back on with all the accessories .When I finish (a week or so) Ill give you a shout here and you can tell me where to send pictures. I see that the baseball bat holder is dated 1970 also on the box from Androck Co. Till then Good Bye from Terry in Ca. serial # DG056464

    Where the seat post connects to the seat don't over tighten that bolt because it wants to pivot when the seat shocks compresses as you ride over bumps, if you don't allow it to pivot it damages the seat at the post connection.

    Sweet bike! I bought a coal krate last year, reproduction but I still love it, would love to convert it to a 5 speed though, do you think I can be done?

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  3 роки тому

      Very cool! It may be able to be done, I have a 2007 Black Friday Sting-Ray and I noticed the frame was smaller than the Krate frame. It will depend on the size of your Koal Krate frame seat stay and chain stay and whether it can hold the 5 speed rear hub width, you can cold set the frame to fit the wider size. It would certainly be supper cool but it will be an expensive modification if you plan to use the Schwinn rear rim with slick , and the vintage 5 speed stick shift. You can find both on eBay here's is an example of the S-2 rear rim with 5 speed sprocket
      www.ebay.com/itm/SCHWINN-STINGRAY-KRATE-PEA-APPLE-ETC-5-SPEED-CHROME-REAR-RIM-STAMPED-S-2-L-K/324573904977?hash=item4b921cc051:g:RK4AAOSwkBVgeMdS
      Here is the stick shift This is a 1969 triple bend shifter, I saw a 1968 Q-Ball too
      the 1970-1973 are usually easier to find based on more production years.

      @@hershponII I just measured my Krate rear dropouts, they measure about 5.5" or 140mm, if you measured from dropout to dropout at 4.5" or 115 mm that would require quite an adjustment. My 2007 Black Friday Sting-Ray has a single speed coaster brake hub and measures about 4.5" Not sure if the frame should be adjusted that much.
